sensor dust 1DX Mark II compared to 1DX MI

Hello there
I have 2 1DX MI's and use them obviously for sport and really most of the time with a lens at f2.0 or f2.8.
From the beginning i feel i cant use it for my studio work that is done at f11. I still have 2 5DMIII's for all my studio work for that reason - while i change lenses only very rarely on all bodies (part of the reason why i have 4 bodies) and treat my cameras very well and not really use them in heavy conditions, (mud, dirt) i have way more sensor dust on the 1DX's bodies compared to my 5DMIII's.
For me it really is that i use my 1DX's only wide open in terms of aperture. I can live with it but really want to upgrade to DXII - but would need to get rid of the 5DMIII's to free up some money. Is there anyone here using his 1DX MII at f11 or f16 on a regular base and how does it look in terms of dust spots ?
I send my 1DX to Canon on a regular base for cleaning the sensor - no way i would use them for my studio work right now. I dont need 50MP or so, the 20 of the 1DXMII would be fine for me for studio as well.
And yes, i do use the sensor clean function on a regular base as well automatic during on/off.

Venus LAOWA 15mm f4 1:1 wide angle macro

I couldnt see a thread dedicated to this rather unique lens so thought I would start one up.

It is a great lens for capturing closeups of small animals while at the same time, with its wide angle FOV, providing the viewer with an idea of the habitat within which the animal lives. However, as always in photography, there is a trade-off as it is manual aperture and manual focus, and doesnt report to the camera body. This can make it a major pain to use, but when everything comes together it is a wonderful, inexpensive toy.

Small Lighting Setup - Does CRI Matter? (LED vs CFL)

Hello all. I'm looking to put together a small lighting setup for some product shot-style photography as well as newborn/baby shooting. All work is personal, but will be shared so it still needs to be good (yes I know "good" is relative and grandma will always think shots of granddaughter are amazing). A friend has a few multi-lamp CFL heads with softboxes, but it's missing bulbs. I've read that CFLs typically have a CRI of 80, and I can find equivalent or better LEDs with CRI of 90/94. Thus I have a few questions.

If I'm buying bulbs anyway, should I go for the higher CRI LEDs or is 80 really "good enough"? I know lots of lighting kits are sold with CFLs, so I want to think 80 is fine, but they also sold pet rocks for years - basically being sold doesn't necessarily equate to quality.

Is a low(er) CRI something that can be corrected in Lightroom? I understand that lower CRI means gaps/spikes in the output color spectrum, but does it generally mean missing color(s) or dips that can be adjusted for?

Before everyone jumps on the "just use flash/strobe" train, I don't work in a studio environment at all and I'm much more comfortable with continuous lighting from time in film & theatre. I've played with the two flashes I own, but I'm just not at a comfort level that I trust. Plus, I'm able to borrow a buddy's setup, as mentioned above.

Thanks, in advance.

Best lens options for safari in private game reserve

We'll be travelling to southern Africa this year for a trip I've wanted to do my entire life. The safari part of the vacation (half will be spent exploring the Western Cape) will take place at Tintswalo Lodge in the Manyeleti, South Africa and Mashatu, just across the border in Botswana. Both are private game reserves and at one of them, we'll have our own private vehicle. At the other, vehicles are limited to 6 people and we're 4 - so it'll be almost private.

For cameras, I currently own a 1Dx2 and plan to rent a 5d4 to use as a backup camera. My main debate comes to lenses. Due to weight restrictions, I can take only one big telephoto. For those who have been on safaris, which of the following options would be better?

a) 200-400/1.4x on 1Dx2. 70-200/2.8 II on 5d4.
b) 600/4 II on 1Dx2, 100-400 II on 5d4

Thank you for your help.

100-400L IS I vs 400L/5.6 for beginner wildlife/birds/sports

Right now I'm in search for the best begginer wildlife/bird/sports lens.
I've already bought the 7D just for that, now I'm looking for the best lens for under 1000$ used.
I've read through and watched many and many reviews, some people say and show in the charts that 100-400L is less sharp than 400L/5.6 (like Tony Northrup), some says and shows the opposite, or at least that 100-400L is not less sharp than 400L/5.6 (photozone.de).

