New DSLR Series Coming in 2018? [CR1]

HTML:
For the second time in the last couple of months, we’re being told that a new DSLR series will be announced some time in 2018. Neither source could name the series, only that it appeared as a “new DSLR series” in a presentation.</p>
<p>If we’re thinking out loud, I think these would be the obvious candidates.</p>

<ul>
<li>EOS Cinema DSLR
<ul>
<li><em>A cinema DSLR camera to replace the discontinued EOS-1D C. This has been talked about numerous times over the years.</em></li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>EOS-1D Xs
<ul>
<li><em>A high megapixel pro series body. Since the amalgamation of the 1D line back in 2009, we’ve always wondered if we’d get a camera like this to truly replace the EOS-1Ds Mark III. </em></li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>EOS APS-C Cinema DSLR
<ul>
<li><em>A cheaper 4K cinema alternative that would “protect” the Cinema EOS lineup of cameras.</em></li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<p>Hopefully this will bring a bit more information to the surface. For the moment, this is a <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/the-canon-rumors-rating-system-explained/">[CR1]</a> rumor, so please treat it as such.</p>

My 6D MkII Photos - Wildlife! [UPDATE: ISO 12800 Songbird BIFs added]

I thought I'd share my first batch of 6D Mark II photos here :)

Most of these wildlife shots are taken with the 6D Mark II and a Canon 100-400L II, handheld. In some cases, there may be an extender, but mostly it's just the bare lens.

I must say, changing primarily from the 80D+Sigma 150-600C to the 6DII+100-400II for my wildlife photography has really changed the hobby aspect of photography for me. On the body side, the 6DII takes beautiful photos, with ISO that cleans up very well. As a result, I'm not afraid to crank that shutter speed and let the ISO creep up.

In addition, my keeper rate has gone way, way up. By keeper, I don't just mean clear, in-focus photos -- I never really had an issue with that before. But now, there are proportionately more interesting photos that are different in some way, capture some emotion, or tell a story. The ratio of boring photos that I sift through is much lower.

Incidentally, I apologize if this comes up as a double post of some sort. I don't think it will, but the site took my first new thread post, but I couldn't for the life of me find it.

First, some bird portraits :) Generally, the high res versions are unreduced; however, some are, because I was initially trying to keep them under 5MB for attachments (this didn't seem to work, but I kept the smaller files).

I managed to capture these two quite close to me, requiring not much crop.

For those who are interested in "pixel level sharpness", here is the head of the above picture, zoomed to about 100% (I had to shrink it very slightly to fit the forum width). You can get the real 100% by clicking the above link. By the way, this photo was taken handheld at 1/400, f/6.3, ISO 100 using Mode 3 IS. The clarity of the eye is something I could never have gotten before as a handheld shot at 400mm.

This photograph was taken on a very cloudy day:

Here are some herons in flight. All were captured handheld, I think at 1/4000. The 6DII has been very kind to me in high ISO cleanup.

But it's not all about heron, right? Here's a lovely juvenile female hawk. It was actually taken through a window!

CANON AND MAGIC LANTERN

If everyone is complaining about Canon not having magic zoom and the million other magical things that ML has, why doesn't canon just incorporate a lot of the features or all if possible , into their next big FF body?

Whats stopping them? Is Magic Lantern and its contents trademarked/copyrighted or something? Canon is getting hammered by sony on the creative innovations front. Canon designers need to just sit down and start from scratch and reinvent the dslr and blow Sony away. Just my 2 cents as a canon user who's understanding why everyone's switching. I'm loyal to canon, but just frustrated by the lack of creativity on canon's part.

Nikon: If we go mirrorless, it must be full-frame

Straight from the horse's mouth:
https://petapixel.com/2017/09/16/nikons-next-mirrorless-camera-will-full-frame/

A few thoughts:

[list type=decimal]
[*]If we go mirrorless? ::)

[*]The notion that they'd only choose FF or APS-C is somewhat laughable. As time marches onward, just about every camera segment will become mirrorless. They 100% will offer APS-C and FF mirrorless systems -- it's just a question of when.

