Camera to complement your phone

Are you looking to buy a camera to complement your smartphone but dont know what to get? Then read on!

If size & weight are important and you have no plans to buy a 2nd lens then a point & shoot with a large image sensor like those found in a Four Thirds, APS-C, Full frame camera may be of interest to you.

Large image sensor allows for better image quality than any and all smartphones.

Their built-in lens tends to have faster f-number than the kit lens of mirrorless or dSLRs.

They also have WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC to complement and connect to your smartphone.

Listed below are some of these cameras that are smaller & weigh less than their mirrorless counterpart. These are accurate as of the date of this posting.

Full Frame
- Leica Q (Type 116) < looks like a Leica M camera but with auto focus and auto aperture
- Sony RX1R II
- Sony RX1R
- Sony RX1

APS-C
- Fujifilm X100F
- Ricoh GR II
- Canon G1 Mark III
- Fujifilm X70
- Leica X-U (Typ 113)

Four Thirds
- Leica D-LUX (Typ 109)
- Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100

Another option that offers higher utility may be buying a flagship phone like a Google Pixel 2 or iPhone 8.

You may leave your new camera at home but never your phone.

The best camera you can ever own is the one with you always.

A Major New Cinema EOS Product Coming for NAB 2018

HTML:
We’re told that a “major new product” will be coming from ahead of NAB 2018 in April. There were no details given beyond that.</p>
<p>However, we have heard various little bits of information from various people over the previous few months. An anamorphic lens, which has been rumored for quite some time should see the light of day for the show.</p>
<p>There also is also the obvious gap between the C300 Mark II and the C700.</p>

<p>We’ve only heard once that a new Cinema EOS DSLR is coming, but that is something we think is a long shot. There has been no mentions of a 4K mirrorless video focus mirrorless camera, and I think we can all agree that would be out of character for Canon.</p>
<p>I don’t think an <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-developing-8k-cinema-eos-camera-120mp-dslr-8k-display/">8K camera from Canon</a> is coming in 2018.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Irix Presents Its Edge 100 Filter System for Wide Angle Lenses

HTML:
<p>The TH Swiss company would like to announce the expansion of its range of Irix accessories with the Edge 100 series filter system. Among new products, there will be a versatile holder – the IFH-100 – with dedicated adapters and a wide choice of 100x100mm and 100x150mm filters.</p>
<p><strong>The Irix Edge IFH-100 filter holder

</strong>The Irix IFH-100 is a universal filter holder designed for size 100mm filters. Its lightweight compact construction and bayonet adapter are created especially for the Irix 15mm f/2.4 lens, allowing the use of two filters at the same time without any vignetting effect. The construction of the filter holder base on the removable adapters allows for quick and easily attachment to the lens, along with free rotation around the optical axis when using the graduated or polarizing filters.</p>
<p>The ability to use removable adapters with thread diameters from 67mm to 82mm means that the holder can be used with lenses produced by Irix in the future, along with other brands. Each adapter has an additional thread for attaching the cap to the lens.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>The filter holder is made of an aluminium alloy, which guarantees the high strength and stiffness of its structure. This has enabled to get an extremely compact size while keeping wide functionality, along with an aesthetic design together with the whole Irix product line. It is worth mentioning that the IFH-100 is the lightest holder of its class. The front surface of the filter holder is covered with a light-absorbing velvet fabric that blocks access to the side light, what is especially important when using high density optical ND filters.</p>
<p><strong>The Irix Edge 100 filters</strong>

With the introduction of the IFH-100 filter holder, the Edge 100 series filters will also be available in two formats. The first, size 100×150, will contain gradual filters with a soft and hard transition, and also a reversed gradual filter dedicated to taking pictures of sunrises and sunsets. These rectangular filters will be available in ND4, ND8 and ND16 versions. In the square format, Neutral Density filters with densities ND32, ND128, ND1000, ND1000K will be available for the 100x100mm, along with a polarizing filter. There are future plans by the manufacturer to introduce filters which reduce light pollution.</p>
<p>Edge 100 series filters have a thickness of 2mm and are made from high quality optical glass which is also used in the production of the optical elements in lenses. Filters are coated on both sides with an anti-reflective nano-coating to keep high contrast and natural colours in pictures. The additional water and oil repellent coating also ensures easy cleaning of the surface.</p>

<p><strong>The premiere at Photo Plus Expo 2017</strong>

The Edge series will be available at the Irix booth (No.929) during the Photo Plus Expo in New York City on October 26-28, 2017.</p>
<p>The full range of new Irix Edge accessories, along with pricing and availability information, will be published in the near future.</p>

Hoi An, Vietnam

Just back from a short break in Hoi An. There are far too many tourists, but this doesn't distract from the fact that it is a very photogenic little town. If you are planning a trip to anywhere in Southeast Asia I would definitely recommend stopping by Hoi An. There are flights from many airports in Asia and the flight from Bangkok only takes 90 minutes.