I know that a mid sample of 400L/5.6 might be really a tad sharper than, for example, mid sample of 100-400L, and it is lighter than 100-400L. But I'm a novice, I sure will have problems with finding target without zooming capabilities of 100-400L, and this IS do matters too.

300L/4 IS with 1.4 TC is another story, which I like less than two mentioned above because of TC. But it can also be an option.

So, what you'll say?

Canon EOS M5 Review from Dustin

Hi everyone. I recently did a trip to Arizona where I packed only two EOS M5 bodies along with a handful of lenses, including the 18-150 STM, 22mm STM, 55-200 STM, Rokinon 12mm f/2, and EF 50mm f/1.8 STM + adapter (pretty much the kinds of lenses most people will use with the system). I got a lot of great pictures, used the cameras in a lot of different environments, and came back with some conclusions.

banzai F35 and F-16IQ

We got best of spotting in Dec when we catch Japanese F-35A .... we also caught an Iraqi F-16IQ testing out the drag chute.... this drag chute test for Lockheed martin only comes on the 3rd or 4th flight for the jet!

Lucky us to have caught that plus our local unit and visiting units came .... the unique one is our 301st FW doing a tandem low key option! I ahve shot them so much but never doing this in tandem.

Production of ef 24-105mm f/4L II: Pause, refresh, or just lagging?

If Canon did pause production of the ef 24-105mm f/4L II, was it to address sharpness concerns in early reviews? Fix something more serious?

If Canon did tweak the lens, how would its marketing department get the word out...And would a tweak leave Canon open to massive returns or repair demands from the kit buyers?

As of mid-January, 2017, the lens still seems to be unavailable as a buy-alone item from authorized dealers in the USA.

Did the ef 50mm f/1.2L undergo a quiet refresh sometime after initial release?

200mm f/1.8L not for portraits

Hey all. This is partly a bit of fun, as I'm well aware you shouldn't let a forum make big decisions for you. However, that being said, I'd like your input...

The question is, is the 200 f/1.8L a good choice for someone who *doesn't* do much portraiture?

I've lusted after it for many years. The other lenses I dreamt of, one by one, I have bought - some of them I subsequently sold. I'm not sentimental and will happily sell something I haven't used enough. The 85L was dreamy but got too little use - a little too bulky, too much CA, and above all, too valuable to keep, when I could spend that on other things. On the other hand, my MP-E will be with me forever.

Last year I got the Sigma 180mm f/2.8 OS macro. It was lovely, but my copy was faulty, so I returned it and got the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II. It's good, but not nearly as sharp wide open at 200mm as the Sigma, in my opinion. I have used it for astro work though (and this is ongoing).

I could sell it and get a new Sigma with cash to spare. But I'll always dream of the Canon 200L f/1.8L. I can't afford its f/2 IS replacement in the foreseeable future. I know the 1.8 has been used for some high end astro projects, and is a superlative portrait lens. But what about the rest of the time? It's front-heavy, and big, but how is it for other uses? Flowers, landscapes, insects, architecture. With an extension tube if necessary.

All thoughts welcome. Thanks!

PS I'm well aware the 1.8 is no longer supported by Canon, and runs the risk of being useless if the AF motor fails (although it can still be sold for parts). But the difference between it and the f/2 is around £2k at present prices.

Scotland trip

Hello,

Hopefully this is the right forum. I'll be on a layover in Scotland for 24 hours in May. I'll have a rental car from Glasgow. I plan to spend most of my time in Edinburgh. Any recommendations for great scenery/landscapes anywhere in the area or anything else I should do? With such limited time, I can't spend all day at a national park, so just some specific locations please.

Thanks

IS performance test

Does anybody know some good tests of image stabilisation on lenses?
What is the maximal usable shutter speed on an lens an IS can stabilize?

An german magazine did one and was not really impressed by the IS of the 70-200 II 2.8
They see the 70-200 is only able to stabilize the lens at shorter than 1/200s on an 80D.
Winner is the Fuji Fujinon 2.8 50-140mm (shorter than 1/4 s)

Tested on an steve 6D system.

Best price on canon 11- 24 L lens...? $2799?

Hi all!!

