C-Log Coming to the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV?

HTML:
We <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/new-firmware-for-eos-5d-mark-iv-coming-soon-cr2/">reported back at the beginning of March</a> that we were going to see new firmware for the EOS 5D Mark IV in the near future, though at that time we didn’t know what might be included in the firmware.</p>
<p>We’ve now been told by a couple of people that there has been active communication within Canon about C-Log being added to the EOS 5D Mark IV via firmware, and that an announcement could come at NAB 2017 next month in Las Vegas.</p>
<p>We cannot confirm with 100% certainty at the time of writing this, but things seem to be lining up that we can expect some kind of a major firmware announcement for the EOS 5D Mark IV.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Interview With the Heads of the Canon Utsunomiya L Lens Factory

HTML:
During DPReview’s tour of the Utsunomiya L lens factory, they had the opportunity to interview the 3 men that oversee the facility. This factory produced every L lens, cinema lens and broadcast lens in the Canon lineup.</p>
<p><strong>From the interview:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p><strong>What percentage of L lenses are manufactured in the Utsunomiya lens plant?</strong>

Because this is the ‘mother’ factory, 100% of L lenses are made here.</p>
<p><strong>How many different lenses can be manufactured simultaneously in this plant?</strong>

Basically, we create all lenses every day [including L-series EF, Cinema EOS and broadcast]. The only exception is some of the broadcast lenses.</p>
<p><strong>Which lenses in particular are the most difficult to manufacture and why?</strong>

Any large super telephoto lenses because of the size of the glass elements. In terms of skill required for lens assembly: the TV broadcast lenses are most difficult.</p>
<p><strong>How many lenses are produced at this lens plant every year, both in terms of types of lenses and total units?</strong>

We do not disclose total production for this plant. That said, Canon has produced a total of 120 million lenses over the years. Of course, many of those are kit lenses, which are not produced here, but in our facility in Taiwan. <a href="https://www.dpreview.com/interviews/4536277079/canon-lens-factory-interview">Read the full interview</a></p></blockquote>
<p>It’s nice to see Canon opening up a bit about how they manufacture what we think are consistently the best lenses in the world (No bias, honest!).</p>

DPReview Tours Canon's Utsunomiya Factory, Where the L is Made

HTML:
DPReview had the priviledge of touring Canon’s Utsunomiya factory during their time at CP+ in Yokohama, Japan.</p>
<p><strong>From DPReview:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Recently, following the CP+ 2017 show in Yokohama, we were granted the enormous honor of a guided tour through Canon’s Utsunomiya lens factory. Canon has been making lenses in Utsunomiya since 1977, and we were the first journalists ever to be allowed to see the L-series assembly line. <a href="https://www.dpreview.com/articles/4996495413/the-home-of-the-l-series-we-tour-canon-utsunomiya-factory">View the full tour</a></p></blockquote>
<p>The best part? Robots that deliver various components around the factory on pre-programmed routes.</p>

New Toy

I've been thinking of a backup DSLR for my D MK III, since I'm not ready to upgrade it yet, I was looking for something cheap but capable. I spotted a old 1D MK III today on our local craigslist for a decent price. It was purchased locally new, used only to photograph the owners children and vacations, and is spotless, not a scratch. It is complete with everything as new plus a extra battery. One of the things I liked about the 1D II from years back was the way image color and contrast popped. I'll see if thats still the case.

I just snapped a couple of quick shots with it, 10mp is certainly not much. I thought I remembered that my old one had AFMA, but I guess not. If I see any issues with my lenses, I'll probably just trade up, but my first shots were sharp enough. Most of my use will be product photography where I use live view and MF. The charger acts as a ac adapter, so I can operate it for long periods without running the batteries down. The sensor has never been cleaned, so I'll be checking for the almost certain dust and dirt on it.

EOS 5D IV for Manual Focus

Has anybody else with a 5D IV noticed how much easier manual focus seems to be? I've plunged into macro lately with a Sigma 180mm f/2.8, and I've been fine tuning focus with MF.

The view finder seems to have a very subtle, tightly pitched grid pattern noticeable when I focus close on small targets. (Works on all my lenses.)

I don't remember reading about this anywhere, and I'm not seeing anything with quick Google searches.

In any event, I haven't enjoyed MF in years, and now I'm finding it to be much less of a chore (when I have time to get it right).

