I waited a long time for the R5 MkII, bought the R5 instead

As a long-time 5Ds user I was eagerly awaiting the R5 MkII, hoping that (among other possible improvements) it would have a higher resolution sensor.
I'm an advertising and portrait photographer and mostly work in the studio using strobes so I don't need ANY of the improvements that the MkII has brought.
Even the image quality isn't better with the new sensor, so when the MkII finally arrived, I bought the original R5 new at a discounted price of just €2,400 (the MkII sells for €4,500 in my country) so I saved a lot of money. :)

Have any of you done the same?

PS
Yes, I need high resolution! My files are often cropped to death by my clients - they want a portrait crop from a full figure shot, etc.
The R5 MkII at its current price didn't made any sense in my case - the 100MP FUJIFILM GFX 100S II isn't that much more expensive.
I'm even toying with the idea of buying one instead of renting, the only problem is that I have too much Canon glass...

R5 Mk2: when and how metering is taken

This is a question specific to the R5 Mk2 that has one (probably two) new capabilities that other Rx do not have.

Let's start with the easiest to answer.

WHEN IS METERING LOCKED?

  • ONE SHOT
    • EVALUATIVE: when focus is achieved
    • SPOT: when shot is taken (unless this is overriden in "AE lock meter. mode after focus " (this was introduced with R6 MK2 so is present also in R5Mk2 but probably not in R5 and R3)
  • SERVO
    • ALL: when shot is taken
Now to the hard one.

WHERE IS METERING TAKEN?

  • EVALUATIVE: Canon says it considers the whole scene but most say tehre's a bias towards the points on focus. I have no idea where the truth is but on R5Mk2 Canon has introduced "Detect priority AE while AF " valid only for EVALUATIVE: when on, metering is based on subject in focus, whe off, on the entire screen. So what does this really mean? If "Detect priority AE while AF" is ON is the metering taken considering the whole scene but with bias on subject in focus OR it means that metering is taken only on subject. In addition Canon says that "metering is also based on the entire screen when Subject to detect is set to None". Funny thing is that if Subject to detect is set to none, it is still possible to turn "Detect priority AE while AF" on or off, this means that we have the following combinations, for which it is not clear at all where metering is taken:
    • EVALUATIVE + "Detect priority AE while AF" ON + "Subject to detect" ON
    • EVALUATIVE + "Detect priority AE while AF" ON + "Subject to detect" OFF
    • EVALUATIVE + "Detect priority AE while AF" OFF + "Subject to detect" OFF
  • SPOT: at the center. This means that if you are in SPOT and you are tracking a subject (regardless of the AF area chosen), if you put center spot on subject and lock focus and meter, the metering is taken on the subject, but if the subject moves off-center the focusing follows the subject but the metering changes because it is taken always at the center.

The next allocation of Canon EOS R5 Mark II is hitting retailers

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II has been a frustrating launch when it comes to stock levels for both customers and retailers. There are still some long preorder lists in various countries around the globe, and the communication from Canon has been less than stellar for a lot of people. We also all saw the news that ‘new' EOS R5 Mark II orders could take more than 6 months to arrive. Canon publically stated that the issue(s) are with the supply chain, but they didn't articulate on that point. By the looks of it, Canon has removed the supply chain

Retro Review: Canon EOS 10D

Gordon Laing from CameraLabs recently reviewed the Canon EOS 10D as part of his retro review series. I usually enjoy reading Gordon's reviews and this one was no different.

R7 strange lockup issue when reviewing images

Greetings,

Has anyone else encountered an issue during image review in which the camera freezes, LCD remains black and activity light stays illuminated? I could not clear this by turning camera off/on, but had to unmount/remount lens and adapter to get the camera to respond. Then pressing image play button again, it would show me one or two, then go to a black screen with a ? displayed and "unable to view image" message. I was unable to successfully clear this glitch, tried removal/replace battery, remove/replace SD cards or by removing/replacing lens. The camera as configured when this happened:

Lens: EF 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L (version 1) with EF-RF adapter (control ring version)
SD Cards: Sony Tough M UHS II 128 gb V60. Camera set to record stills to card 1 and video to card 2. Cards were formatted to camera prior to first use
Camera: purchased new (USA warranty) from Amazon in July. Registered camera with Canon USA website
FW: shipped with v1.3.1 and successfully updated to v1.5.0
Battery: Canon battery shipped with camera, 3 bars power remaining

I had successfully viewed these images numerous times before today with the same components shown above, then after some days of the camera resting and turned off, I turned it on and experienced this issue when pressing image play button. During this time the camera has been stored indoors in a climate controlled environment, no shocks, bumps or vibrations.

