Theory: there won't be a Sony A9s or A9r

Hello all,

I was having a good think out on the deck and contemplating cameras and came up with a theory, well more of a hypothesis, as to why we may not see Sony release an A9s or A9r. And here's my thinking:

First, if Sony intends to maintain the A7 series, then an A9r and A9s would have to sit above the A7r and A7s lines. Along with the A7 line, this would mean Sony would have six full frame cameras on the market. While I applaud Sony for what it's doing, I don't know if the market can support six Sony full frame cameras all at once. The problem with this reason is that Sony already does support six full frame cameras since the original A7, A7r, and A7s can still be obtained brand new. That said, there are clear differences between the Mk I and Mk II series. This brings me to my second point.

Second, differentiation. How would Sony differentiate the A9 series from the A7 series? If the primary differences between the A7r/A9r and the A7s/A9s are the bigger battery and the dual card slots, then that doesn't give the A7 series much room to grow. It means that the improvements to the A7 series would be largely limited to the autofocus and the sensor. Again, that doesn't leave much room to grow. If the A9 autofocus system makes its way into the A7III, then presumably it will also be found in the A7rIII and A7sIII. At which point, you're kind of reaching something of a ceiling for autofocus improvements that will make a huge differences to the shooting experience. Add a dual-pixel autofocus system like Canon has, improve the hit-rate and tracking, and there's not much else you can do that'll make potential buyers go "wow" in terms of auotofocus. The sensor is also an issue, particularly for the A7r line. If the A9r has a 50+ mp sensor, where does that leave the A7rIII? Is the A7rIII just going to be an A9r with the smaller battery and no dual card slots? I don't know if that would make sense.

Perhaps the best example of this differentiation problem would be in the A7s line and the A9s. Aside from dual card slots and a bigger battery, the A7sII doesn't have much more you can improve upon. Autofocus is the only thing I can really think of, and that can only be improved so much before you start hitting that ceiling where the improved autofocus is already so good that improvements won't "wow" buyers. From a hardware perspective, a bigger battery and dual card slots are really the only place left for the A7sII to go before you're just incrementally improving the sensor. I don't really see how an A9s can exist alongside an A7sIII.

The way I see it, there are two routes Sony can take.
1) Have the A9 as the typical flagship camera most notable for its speed, similar to how Canon and Nikon both use the 1D designation and Dx designation for the flagships. Then have the A7 series not so much sit below the A9 but along side it with the A7r line as the resolution beast and the A7s line as the low light beast. This would be like how I see the 5DmkIV and D810 as not so much sitting below the 1DxmkII and the D5 respectively but rather along side them as the higher resolution and more well rounded cameras. The A7III would then be more akin to the 6DmkII and D610 as the more affordable option. In many ways, the existing line up already does this as indicated by the price differences between the various A7 cameras; the A7rII clearly sits above the A7II in terms of capability and price point.

2) Drop the A7r and A7s lines and replace them with an A9r and A9s featuring the bigger battery and dual card slots. That would leave the A7II, A7III, etc by itself as, again, the more affordable full frame option as a somewhat dumbed down version of the A9.

But any way you slice it, I don't think having an A7III, A7rIII, A7sIII, A9, A9r, and A9s makes any sense. Not only do I think the market can't support that many series, but I think it would be tough trying to make each of the A7 cameras sufficiently different from their A9 counterparts to justify both lines.

Anyway, just a hypothesis. We'll have to wait and see. I could very well be wrong. After all, I am used to Canon's way of doing things and their mindset, so it could be that my Canon-washed brain just can't see things from a non-Canon perspective.

7DII HDMI output.

Hi Folks.
I have a quick (hopefully) question about the 7DII HDMI output is it suitable for recording?
A bit of the back story, I have been asked to take some photos and maybe some video, the question arose as to whether the camera HDMI output feed was recordable quality, it all started as some photo's then they found that I had the 7DII and asked if I could do some video, I have warned that I am not a videographer, but they said no worries it was just an idea they wanted to work with, haha, I think this may be rapidly spiralling out of control! ::)
If anyone can answer the HDMI question I'd appreciate it, thanks in advance for any help, oh, by the way this all starts tomorrow 10am it is now 10pm.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers, Graham.