I took an M6 body, three small lenses, and one slightly larger lens. I took my EF-M 18-55mm, but didn't use it at all. The lens I used most was the EF-S 10-22mm. Originally I had intended taking the EF-M 11-22mm, which is a great lens, but the EF-S 10-22 is faster and the image quality is slightly better. The EF-S 10-22mm is bigger, but it is still quite portable.

My second most used lens was the EF-M 22mm and I also took a few shots with the EF 40mm f/2.8 pancake. Travelling with my wife and two small kids I didn't get as many opportunities to take photos as I would have liked, but I did manage to get a few snaps.

I'm still having problems with my M6 changing ISO value without me noticing. I thought I had got to the bottom of this, but there is still a problem. It's really annoying to take a series of shots and then to find that they are all ISO 25,600. I have never had this problem with any Canon camera I have previously owned. Apart from this issue, the M6 is a little gem.

LP-E6N Bought in ebay

Hi there!

Yesterday I received a couple of LP-E6N Batteries and noticed something wasn't right. They charged ok, the camera gives battery info and everything seems fine. But externally... I'm leaving a couple of pictures, one of the is the original that came with my camera and the other is one that I received.

What do you think? I'm not telling yet which one is since I don't want to bias the answers in any way.

A new EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM ?

Is a replacement for the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM likely in the near future?
It has not been mentioned in any 'roadmap' or other rumor I could find.

I wanted my first Ultra-Wide Angle (UWA) lens for architecture (buildings) and landscapes for quite some time, so I bought the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM quite shortly after it came out in 2014. I have been using it more and more as I grew familiar with the possibilities and the peculiarities of this particular focus range.

I am not dissatisfied with the images it produces. Especially when the price of the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM is taken into account.

What I miss most when working with the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM UWA lens is the lack of a distance scale.
I often find myself in need to just check the focus when using a (very) wide angle lens as AF is not (and cannot) always be correct in this focal range.
Like any STM lens, the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM has no distance scale. So the method of checking focus with the help of the distance scale does not work here. And the thing is that I (have to) use that quite a lot in comparable situations with my ring-type EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.

The above made me think that a newer version of the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM could be the ideal UWA lens for me.
The present version of this lens was introduced in 2004. This is more than 13 years ago, which means that its technology is around 14 to 15 years old.

I would prefer the 'new one' to have a bit better IQ in terms of edge sharpness, less vignetting and less CA.
These latter wishes will no doubt not be easy to fullfill. For FF bodies an UWA zoom lens with good IQ is complex and expensive. For the APS-C format it could be smaller, less complex and therefore less expensive.

Some additional thoughts:
- IS would be a nice feature, but no real requirement for me.
- I would like a bit more range than I have now, like 10 to 24 mm. But this should definitely NOT come at the expense of IQ.

The EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM shows that fairly good IQ and even a decent IS can be produced at a low price for the APS-C format.
A newly designed UWA zoom lens with a range of 10 to 22 or 24 mm with a ring-type USM and with a bit better IQ than the present version should therefore be possible.
But will it?

Proper way to store lens

Hello... is there a proper o se a best way to store your lenses? Say on a shelf... standing over the capped mount side down? Or standing over the front cap mount side up?

How about when transporting, say in a shoulder bag, which side up?

Or doesn’t matter? Or matters only for certain lenses (heavier ones)?

What’s your take?

