Started a change.org petition to push Canon to make a 50mm

I've always found the petition movement a bit foofy; and the Canon stubbornness in updating its 50mm lenses downright silly. So I combined these things together...

Leica Announces Thalia: New Lenses for Big Picture Cinematography

HTML:
<p><strong>Leica Press Release:</strong></p>
<p>Responding to the increasing need for character-driven, large-format optics, CW Sonderoptic introduces the Leica Thalia series of prime lenses. The set of 9 spherical lenses provides an image circle of 60mm diagonal, which covers ARRI Alexa 65, VistaVision, and Super 35 film and digital formats while maintaining a consistent look and feel through all focal lengths.</p>
<p>The focal lengths of the lenses include 24, 30, 35, 45, 55, 70, 100, 120, and 180mm. The lenses are available in PL mount and offer /i Technology metadata contacts in the mount. The lenses maintain a 95mm front diameter and matched focus and iris ring locations for consistent accessory use. For large format lenses they are also incredibly compact and lightweight, with lengths between 4.9”-6.9” (124.5-175cm) and weighing between 2.4-3.75lbs (1.06-1.6kg).</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>One of the most unique features of the Leica Thalia lenses is their iris design, which maintains a circular shape through the entire aperture range. In addition to always being round, the bokeh is smooth, distinct and full of character, which helps the out of focus elements maintain structure and shape without falling apart.</p>
<p>Although the lenses are based on the Leica S medium format lenses, they feature significant optical and mechanical changes, including: increased image circle, new coatings, new iris design, 270° rotation cam focus mechanism, and entirely new mechanics and housings. Additionally, the 55mm lens is a completely new lens.</p>
<p>“The look of these lenses answers what we have heard from many cinematographers, and not just in regards to image circle,” said managing director Gerhard Baier.</p>
<p>“While they are new lenses, they do offer many of the characteristics that have encouraged cinematographers to pair older lenses with digital sensors. They are clear without being overly sharp. Focus is smooth and forgiving without appearing soft. Skin tones are natural and smooth with an accurate color rendition.”</p>
<p>The Leica Thalia lenses will be on display at the CW Sonderoptic booth at NAB (C4345) and will start delivering in Summer 2017.</p>
<p>For more information visit the product page at <a href="http://www.cw-sonderoptic.com/leica-thalia/" target="_blank">www.cw-sonderoptic.com/leica-thalia/</a> or contact us at [email protected].</p>

Canon Working on New Lens Technology

HTML:
<p>Focus Numerique had the opportunity to interview Canon executives about all things lenses at the Utsunomiya L lens factory in Japan and gave us a little bit of information about new lens technology coming.</p>
<p><strong>From the interview: </strong></p>
<blockquote><p>French: Sans pouvoir vous en dire plus, nous sommes en train de développer une nouvelle technologie qui apportera une réelle valeur ajoutée et permettra de prendre un nouveau type de photo.</p>
<p>Translation: Without being permitted to tell you more, we are developing a new technology that will bring real added value and will allow to take a new type of photo.</p></blockquote>
<p>What new type of photography are they talking about? Hopefully it’s not some new kind of way to take selfies.</p>

Is there a correct choice for a backpack on a RTW trip?

First off, let me say, I wasn't sure which category to place this question under, but do you all have any suggestions on a pack that can carry my 24" rhino slider, dslr, two speedlights, 4 L lenses, a 13" laptop, my mavic drone, and still have room for a little bit of clothing? I know this is a lot. I was thinking of getting a 40L osprey bag, but they're not geared toward Photography. I will be in Iceland for two weeks, Europe for three months, and hopefully Asia for 3 months as well. Maybe I should buy a big osprey bag and stuff my exsisting bag into that one? I'm kinda at a loss so any advice we be appreciated. Thanks

Ps: I don't want a rolling pack. I need something to carry on my back!

Canon 430 III-RT Overheat Protection Issue

Hi everybody :)

I've just picked up a 430 III-RT to use as a secondary flash unit along side my 600RT.

I've been reading some user reviews and although the majority of users agree this is a great flash, there are others who have written that the overheat protection mode is a fail. Apparently it kicks in after about 32 cycles and falls well short of the 430 II's performance.

Can anybody guide on this and whether there's been firmware fixes to address this? I couldn't find anything on the net.

Thanks all :)

Wow: Ming Thein = H'Blad's new Chief of Strategy

A familiar name in photography circles just took a very impressive turn:

https://petapixel.com/2017/03/29/hasselblad-hires-photographer-ming-thein-chief-strategy/

For those not familiar, Ming walks a very interesting line between working photographer, gear head and blogger. I've enjoyed his blog and photoessays, yet it was always clear how picky he was about gear -- he wrote at great length on the subject.

Anyway, FYI on the story. No sure exactly what sort of access/influence this gives him, but it sounds a great deal more than just being a consultant / explorer of light / etc. Good on him.