Canon posts 40% profit gain, and 70% increase in mirrorless

Canon 2Q financials are out. no great surprises.

2Q was down 5% in unit sales from 2017 2Q, however total units sold is around the same as last year

the big surprise was mirrorless growing 70% for the first half of 2017

http://www.canon.com/ir/finance/earnings/

I truely expect to see canon put alot more muscle behind mirrorless now, it's a serious growth market for them.

The interchangeable-lens camera market continues to recover from the impact of last year’s
earthquake, particularly in developed countries. As such, the pace of market contraction has been
gradually slowing on a global basis. Within this business environment, we sold 1.43 million units in
the second quarter, as we limited the decline to 5%. And for the half, we secured the same level of
unit sales as in the first half of 2016.

In this quarter as well, sales remained strong, particularly for mirrorless cameras. Within this trend,
we grew sales of the EOS M6, a new mirrorless camera that has been highly rated not only for its
high image quality, but also for its compact and lightweight form factor. This camera was designed to
capture demand from people who, for example, are considering a step up to a camera with more
features and better performance. Including this factor, first half unit sales of mirrorless camera grew
more than 70% compared to the same period last year, leading to overall sales growth for
interchangeable-lens cameras.

This also means that canon is outpacing gains this year in mirrorless overall, gaining marketshare.

Canon has sold 2.51 million ILCs so far this year; which probably puts them around 43-46% depending on June's CIPA numbers.

Reviews Canon 6D MK II

I just came accross this review:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/reviews/canon-eos-6d-mark-ii

Interesting:
"In manual mode you’re forced to go into the main menu or quick menu to access exposure compensation, which is a bit of a faff. It’s possible to reassign a button to exposure compensation from the custom functions menu, but in hindsight I’d have preferred it if Canon had merged it with the ISO button as it does on its EOS 5D-series."

Good news that they made this available in the 6D MK II but was hoping it would work like with the 7D MK II

ALERT - TSA declares all cameras need to come out of your bag at security

Ouch: "The TSA just announced that all electronics larger than a cell phone need to be placed into a bin for separate screening."

https://petapixel.com/2017/07/26/tsa-requires-separate-screening-cameras-airports-now/

More, from TSA (see link inside of the PP link above):

"The stronger security measures do not apply to passengers enrolled in TSA Pre✓® who are using TSA Pre✓® lanes. TSA also marked another milestone earlier this month with TSA Pre✓® now available at 200 airports nationwide. Travelers enrolled in TSA Pre✓® do not need to remove shoes, 3-1-1 liquids, laptops, electronics, light outerwear, or belts. The program allows TSA to focus resources on passengers who may pose a high risk to security while providing expedited screening to those travelers who have been identified as low-risk, trusted travelers."

Going out on a very short and sturdy limb here: TSA-Pre membership is about to skyrocket.

D850 moons the 5D4 with its tilt-screen

Agree with Nikon on a design/feature decision (IMHO) the 5D4 got wrong -- a tilty/flippy screen.

Two links:

Pop-up flash RIP as well. That's a nod to Canon's weathersealing position, one would think.

Some Minor Canon Lens Announcement Clarification

We’re still trying to figure out what is coming alongside the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS at the end of August 2017. We’ve seen certification for 3 different SKU’s of lenses made in Malaysia, which has given us some pause.
We’re told by a great source that a “series” of three “high end” lenses is coming in 2017 and they assumed it was the three lenses listed in the certification. Now we’re not so sure if that’s the case strictly because of the manufacturing country. To our knowledge, all “high end” lenses by Canon are made in Japan.
I guess this is a long way of saying that we’re still confident a series of 3 lenses is coming, they may just not be coming with the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS. The lenses in question from the certification could possibly be 3 different colours for the upcoming Canon EOS M20 (name not...