[*]“Nikon customer base is very broad, from novice to enthusiasts to prosumer to professional, that’s Nikon’s advantage,” Goto says. “Olympus, Sony, and Fujifilm can only cover a small part of that. So far there is no professional using their products.” --> I can see the slogan now: Nikon, better than Olympus/Sony/Fuji. :P

Canon's New Mini Projector, The Mini Projector M-i1

HTML:
Canon has a new mini projector that doesn’t require a PC on the way. While it doesn’t look like it’ll have a lot of applications for the photographer, it looks to be a neat little gadget for a niche market.</p>
<p><strong>From Nikkei Technology:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Canon Marketing Japan Inc will release the “Mini Projector M-i1,” which can project video without using a personal computer, Sept 7, 2017.</p>
<p>The company expects that the projector will be used for making a presentation outside, having a conference in open space, projecting images at a construction site, etc.</p>
<p>The projector can project video by reading out data stored in the embedded memory or a USB memory stick by operating the touch pad. With a built-in battery, it can be used for up to two hours, and it can be used as a mobile battery for charging a smartphone, etc. <a href="http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/atclen/news_en/15mk/091201579/">Read the full article</a></p>

Sports shooters: single or expanded AF points?

I've shot sports for years, and always used single point AF, moving the points around the frame as needed, or simple keeping the AF point on the action. Very occasionally I'll use Zone AF.

Just for the hell of it I used expanded AF points with 1DX and 7DII at an athletics track and field meet yesterday. While I've got plenty of material to deliver to the client, I felt my keeper rate was well down on my usual hit-rate.

What are other sports shooters preferences?

My Not Nearly Complete, But Rather Entertaining, Circular Polarizer Filter Article by Roger Cicala

HTML:
Roger over at Lensrentals.com has written a nice piece about circular polarizers.</p>
<p><em>My Not Nearly Complete, But Rather Entertaining, Circular Polarizer Filter Article by Roger Cicala</em></p>
<p>So, a while back I wrote <a href="https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/06/the-comprehensive-ranking-of-the-major-uv-filters-on-the-market/">a not quite complete article on UV filters</a>. To do that, I had to buy new testing equipment and learn to test filters. This was not what I wanted to do when I grew up. But somebody has to do it, and I did get to buy new toys.</p>
<p>More importantly, Tyler (Who handles the purchasing) asked me why, many years ago, I chose the <a href="http://www.pntra.com/t/TUJGRktHSkJGRk5HSklCRkpOSkVN?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lensrentals.com%2Fsearch%3Ffilters%3D%257B%2522checked%2522%253A%257B%2522Item%2BType%2522%253A%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522string_values%2522%252C%2522selected%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522id%2522%253A%2522%2522%252C%2522values%2522%253A%255B%2522Accessory%2522%255D%257D%255D%257D%252C%2522Accessory%2BType%2522%253A%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522string_values%2522%252C%2522selected%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522id%2522%253A%2522%2522%252C%2522values%2522%253A%255B%2522Filter%2522%255D%257D%255D%257D%252C%2522Filter%2BStyle%2522%253A%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522string_values%2522%252C%2522selected%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522id%2522%253A%2522%2522%252C%2522values%2522%253A%255B%2522Circular%2522%255D%257D%255D%257D%252C%2522Filter%2BType%2522%253A%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522string_values%2522%252C%2522selected%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522id%2522%253A%2522%2522%252C%2522values%2522%253A%255B%2522Polarizing%2522%255D%257D%255D%257D%257D%252C%2522range_for_range%2522%253A%257B%257D%252C%2522range_for_value%2522%253A%257B%257D%257D%26reload_filters%3Dtrue%26q%3D%26sort_by%3Dpopularity">Circular Polarizing filters</a> that Lensrentals stocked. A better person than me would have confessed that I’ve never known the first thing about Circular Polarizers; that I just bought the most expensive to be our ‘best’ and the cheapest to be our ‘basic.’ But instead, I just said, “Well, we should do some scientific-type testing and a more thorough evaluation now.”</p>
<p>Like a metaphor for my life, the results ended up being the opposite of what I expected. I thought if we found tons of differences testing simple clear and UV filters, there would be many more differences in more complex polarizing filters. So today, instead of showing you amazing differences between the various brands, I’ll just save you some money on your next CP filter purchase. That should work out for both of us: you save money, I get a shorter blog post.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>I should mention our methodology has improved somewhat since we did our first filter article. I used a red laser to measure transmission then, and several people made the very reasonable suggestion that a green laser might be a better choice, being in the middle of the spectrum and all. Other people said I should get a spectrometer and measure the entire spectrum. So I did both of those things.</p>
<p>This should give you some hints about me as a person. If someone asks me to test a lens at a different aperture, I have a screaming fit about testing taking up a few hours of my time. Someone suggests I spend $15,000 on new equipment, and I’m like, “Yeah, great idea, that would be cool to have.”</p>

