Vintage Digital Cameras

While cleaning in my studio, I discovered my Vintage Coolpix 990. I bought it right after they came out, around 2001. Unfortunately, the batteries in it had leaked, so it was a mess. The batteries had not reached their expiration date, so I sent off photos to the battery manufacturer. The batteries should not have leaked.

So, I have a small payment coming, enough to buy a replacement if I want. Its more of a nostalgia thing than a real loss. I spent a hour with q-tips and vinegar/water cleaning as much of the corrosion off as possible, some of it I had to scrape away. The battery door was the worst, the plating was eaten off the metal, so it will corrode again.

Now, it works once again, this time I put in some Eneloop Batteries. I've never had them corrode on me.

More Canon EOS 6D Specifications Talk [CR1]

HTML:
<p>There’s more Canon EOS 6D Mark II specification talk making it’s way around the web, most of it is what I would call expected.</p>
<p>First up, the camera will have DPAF and a fully functional touch and tilting LCD screen. This will be the first full frame Canon DSLR to get a tilt screen. The EOS 6D Mark II will NOT shoot 4K video, which will disappoint some, but I think most would expect it to be omitted.</p>
<p>A “new AF system” has also been mentioned, though the <a href="http://www.canonwatch.com/canon-eos-6d-mark-ii-to-feature-dual-pixel-auto-focus-dpaf-cw4/">original source</a> for the AF system rumor doesn’t know how many AF points it will have. The expected number has been 19, but we cannot confirm it.</p>
<ul>
<li>24MP or 25MP sensor (Difference between effective and actual?)</li>
<li>Dual Pixel AF</li>
<li>Dual SD card slots</li>
<li>NO 4K</li>
<li>Fully functional touch screen</li>
<li>Tilting LCD</li>
<li>New AF system</li>
<li>NFC</li>
<li>Wifi</li>
<li>GPS</li>
<li>Slightly smaller and lighter</li>
<li>Announcement expected Q1 2017 (We’ve been told it’s possible the camera will come in Q2 of 2017)</li>
</ul>
<p>The rumor mill post Photokina has been pretty quiet and what has come in has been contradictory. As such, this usually tells us nothing is on the imminent horizon and most things will be vague.</p>

New Rebel DSLR Coming for CES in January [CR2]

HTML:
<p>The next DSLR from Canon will apparently be a Rebel (or two) for CES in January of 2017. Canon generally announces consumer DSLRs and PowerShot cameras for the show in Las Vegas.</p>
<p>The source told us that there is some talk internally about the camera(s) coming with a new type of viewfinder for a Canon DSLR.</p>
<p>We don’t know if the Rebel T6 series is being replaces, or if the Rebel SL1 is going to finally see a direct replacement.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Canon Inc. to Sell Sensors to Third Parties

HTML:
As <a href="https://image-sensors-world.blogspot.ca/2016/08/canon-to-start-selling-its-cmos-sensors.html">reported back in August</a>, Canon is going to be selling sensors for OEM use. It’ll be interesting to see who is the first to use the 120mp CMOS sensor.</p>
<p>Keep in mind these image sensors will likely be used for something other than still cameras, and could appear in things like cars, robots and other pieces of technology.</p>
<p>View the gallery below for the tech specs of chips that will be available.</p>

Tamron 150-600 V2 and the Tap-in console

The task is to AFMA the V2 Tamron 150-600 with the Tap-in console. The software used for AFMA is Reikan Focal. So far so good......

The Tap-in console allows one to enter AFMA values for the lens at various distances and focal lengths. The recommended distances are 2.2metres (minimum focal distance), 20 metres, and infinity (I picked 100 meters).
At each distance, you run an AFMA test at 150, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600mm focal length (18 Focal AFMA runs in total), enter the values into the Tap-in software, program your lens, and you are done....

I had no problems with the runs at 20 meters, but the target was too large for the minimum focal distance runs and too small for the "infinity" runs. I tried printing the target out smaller, but I ended up having to print it at 25% size and the quality through my printer is pretty bad when shrunk that far (but Focal ran!)..... I also tried to print it larger for the "infinity" runs, but it was only good for 500 and 600mm and would not work for the wider settings.

any ideas out there?

Anything shot with eos 80D

I'm trying to develop a relationship with the 80D. We're off to a shaky start, as my first one had what seems to have been faulty AI Servo AF. These sample shots were taken for the most part in One Shot, which was better than Servo, but still not up to the performance of my 60D or 20D.

(I'm waiting for a new 80D; should have it within a few days.)

Lately CR members seem to be down on the xxD series. Why else no image gallery for the 80D until now? If the camera performs as designed, according to the impressive specs, it should be a great alternative to the slightly smaller but less capable mirrorless offerings from Olympus and Fuji.

A big thanks to CR member Dustin Abbott for many good reviews, including the video version for the 80D. It's here if you haven't seen it yet:
I can say that ergonomically it is a true delight. When I get my new copy, I'll definitely be back with more images.

Now lets see other members' shots!

Any oil spatter on the 1DX mkll?

How is it looking on the 1DX mkll? Does it have the oil spatter issue that seemingly plagued the 1DX?
I am considering buying one of these but will not invest that kind of money in a camera that has a flaw such as this. I am too heavily invested in Canon to consider switching systems should the oil issue continue, but am intrigued by the fact that I can find no trace of oil issues with Nikon's D5 when googling around, yes I am aware of the serious issues Nikon have had in what is possibly the past.....ie, they appear to have solved it.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

DPR Landscape Photography Awards announced

Not bad work on display here. I need to up my game. ;)

https://www.dpreview.com/news/1515307818/announcing-the-winners-of-usa-landscape-photographer-of-the-year-2016

As a fun side note, not a single one of the 16 award winning shots was taken with a 5DS or 5DS R. The award winning shots came from 14 different cameras, including a fun levitating shot taken on a T3i (!) of all things.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II Not Coming Until Spring? [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that the release of the Canon EOS 6D Mark II will not happen until the spring of 2017 at the earliest. We had previously been told to expect an announcement some time in Q1 of 2017.</p>
<p>The same source says the new camera will have some new technology in it, have a 25mp sensor, dual SD card slots, a slightly smaller form factor and a reduction in weight.</p>
<p>This feels like it’s possible, as we haven’t heard anything we’d call definitive yet. We don’t expect an abundance of information to come about until the new year.</p>

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II Delayed Until December

HTML:
<strong>Update

</strong>We’re told that the delay is only for the retail version of the lens. The 5D4 kits will ship on time. You’ll likely be able to buy a “white box” copy of the lens if you don’t want to wait.</p>
<p><strong>Original Post

</strong>After some investigation, a report at TDP suggest that the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II will be delayed until December. The lens was expected to arrive this week, but all indications suggest that will not be happening.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1274709-REG/canon_ef_24_105mm_f_4l_is.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296">B&H Photo</a> now lists the lens as available on December 10, 2016 and <a href="http://amzn.to/2fmjCj1">Amazon</a> shows December 6, 2016 ship date.</p>
<p>While the brilliant EF 16-35mm f/2.8L IS III shipped early, it looks like lightning won’t strike twice.</p>