Interview With Kenji Tanaka, Head of Sony ILC Business

HTML:
<p>An interview with Sony’s head of their ILC business that was originally posted on Imaging Resource has surfaced over at Sony Addict, as it appears Imaging Resource pulled it for whatever reason.</p>
<p>It’s an interesting interview, as it really gives you a good idea about Sony’s philosophy on growing the mirrorless camera space.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://sonyaddict.com/2017/03/18/image-resource-interview-kenji-tanaka/">Sony Addict</a> broke down the major points of the interview:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Some sensors are reserved for Sony (Maybe this is why no one else is using their 42MP Full Frame sensor)</li>
<li>Sony invested billions in sensor technology and lenses</li>
<li>The Full Frame market is the most stable, but Sony wants to grow it slowly</li>
<li>“Before 42 megapixels… nobody needed such a resolution……but right now, people enjoy 42-megapixel cameras.”</li>
<li>“Now we are focused on three essential factors. One is of course the resolution, and another is the sensitivity, and third is the speed.”</li>
<li>Sports shooters target one millisecond in time so they might enjoy shooting 100-120fps</li>
<li>There is room for AF speed and intelligence improvement</li>
<li>Nikon/Canon use two systems for AF so their system can’t be intelligent. Our system can be intelligent because our sensor manages the AF.</li>
<li>AF and Exposure could benefit from Intelligence (AI)</li>
<li>The real advantage of mirrorless is direct information not the lack of a mirror.</li>
<li>An early problem with mirrorless was getting the data off the chip fast enough. Now the problem is interpreting all the data.</li>
<li>Sony a7RII mainly brought in customers form other systems, but Sony hopes to grow the ILC market beyond current DSLR/ILC users.</li>
<li>“I have said, too, that amateurs, people who don’t consider themselves photographers, like moms and dads, they need more advanced technology than the pros, because they’re the ones who more than anything need smart cameras and intelligent sensors. So maybe that will come.”</li>
<li>Full frame is their primary area</li>
<li>The price difference between Full Frame and APS-C could get closer together with time.</li>
<li>“I want to show our technology. The technology can change the future. Right now, I think American people still think the DSLR structure with mirror and shutter is best. But the technology can change that kind of way. And I think only Sony can do it.<strong> </strong>So I want to explain why the future is changing. And sensor is one aspect, and the lens is another one. Of course, intelligence is another aspect, but there are many technologies we have, so these things I want to tell your users. And of course [by combining] these technologies we create new cameras. So I want to show you the new camera…mirrorless can take a photo that the even professional DSLRs couldn’t capture.”</li>
</ul>
<p>You can head over the <a href="http://sonyaddict.com/2017/03/18/image-resource-interview-kenji-tanaka/">Sony Addict</a> for a cached version of the entire interview.</p>

Any tips for south-west Connecticut (or close NY areas)?

Hi there!

Last time I went to US for a couple weeks, I got really great tips, so now I'm trying the same, but for three months...

I will spend May, June and July in and around Fairfield County (Stamford, CT). My wife is on assignment from work and I took time off (should a job opportunity arise, I would return to stay longer).

Anyway, as I will have time, should somebody have a tip for a road trip, some cool nature spots/parks, events... please let me know. So far, in May I will be traveling/shooting at the Ragnar Cape Cod relay race which I'm looking forward to as I like Cape Cod and liked the Ragnar Adirondacks last year. Later I would like to do a loop with Niagara, Toronto and Montreal.

Also, should somebody from the area want to meet and talk, or have an assistant at a cool job, I would like some interesting experience.

Aaand, in case you will be selling some cheap-ish, dependable car in early May (or want to rent it out for 3 months), lets hear it ;)

Thank you,

Stig

Post your best Europe photos

Whether you travel to Europe (like me) or live there, let's see some great photos. I am looking for images that clearly feel European, from a Parisian café to a cityscape. Please try to refrain from generic photos that could be anywhere (like a closeup of a flower that you post because it happened to be in a garden in England, for example).

I will start with a cityscape of Salzburg, Austria from a trip last month.