<p>Finally, I had no intention of testing every polarizing filter on the market. I did what I usually do; bought the ones B&H Photo had in stock in 77mm size. So we’re going to compare, in no particular order, except alphabetical, with the current price for a 77mm:</p>
<ul>
<li>B&W XS-Pro High-Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano         $102</li>
<li><a href="http://www.pntra.com/t/TUJGRktHSkJGRk5HSklCRkpOSkVN?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lensrentals.com%2Fsearch%3Ffilters%3D%257B%2522checked%2522%253A%257B%2522Brand%2522%253A%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522string_values%2522%252C%2522selected%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522id%2522%253A%2522%2522%252C%2522values%2522%253A%255B%2522Heliopan%2522%255D%257D%255D%257D%252C%2522Item%2BType%2522%253A%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522string_values%2522%252C%2522selected%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522id%2522%253A%2522%2522%252C%2522values%2522%253A%255B%2522Accessory%2522%255D%257D%255D%257D%252C%2522Filter%2BType%2522%253A%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522string_values%2522%252C%2522selected%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522id%2522%253A%2522%2522%252C%2522values%2522%253A%255B%2522Polarizing%2522%255D%257D%255D%257D%257D%252C%2522range_for_range%2522%253A%257B%257D%252C%2522range_for_value%2522%253A%257B%257D%257D%26reload_filters%3Dtrue%26q%3DHeliopan%2BCircular%2BPolarizer%2B%26sort_by%3Dpopularity">Heliopan Circular Polarizer</a>                                                                          $200</li>

</ul>
<p><strong>So, About the Polarizing Part</strong></p>
<p>If you’re thinking about buying a circular polarizing filter, you probably want to know which ones polarize the best and which ones the worst, right? I know I did. Now we could have just gone outside and taken pictures in the bright sun and said this one’s good and that one’s bad. But we never do anything simple when we can complicate the crap out of it.</p>
<p>So what we did was take our laser transmission set up and modified it a bit. Primarily, this shines a laser into a power meter and gets a reading. Then we can stick mostly transparent stuff in the beam and see how much it reduces the power reaching the meter. Excellent lasers are almost entirely polarized, but I have a budget, and that budget didn’t include (much to my sorrow) $10,000 for the lab-grade, steel-melting laser I wanted. I got a little 5-<em>m</em>watt green (530 nm) diode laser.</p>

Canon's unsuccessful sensor cleaning on a 5D Mark IV

Hello, Everyone.

I received my 5D Mark IV today from a Canon factory service repair center (New Jersey).

I sent it in to have the sensor cleaned.

Attached is an image of how things turned out.

Mightly disappointed, I must say.

Canon is taking it back to give things another go. I'm going to print an image of the photo and include it in the box. Maybe it will help the Canon person know what to do differently.

Anyone have this sort of thing happen?

