The 5D IV is so Yesterday

Now that the 5DIV is out, it's time to start arguing about the next release/releases from Canon.

What body/bodies do you want to see released? When do you predict that will happen? What lenses? When?

It seems to me the most likely bodies coming up (in order of release) would be one or two new Rebels, a 6DII, a 7DII and a 5Ds/r II, with maybe a new SL2 thrown in somewhere. As far as lenses, I have no idea.

I think we will see some Rebels in the first quarter of 2017 (kind of a no-brainer there, I know) and likely a 6DII in the first or maybe second quarter of 2017. I'd love to see an SL2 sometime next year, just because I would hate to see Canon abandon the line, as I believe it still has a lot of appeal to those who want a light, small reflex mirror camera. I believe that with the new sensor technology, Canon may update the 5Ds and 7D lines sooner, rather than later, but that could still be 2018.

I'll go out on a limb and make a prediction for the SL2 that is based more on "want" rather than logic: An upscale version with the 80D 24 mp sensor, at least 19 pt (hopefully more) autofocus (all cross-type and multiple f8 points), 7 fps, weathersealing sufficient for hiking and camping, wifi, gps.

What do others think?

Tether Tools Case Air Wireless Tethering System

I just saw the Tether Tools Case Air Wireless Tethering System (https://www.tethertools.com/product/case-air-wireless-tethering-system/) was announced as a pre-order item, available 11/1 for $160. I was just recently thinking about purchasing a CamRanger, which rings in at $300, so this looks like a great deal. I realize that since it's still only available for pre-order so nobody will have any real world experience with them, but I was curious about what others around here might think about it. Based on the limited information available, it looks almost identical in functionality to the CamRanger.

Worth picking up a 5DsR, or waiting?

Currently my main camera is a 1Dx2. I also own a 5d3 but I will be selling it soon as there's really no reason to use it over the 1Dx2 except as an occasional backup camera. For similar reasons I will not be buying a 5D4. The extra 10MP doesn't really justify it.

I really like the 1Dx2 and in particular I've found the extra dynamic range to be very useful. Sure, I've always been in the camp of getting the lighting right, but now that I do have the extra DR I've found it does help provide an extra 'pop' to photos.

I have no desire to replace my 1Dx2, but I would like to pair it with a body with more MP. The possibilities I've thought of include.
- a7r2. I've already ruled this out because when I need a backup camera, it's for wildlife. I need a camera that works well with my 200-400/1.4x. I also need a camera that works with my MP-E 65.
- Fuji MF. Thought I'd mention it in case someone brings it up. I find this intriguing, but I have no desire to carry yet another system of heavy lenses.
- 5DsR. This hits all the buttons and I liked the crop mode - where I can basically use the camera as a lower fps 7d2.
- 5DsR II - basically wait for this to come out. My assumption is it will be a lot like the current camera, but with their latest sensor tech. Anything else they do to it is gravy. While I wait, for cases where I absolutely need a backup camera, I'll just rent something.

I'm stuck between the last two. While the 5DsR is intriguing, I do worry about the DR - especially on such a high MP body. Note that I am not worried about high ISO at all. I've owned a 7d2 in the past so I'm aware what its capabilities are. However, this camera will only live on a tripod. It will be only intended for specialist cases when I have some grand landscape scene that I may potentially print large. For any time the camera is off the tripod I will use the 1Dx2.

If a 5DsR existed with the latest Canon sensor technologies, I would buy it instantly. However I'm really stuck in deciding whether the current body is worth it.

Live View Shooting with 5D Mk IV: Astonishingly slow

After solving the Live view shooting problem By cheating using a Yongnuo 622 trigger simulating an Canon TTL flash I tried to shoot with the Canon Connect Software. This is slow. Very slow.

I can compare this with the Panasonic image app which is working just fine. Also the transfer of the image is rather fast there.

But here: you have the feeling the handshake is handled with drums....

Tips for back button set up

I came across this video on YouTube yesterday, about setting up customizable buttons on the 5DIV. I don't think he gives the best advice on the actual set up, but he shows possibilities I was unaware of - that you can make detail customization to the chosen AF mode. It works the same way in the 5Ds/r. To me, the button customization possibilities he demonstrates are fantastic.

Problems using CF Cards on 5Dmk4: Solved

HI, hit a small problem yesterday evening with the 5Dmk4. Put the CF card in my computer card reader and
it was not recognized, LR was in a bad way, and the disk drive did not show up in explorer. Multiple attempts, reboots etc. no joy. If I go into Computer management, then the process is hung like in the attached screenshot.
Put the card back in the Camera, it was usable, took some more shots. Put CF card back in the PC, same problem.
Connected the 5D via USB, could transfer the images OK to the PC.

