LEE Filters Introduces Very Hard and Medium Neutral-Density Graduated Flters to its Systems

HTML:
<strong>Press release:

</strong>Traditionally, neutral-density graduated filters have been available exclusively in hard and soft versions. However, because all neutral-density grads in the LEE Filters range are made by hand, it is possible to be extremely precise with the depth of the transition between the coated and clear sections of the filter. As a result, LEE Filters has the capabilities to manufacture ND grads in medium and very hard versions. In the past, these were available exclusively as custom-made filters for professional photographers. Now, however, they have been made available to all those who use the Seven5, 100mm and SW150 systems.</p>
<p>The medium and very hard grads not only expand a photographer’s creative options, they also allow for even more exact control when balancing lighter and darker areas of the frame. The very hard grad (available for the 100mm & SW150 systems) is perfect for seascapes that feature a completely flat horizon line, while the medium grad (available for the Seven5, 100mm and SW150 systems) is that perfect ‘in-between’ strength that is ideal for any scene in which an element of the composition – a mountain or a building, for example – protrudes into the sky.</p>
<p>Both ND grads are available in 0.3ND (1 stop), 0.45ND (1½ stops), 0.6ND (2 stops), 0.75ND (2½ stops), 0.9ND (3 stops) and 1.2ND (4 stops) strengths.</p>

Patent: Improved Image Stabilization

HTML:
A patent showing how Canon could improve image stabilization in the future has appeared. It looks like Canon is trying to add a second image stabilization group to lens construction to improve its performance.</p>
<p>Patent Publication No. 2015-203862 (Google Translated)</p>
<ul>
<li>Published 2015.11.16</li>
<li>Filing date 2014.4.16</li>
<li>Equipped with two vibration proof group</li>
<li>Shake detection, determine the amount of correction from the shooting information</li>
<li>Obtaining correction amounts of the two vibration proof group from the magnification ratio and the distance information of the lens</li>
</ul>
<p>Going by the translation, it looks like the second image stabilization group would activate depending on magnification ratio and distance information read by the camera. I would assume this would be of great benefit to longer zoom lenses and super telephoto lenses.</p>

CPS Membership

Renewal time for me again. This year, they cut costs by sending the packet by FedEx 2 day rather than overnight as in the past.

They also included a new membership card with a note warning you that they will be cutting costs and will not include a membership card in the future. This is exactly the same note and a identical card to the one from last year which I glanced at as I tossed it out. I do not have the previous packets, so I don't know how long this has been going on.

I wish that they did like Canon Canada and offered a discount on equipment to CPS members.

Sony A9 rumor: unlimited RAW buffer

We presumed a higher-than-enthusiast A-brand mirrorless model was in the works, but we presumed it would tout crazy battery life, be built for war, have a proper grip for heavier glass, compete on the AF front with SLRs, etc.

Instead, the first rumor we get has nothing to do with competing with the 1DX II or D5's specs that we would have expected. They are touting an endless buffer, of all things:

Original article can't be linked as it's from a competitive rumor site. ;)

Natonal Beer Day 4-7-2016 (USA)

I see lots of beer bottles and cans in photos, so it seems appropriate to ask members to post their photos of beer for National Beer Day. I'm not a big beer drinker, but I found three bottles out in my garage fridge, and along with my G1X II which is always at hand, I snapped three quick shots. My intent was not to capture stunning photos, just to kick off the session.