Announcing Guetzli: A New Open Source JPEG Encoder

HTML:
<div class="post-header">
<div class="published"><strong>From Google:</strong></div>
<div class="published">
<p><em><span class="byline-author">Posted by Robert Obryk and Jyrki Alakuijala, Software Engineers, Google Research Europe</span></em></p>
<p>At Google, we care about giving users the best possible online experience, both through our own services and products and by contributing new tools and industry standards for use by the online community. That’s why we’re excited to announce <a href="https://github.com/google/guetzli/">Guetzli</a>, <a href="http://arxiv.org/abs/1703.04421">a new open source algorithm</a> that creates high quality JPEG images with file sizes 35% smaller than currently available methods, enabling webmasters to create webpages that can load faster and use even less data.</p>
<p>Guetzli [guɛtsli] — <i>cookie</i> in Swiss German — is a JPEG encoder for digital images and web graphics that can enable faster online experiences by producing smaller JPEG files while still maintaining compatibility with existing browsers, image processing applications and the JPEG standard. From the practical viewpoint this is very similar to our <a href="https://github.com/google/zopfli">Zopfli</a> algorithm, which produces smaller <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Network_Graphics">PNG</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gzip">gzip</a> files without needing to introduce a new format, and different than the techniques used in <a href="https://research.googleblog.com/2016/09/image-compression-with-neural-networks.html">RNN-based image compression</a>, <a href="https://blog.google/products/google-plus/saving-you-bandwidth-through-machine-learning/">RAISR</a>, and <a href="https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/">WebP</a>, which all need client and ecosystem changes for compression gains at internet scale.</p>
<p>The visual quality of JPEG images is directly correlated to its multi-stage compression process: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YUV">color space transform</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrete_cosine_transform">discrete cosine transform</a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantization_(image_processing)">quantization</a>. Guetzli specifically targets the quantization stage in which the more visual quality loss is introduced, the smaller the resulting file. Guetzli strikes a balance between minimal loss and file size by employing a search algorithm that tries to overcome the difference between the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_visual_system_model">psychovisual</a> modeling of JPEG’s format, and <a href="https://github.com/google/butteraugli">Guetzli’s psychovisual model</a>, which approximates color perception and visual masking in a more thorough and detailed way than what is achievable by simpler color transforms and the discrete cosine transform. However, while Guetzli creates smaller image file sizes, the tradeoff is that these search algorithms take significantly longer to create compressed images than currently available methods.</p>
<table class="tr-caption-container" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td><em><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/image00.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28777" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/image00.png" alt="" width="480" height="160" /></a></em></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="tr-caption"><em>Figure 1. 16×16 pixel synthetic example of a phone line hanging against a blue sky — traditionally a case where JPEG compression algorithms suffer from artifacts. Uncompressed original is on the left. Guetzli (on the right) shows less ringing artefacts than libjpeg (middle) and has a smaller file size.</em></td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
<p>And while Guetzli produces smaller image file sizes without sacrificing quality, we additionally found that in <a href="http://arxiv.org/abs/1703.04416">experiments</a> where compressed image file sizes are kept constant that human raters consistently preferred the images Guetzli produced over libjpeg images, even when the libjpeg files were the same size or even slightly larger. We think this makes the slower compression a worthy tradeoff.</p>

<p>It is our hope that webmasters and graphic designers will find Guetzli useful and apply it to their photographic content, making users’ experience smoother on image-heavy websites in addition to reducing load times and bandwidth costs for mobile users. Last, we hope that the new explicitly psychovisual approach in Guetzli will inspire further image and video compression research.</p>

*UPDATE* Another Camera Store Burglary, This Time Midwest Photo Exchange is the Victim

HTML:
<strong>*UPDATE*

</strong>Midwest Photo Exchanged has released a few more bits of information about their burglary.</p>
<p>The perpetrators entered the building by cutting a hole in the roof and slid down a pole to gain entrance to the stock room, where they were able to carry off hundreds of lenses and cameras.</p>
<p>Below are two images of one of the assailants as well as suspects casing the store prior to the incident.</p>
<p><strong>From MPEX:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Regarding the burglary at Midwest photo, we just found footage of 4 suspects casing the building starting on 3/14 around <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_1967845299"><span class="aQJ">1 pm</span></span>. They are in what looks like a Jeep Cherokee from the robbery and we see them surveil the entry point and we see them walk around the building and check doors around the building. They come in in 2 pairs at separate times from the same vehicle. Based on our discussions with other camera stores we do believe this to be connected to several robberies from dealers in other states.</p></blockquote>

<p><strong>Original Post</strong></p>
<p>Midwest Photo Exchange in Columbus, Ohio, a Canon Rumors partner, was victim of a burglary this week. This follows a burglary at <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/more-than-200000-in-lenses-stolen-from-veydra-optics/">Veydra Optics earlier this week</a>.</p>
<p>Camera stores have always been targets for thefts, but it seems there have been far more high value burglaries of retail and rental houses over the last few years.</p>
<p>From MPEX:</p>
<blockquote><p>In the late night hours of March 15th Midwest Photo in Columbus, Ohio suffered a break in to their new facility.</p>
<p>This break in appears to have been pre meditated and carried out by experienced individuals. They strategically entered the building in such a manner that they were able to go undetected long enough to steal hundreds of cameras, lenses and accessories. Police and local detectives are involved as this break in is potentially a part of a larger crime wave going throughout the Midwest at this time.</p>
<p>Missing serial numbers are being tallied as we speak and Midwest is employing web scraping software to track them in the event that they show up for sale online anywhere.</p>
<p>Midwest Photo was able to quickly recover from this very unfortunate event and was only closed for a few hours <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_1273660738"><span class="aQJ">on Thursday</span></span> as they accounted for the missing inventory. Through strong relationships and great support from their vendors and customers Midwest Photo is conducting business as usual as of today. If anyone has any information please email <a href="mailto:[email protected]" target="_blank">[email protected]</a></p></blockquote>
<p>If the serial numbers become public, we will update this post.</p>

Site Security

Hi.