I'm thinking about trying to learn to shoot real estate, and thinking the Csnon 11-24L lens would be about the best all around lens to get for this, to add to my collection.
I'm seeing them out now for -$200 off list, at $2799.

Is this about the best price I'm likely to see anytime in the near future, other than maybe catching a canon refurb that seems to go for $2399?

Isn't this a somewhat recent lens release?

Thanks in advance,

Cayenne

Going beyond 600mm

From time to time, I find shooting either distant wildlife (mainly deer) or motorcycle racing and coming up wanting to have more reach than I have today.

Today, I use a 300mm f/2.8L II + 2x TC III on either 5D3 or 1DX (Mk I), so this is my baseline.
I also have the 1.4x TC III, so this in combination with a lens is definitely a possibility.

Without setting a budget (I'd have to save up anyway or possibly rent the lens the few times I'll need it), I've been consideringthe following:
- 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II (+1.4x TC)
- 200-400mm f/4L 1.4x EXT (+1.4x TC / 2x TC)
- 600mm f/4L II (+1.4x TC)

I can see that the 'weapon of choice' among pro racing photographers is a 600mm+1.4x TC, but (A) I'm not a pro and (B) I'm a bit concerned whether I'd find the prime being less practical than a zoom. However, I see Eldar (and Edward too?) saying that they use their 600/4 much more than the 200-400/4.

For motorcycle racing the 1DX would be used, but for the wildlife the 5D3 also comes into play. Either case, both will only focus to f/8 at the center point.

The Tamron & Sigma 150-600mm end up with f/6.3, so I'll loose AF with an extender at the long end.

Are there other options I should consider? Manual focus is a no-go.

DXO tests the Tamron 85mm f/1.8 VC

https://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Tamron-SP-85mm-f-1.8-Canon-lens-review

Upside: it's the 5th sharpest lens available in the EF mount

Downside: apparently it's worse than the Nikon version yet again. ;D Apparently the vignetting was the reason (this time) that the Nikon got the higher overall score.

DXOMark: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II Tested

HTML:
The always polarizing DXOMark has completed their analysis of the new Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II lens.</p>
<p><strong>From DXOMark</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>If high sharpness is your only objective when buying a lens, then the scores achieved by the Canon EF 24-105mm F4L IS USM might be a little discouraging. Looking on the bright side, however, Canon has improved sharpness in the periphery at all focal lengths, even if that’s at the expense of some sharpness in the center. Whether that’s clearly better is open to debate, but in optical performance Canon can be praised for high transmission and for maintaining low levels of lateral chromatic aberration (fringing is lower than many high-grade primes).</p>
<p>Sure, we would have liked to see peak sharpness leap up, but then the price hasn’t sky-rocketed either. Optical performance is just one aspect of lens design, and this update still feels like more than just a step in the right direction. <a href="https://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-105mm-F4L-IS-II-USM-lens-review-Updating-a-classic">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>This seems to fall in line with what others have said about the lens. Is it worth the price to upgrade from version 1? Probably not. Is it a good option if you need the focal range? It is, though you can get the Sigma 24-105 f/4 OS Art for $200 less.</p>

Review: BenQ SW320 32” inch Adobe RGB Monitor

HTML:
Our friend and brilliant photographer <a href="http://www.jholko.com">Joshua Holko</a> has written a review of the BenQ SW320 32” inch Adobe RGB Monitor.</p>
<p>The importance of a monitor geared towards photography is often overlooked by budding professional photographers for whatever reasons. At $1399, this BenQ monitor seems to answer the performance call without breaking the bank.</p>
<p><strong>From Joshua</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>The BenQ SW320 is a superbly constructed high quality UHD wide gamut monitor that offers users exceptional resolution, colour accuracy and uniformity at a price point previously unheard of. The monitor is simple and easy to assemble and operated without issue out of the box with both my laptop and main desktop computers.</p>
<p>Overall picture quality is exceptional with excellent linearity and uniformity across the screen that matches the much more expensive Eizo CG-318 in all but the extreme corners. This is outstanding performance that photographers and other graphic artists will really appreciate in daily use. <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/reviews/review-benq-sw320-32-inch-adobe-rgb-monitor/">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>This monitor is available for preorder via B&H Photo, though a release date hasn’t been published by the retailer.</p>