Basic Information on Lenses Coming in 2016 [CR2]

HTML:
We’ve been trying to get more information on lenses coming in 2016 and things are been relatively hard to come by. We’re now being told that the non-L 200-600 super zoom <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-to-release-super-telephoto-zoom-in-2016-cr2/" target="_blank">we’ve been talking about</a> is likely an early 2017 lens and will not be announced for Photokina in September as originally planned.</p>
<p>The only new L lens that we can confirm is coming is a replacement to the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II, which is a lens we’ve been told is “done” and will be announced some time this year. We were also told that the EF-S lineup would get some attention this year, and that the 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 and 17-55 f/2.8 will see updates and a lower price tag, though we can’t confirm this from good sources.</p>
<p>We’re also told there are multiple Canon lenses that will get “direct replacements”, and a few would “surprise you”. Though we haven’t been able to publish what those lenses would be.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

Hasselblad Launches an all New Medium Format Camera

HTML:
<strong>75 years at the forefront of imagery, Hasselblad continues to innovate</strong></p>
<div class="page" title="Page 1">
<div class="layoutArea">
<div class="column">
<p>Hasselblad began its journey when founder, Victor Hasselblad, refused to simply copy an aerial surveillance camera at the request of the Swedish government who asked him if he had the skills to produce a camera identical to one that had been captured. He famously said: ‘No, but I can make a better one’. The camera maker has once again, followed Victor’s philosophy and applied it to the award winning H medium format camera – launching the all new H6D.</p>
<p>Rather than an improvement on the existing medium format H Cameras, the H6D range has been completely rebuilt with new technical components and an all new electronic platform. The pioneering range retains the modularity appreciated by medium format enthusiasts along with iconic design elements and Swedish handmade quality for which Hasselblad is renowned.</p>
<p><strong>The H6D range introduces the H6D-100c with CMOS sensor, a 100MP option and the H6D-50c with a 50MP CMOS sensor.</strong> A wider range of shutter speeds from 60 minutes to 1/2000th of a second, increased ISO range and a faster shooting rate along with USB 3.0 Type-C connector that delivers exceptionally fast file transfer. The H lens range is fully compatible and, with the choice of a faster shutter speed, can be further leveraged than with previous ranges.</p>
<p>The H6D-100c brings 4K video capability to medium format. The high-definition rear touchscreen LCD delivers a pin sharp live view experience and Wi-Fi as standard, a HDMI connector, for external monitor connectivity, completes the tool set.</p>
<p>Built-in dual card slots allow enhanced media capability; a CFast slot allows for high-speed capture and an SD card slot enables maximum compatibility. The all new platform is capable of handling the largest file throughput with speed and ease using optimised algorithms for matchless quality les.</p>
<p>Hasselblad’s image processing software, Phocus, has been enhanced with the new 3.0 version delivering additional features that allow you to apply local adjustments in the image and a new graphical interface that improves work flow and user experience.</p>
<p><strong>Commenting on the launch Perry Oosting, Hasselblad CEO noted:</strong><em> “The launch of the H6D range is the beginning of a year of celebration for Hasselblad. It’s fitting that we have returned to our pinnacle medium format camera to showcase the innovation and passion that have been present in every one of our first 75 years. Our obsessive approach to optical quality and precision hand building in Sweden is at the heart of this camera.</em></p>
<p><em>We have retained the best and introduced the most relevant – delivering a medium format camera which we believe the Hasselblad user will fall in love with all over again.”</em></p>

Lomography is at it again...

FYI:
http://petapixel.com/2016/04/06/lomographys-new-lens-just-raised-190k-8-hours-kickstarter/

The money is rolling in to this kickstarter effort. I always wondered if the bigger KS projects have angel investors waiting in the wings to flood a kernel of cash to get good press going.

Not a fan of Lomography stuff in general, but this is the first lens with bokeh shape modifiers built-in to the design (that I've seen). You can do this with manual templates draped over the front element of any wider aperture lens, but this has decidedly less fiddle factor involved.

80D vs 6D ownership now over 2+ years

Hey All,

I made a post similar to this one in another 80D thread, but things have changed and I figure a new post is warranted! I have been looking for an upgrade from my T4i, which I have owned for about 16 months.

