First EOS 5D Mark IV Leak?

<strong>*UPDATE 2*</strong></p>
<p>The instagram post has been removed.</p>
<p>We’re also pretty confident that the lens on the camera is a <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/new-ef-24-105-f4l-is-replacement-coming-with-5d-mark-iv-cr3/">replacement for the EF 24-105 f/4L IS</a>.</p>
<p><strong>*UPDATE*</strong></p>
<p>Here’s the reported “leak” of the EOS 5D Mark IV as claimed by Levi Siver. I’m not sure about this one, as I think we’re still a bit early for the “official” leaks that we saw with the EOS 5D Mark III launch.</p>
<p>IA forum member pointed out the lens hood of the attached lens and that they couldn’t identify it. We do know the soon-to-be-announced EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III has a new lens hood, the EW-88D.</p>

5D4 outed on Instagram?

Sketchy/uncertain at best, but if someone is going to do something knuckle-headed and violate an NDA, I wouldn't be surprised if you told me it was a professional windsurfer on IG:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BF5OIMyMPC9/?taken-by=levi_siver

If indeed he was given a 5D4, he was given an NDA (or whoever was shooting him was). Someone's about to get sued.

EOS Mirrorless FF Like the Leica Q

I am evaluating a borrowed Leica Q and it has greatly impressed me. 28mm on FF works beautifully for my landscapes. 24mp is plenty if the noise is low at sane ISO levels. The controls are simple, well engineered (by photographers rater than engineers, I assume), and extremely well built.
It is intuitive in action. The viewfinder puts all the other mirrorless I've used to shame. I still don't use "live view" much, I'm old fashioned!

But I have a wonderful kit of Canon glass. I still use my EOS bodies for everything except landscapes.
So... I would be Canon's first customer for an EOS-xD Mirrorless that:
Uses all EF lenses
Two SD slots
Four "C" modes (The Q has four "Users" the take the place of "C" modes)
MSRP $3,500 with 50mm 1.4 standard

1st image is the lake at Bonneville Salt Flats with HDR in LR; 2nd handheld; 3rd is 12 secs at ISO160

Canon EOS new Picture Style

Hi there, after one year of on-field testing, I decided to share a custom made picture style that I consider a little improvement over the classic Technicolor's Cinestyle. It has about 1/3 of a stop less "reach" in the shadows, but it delivers higher midtone contrast (that I find very helpful for skintones) and a smoother highlights roll-off.
You can download this PS from here:

http://www.luciolepri.it/nwp/canon_eos_naiad_wine_picture_%20style.htm

If anyone wants to give it a try, I'd love to receive some feedbacks!

Venus Optics Laowa STF 105mm f/2 (T3.2) Reportage

Hi, everyone, Venus Optics approached me about reviewing their new Laowa Smooth Trans Focus 105mm f/2 (T3.2). I agreed, and I've had a copy in hand since last week. It is definitely a unique lens that can produce beautiful results, but it is also a somewhat challenging lens to use and one I would say is best suited for those already confident in using manual focus lenses...or for videographers.

I've got an image gallery going here if you want to take a look: http://bit.ly/1XYKumd

Here's a shot from it of the Zeiss Milvus 1.4/50mm that I'm about to release my review of.

ePhotozine review of 80D

After the thread "Review of the Worst Review of the 80D on the Internet" http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=30024.msg601167#msg601167, it's refreshing to read a very balanced review

A challenge, and how much is 'enough'.

So I've been reading the 1DX MkII vs 5DSR comments, the gorilla 1DX vs anything comments and I just wondered if, as discerning image makers and gear hounds, any of us have a clue on how much is enough.

I took this image yesterday evening, it was very dim and there is little contrast, much more of a challenge than the high contrast images we often see in 'tests'. For a pointer to the resolution capability that isn't obvious due to the lack of contrast in the scene, the feint white line below the branch is a cobweb.

So my challenge, can anybody guess the camera, lens and settings that make this very presentable 16"x24" print?

First image is the full edited image, second image is a screen grab of the image at 16" x 24" print size if you click on each to view full size you will be seeing the print as you would a 16"x24" print, don't look at the inline forum image it will be wrong.

Go on, have a guess.