The images were not terribly important so I formatted both cards again, and this time assigned camera to write to both cards, just to see if anything changes going forward for better or worse.

I've used numerous Canon digital cameras going back to the Digital Rebel, 20D, 50D, 60D, 80D and 6D Mk II and this is the first time I've had any of the issues I'm experiencing with the R7.

Thanks for your time and insight.

Canon officially launches the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM

A nice surprise for the people looking for an “affordable” constant aperture standard zoom, as Canon will officially be announcing the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM tonight at midnight EDT. One of the big knocks on the RF lineup is the lack of good and affordable lenses. Here we'll have the first constant aperture non-L

WiFi transfer

Question: My 5Dm4 had terrible transfers.... Now my R5m2 is the same. 1-2 megabytes per second via the proprietary iOS Canon Connect app.
WiFi 6e provides much better speeds. My iPhone 15 Pro Max supports it both on paper and in real life where my Canon device support the
standard on paper only:
Wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11ax 2×2 MIMO) (6 GHz22 / 5 GHz / 2.4 GHz)23, with Bluetooth 5.3 support

Am I missing something? Please share your experience.

Eye Control AF: help required.

Hi happy R5 II owners!
I have an issue with mine, certainly not the camera's fault, but mine...
I did carefully calibrate the Eye Control AF, several times, it precisely follows eye direction.
Yet, despite having registered calibration, and having set EC AF on "on", the camera doesn't focus where the pointer is located, but in the usual central manner. This means the EC AF has no real function. I've tried spot, extended, full frame AF, nothing helps.
What do I miss?
Thanks for any suggestion!

Canon R5 Mark II - Shutter Release Half-Press Not Working

Already factory-reset multiple times, but in vain.

Whenever I half-press the shutter release, it takes pictures directly. I have a battery grip, and the behavior is the same with the vertical button. It seems not the problem of the shutter release, but either something in the firmware or hardware.

I purchased two R5 Mark II at the same time. The other one works just fine with exactly the same settings copied.

Anyone else has the same issue?

First Powder-Compressed all-Sapphire (Aluminum Oxide) Glass Lens Now Works Great!

Just thought I would let you all know, I just finished this week as part of a corporate research and development programme, a set of all-Sapphire Glass 18mm, 24mm, 35mm, 55 mm and 85 mm, T1.5 Prime Cinema Lenses where all lens elements are made from Aluminum Oxide Powder compressed into the proper shape, then baked under high pressures and then automatically CNC-ground and polished to exacting specifications and uses A.I.-assisted Synthetic Vision and Laser Interferometry-based Quality Assurance (QA) without human intervention. This uses a manufacturing process that makes a type of Corundum which is optically pure, has a high refractive index that gathers more light per pixel AND is utterly scratch resistant and also heat-proof where the glass withstands up to 2030 Degrees Celcius (3686F!).

We took a set of vintage Contax Zeiss Cinema Lens designs and scaled-them-up to Full Frame at various focal lengths and they work GREAT! We actually TESTED the lenses to a full T1.5 which means they are is TRULY SHARP open full wide with NO softness on the corners, so there is no need to stop down to T2 or T4. This makes for a FANTASTIC super-low-light, night-time street photography or astro-photography lenses. What our parent company is doing (i.e. NCA - North Canadian Aerospace) is to create an INEXPENSIVE manufacturing method for Sapphire Windows and Curved Lenses of up to ANY SIZE including multiple-metres by multiple-metres in size that can be made for only about 30% more in cost versus Flat Soda Lime Glass.