Firefox has recently updated to yet another new version.

Crucially this has a new catch for sites that ask for passwords, in that it warns you if it isn't using an https connection but http instead, which apparently allows "bad people" to see your password.

I first found this out trying to log in here.

I've gone and checked and it seems that if I come to the front page then click on the forums tab the page it takes me to (with the login in the top right hand corner) isn't https.

Is this something to do with the link the site has in it, or is it my PC?

Switzerland-Confused about gear choice

We will be visiting Switzerland for 9 days starting April 1st. This is a once in a lifetime trip and we are looking forward to take some good pictures ( only reason to visit actually)

I need help with gear selection .

I am mainly interested in a) Landscape b) Environmental portraits c) Old castles and buildings d) sunrise and sunset

I may have access to the following gears :

Bodies: Canon 1DxMKII/1Dx/5DIV/5DsR/7DMKII
Lenses: Canon : 11-24/ 16-35/24-70/70-200/100-400 /200-400/24/35/85/200
Zeiss Otus: 28/55/85. Also 35/135

I want to take not more than 5 lenses and 2-3 bodies, preferably 2

Please give me your choices and advice- those will be invaluable to me.

Thanks a lot in advance

Northrup on Nikon's current state of affairs

Tony Northtrup, on the day Nikon announced its 'extraordinary loss', riffed on the state of that business:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uyJVCHDlzU

Eye-rolling banter for the most part, yes, but it was an amusing listen in the background (think of it like a podcast you could have a look at when he said something interesting).

0-16 minutes = How did Nikon get here financially, why is Nikon not really in that much trouble, comments about restructuring, good/bad product development cancellation decisions, etc.

16-35 minutes = ideas for how Nikon could rally with future products:

  • VR is lame, IBIS is the way to go (VR makes lenses softer, apparently)
  • He wants EVFs, even in SLRs -- he argues it will eliminate chimping 'because a histogram is in the viewfinder'. ::)
  • Improve video AF
  • "Be cooler" -- he wants a retro styled rig, not a 'dorky tourist camera from the 80s'
  • Pro-quality APS-C lenses to let the D500 be a do-everything camera: shots with FX lenses on DX bodies are softer than on FF bodies
  • Throw out their long-standing SLR interface. He wants cell phone-like interfaces on their cameras -- I largely disagree with this, but he has a fair point that you can't search for an obscure setting anywhere on an SLR like you can search for content (cross-application) on a phone.
  • Truly silent (electronic / MLU) shutters
  • Free updates that are better than vanilla firmware tweaks -- these would be interface upgrades and expansions to functionality to fire up current owners.
  • He's surprised an OVF-centric company doesn't have the great eye detect of other cameras like [lists two mirrorless rigs]. ::)
  • He wants an open ecosystem and apps: "I realize this will take a year to develop"

"Nikon, if you do these things people will be so excited about the cameras. I know you might not make a lot of money right away by giving out free updates but you will build up a community of enthusiasts."

Canon 400 2.8 II v. 200-400

I currently have the Canon 400 2.8 II and am considering selling it for a used 200-400. Can those who have used both weigh in on whether this would be a good decision? I've noticed the 200-400 is now the norm on sidelines as the 400 has been becoming a rare sight.

What's drawing me to the 200-400 is the versatility of the zoom. My current setup for field sports now is the 400, the 300 2.8 II and 70-200. With the 200-400, I'd need only that and the 70-200, eliminating the clumsiness of having to quickly change among three cameras.

The cons for the 200-400 for me are the f/4 aperture and the high price due to the built in convertor (a feature I'd never use). Is this lens sharp enough to shoot wide open at f/4 most of the time?

Thoughts?

HTML:
<p>Canon will announce an EF-S 35mm f/2.8 M IS STM on April 5, 2017. What we find unique about this announcement is the “M” in the lens description. We’re not sure what that means…</p>
<p><strong>Here are a couple of ideas off the top of my head:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Macro mode?</li>
<li>EOS M compatible?</li>
<li>Leica made it?</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Here are the best reader ideas:</strong></p>

</ul>
<p>What do you think?</p>
<p>Availability and pricing are not known at this time, but we don’t have long to wait.</p>