The card had been used in my 7Dmk2 up till now, and this was the first time it had been in the 5Dmk4.

Strange behaviour, and I can't get to a a windows checkdisk to see if has an obvious fault.

There was IIRC at one time a recommendation to format the cards in the Camera, is that still valid?
I have never needed to do that up till now.

Anyway just a heads up in case your CF is not recognised by WIndows some time in the future.

Cheers Brian

Involuntary Upgrade

My 5D4 order arrived this evening, and as I was setting up the camera I was puzzled about how to get the touchscreen to work. When I got to the file size setting something seemed really weird...my top RAW setting said 50M. I turned the camera around and realized it has no touchscreen because it's a 5DSR...in a 5D4 box!

Manuals and everything say 5D Mark IV. And it was from Amazon, not some shady overseas or East Coast seller. It appears it's a Canon mistake...nothing was opened, looked brand new. It's also got an odd serial number: 022021000222. Go figure.

New Firmware Coming Shortly for EOS 5D Mark IV? [CR1]

HTML:
We’re told that we may see a firmware update for the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV as early as mid to late next week.</p>
<p>While we weren’t told what would be included in the firmware, we think it’ll likely be for bug fixes, and won’t be adding any new significant features.</p>

Any mention of 600 f/4 DO at Photokina?

Did anyone hear anything or attend Photokina and ask Canon about this lens? Did they have the prototype on display again? It's been a year since Canon showed the prototype and design concept at PhotoExpo. I was hoping they would have it on display again to at least give us hope that it is still being developed. An actual production announcement would have been even better but that obviously hasn't happened.

Favorite Camera/Lens Combination for the Beach?

Summer is waning in the north and my mind is drifting to planning a getaway to someplace warm and beachy to escape the snow and ice.

What's your Favorite body and lens combination for taking to the beach? I'll start.

I like my 1Ds Mk II with the 17-40L

Why?
It impresses the locals who would recognize 10 year old technology
Even with 12-bit raw & only 16MP it still takes nice images
With a filter it is weather-sealed
It's not too much to lose if stolen or broken

And, if someone does try to mug you you can beat them to death with it and still take a picture of their lifeless body

5D4 vs 1Dx -Body durability and related questions

Dear Colleagues: I am considering the 5D4 (I have 1Dx and 5D3 and very happy with both). I do stills almost exclusively; video is less important to me. I shoot in very unfriendly environments; outdoors a lot, dust, smoke, dirt, etc. Low light is important, but 14 FPS is probably less so. My question: does anyone (lensrentals, please feel free to chime in!) have any info or thoughts on whether the 1Dx is appreciably more durable than the 5D4? Yes, the 1Dx is a tank, but what makes it tank-like above and beyond the 5D4 (or 3, for that matter?) Do I need to carry the extra weight of 'the tank' for any appreciable increment in durability, resistance to inhospitable environments, etc? Any wisdom, greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