Glass Powder Compression is a NEWISH method (i.e. circa Year 2000) for glass lens production but is ONLY NOW being applied to high-purity Aluminum Oxide powder grades. This means Sapphire Glass and Sapphire Lenses will drop in price by a 10-fold factor which ALSO MEANS more consumers will get a tougher and more scratch-proof glass than even Gorilla Glass. Pretty soon ALL your smartwatches, smartphones, tablets and many laptops and Computer Displays and Big Screen Televisions will have all-Sapphire Glass screens that offer incredible scratch resistance. Automotive, Marine/Submersible and Aerospace Applications with MANY clients are currently being negotiated.

The KEY points being made in this post is that very suddenly in 3rd Quarter 2024, many Glass Lenses and Flat Glass Surfaces will be moving over to mass-produced Powder Compressed Sapphire that give SUPER-TOUGH (i.e. withstands enormous Pressure and Heat!) and high scratch resistance (i.e. second in hardness only to Diamond!) that is CHEAP to make! (i.e. only 30% more than Soda Lime Flat Glass!)

Now You Know!

R5 Mark II - AE for Priority Subjects During AF

With R5 Mk2 Canon introduced a new setting:

AE for Priority Subjects During AF

also known as

Detect Priority AE while AF

If this is ON only fir EVALUATIVE the metering is based on the AF point or AF area where the subject was detected.

How does this differ from what we all actually know: in EVALUATIVE metering is based on whole screen but weighted on the AF point?

If this is OFF, metering is based on the entire screen.

I don't get it...

Canon R5 Memory Card Door Creaking

Hey everyone,

Hoping someone can help. Ive just picked up a Canon R5 and the memory card door is creaking and driving me insane as everytime I pick it up it makes the noise you can feel the door move slightly.

Its exactly as in the video below.

Has anyone had the same issue and does anyone have a fix?

Cheers

Kolari offering clip-in Canon OEM hot mirror

I had my EOS M6 converted to full spectrum by Kolari a few months ago. I have wondered what they do with the hot mirrors (IR/UV cut filters) that they remove from cameras during the process. Apparently, they are now mounting Canon R-series camera hot mirrors in a magnetic clip-in holder for the RF mount and selling them. Pretty cool solution – if you're willing to part with an extra $200 when you have your R-series camera converted (or now, if you've already had it done), you can get an OEM filter back to use your camera as if it were never converted in the first place. Kolari has offered (and still does) a Hot Mirror filter that is a close spectral match to the OEM version, but this is the real thing.

Here's the LINK (select OEM filter from the drop down menu).

Adapting lenses to the R52 (or any R system camera)....any experiences yet?

Hi all,
When they get back in stock...I'm likely to pull the trigger and finally replace my old, dearly beloved 5D3 (I'll find some use for it, maybe dedicated for scanning MF film).....with a new R52.

I have a good bit of EF glass I can use on it immediately, with the canon adapter.

BUT...in the last years, I've expanded out having a lot of fun with new and vintage lenses...many using the Leica M, or the old M42 and other mounts.

I find it a blast so far adapting mirrorless cameras I've played with (Leican and Fuji GFX) to vintage lenses which are giving me some looks I just really enjoy. Yes, I actually like images these days that aren't "clinically" perfect in every way.

I've not touched a copy of the R5 or R52....but I've heard they have a pretty good focus assist for manual lenses.

Can anyone give me some feedback on your experiences adapting lenses to the R system cameras?

One very recent article I read was about an upcoming Autofocus adapter for the R camera system for M lenses:

Megadap Leica M to Canon RF

I've seen videos of this company's version of this on Nikon cameras, like the Zf....and you basically set your lens to infinity and the adapter works with the autofocus of the camera which what appears to be good results.

Anyway, I know it's likely VERY weird to hear someone excited about getting the latest in camera body tech and wanting to throw on lenses from the 30's -> 60's on the front of it.

Hoping I'm not the only one tho....anyone else adapting lenses to the R system cameras?

Any images you could post?

Thoughts and experiences?

Thank you in advance,

cayenne

So How Good is the Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary?

This lens makes the Canon APS-C RF system relevant, at least to me. While this lens does rely on optical corrections, it's compact and constant aperture fast ultra-wide zoom. This is something we may never see from Canon for their crop system lineup.