Stuff I want over the T4i:

1. A better viewfinder, (size and clarity, not coverage/magnification) (80D yes?, 6D yes - bigger than 80D?)
2. AFMA (80D yes, 6D yes)
3. Better ISO performance. At the low end, being able to recover more DR from shadows/highlights. At the high end, (above 1600 ISO), less noise. Otherwise I'm perfectly happy with the IQ of the 18 MP sensor. (80D yes low ISO DR, 6D yes high ISO noise)

What I love about the T4i (stuff 'unique' to it):

1. Articulating touch LCD (80D yes, 6D no)
2. 9-point all cross-type, decent coverage of frame. (80D yes, 6D no)

I shoot a little bit of everything, but stills only. Probably 40% landscape, 40% portrait/people photography, 20% nature/macro. Maybe I'll do video later... But not a consideration right now.

The fork in my road for a couple months now has been 80D (I rented a 70D for about a week last year, almost bought it. Liked it a lot) or take the FF plunge with a 6D. I have mostly EF-S lenses.

SO! I went to my local Best Buy to get the 80D (body only) last week, but the body only variant sold out the same morning it launched online (Now a week later they have removed the listing for it >:() I want to get it there because I have a no interest card that I could split the purchase over a few months. Lo and behold then, I bought a new 6D body for $1625 CAD.

I've been running around the house taking all kinds of pictures with it (it is still crap weather here) and the 50 1.8 STM and,

What I love about the 6D:

1. High ISO performance (80D yes? , 6D yes)
2. Big, sharp viewfinder (80D yes? , 6D yes)
2. Depth of field (80D no, 6D yes)
3. Smooth shutter button, no half-stop (80D yes? , 6D yes)
5. Wifi/phone sharing (80D yes, 6D yes)

What I miss on the 6D:

1. Articulating, touch LCD (80D yes, 6D no)
2. My EF-S lenses (mostly just having variety. Having one prime is OK, very limiting. 80D yes, 6D buy new lenses)
3. High sensitivity off-centre AF points (minor gripe, I do often focus-recompose even with my T4i - 80D yes, 6D no)

Mostly, I love the 6D. I just feel like it's silly to invest now in a camera body that's pushing 4 years old when it seems like based on same-ISO performance parity with the 6D, the 80D ticks even more boxes (minus the depth of field which is FF exclusive at same aperture). Whatever this next body is, I can't see myself selling it any time soon or needing a new body for a while. . That new on-chip ADC seems to really be upping the IQ out of the newest sensors, and I'd have my flippy LCD + lens variety back.

I have a week to decide on the 6D. Do you all think it's silly to buy a 6D this late in the life cycle with these new sensors coming out now?

Help me, CR!

Travel to Chicago in April

I am going to Chicago for a week in a couple of weeks time, staying near the Magnificent Mile area. I have at least one day at a conference, but the rest of the time is pretty much free. Any suggestions as to "must photograph"/"must see"/"must do"/"must eat at" places, gratefully received! I am embarrassed to say that at the age of 56 this is my first visit to Downtown Chicago...

Thanks

Richard

From 7D to 80D?

Hello CR world. Been reading this site for some time, only post infrequently. Thought I'd get some advice.

I currently have a 7D, and have been waiting for the right set of features to appear before upgrading. It looks like the 80D might be that camera, but would like some opinions. I shoot 90%+ wildflowers/landscapes. I have a 15-85, and 60mm that are my work horse lenses, and I have no interest in full frame, it is not necessary for the work I do.

My question is: Would I see a major increase in file quality going from the 7D to the 80D? The major draws are the articulating screen and the apparent low iso banding reduction.

Thanks

TS-E 17 for tilt on 5DsR?

I'm thinking of pulling the plug on a TS-E 17 mm for my 5DsR. Purpose: landscapes and environmental portraits of plants, so mainly tilt, not shift as in architecture. I am familiar with movements from doing 4x5 LF. My other lenses are mainly Zeiss primes, and I like to use the Zeiss 21 ZE a lot for that purpose. Possibly my third-most used lens after makroplanar 100 and MP-E 65. I have the Zeiss 15 and 25/2.