Tamron Tap-in console brief hands on

Other day Tamron had put up a demo of all their lenses in my city as some part of promotion. There I got to try their new USB dock. Unluckily it was for Nikon mount and they didnt have canon one in stock. Here are my overall impression of the dock:
Likes:
1: Its quite small almost the size of a mount cap.
2: Ability to update the firmware and control parameters of lens(ability to reconfigure Focal limiter for macro)
3: Micro USB connector which means it easier to source cables(also dislike)
4: Being light weight its easy to carry in camera bag
5: Cheap- at 3000Rs(~45$) its a definite purchase anyone getting SP lenses
6: Software very easy to use.
Dislikes:
1: Software needs internet connection to work
2: Mounting dock to lens not smooth and it feels like turning a ratchet
3: Micro USB connector fragile and USB type -C might have been a better connector choice
4: quite quirky in terms of detecting the lens and which meant reconnecting dock couple of times before it finally worked.

Overall impressions of the Tamrons USB dock and Software are very positive and anyone thinking of getting Tamron's SP lenses right now getting USB dock along with it is a no brainer.

Skukuza Rest Camp in Kruger park

Hi everyone,

I will be going on a 3 day safari based at the Skukuza Rest Camp in Kruger National Park in mid-September.
It sits on the southern bank of the Sabie River (Crocodiles!!) and although I have my gear all planned out (see below), I just wanted to ask a couple of quick questions about the area, as I find that the members of CR are well travelled and I hope to gain some tips if any of you have been to; or are familiar with this location.
One of my main questions is, is it worth while carrying the 3rd body on the drives with either of the short range zooms in case of close up encounters? Are close encounters even to be expected?
Any other tips or advise (especially regarding birding) would be gratefully appreciated.
I’m so excited about this trip, I don’t want to miss the action due to poor planning/knowledge if at all possible.

Accidental Lens Release

In the past couple of weeks I've been experiencing something for the first time in decades of full-time shooting, the dreaded Accidental Lens Release. It's been happening at events with both gripped 5DIII & 7DII with 24-70 f/2.8II and 70-200 f/2.8isII respectably. No drops fortunately but have found the loose lens in my hand, detaching from the body. Yikes! I'm not aware of any change in technique. I just can't fathom how the release is getting bumped, but it obviously is.

Have others had this experience and had release buttons tightened at CPS?

Review of the Worst Review of the 80D on the Internet

As a Canon shooter that's stuck with a camera in my hands nearly every day of the week, I tend to giggle at reviews of Canon gear online. Reviews of cameras to me are always a mixed bag because you are reading the opinion of someone that isn't you and only but the best reviewers come to an unbiased conclusion. You're also reading the opinions of someone that usually thinks they know what they're talking about - such is the case here. Not to detract from this author's credibility, but he just seems unapologetically biased and lacking real work credibility in terms of field experience.

First of all, I don't review camera equipment professionally. However, I used to review actual cars and car parts professionally as an automotive journalist when I was on staff at one of North America's largest publishing companies for over 5 years and then as a freelance writer years after....so I know a thing or two about HOW you review something - this is not it.

http://www.thephoblographer.com/2016/06/04/review-canon-80d/

I would have stopped reading but I read these two "Cons" the author found and was suckered in:

  • Phase detection AF through the viewfinder is crap in low lit conditions though significantly better in Live View
[*]Image Quality starts to fall apart easily with just a bit of editing

Canon claims -3EV, so we'll just assume it's -2EV. That's still admirable from any camera and the author is quick to point out that the camera couldn't nail focus in low light even with the AF assist light used and then says "Nikon DSLRs would’ve handled this with ease." OK.......so he's the first person to claim the camera couldn't focus in low light and then doesn't tell us which lens he was using for this, but tells us at the beginning he only used the kit lens, Sigma 35mm Art and 85 for the review. These Sigma lenses aren't exactly known for their stellar AF performance - especially in low light - as I have experienced first hand their horrible inconsistencies on my own 5D3, 6D, and 7D2 when the light drops.(I own a 50A that I don't trust in many low light situations.) No statement that 'I tried other lenses to see if there was another reason this was happening' just a 'it doesn't work and Nikon is better...' Judging from the images in that particular sequence, that field of view looks like the 35 Art would on a crop sensor and the background fall off looks like f/1.4-1.8. But yeah, I guess the camera sucks and has nothing to do with the lenses that the whole camera world knows have AF problems.

