Samyang Set to Announce EF Mount 14mm f/2.8 With Autofocus

HTML:
It looks like Samyang will soon announce an AF 14mm f/2.8 for EF mount. To the best of our knowledge this is the first autofocus lens by Samyang for Canon’s EF mount.</p>
<p>An announcement is unknown at the time of writing this, but it’s probably safe to assume it’ll be here soon.</p>

New Cinema EOS Camera Coming to NAB 2018 (CR3]

HTML:
We’ve confirmed that at least one Cinema EOS camera will be announced ahead of NAB 2018 in April in Las Vegas. <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/is-a-6k-canon-cinema-eos-c900-coming-in-2018-cr2/">We previously reported that a 6K camera was coming in 2018</a>, and wondered if it would be called the C900.</p>

<p>We can confirm that it will not be called the C900 and will be an update to a current camera. If we had to guess, we’re probably going to finally see the Cinema EOS C500 Mark II. We can’t imagine the C700 getting a new version this soon after launch, and we know that the C300 Mark II will remain current through 2018.</p>
<p>We have no update on a new C100 at this time.</p>
<p>Once we confirm the name of the camera and some specifications, we’ll let you know.</p>

Tripod help

I am in the market for a new tripod. I have an for like 5 year Dolica 65" and it has plenty of love. So I just got a new hiking partner my 2 month daughter about 65% of my hikes will be just the two of us. The rest of the time my wife will be there. I am looking for a lighter tripod, so I am looking at carbon fiber. I am happy with the height of my tripod with is about 55" b/c I don't use the center column. But is wouldn't mind going a bit taller b/c I am 6'2". I am willing to spend about $500 on a tripod and I don't care it it is new or used.

So I can't decide if I want to get a used gitzo tripod off ebay. Or a new tripod from a brand like induro or Feisol ect. I know the gitzo will be a solid tripod but older tech and I worry I am paying a premium for the name. I am temped but the Induro and Feisol but I am reading a lot of good things about them and they are cheaper and it will be new.

I know I should buy once and buy right. But I can't decide what that is.

Crop vs FF for lots of mm's

Hi to you all,

Been using a crop 1D4 for a while in combi with 400 L IS 2.8 for aviation photography, but now I'm thinking about switching to a 1DX FF.. However, I just love cropping pics afterwards to make detailed compositions, and I wonder when reading all kinds of analysis and reviews, if a FF will satisfy me when it comes to this particular part (cropping - details with more sharpness).
Besides losing a bit of mm's, I don't want to have less sharpness when cropping, on the contrary.

What is your experience, advice and what would you recommend?

Thx

Canon EOS 7D Mark III to Have Slight Crop in 4K [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that the Canon EOS 7D Mark III, which will be Canon’s first APS-C 4K camera, will have a slight crop when shooting in 4K.</p>
<p>As for frame rates, do not expect anything more than 30fps in 4K, and 60fps in 1080P.</p>

<p>There has been no mention of whether or not this camera will get a CFast slot. The EOS-1D X Mark II does, while the EOS 5D Mark IV does not. We’d like to see the EOS 7D Mark III get a CFast slot along with an SD slot.</p>
<p>We don’t yet have a solid announcement timeframe for the 7D Mark III, we hope to solve that riddle soon.</p>

85 f1.4 L IS alternative lens hoods?

Hi guys, a happy new year to you all!

Over Christmas I’ve been using my 85 IS a lot and it still bothers me a lot how difficult, compared to other lenses, it is to keep the front free from rain drops. So here’s the question;

Can any of you that owns this lens and other lenses that may have a lens hood that fits and see if there is another Canon lens hood that’s deeper that can work without causing vignetting. I only own the 85 and 35 so difficult to try anything else.

Thanks!

New 4K ILC Coming From Canon in 2018, Not Cinema EOS [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that a new line of EF ILC video oriented camera capable of 4K is coming from Canon in 2018. We’re told that it won’t fall under the Cinema EOS banner.</p>
<p>We’ve<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-xc15-style-camera-coming-with-ef-mount-cr2/"> seen patents related to such a camera in the recent past</a>, but this is the first time a known source has mentioned the camera.</p>

<p>This camera could appear ahead of NAB in April. The next Cinema EOS camera is scheduled to be announced after the NAB show, which isn’t an unusual thing for Canon to do.</p>
<p>The source was confident it would be a new series of camera, and if it goes well, there’s a possibility of a whole series of cameras under the new umbrella.</p>

Canon Continues To Research Putting IS into Tilt-Shift Lenses

HTML:
It appears that Canon continues to research image stabilization in tilt-shift lenses. Are we possibly going to see more tilt-shift lenses in the future with IS? Or are we a ways away and likely won’t see such a thing until the next updates in a decade or so.</p>
<p>From <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/will-the-next-series-of-ts-es-include-is">Canon News</a>:</p>

<blockquote><p>Japan Patent Application 2017-227697 deals with the wiring of the IS elements that tilt and move with the corresponding tilt of the lens. Specifically how to optimize that because to provide the flexible interconnects necessary for the IS unit would increase complexity.</p></blockquote>
<p>We haven’t anything about more tilt-shift lenses, I think it’s safe to say that the latest 3 will be it for a while.</p>

Sigma 135 f/1.8 art - AF consistency

First of all: Happy new year to everyone!

I have the Zeiss 135 f/2 classic and recently sold my Canon 135 f/2 because the sharpness is so disappointing compared to my Zeiss lens. However, a 135 with AF next to my Zeiss is welcome so I'm looking into the 135 art from Sigma.