Newsletter Exclusive: New 50mm Coming in 2018 [CR2]
We're told by a very good source that Canon will finally address the 50mm focal length in 2018. There are apparently two prototypes currently being tested by select photographers.
We're told one of the lenses is an EF 50mm f/1.4 IS USM, which was likely developed alongside the brand new EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM. We were not told what the other 50mm prototype lens was.
The announcement is slated for some time in the first half of 2018. As always though, lenses come where they're done and ready for production, not when the marketing people want them to be announced. Therefore, delays are always possible.
To be perfectly honest, we don't like reporting about 50mm lenses, as we've been burned a few times in the past.
The same source did mention that a previous design for a fast 50mm lens was scrapped due to do some new technologies in manufacturing that Canon utilizes and that the new deisgn is going to be an improvement.

Canon: We'll make any nutty lens you want -- unless its a 50 prime [CR9]

Tokyo [AP] -- Touting company plans to offer new diffractive optics lenses, Canon imaging exec Richard Trickle continues to put his money down on offering new glass.

"Lenses continue to drive business, and we'll design as many as can to help the photography community thrive, unless it's in a staple focal length prime lens like a 50mm f/1.4" he said in an interview Wednesday.

Trickle, continuing with excitement: "We'll refresh anything the field wants. Other than an exceptionally handy, small and fast prime lens in high demand like a new EF 50mm f/1.4 USM, of course."

"There really is no end to what we'll do to satisfy our customers. Illuminated crop macro lenses to shoot your restaurant order from short distances for Instagram? Done. Tilt-shift 1:2 macro lenses? You're welcome. Compact DO superteles? You betcha. Resurrect nutty old nonsense? I don't want to spoil anything, but can you imagine Softfocus II? I sure can."

"But I honestly can't think of a reason why we'd waste time and offer a staple professional tool like a workhorse 50 prime that has a flat plane of focus, is sharp somewhere other than dead center and has AF that can lock without hunting until next Tuesday. Who the hell needs one of those?"

<p><em>“</em><em>As a photographer, one of the things that excites me the most is having the opportunity to use color to evoke emotion. The Trichromatic Camera System itself becomes a true extension of my vision, and what my eye sees and what my eye wants to express – the camera delivers.</em><em>”</em> – Tony Hewitt, Fine Art Photographer</p>

<p>This pioneering sensor design has also established the lowest and therefore cleanest base ISO of any medium format CMOS sensor. At an impressive ISO 35, the results of the IQ3 100MP Trichromatic are crisp and clean, providing the absolute lowest digital noise for any CMOS system of its size.</p>
<p><em>“The ability to capture an image that reflects exactly what you see the moment you press the shutter button, with little interpretation or conjecture, is a fantastic leap for photography and more importantly, for the integrity of image quality,”</em> said Niels Knudsen, Phase One Image Quality Professor.</p>

Multiple New Diffracitve Optics Lenses Coming from Canon in 2018 [CR2]

HTML:
We <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-ef-600mm-f4-do-br-at-canon-expo/">learned about the development of the EF 600mm f/4 DO IS</a> way back in September 2015 at the Canon EXPO in New York City.</p>
<p>We’re being told that one or two additional DO lens is being developed alongside the EF 600mm f/4 DO IS and the plan is to announce them in late August 2018 ahead of Photokina 2018 in Cologne, Germany.</p>

<p>We’re not sure how well the EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS sold, but I haven’t seen too many of them in peoples kits over the years. A replacement doesn’t make too much sense to us. It definitely wasn’t a bad lens, but I don’t think it was good enough or small enough to justify a purchase once the space saving 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS was announced.</p>
<p>As always, lenses can be hard to nail down as far as announcement time frames go, but we’ll keep asking.</p>
<p><em>More to come….</em></p>

Ireland - along the Wild Atlantic Way - Part 2

Hi everyone,

the second and final part of my trip to Ireland is now online.

The journey continues down to the stunning cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry with Killarney National Park all the way to the southern end of the Island at County Cork.