<p><strong>The Ethereal Aesthetics of the World’s First Optic Lens</strong>

Practical photography was invented in 1839, with the combination of a Chevalier Achromat Lens attached to a Daguerreotype camera. The Chevalier lens bathed images in an alluring veil of light and created glazy, soft pictures. The Lomography Daguerreotype Achromat 2.9/64 Art Lens is a revival of this lost aesthetic. Photographers and videographers can delve into an extensive variation of moods and special effects: silky soft focus at f/2.9, crisp sharp shots from f/5.6 onwards, and a focal length of 64mm. The lens works with a Waterhouse Aperture Plate system, which allows full creativity with depth of field and bokeh effects – to soak images in radiant glows, or to produce textured, painterly effects – rarely achieved in photography.</p>
<p><strong>Premium Quality Craftsmanship of the Art Lens Family</strong>

The Daguerreotype Achromat 2.9/64 Art Lens has been designed by Lomography’s expert technicians based on the historic 1839 design – and condensed into a bold brass lens for modern analogue and digital cameras – available in Canon EF and Nikon F mounts, Pentax K mounts (Brass and Black finishing only), and compatible with multitudes of other cameras using adapter available from Lomography. The lens is handcrafted at a small manufactory in Central China, on the banks of the Yangtze river. The beautiful new chrome finishing is designed to undergo heavy usage, and protect the lens from wear and tear. It boasts the premium optic quality that we bring to every lens in the Lomography Art Lens Family – following in the steps of the Lomography New Petzval 85, New Russar+, Lomo LC-A Minitar-1, the Petzval 58 Bokeh Control and Lomography New Jupiter 3+ Art Lenses.</p>
<p><strong>Celebrating in Glitter and Cheer</strong>

To celebrate the arrival of the new edition, events and parties are being organised in Lomography Gallery Stores worldwide. The events will feature live presentations of the lens, special guests, and an international exhibition showcasing photography shot all round the globe with the Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens – inspired by the cool sophistication, rock’n’roll persona, and timeless charm of the new Daguerreotype Achromat Chrome Plated. The imagery will demonstrate the unique aesthetic and special effects of the Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens – mastered to shoot silver nights and golden days, bold portraits, youth culture, the great outdoors; and more.</p>

Eizo ColorEdge CS2420 monitor calibration

I have recently purchased a Eizo ColorEdge CS2420 monitor which comes precalibrated by the manufacture. I have checked this calibration using the supplied Eizo Color Navigator 6 software and a Spyder 5, and have discovered that both the Adobe RGB and sRGB targets it produces when set at 100cd/m2, 6500K and 2.2 Gamma are approximately 0.25 of a stop darker than it's precalibrated state. Is this normal ?, if not any suggestions on how to improve the calibration target would be appreciated.

4K time-lapse coming to 5D4?

I find the built-in time-lapse function in 5D4 handy when the conditions are right, but why just HD and no 4K time-lapse?

The 6D II (which can't shoot 4K movies) has 4K timelapse. What do you think, will Canon add 4K time-lapse in a coming firmware update? A quick look in the 6DII user manual reveals a much better integrated time-lapse function with some usable features that's not available in 5D4. Shouldn't be impossible to get those in a firmware-upgrade for 5D4.

Am I imagining things? (AF accuracy when half pressing vs full pressing shutter)

I tend to do something out of habit and somewhat based on the results I've seen in the past, but I wanted to get everyone else's take on it.

When shooting a moving subject, camera set to one shot AF, it feels to me like the AF tends to nail the focus better if I half-press the shutter button, let the AF do its thing, wait for the camera to give me the red confirmation blink, and then immediately press the shutter button fully. This, as opposed to just holding the shutter button down fully right from the start, and trusting the camera to not release the shutter until its determined that it's achieved focus.

It's a subtle difference, but does make somewhat of a difference time-wise when you're trying to fire off a quick shot. Obviously it's going to be faster to just hold the shutter button fully down and let the camera automatically release the shutter as soon as it gets focus, but it's always kind of seemed to me like the camera kind of "rushes" it when I do this, and takes the photo before the focus is quite locked on, resulting in a blurry subject more often.