Some years ago, I sold my 35 art and got the Canon 35 1.4 II because AF was disappointing. I am watching some reviews on youtube and people say that the 135 also has quite some missed shots due to AF performance.

What are your experiences? How does it (AF-wise) compare to the other Sigma art lenses (for example 35 and 50 which I had and still have)? I think the AF-consistency of the 50 art is acceptable, but not great.

I have also (for a moment) considered the 85 1.4 art, but I already have both the 1.2 II from Canon and the 85 1.8 VC from Tamron and I like the relatively compact design and stabilisation of the Tamron. The size and weight of the 85 1.4 art is holding me back from it (and also lack of IS). In addition: from reviews I get the feeling that the 135 art has more resolution than the 85 art. What do you think?

6D/5D and m42 screw mount lenses / focusing screens

I've got got the itch for old m42 screw mount lenses that manual focus. I thought I read the 5D Mark II can have the focusing screen replaced to help with manual focus. Does anyone have experience with these screens and have a particular style to recommend?

I'll be on the lookout for a camera on Craig's list or eBay. Right now I only have Russian lenses, but wondering how the old Pentax Super-Takumar lenses are? Love the rendering of my Helios lenses, but being able to swap out the focus screen would be a huge help to these old eyes. Don't think I can have that done to my Mark III and would just like a dedicated camera for this purpose.

Patent: Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

HTML:
There has been a lot of patents post lately as the rumor mill has become quiet likely due to the time of year. As most of you know, there is a new patent translating expert on the scene, which is much appreciated. I am personally the worst at reading engineering & legal speak and I welcome having a replacement to the long gone egami blog. Oddly enough, the latest flurry of patents has lead to some sites claiming they post better patents than other sites. Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up. We generally post the optical formula patents, as I cannot answer questions about sensor and processing technology other than to defer you to <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/">Canon News</a> and <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/rumours-page/">Northlight Images</a>.</p>
<p>The new year kicks off with CES in January, a show Canon generally only announces some PowerShot cameras and maybe some VIXIA camcorders. We’ve also seen some random accessories and printers announced for the show too. The next major show for Canon is CP+ in February held in Yokohama, Japan. Canon usually announces at least one DSLR for that show.</p>

<p>The rumor mill should start picking back up in the coming weeks, as we expect a lot of DSLRs from Canon in 2018.</p>
<p>This latest optical formula patent comes as an EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, a follow-up to what is probably my least favourite lens in the Canon lineup.</p>
<p><strong>Japan Patent Application 2017-219655:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Focal distance: </strong>18.60 49.08 193.00</li>
<li><strong>F number: </strong>3.59 4.89 5.88</li>
<li><strong>Field angle: </strong>36.29 15.55 4.05</li>
<li><strong>Image height: </strong>13.66 13.66 13.66</li>
<li><strong>Length of the lens:</strong> 145.04 172.07 200.21</li>
<li><strong>BF</strong>: 38.23 59.69 74.12</li>
</ul>
<p>Canon would be well served to get this lens to market and fix the ailments that have driven me bonkers with it. Most notably the lens creep, dust accumulation and average optical performance.</p>

5DsR cracked rear screen

I took my 5DsR hiking over the Christmas break. Most of the time it lived on by 24-105 in my Crumpler "4 million dollar home" over my shoulder and clipped to by backpack. Once I scrambled up a slope with my camera on the strap over my neck and it hit a rock and cracked the cover over the rear LCD screen (see photo). I doubt if an aftermarket screen protector would have prevented the damage, especially as it looks like the impact was from the side.

The display functions perfectly (and now that I am used to the crack, it doesn't bother me), but I have two questions:

- Is the protective cover user replaceable?
That for the 5D2 was replaceable as there was an air gap between the cover and the LCD screen. I think that changed in the 5D3. I understand that the 5DsR has the same rear screen as the 5D3 (please correct me if I'm wrong).

- Will the crack be more vulnerable to water ingress?
I guess that if the cover is bonded to the actual screen and if the bonding material is not cracked (I presume it is more flexible), there should not be a problem.
I could apply an aftermarket screen protector, but I dislike them as they reduce clarity and contrast of the screen.

Thanks

Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS Review and Comparisons | Dustin

Hi everyone,

I’ve wrapped up my coverage of the new Canon 85mm f/1.4L IS. It’s a solid lens from Canon, but faces some stiff competition. I’ve done a lot of comparisons to other lenses as a part of this series, and I feel confident in my conclusions after all of that.

Written Review: http://bit.ly/85LIStwi
Video Playlist: http://bit.ly/85LISpl
Final Video Review: http://bit.ly/85LISda

Canon Developers Discuss Designing the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM

HTML:
Canon Asia has posted an interview article with the developers of the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM. The developers initially thought it would be impossible to design such a lens and keep it under 1 kg in weight and have a compact design.</p>

<blockquote><p>When the product planning department requested development of this lens, our development department was initially stumped by the high degree of difficulty in the design. When equipping large aperture lenses with image stabilisation, the arrangement of the focus and image stabilisation groups is an important factor for determining the size and weight of the lens. Lenses with a small f-number (large aperture) characteristically have large diameter glass. The image stabilisation group, which is a part of the optical system, needs to be able to move to compensate for camera shake, which naturally makes the group heavy. An actuating force is also required to drive the group, and this further adds to the lens’ size and weight. Therefore, the development team’s first impression was that it would be almost impossible to develop the reasonably-sized, appealingly-priced 85mm f/1.4 lens with image stabilisation that the product planning department had requested. <a href="https://snapshot.canon-asia.com/article/en/ef85mm-f14l-is-usm-developer-interviews-1">Read the full article</a></p></blockquote>