Everyone Else Has One, Why Not us? Tamron to Announce 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD

HTML:
We’ve <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/patent-tamron-100-400mm-f4-5-6-3-vc/">seen the patent</a>, and soon we’ll see the lens. Tamron is going to join Sigma and Canon with their own 100-400mm lens. The Tamron will be faster than the Sigma at the short end with an f-stop of 4.5 and slower than Canon at the long end at f/6.3. The new lens will obviously be image stabilized and no doubt it’ll be priced aggressively.</p>

<p>Now that Tamron and Sigma are both stepping on Canon’s 100-400mm toes, it’s time Canon get stepping on theirs with a 150-600mm zoom lens. Do you agree?</p>

More G Series PowerShot Cameras on the Way, G5 X Mark II to Feature 1\

HTML:
We’ve already heard a lot of rumbling about an imminent replacement for the PowerShot G1 X Mark II. We’ve reported that the flagship PowerShot will receive a 24mp APS-C sized sensor, instead of the 1.5″ sensor found in the current version.</p>
<p>We’ve been told that the PowerShot G5 X is also receiving a Mark II version shortly, but that the camera will retain the 1″ sized sensor. The new sensor is rumored to be 20.2mp, which is the same resolution of the current camera. The new sensor should be upgraded in image quality and and be equipped with DPAF. We do not know if the camera lens is going to remain 24-105mm (35mm equivalent).</p>

<p>We have moved the PowerShot G5 X to a “don’t buy” along with the PowerShot G1 X Mark II in <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/buyers-guide-category/powershot/">our Buyer’s Guide</a>. We’re still waiting to hear if the PowerShot G3 X will be getting a Mark II version shortly.</p>
<p>While have been unable to confirm an announcement date for the refreshed PowerShot cameras.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Any more Super telephoto lenses with built in extender?

Do you expect to see another drop in extender like the 200-400?

Will this be common place on the next gen Great Whites?

Will Canon have multiple drop in extenders (such as 1.2, 1.4 combined to give 1.7)?

Will Nikon beat Canon to the multiple drop in extenders?

Of course all this is asked in pure fun. Rumors and speculation are great entertainment, especially when they are CR0.0001

Canon Announces Its Newest Professional 4K HDR Reference Display Featuring Stable High-Luminance And

HTML:
<b>MELVILLE, N.Y., September 12, 2017</b> – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the Canon DP-V2411 4K HDR1 Reference Display, a 24-inch display that features stable high luminance and 12G-SDI terminals, ideal for use on-set in broadcasting vans, and in-studio needs.</p>
<p>Highlighting Canon’s proprietary display image processor, LED direct backlight system design and an In-Plane Switching (IPS) LCD screen, the DP-V2411 display provides users with detailed and precise color reproduction as well as high resolution, high contrast and high luminance, allowing for accurate review and confirmation of 4K and HDR video content.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>The DP-V2411 Display reaches peak luminance and full-screen white luminance of 600 cd/m, helping to prevent changes in luminance that can occur depending on the video images being viewed. These video images feature stable high-luminance performance for even more precise luminance and color review confirmation of 4K HDR video when shooting on location or in a studio.</p>
<p>Compared to a 4K reference display equipped with 3G-SDI that would require four cables to transmit 4K 60p footage, the Canon DP-V2411 Display features 12G-SDI terminals requiring a user to only use a single cable. By reducing the number of necessary cables, the display supports more cost-efficient, less time-consuming installation, while reducing weight and saving space.</p>
<p>Alongside the current lineup of Canon 4K HDR reference display, the Canon DP-V2411 supports Electro-Optical Transfer Functions (EOTF) such as Hybrid Log-Gamma, a broadcasting HDR standard; Perceptual Quantizer (PQ), a HDR standard for film production and transfer; and Canon’s proprietary log gammas—Canon Log, Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3. In addition, the new display features convenient shooting assist functions for all HDR standards as a waveform monitor. This displays the luminance level of input signals and a false color function, which overlays different areas of input images with colors depending on their luminance allowing for convenient review and confirmation of HDR images.</p>
<p><strong>Pricing and Availability</strong>

The DP-V2411 is scheduled to be available in early December 2017 for an estimated retail price of $20000.002 . For more information please visit, <a href="https://www.usa.canon.com/">usa</a><a href="https://www.usa.canon.com/">.canon.com</a>.</p>