Then, when it comes to discussing the file quality from the sensor, I don't think the author has anything positive to say. He kept this section very vanilla. He claims the files fall apart at 1600 ISO or whenever you start to edit them?! What on earth is he talking about? What camera is he normally using? He keeps referencing Fuji which are known to have some of the best APS-C sensors out there and they're not even THAT radically far apart from the 80D in any area!? I'm pretty certain the performance of the 80D sensor bests my 7D2 and I use it for professional work each month. The 7D2 RAW files don't fall apart when I edit and I comfortably shoot and deliver up to ISO 3200 for clients without batting an eye.

This is where I scratch my head at Canon detractors because I just have to wonder what the hell they do with a file when they're editing? Canon files haven't held me back from my 10+ year professional publishing career, images for professional sports teams, the occasional stingy bride and groom, etc. I'm beginning to just think that people forgot how to take images and rely on leaning on their RAW files to save them too much. Anytime I see these dramatic file recoveries I always ask "who the hell would even take that image to begin with?!?"

If I were a new user, I'd step away from that review with my browser open looking for alternatives to the 80D...because the author dances around his opinion that he finds the camera to be junk. Perhaps that was their goal. They didn't like the camera or Canon to begin with and was then assigned to review it.

It's certainly "hip" to bash and hate on Canon these days. I really don't understand why either. Perhaps hipsters and wannabe photographers are just jumping on the bandwagon and forgetting that there's much more to a camera system than pixelpeeping on files with absurd shadow recovery at 100 ISO. When I got into this game 10+ years ago, Canon was hands down the best. I've spent that time collecting the tools I need and want to complete my job, as have countless others photographers. In using other cameras on the market I've found plenty to like, love, and hate about them all. It's disappointing that this idea Canon suddenly began to suck has enveloped the better part of the photography community. DPReview practically salivates at an opportunity to write a carefully-worded review on new Canon products about dynamic range that is seemingly horrid in a 5DSR, but when a $6500 Nikon D5 can't match it, 'this step back in dynamic range is nothing to worry about' and 'pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!'

This review went on much longer than I was originally anticipating as a simple sharing of the link on Canon Rumors. But it's Saturday and I'm in an airport with nothing to do but think. Hopefully some of you enjoyed and find my stance at least moderately amusing.

Polaroid 600SE - The Goose

I've been searching for a good example of this for a few years and I just scored a mint 1996 600SE... it's only been used 3 times and then promptly put into it's box in the summer of 1996. It hasn't seen light of day since 1996 !!! It is in brand new condition and I got it for 30$ :D Delicious medium format film. I also unfortunately know Fujifilm has just recently discontinued the 100C packs so I am SOL for native new film in the coming years. I just bought as many packs as I could get my hands on and use between now and next year. The next step for the inevitable... I'm converting for use with a few different film backs. First off is the 120 back (already done), next is a instax back conversion and finally a 600 Impossible Project CB70 conversion.

Which leads me to this question here... anyone here have a CB70 or 72. I'd buy it or trade for this highly sought after unit. PM me if you have a working unit.

New Lens or new body

I am running into a dilemma. I am moving into a new phase of my life where photography could become a hobby only and no longer be a source of income.
I may do the paid thing here and there but not at all like I do now.
I have approximately 4k saved up and I have one more job before I slow down.
so here is my dilemma- I may not be able to purchase new equipment for 4-8 years. Do i purchase the new 16-35 2.8(sold my V2 and i miss it greatly)? Or do i purchase a new body most likely 5dm4(thinking about 1dxm2 but i dont think i would quite enjoy it as much since this will only be hobby)
Any insight? Is a loved lens important or tide myself over with the latest full frame to carry me on.

Maybe third option i could sell a 5dm2 and or 7dm2 to give my self a little bit extra wiggle room.

New member in our family

After having 2 girls, 8 & 5yrs, my wife and I thought we done with kids.....guess not. We just welcome new member to our family :)

Would like to share some photos with the world. It's a great time to have a camera around.

CR in Rwanda With The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II

HTML:
I’m currently in Rwanda doing gorilla trekking at Volcanoes National Park with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II. I’ve been trekking for the last three days and it has been amazing. We head to Uganda tomorrow to trek for chimpanzees, which will be far more challenging that the gorillas.</p>

<p>I’ll be travelling for another week or so, which means updates may come slow to the site. I highly recommend visiting Rwanda for the gorillas.</p>