Has anyone else noticed something like this, or am I just imagining it? My 5D MkIV seems to do this, and as far as I remember, the MkIII felt similarly.

Now, before you reply, let me clarify a few things...

1) Yes, I know you can set the camera to prioritize taking the photo faster, or achieving better focus while sacrificing some shooting speed. I always have it set to prioritize focus. I've still noticed this phenomenon.

2) Please don't chime in with "You should be using AI servo for moving subjects." I've tried it, one shot just works better in the conditions and at the apertures I'm usually taking photos at.

3) This isn't meant to devolve into a discussion of the merits of back button focus. I've tried this too. While I see its advantages, it has never seemed to be quite as fast as having autofocus driven off of the shutter button. If it is for you, that's fine, but it hasn't seemed to be for me.

Why does the 6D mkii Zoom in when shooting HDR?

Hey! I upgraded from a 60D to the 6D mkii. I've never shot in camera HDR before, and I noticed that the HDR images are slightly more zoomed in than the standard images (shot from s tripod). Why is this? My best guess is that it anticipates the overlay images bring slightly different so it has a standard crop from the edges to compensate? Is this normal?

Could This Be the Goal of the 6D Hysteria?

They say in politics to believe none of what you hear and half of what you see. I wonder if that's also true with photography forums.
While enjoying my new 6D and feeling like I'm owning the world with it someone went and posted a whole thing about how inferior it and it's replacement are. My initial reaction was "NONSENSE", but found myself frantically researching Fuji mirrorless cameras and lenses.
Could the 6D hysteria be a diabolical plot to encourage GAS. It got so bad that I was almost about to buy that Fuji camera and their 10-24 and 35mm lenses, got a hold of myself and immediately cleared out my Wish List on DP Review (except, of course, for the 70-300L that'll serve well when visiting the Marine Corps Silent Drill team, my son's upcoming graduation and the like).
The pending doom of my GAS crisis was the upcoming trip to Italy figuring that a mirrorless system would be ideal. If I order quickly enough I'll have time on the plane to learn how the camera works.
But, alas, GAS would thereby take time away from the family. There'll be a fine balancing act on this trip between trying to get a handful of pics suitable for a magazine cover and spending time with my family. My wife's declaration of "Maybe leave the tripod at home?" was a clue.
Cinque Terre, Florence and Lake Como await (actually starting on this ****** Thursday, by the way) and they shall be captured in all their glory with my beloved 6D and 40mm pancake lens only. Not ideal, but with minimal criticism from my wife and kids and I've completely avoided my wife beating the **** out of me for spending money that probably doesn't need to be spent no matter how you cut it.
GAS be damned!!!!!!!!!!!!! (although I did buy a separate CPL for my 40mm lens vs. a step-up ring, but no one needs to know of this). Resistance need not be futile.

Creative Transitions in Short Films (Holding On)

Hey guys,
Recently made another short film about how one may have trouble moving on from something/someone and how moving on doesn’t mean letting go.. Completely.

I wanted to combine drawings with the film as a way of showing a montage of two students throughout their four years at university. So, I got one of my friend who is really interested in art to draw out different scenarios of the two in those four years - thought this would be a more unique way of showing the passage of time, and I also like the innocence which the drawings bring to their university years.

However, I think my transition between the film and the drawings (and back) could have been better.. And even the transitions between the drawings. Do watch it and let me know what you think of if I could have done anything different!

Recommend a book on Canon DSLR video?

I would like to upgrade my rudimentary video skills. The manual that came with my 77D covers only the very basic steps and doesn't even mention some of the video features.

Is there a fairly recent book available on the use of current Canon DSLRs for video? If not, is there online material from Canon that goes into more depth than the owner's manual?

These Rebel-class bodies are getting so complex that they really deserve some organized learning. I can see why a lot of them get returned by novice users and recycled into the Canon Refurbished program.

Thanks!