The Best of Photokina 2016, and a Few Things That Make You Go Hmmmm

HTML:
We didn’t head to Photokina this year for a host of reasons, but we definitely paid attention to what was going on. It looks like it has been a great show with a lot of great announcements.</p>
<p>I figured I’d rank the best things we saw at Photokina, and a few things we’ll have to wait and see on. Keep in mind, beyond the EOS 5D Mark IV, we haven’t actually had our hands on any of the gear announced in Cologne.</p>
<p>You can see all the Photokina items for preorder <a href="https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/items/ci/32624/ipp/60/N/3614572237/view/GRID/bi/2466/kbid/3296">over at B&H Photo</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Top Announcements at Photokina</strong></p>
<p><strong>Fujifilm GFX 50S</strong></p>
<p>I’m so happy that the rumors of Fujifilm medium format system has turned out to be true. What excites me more is that it’s likely to come in at under $10,000 USD including a prime lens.</p>
<p>I think the sub $10,000 medium format segment is potentially bigger than some people thing and that they’re going to sell a lot of cameras. What’s most important is that Fuji must get the lenses for the system out to the market as quickly as possible, when people don’t have lens options, they tend to look elsewhere. Fuji can make great lenses, so I’m not worried about the quality of the optics.</p>
<p>The Leica S has always been my favorite “medium format” body, but I’m staying away from the system until we see a 50mp or higher sensor (I’d love to see 80mp). The lenses are absolutely stellar, as are the ergonomics of the camera, but I just can’t justify the cost for the resolution.</p>
<p>I think the GFX 50S will pass the Pentax 645 system in popularity fairly quickly.</p>
<p>Well done Fujifilm, there’s a chance you’re going to take my money.</p>
<p><strong>Canon EOS 5D Mark IV</strong></p>
<p>I count this as a Photokina announcement, and I was so impressed they were able to get it to the masses so quickly. This is obviously the only product on this list I’ve had the chance to play with, and I think it’s a great step forward for the 5D line.</p>
<p>When you release a replacement for the most popular full frame camera in the world, you’re going to get a ton of criticism along with praise. Most of the criticism has come from the videographer world, while I respect their opinions. The majority of buyers for the EOS 5D Mark IV will be using the camera for still photography, just like the previous iterations. We did some unscientific market research at Lens Rentals Canada, and more that 95% of the people that rented the 5D Mark III, did so for still photography.</p>
<p>This camera is going to be a workhorse for professionals the world over for many years to come.</p>
<p>Well done Canon, you already took my money.</p>
<p><strong>Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG Art</strong></p>
<p>It’s finally here! It seems the entire photography community has been waiting for the 85mm f/1.4 Art and the excitement for the announcement has been over the top.</p>
<p>Sigma is promising that this lens will equal the Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 in optical performance, and give you the benefit of autofocus for a fraction of the cost. If Sigma gets anywhere near this claim, they’re going to have themselves a massive success.</p>
<p>We’re hoping for a new Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L III some time in 2017, because it may be hard to resist this Sigma offering.</p>
<p><strong>Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III</strong></p>
<p>I had this preordered a week before it was announced, it’s by far the most anticipated product in my world. If this lens carries on the performance of Canon lenses released in the last couple of years, it’s going to become the best wide angle zoom in the world.</p>
<p>I’m hoping for better optical performance than the brilliant EF 16-35mm f/4L IS, with the added bonus of an extra stop of light for event photography.</p>
<p>I’ve found the EF 11-24mm f/4L to be too wide and too big for most of my uses, even though it is an amazing piece of glass.</p>
<p>I have a feeling a lot credit cards will be getting abused once this lens starts shipping.</p>
<p><strong>The Top Wait and See Announcements at Photokina</strong></p>
<p><strong>Sigma 500mm f/4 OS Sport</strong></p>
<p>The knock on Sigma has always been consistent autofocus performance. If there was a focal length where consistency is paramount, 500mm would be it. We’re hoping Sigma has improved in this area and that the brand new $6000 supertelephoto turns out to be a steal, considering the brilliant Canon equivalent is about 50% more expensive.</p>
<p>Tamron seems to have focused on AF accuracy over AF speed, and I’ve found their latest primes to be about as consistent as you can expect from a third party manufacturer. The slightly slower speed of the AF hasn’t bothered me for my shooting style.</p>
<p><strong>Canon EOS M5</strong></p>
<p>I had some initial excitement for this camera. It looks to be a lot better from a ergonomic standpoint as well as technologically. The 24.2mp sensor is a great APS-C sensor and DPAF is a remarkable technology.</p>
<p>My problem is they still haven’t addressed the lens issues with the EOS M system. This is a $1000 camera body, and as such, there should be some higher end fast primes available for it. I will never use an 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM, no matter how great it is.</p>
<p>I look forward to using the camera with an open mind and I hope we see new lenses announced in the first half of 2017 to compliment it.</p>
<p>You can sound off in the forum with your favorite products of 2016, I’m sure I have overlooked something!</p>

Canon wifi

How crappy is the wi fi in both the 5DIV and 6D?
I had it working for about 5 minutes a couple of times. Don't get me wrong, it's superb when it functions properly, but most of the time the camera says its connected, while the computer has no clue the camera is there. I've tried connecting via home wi fi network, and straight to the "camera" network. Does everyone else find this "feature" as inconsistent as I do?

Basic questions about shooting in low light

I'm very new to photography and am using a 5DM3 and a f2.8 lens. I'm trying to shoot some photos with low light indoors and outdoors in shutter priority mode. I choose a shutter around 1/1000 and an ISO around 800 and the photos are dark.

1. Is the right way to handle this to just boost my ISO to very high levels to get my shot, even with the potential of noise? Is there anything else I can try?
2. Is the only other way around boosting the ISO with a high shutter speed to use a flash or some studio lighting?
3. Does the same concept apply when shooting in aperature priority mode. With low light and at f2.8 indoors, the photo is dark. Is the only way to handle this to boost the ISO way high?

Thanks.