Thanks

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS Still in Testing [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that the long rumored IS version of the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L is still in testing but has not yet been given an announcement date. There are apparently still two versions of the lens being developed, with only one coming to market.</p>
<p>Canon’s goal is to make the new IS version of the lens noticeably better optically than the current EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II and just adding IS to the 6 year old optical formula. The second goal of the lens has been weight, adding image stabilization adds weight and bulk to a lens. Nikon’s non-VR and VR versions of their 24-70mm f/2.8 has a weight difference of about 170 grams, which you can feel when shooting all day, the VR version is also noticeably bigger in size.</p>

<p>We were told back in 2012 that Canon had worked on an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS & EF 24-70mm f/4L IS alongside the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II development, and as we know, chose to release the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS a few months after the current f/2.8 lens. Now keep in mind that L zooms take years to develop from start to finish and various prototypes will obviously exist.</p>
<p>Every other lens manufacturer seems to have an IS version of their 24-70mm f/2.8 version and Canon seems to pride itself on being the market leader in lens technology, so I think it’s only a matter of time until we see an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Canon Patent: New Rear Screen Concept for DSLRs

HTML:
A <a href="https://worldwide.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/biblio?CC=JP&NR=2017098728A&KC=A&FT=D&ND=4&date=20170601&DB=EPODOC&locale=en_EP">patent from Canon Japan</a> showing new rear screen designs has appeared, and it looks very interesting. I think a lot of us have always assumed eventually the entire back of a camera would be an LCD/OLED. Beyond just the size of the screen, the patent also covers a new way pivot mecanism for the LCD, you can see the images below.</p>
<p>What’s also interesting is the mode dial appearing from behind the screen when you move it.</p>
<p>A lot of us have called on Canon to put vari-angle LCD’s on professional cameras such as the EOS-1D X series, EOS 5D series and the EOS 7D series, and we’re still waiting. This would definitely be a big leap in a new direction for rear camera screens, but I suspect too big of a leap to see first in a flagship professional camera such as the EOS-1D X Mark III, but it could be introduced in a lower end camera such as the EOS 7D Mark III or a new videoc focused DSLR.</p>

Anyone in the Bay Area, California?

If there are any shooters here in the bay area of California I'm looking to get rid of a bunch of demo and lightly used gear. I get comped a lot of gear I never use. Umbrellas, stands, softboxes... New creative light umbrellas and a few Lastolite Ezybox - Softboxes and Octa's. A couple of Elinchrom Quadras, and two olde Rangers. All working... and in great shape. Older stands by Avenger and Kupo. I have some P. Buff PLM's and gave one to CanonFanBoy here on the site, it was like new.

I just moved to Broncolor so lots of stuff needs to go to clear out the studio... I'm not looking to ship this stuff, but find someone local. If not it's all going on Fleabay...

Canon Lens Milestones in Annual Production Terms

Attached is a graph which permits some comparison with CIPA numbers, though the dates aren't aligned that way. The graph uses Canon's announced EF lens production milestones to estimate lens shipments per year over the intervening time interval, but those are aligned to announcements instead of years. The 130M announcement just came out. The peak at 70M lenses occurred in late 2011.

For comparison, one can roughly align CIPA numbers with the milestones. So Canon produced roughly 8.4M lenses in 2016 give or take a few, and CIPA reports member shipments of 19M, leaving Canon with a 44% market share in lens shipments (among CIPA members).

In 2011, both 60M and 70M production milestones were reported. Using the higher of the two, 15.15M lenses per year, Canon sold approximately 58% of lenses shipped that year of the 26.27M that CIPA reports.

None of this aligns perfectly with profits, of course, since recent shipments by all makers have included large numbers of more expensive lens products with higher profit margins. And Canon's automation of lens manufacturing may also increase their margins.

I note that Nikon reached a Nikkor 60M lens production milestone in the end of March 2011, 70M in June 2012, and so on up to 100M in July 2016. Attached are the lens production estimates for Nikon as well, though again they are not aligned by date.

Using those milestones and the same methodology, I estimate Nikon produced about 7.94M lenses in 2011 for a 30% market share, while shipping about 5.99M lenses in 2016 for a 31.5% market share.

These estimates are unrefined, but do give us data about how the overall lens market is changing. Lenses sold by other manufacturers (probably chiefly Sony/Zeiss and Sigma in the DSLR domain), are taking a larger market share and taking it mostly from Canon. [This is slightly surprising, since it appears that Nikon may have suffered more in camera body sales than Canon over that same period. However, lens manufacturers appear to be targeting Canon since it has the largest share of DSLR camera production.] Some of this may also reflect increasing market diversification into both mirrorless and (more recently) faux medium format offerings by manufacturers.

Canon and Nikon still account for about 75% of all ILC lenses sold according to this data. This is down from 88% in 2011.