Canon Celebrates its 14th Consecutive Year of No. 1 Marketshare in Global Interchangeable-Lens Digit

HTML:
<p><strong>MELVILLE, N.Y., March 29, 2017</strong> – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today that its parent company, Canon Inc., announced that the Company’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 14 consecutive years from 2003 to 20161.</p>
<p>Canon Inc., which develops the key components featured in its interchangeable-lens cameras—CMOS image sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses —employs these cutting-edge technologies across its entire product lineup, from entry-level models that achieve high-image quality with easy operation to professional-use flagship cameras, effectively responding to the needs of a wide range of users.</p>
<p>In 2003, the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Digital Rebel. This groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, captured the top share of the global market and set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of epoch-making products, including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series which paved the way for digital SLR video recording.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>During 2016, Canon introduced an impressive lineup of interchangeable-lens camera products that supported the Company’s achievement of a 14th consecutive year at the top of the global market. In March, the Company released the EOS 80D for advanced-amateur users, which features excellent still image quality and superb operability when shooting video. Then in April, the Company released its flagship model, the EOS-1D X Mark II, ideal for sport photography thanks to its 14 frame-per-second continuous shooting capability. The EOS 5D Mark IV, capable of 4K video, was then released in September. Additionally, the Company’s interchangeable-lens camera lineup expanded with the introduction of the high-end EOS M5 compact-system camera in November.</p>
<p>Canon will continue to respond to the needs of its wide range of customers by further bolstering its lineup in 2017. Already this year, the Company launched three new interchangeable-lens cameras equipped with the highly accurate autofocus technology, Dual Pixel CMOS AF – the EOS M6 compact-system camera, the EOS 77D and EOS Rebel T7i.</p>

Cleaned 5D4 sensor for first time - remarkable finding of no dust

Just because I was testing out some cleaning equipment (love the Carson camera sensor lit sensor magnifier, by the way), I opted to clean my 5D4's sensor. What was remarkable was that there was *no* dust on it after having used it extensively since it came out, and in somewhat dusty environments with lots of lens changes. I really did not expect that.

I have not had much trouble with sensor dust generally, but I'd never had a camera with 0 dust after half a year. This has been my primary body, and I'm guessing I've gone through 300-500 lens changes with it since I received it.

-tig

PS: Equally remarkable is how MUCH dust my beloved 100-400 II has inside it. I think I'd classify it as "furry." I once owned the Mark I version of it, which came in for all sorts of dust criticism, but I think the new model is even better at collecting it. I got to thinking last night playing around with this carson sensor thing that I might be able to rig it with some gaffers tape to take an image of the dust on the internal elements of the lens. If I manage that, I'll post it here.

More Golf

I was able to shoot the Puerto Rico Open for the 2nd time this year. This year i went back with better equipment and the cool resolve of an experienced pro. And immediately encountered tons of problems. Rain, heavy expensive equipment, more rain, power outages, distant muddy parking, a very grumpy photo editor... It was a whole lot of fun.

Crop Factor Change for 4K on Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Included in Coming Update & More

HTML:
We have been sent more information about the upcoming C-Log update to the EOS 5D Mark IV, while this comes from a new source, it’s pretty detailed.</p>
<p><strong>Canon EOS 5D Mark IV C-Log Update:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>All video output will still be 8-bit.</li>
<li>Sampling for DCI 4K will be increased to a 5632 x 2970 pixel sensor area resulting in a 1.27x Crop factor.</li>
<li>Sampling for UHD will be from a 5472 x 3078 pixel sensor area resulting in a 1.29x Crop factor.</li>
<li>Both modes are accurately down-sampled to their final resolutions.</li>
<li>Existing frame rates will remain the same.</li>
<li>The current 1:1 4K sampling mode will remain an option for situations benefiting from the 1.78x Crop factor.</li>
<li>There will also be new full-sensor 3K modes added including 60fps and HDR 24fps.Both will use a line-alternating sampling method, so quality will be inferior to the improved 4K format (but better than the existing FullHD 1080p format.) It is unclear whether the file resolution in the final firmware will be the full 3360 x 1890 format or down-sampled to 3072 x 1728.</li>
<li>FullHD 1080p will also use this 3K full-sensor mode with down-sampling for a noticeable improvement in perceived resolution.</li>
<li>FullHD 1080p will also receive a modest frame rate boost to 72/75fps.</li>
<li>The EOS 5D Mark IV will gain the XF-AVC file format at 120Mbps (4:2:0) and 200Mbps (4:2:2). Both formats should require low enough data rates to accommodate UHS-I U3 type SD Cards.</li>
<li>Reports relating to a possible service job for the 5D Mark IV are the result of the heat sinks on current units not performing well in some environments when used with the newer firmware. This is because of the increased processing load from the enlarged video sampling area. Newer units will ship with an improved heat sink while existing 5D Mark IV units can be retrofitted. Pricing is unconfirmed for that servicing.</li>
<li>The newer firmware will still work in non-serviced cameras, but this may result in premature temperature warnings.</li>
</ul>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Selling 70-200 F4 IS and 400 5.6 for 100-400 F4.5-5.6 II???

Im primary a wildlife shooter and as being such I have been satisfied with my Canon EF 400 5.6 L lens for that purpose, while also appreciating my 70-200 F4 IS for more general purpose. Having IS is certainly appealing, even if I use tripod more often than not. I would also spare some space and weight by that switch. As far as I'm concerned, 100-400 zoom is quite up to 400 5.6 in both optical quality and af performance.
So would you make that switch, is it reasonable?

Sigma announces 14mm f1.8 full frame lens

Somehow this one slipped past me until now. But I have to say, this is very interesting. It's one thing when Sigma started making high quality "art" lenses that were equivalent or maybe just a little shy of the specs of the comparable Canon lenses. But now they're starting to make certain lenses with focal length/aperture specs that surpass anything offered from Canon themselves. I was disappointed to see mediocre reviews for their new 12-24mm lens, suggesting they still don't quite have the R&D power that Canon does. But it will be very interesting to see how this lens is.

Help me pick a MFT lens

So I'm in the market for a small MFT camera and I've pretty much settled on a body. The question now is what lens. I'm torn between

Olympus 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 II R and the Panasonic 12-32mm f3.5-5.6 Mega O.I.S.

I'm having a hard time coming up with a good comparison between the two. Based on IQ (differences in focal length notwithstanding), which one is the optically superior lens?
