SX60 Needed tweaks

Hey Gang,
Question, I gave my wife an SX-60 HS for Christmas 2015. While she prefers to stays in Green mode to photograph, and she kicks my butt with the zoom range. She fights to get the focus point in the right spot. I have tried to read the manual to see if there is an adjustment. I dont see anything. But can anyone offer any tips or tricks that I can share with her? We are soon to travel to the western mountains of NC to photograph elk. (Rut Season)

Some 1DX m2 video experience

I almost never shoot videos, but recently got some interest in that taking into account all video capabilities in recent cameras especially for high quality 4K.
If it is there why not to try using that ?

I was occasionally using video on Sony a7s and a7r2 , mostly HD which was good enough for me and because I did not want to waste disk space on my laptop for huge 4K video files. Never used my former 1Dx for video - it was just useless for that.

With 1Dx m2 situation has changed drastically.
Few days back did some tests with 1Dx m2 video and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of video both for HD and 4K. I like color rendering from 1DX m2 much better than from Sony a7S or a7r2. it just comes out almost perfect (just natural -as you see it with your eyes with no need for any post processing adjustments ).
1DX m2 4K MJPEG is using 4:2:2 format which is not available internally in other cameras. May be this also contributes to excellent quality and color rendering for 4K video.

On Sony there is always some color shift/cast in artificial light which is not very pleasant to eyes (in daylight it is better) and some post processing is always required to correct that.

1DX m2 4K videos was just amazing to my eyes, I could not believe that, the only problem is huge MJPEG files, this was discussed on the forums multiple times. But camera has ability to play video frame by frame and grab required frames directly in camera. After that huge MJPEG file is not required.
So to save space when storing video on my laptop I tested MJPEG conversion to H.264 and H.265 - input from CFAST card to video formats converter and then output to the required location on PC.

Conversion to H.264.allows to compress original MJPEG clip in average 4 times (e.g. 8Gm MJPEG is converted to 2Gb H.264). But this is still too big.

Conversion to H.265 gives very impressive results - almost 14:1 compression ratio. Original 8Gb MJPEG file converted to 554MB file size with the same quality as original file. So with that I have much less concerns about space consumed by videos on my laptop. So now I am happy to use 1DX m2 for 4K video clips and save results as H.265 file on my laptop, though it requires some time for conversions . Still did not find any fast standalone MJPEG to H.265 converter for Windows which could use exclusively NVIDIA GPU /CUDA for image format conversion process. There are some standalone converters for MAC that could be found on WEB but I do not know how good are they.
The other option could be use of dedicated conversion devices - I still need to check that, may be ATOMOS can do that quickly.

What is good for 1DX m2 (and probably for other Canon cameras) that for video the same picture profiles are being used as for JPEG shooting so each video frame is as good as JPEG when shooting stills.
I found that neutral picture style is almost perfect for most situations - it gives natural color rendering with no need for post processing. Possibly also thanks to very good in-camera Auto White balance.

For those who need to have color rendering that looks more close to S-Log - one could use one of the custom picture profiles which could be set to have minimal saturation and minimal contrast to have more room for adjustments in post processing. Also sharpness could be reduced to have more film look and muted noise when video done in low light.
In addition to that as 1DX m2 has better DR it is also possible to use (-1 or-2) EV adjustments to preserve highlights and then do required tone mapping (raise shadows and mid-tones) in post processing, this could provide better simulation of C-Log for 1DX m2.

One more thing which I like more in 1DX m2 for video compared to Sony that each video file has unique name compared to others , the same as for JPEG files whereas on Sony (A7S and A7r2) each video clip starts from 000 after erasing images on the card which is extremely inconvenient and as each time one needs to rename video files when importing them on PC.

Using 1Dx m2 camera LCD monitor is not good for doing videos so for that I use Sony CLM-FHD5 LCD HD 5 inch monitor attached to camera Hotshoe. It is very light and it is extremely convenient for videos, LiveView shooting and also quick AFMA lens checks. It has focus peak mode as well as false color mode to indicate level of illumination on different parts of the image which is also useful sometimes.

Hope that all above could be useful for other owners of 1Dx m2.

16-35/2.8 L (first version) issue

Hi everyone!
I've bought used 16-35 L and I have issue with it - the lower left corner of the images with that glass is very blurry, you can see the problem in attached pic.
All glass is in excellent condition, no scratches or anything like that, AF works fine.
Could it be some optical axis problems?
I'm going to take this lens to canon service anyway.

85mm 1.2

I've been doing outdoor adventure/landscape photography for the past 3 years but as it's getting harder and harder to keep it profitable I'm leaning towards doing portraits/shooting for my friend's bands etc.... with that in mind I've got a already good kit with my camera's being two 1dx's and a 5ds with a 24-70 2.8 ii, 14mm 2.8 ii, 24mm 1.4 ii, 35mm 1.4ii, 50mm 1.2, 70-200 2.8ii is

But I've been thinking about adding in a 85mm 1.2 to help with portraits and maybe pair it with my 35mm 1.4 ii or the 50m 1.2 so I was wondering to those of you who have it, how do you like it? is focusing still slow even with a 1dx? and do you guys think there might be a updated version coming out soon? and how's the sharpness compared to the 50mm or even the 70-200 2.8 is ii

Good iPhone cameras lead to better 'proper' cameras

Seriously. "Good iPhone cameras lead to better 'proper' cameras".

And yes just iPhone cameras, you can forget LG, Samsung, Huwaei, Zee and anything other smartphone manufacturer you may have heard of.