Given that I like the 21 a lot, I suspect that the TS-E 24 will be too narrow. The TS-E 17 has slightly lower IQ ratings compared to the TS-E 24. Cropping the 17 mm with 104 degrees to 24 mm angle of 84 degrees should only reduce the image size by about 20% linear (44% area/file size), and I assume that lens errors are more pronounced towards the periphery. Apparently, it is possible to use a 1.4xTC, but that sounds a bit scary. Ergo, given the file sizes of the 5DsR, cropping is an option. MF and checking focal plane position in live view with magnifier is just like LF.

Given my likings of Zeiss primes, will the TS-E 17 be disappointing? Is there anything special to consider when tilting the TS-E 17 on a 5DsR? Price-wise, it is only slightly more than an average Zeiss lens, quite a bit less than several others.

Thanks for any experiences you can share!

How wide for Antelope Canyon?

I have opted for both a photographer's tour, and a longer one later with the wife.
I'll be shooting with my 5DIII with tripod. I will be bringing my 16-35mm f/2.8L, I could rent the 11-24 or 8-15 fisheye? I've seen some samples of these, and am tempted to go with the fisheye, and swapping no more than once down there.
I am learning toward the fisheye and reusing it around the Horseshoe Bend, and grand canyon, and wherever else we wander.
Thoughts?

G9X: Can Users 'Eliminate' Hot Pixels?

My aging but still useful S95 works well in every way except it has a hot pixel. Whereas in Canon's dSLRs there are ways to 'eliminate' hot pixels, I have not been able to find a way to eliminate (in camera) S95 hot pixels.

I've downloaded the User Guide for the Canon G9X, in an effort to find out whether its in-camera capabilities include the ability to eliminate hot pixels.

I am unable to find any mention of this feature in the Canon G9X manual.

Any CR forum readers have any knowledge to bear on this one...?

I remain interested in the G9X and would be more interested in it to find that this feature does exist for this tiny 1" sensor camera.

Thanks.

Being published! Snake Nebula image in Sky & Telescope

I've been contacted by Sky & Telescope magazine a couple of times about publishing my images. They actually are publishing an image I processed (although I collaborated on it with another individual who acquired the data) in the May edition that should be hitting shelves soon. That is an image of Trifid Nebula.

I was just contacted again with a request to use my Snake Nebula image in their July 2016 publication:

66utD35.jpg

This image is 100% my own, I acquired the data last summer and processed it last summer. This image is of a part of our galaxy, where the dark dust that makes up part of the "dark river" spreads out over the golden starfield near the core region of the Milky Way.

Anyway. It's exciting to be published, especially after having only been doing astrophotography for such a short amount of time. For those interested in space, astronomy and astrophotography, keep an eye out for the July publication. I am not certain what article it will be, very interested in reading it. There is always the chance they may bounce me in favor of another image if they find one more appropriate, although I don't think that will happen.

More on the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV in 2016 [CR2]

HTML:
We’re getting new information about the EOS 5D Mark IV quite slowly, but a lot of it I believe to be reliable.</p>
<p>The latest is about how the camera is going to launch. We’ve confirmed that the EOS 5D Mark IV will be announced in late August/early September in time for Photokina, which begins on September 20, 2016 and runs through to September 25, 2016. The ship date for the camera should quickly follow if everything goes to plan. This sort of launch would mimic the way the EOS 5D Mark III was launched and released. We think there’s a good chance you’re going to have the EOS 5D Mark IV in your hands some time in October, 2016, if not sooner.</p>
<p>If you’re interested in the camera, start saving your pennies. We expect a launch price of about $3500 USD, which is identical to the EOS 5D Mark III at launch.</p>
<p>The only reliable specifications we’ve been told is that camera will shoot 4K, have built-in wifi and GPS and have some touchscreen functionality. A less reliable source has told us the camera will shoot to CFast, just like the EOS-1D X Mark II. We’re sure the camera will have dual slots, but we don’t know how the media will be configured.</p>
<p>We expect a lot of chatter around NAB this month in Las Vegas.</p>