Review: Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC G2 by TDP

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their exhaustive review of the brand new Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC G2 lens. A direct competitor to the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS Art lens.</p>
<p><strong>From TDP:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Putting the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC G2 Lens to the test … the wide-open aperture center-of-the-frame results at f/2.8 are very sharp at 24mm and 35mm. By 50mm, a slight degradation is seen and at 70mm, center-of-the-frame results are somewhat soft at f/2.8. In the wider half of the range, stopping down to f/4 makes little difference in center-of-the-frame sharpness and really, none is needed. In the longer half of the range, especially at 70mm, stopping down to f/4 brings a very significant improvement in image sharpness. This lens is very sharp in the center and mid-portions of the image circle at f/4 with little improvement seen at f/5.6 aside from the mid-frame areas showing slight further improvement at 70mm. <a href="https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Tamron-24-70mm-f-2.8-Di-VC-USD-G2-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p>

</blockquote>
<p>We have lots of options at this focal range from Canon, Sigma and Tamron and it may be hard to choose which way to go. One thing is for sure, Sigma and Tamron have proven that the market wants a stabilized 24-70 f/2.8 lens and it might be time Canon answered the call as well.</p>

Zeiss Officially Announces the Milvus 1.4/25

HTML:
<em>With its new wide-angle focal length, the ZEISS Milvus family now boasts eleven lenses for single-lens reflex cameras, including four focal lengths with a maximum aperture of 1.4, which are perfect for videographers too.</em></p>
<p><strong>OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 2017-10-18 </strong>– The ZEISS Milvus 1.4/25 is the latest focal length to be added to ZEISS’s largest range of lenses for full-frame single-lens reflex cameras. The lens, which was developed for the DSLR systems from Canon1 is a trademark or registered trademark of Canon Inc. and/or other members of the Canon Group. and Nikon2 is a registered trademark of Nikon Corporation., is suitable primarily for landscape and architecture photography, and for journalistic shots and videos. “The completely new optical design ensures superior performance across the entire image field,” says Christophe Casenave, Product Manager at ZEISS. “This results in high-contrast photos and a harmonious bokeh.”</p>
<p><strong>High-speed wide-angle lens</strong><b>

</b>Thanks to a maximum aperture of 1.4, this lens can even capture exceptional images in poor light. “Even at full aperture, there are hardly any color fringes,” says Casenave. “The finest details can be reproduced in high definition and contrast all the way into the corners.” The metal housing is what makes the lens robust, and its dirt and dust protection even makes the ZEISS Milvus 1.4/25 ready for action in adverse weather. The large 172-degree focus rotation angle enables precise manual focusing for adding creative touches to photos and videos.</p>

<p><strong>The largest ZEISS lens family yet</strong><b>

</b>Featuring eleven focal lengths ranging from 15 to 135 millimeters, including two macros, the ZEISS Milvus family covers a host of applications, such as portrait, landscape, architecture and street photography. “We can offer every photographer just the right lens,” says Casenave.</p>
<p><strong>Perfect for videographers too</strong><b>

</b>The four ZEISS Milvus focal lengths 25, 35, 50 and 85 millimeters with an aperture of 1.4 are just perfect for filming. Thanks to their high speed, they are suitable primarily for interviews and documentaries where the videographer can utilize natural light. Thanks to the de-click function in the version for the Nikon-Mount the aperture can be adjusted continuously. ZEISS Lens Gears in a range of sizes permit the use of follow-focus systems.</p>
<p><strong>Price and availability</strong><b>

</b>The ZEISS Milvus 1.4/25 retails for 2,399 euros incl. 19 percent sales tax (RRP) or $2,399USD and will be available starting 2 November 2017.</p>

6DMKII mac support

Hi guys,

Just a quick one.

Ive been using the 6DMKII since launch and using bridge/lightroom to sort/edit images.

I do like to use apple photos to archive my images and view them.

Currently there is still no support for the 6DMKII im currently on Sierra on my mac pro because pretty much non of the software I use works on high sierra properly yet the whole CC suite is a mess and is incompatible. (Now 2018 has been released at least it seems to work)

I also like to be able to space bar to view images but currently there is no raw support across the OS.

Apple can only implement when the Canon sends over the code?

Does anyone have any idea why after nearly 3 months there is still no support? Or is the support built into High Sierra? Usually an update comes across to support cameras etc across the most recent OS's.

Just find it particularly annoying and I cant be the only one. Im an early adopter and haven't had this issue so far into the product cycle before. Seems odd to me.

Anyone able to shed some light?