Must be true as I read it on DPReview.

I go to DPReview every Saturday morning as there is always going to be at least one article that is sure to crack me up (make me laugh). Live at the Apollo has nothing on DPR's comic genius.

Incidentally, if you do read this article grab a box of tissues (or a large bucket) first as it is really an advertorial masquerading as editorial and as such just oozes Apple Love. :P

5DMk4 vs GH4 vs A7RII 4K Video Quality Quick Review by Tony Northrup.

Dear friends,

I just came across Tony's quick review of the three cameras shooting video and i have to say that 5D Mk4 looks very sharp (it was about time) but, the noise is terrible (especially at ISO12800) compared to Panasonic and Sony! Can it be true? I personally think that something is wrong with the video because i've tested the GH4 myself last year and the video was awful above ISO3200; the same is true for Sony from ISO6400 onwards! My personal opinion is that, Tony is quite biased against 5D Mk4 (also watch his other video about DPRaw). I'm a witness myself about GH4 and i have to say that GH4 is nowhere as near as good at high ISO and that Sony A7Rii is only good at super 35 mode.

Please take a look and express your opinion freely.

Teardown: Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

HTML:
LensRentals.com didn’t take long doing a teardown of the brand new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. It looks like the new body shows some build quality improvements and should provide reliable performance in tough environments.</p>
<p><strong>From LensRentals.com</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Construction is at least as robust as the recent 5 series releases and better than the Canon 5DIII, which is as it should be. There’s a little more complexity with cables running hither and yon more than in previous Canon cameras, but that isn’t going to affect operations at all. It may make repairs a bit more difficult. And I’m, as I always am, disappointed to see HDMI and USB ports soldered onto the main PCB. They get torn off a fair amount on every camera that’s made this way (which is most cameras that aren’t dedicated for video). On the other hand, the main PCB replacement may not be much more expensive than a sub-board replacement. <a href="https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2016/09/lensrentals-canon-5d-mk-iv-teardown/">Read the full article</a></p></blockquote>

Support for large umbrella

This is a pretty simple one. When I attach my large 86" umbrella to my strobe head the weight makes it so that it will rotate the flash head on my stand. I have to tighten the flash head mount to the stand to be so tight. I feel like I am going to eventually break that.
I tried gaffer tape around where the screw will push into the stand but it just rips it as thought it isn't even there.
Any one out there have any solutions?

Where Are All The Sigma Art 85mm Rumors?

As we draw closer to Photokina and the current 85mm from Sigma being supposedly discontinued in production...where are all the rumors? This "white whale" has been speculated for years and this would likely be the year since Sigma is due for another full-frame release at Photokina.

The Tamron really let me down in terms of performance, so I'm really hoping Sigma steps up to the plate this month.

Canon Celebrates Significant Milestone With Production of 120 Million Interchangeable EF Lenses

HTML:
<strong>TOKYO, September 8, 2016</strong>—Canon Inc. today announced the achievement of a new lens-manufacturing milestone with the production on August 26, 2016, of the Company’s 120-millionth EF-series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras—an EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM telephoto zoom lens.</p>
<p>Production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (Autofocus) single-lens reflex film cameras began in 1987 at the Company’s Utsunomiya Plant. Over the years, EF lenses have gained support from a wide range of users and production has since expanded to a total of four manufacturing bases, including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.; and Oita Canon Inc. in southern Japan.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>EF lens production passed the 10-million-unit mark in 1995 and crossed the 50-million-unit threshold in 2009. In April 2014, the Company celebrated its first-in-the-world achievement of having manufactured 100 million EF lenses, and now, setting a new world record for the most interchangeable lenses produced, Canon manufactured its 120-millionth EF lens in August 2016. What’s more, Canon’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and compact-system cameras), which utilize EF lenses, have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 13 consecutive years since 2003.1</p>
<p>Canon’s proprietary EF lenses, launched in March 1987 along with the EOS SLR camera system, have continued to evolve since their introduction, leading the industry through the incorporation of a wide range of innovative technologies, including such world’s firsts as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, a multilayered diffractive optical (DO) element, and Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) anti-reflection technology. The Company’s extensive EF lens-series lineup currently comprises a total of 97 models,2 including EF Cinema Lenses for digital cinematography.3</p>
<p>Canon will continue refining its imaging technologies centered on its EF lens lineup, striving to cater to the varying needs of photographers—from first-time users to advanced amateurs and professionals—while contributing to expanding the photographic and video imaging culture.</p>

Three more reasons why Canon should update XF300/305

Camcorders serve a very specific need and can do things which a DLSR or cinema camera simply cannot do. Yes, the new XF15 sounds ok, but it does not meet all the needs I would want from a true camcorder.

Canon's XF300/305 is an amazing deal at the moment considering it comes with an L lens and has great specs, but it is big, quite heavy and really needs updating in every area.

I was just reading about Panasonic's two new camcorders the AG-UX180 and cheaper AG-UX90 and started salivating. They sound amazing, especially the AG-UX180. There's also the HC-X1 which Panasonic has just announced.

Panasonic's new 1″ 4K broadcast AG-UX180 premium camcorder features a Leica Dicomar f/2.8-4.5 20x optical zoom that goes from 24mm-480mm (equivalent). It has SDI and time code jacks, among many other things.

With new camcorders like this coming on the market very soon, I do hope Canon will update the XF 300/305.

You can read about the new Panasonics at News Shooter:
