Interesting Canon Senor Shift IS Patent

Found on Egami via Photorumors:

http://photorumors.com/2016/03/13/the-latest-patents-from-sony-and-canon/

Appears to relate to using full frame lenses with sensor based IS to allow greater stabilisation on APS-C bodies. They're probably thinking of movie shooters shooting handheld in place of steady cam systems (sorry, I'm not a video users so I don't know the correct terminology for this).

Interesting that Canon appear to be considering sensor shift IS though, after all this time pushing lens based IS.

I compiled a 60D/70D/80D/7D2 feature comparison table

So, apparently (as a 60D shooter) I'm uncharacteristically excited by the upcoming 80D and have too much spare time. I compiled a table of most of the quantifiable differences between the 60D, 70D and 80D bodies. It is based on the official specification documents and should be near-exhaustive unlike the comparison tools found on various websites. Any errors and omissions should be my own, and feedback is gladly accepted.

EDIT: Now with even more features and a 7D2 column!

5DSR for wildlife in dawn & birding?

My 6D has an very good IQ, but the AF is to slow for my purposes. As I shoot a lot of animals in dawn, I´d like to buy a new FF body to raise the Iso (my 7DII shows really a lot of noise higher than ISO 1600). Used lenses: 600mm L II, 100-400mm II ( both lenses sometimes with 1.4x converter)

Would an 5DSR be a good choice for shooting animals in dawn? How fast is the AF?

I tried the Sony 7RII (phantastic IQ !!!), but I can´t choose an definitve AF Point ::) , so this is not practicable for wildlife photography. Waiting for an 5DIV? Or for the coming 80D (many f8-AF-points - with (heared from Canon) better high ISO than the 7DII)??

Thank for your help

Best pocket camera

Friends.
I lost my Sony RXIII. Now need a pocket camera for general family type of photography but one which will provide good IQ during emergencies where I will be without my DSLR.
I realise that this would have been discussed before but times change so asking.
Any recommendations? Pocket is key! The Sony was not.

Prosumer Level Canon Mirrorless Camera to Have 4K [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that “at least one of the three mirrorless cameras coming in 2016 will feature 4K video recording”, though the size of the image sensor was unknown.</p>
<p>We’ve heard from a few places that we’ll see a fixed lens mirroress camera along the lines of the Leica Q and Sony RX1 R, but we don’t know what the sensor size would be, one would hope it would be full frame. The other two mirrorless cameras would be a new APS-C model, as well as the introduction of a full frame model, which we assume would be the camera most likely to shoot 4K.</p>
<p>The current estimate on when such products would be announced is the end of August, in time for Photokina 2016 in Cologne, Germany.</p>

Yowza -- 28mm f/1.4L patent surfaces

I am not sure to file this under :-\ or ::) or :D

http://egami.blog.so-net.ne.jp/2016-03-11

If you believe there is little place for a 28mm prime and that 24 and 35 do enough for us, you are probably hoping this patent never materializes, and, say a non-L 50mm with IS materializes instead.

If you are an astro person -- fully recognizing 28 + 1.4 is far from perfect astro-wise -- you may still get a little excited that Canon might deliver the coma-free / fast / wide lens you've been waiting for.

If you love the 28mm focal length, enjoy your 28mm f/2.8 IS, or own the old 28mm f/1.8 USM and spoon with it at night like people did with their Amiga computers when they were discontinued, etc. you might be breathing into a paper bag right now.

Thoughts?

Carnivores in the Wild

Please post your photos of carnivores taken in the wild. Mine are usually from zoos, but I recently had a great time following a bobcat in Yosemite. He was not timid, nor was he aggressive, he was in fact completely unconcerned with people. My cousin (also a photographer) and I followed him for almost an hour.

Photo was edited to remove a couple hikers from the background and add a little more sky on top.

5D3 with 70-200 (at 70) 2_8 L non IS (set to f4).

Venus Optics Makes the Laowa 105mm f/2 STF Official

HTML:
<p><em>An apodization element is incorporated to produce images with smooth and creamy bokeh while maintaining excellent sharpness at the focal plane.</em></p>
<p><strong>Anhui China, Mar 10, 2016</strong> – Venus Optics, the Chinese camera lenses manufacturer who had launched the world’s Widest 1:1 Macro lens last June, has just released another extraordinary lens, Laowa 105mm f/2 (t/3.2) Smooth Trans Focus Lens for DSLR cameras.</p>
<p>The new Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus Lens incorporates an unique optical design with an apodization (APD) element next to the aperture. The APD element resembles the function of an ND filter which becomes thicker towards the perimeter, gradually reducing the amount of light transmission towards the periphery to produce a soft, natural and beautifully diffused out-of-focus rendition (or called bokeh).</p>
<p>The new Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus Lens offers two separate diaphragms. The stepless 14-bladed perfectly circular aperture, in conjunction with the apodization element gives this lens the ability to produce smooth and pleasing bokeh. It is also useful for videographers to control the amount of light passes through the lens. The 8-bladed aperture is to determine the effective aperture opening (f-number) and the depth-of-field formed.</p>
<p><!--more-->

The lens houses with 11 elements in 8 groups with 1 piece of High Refractive elements, 3 pieces of Low Dispersion elements and 1pc of Apodisation element. This optical design is proven to deliver images with extreme sharpness and limit the chromatic abberations at its lowest. Floating design is also adopted to ensure a superb performance even in close focusing distance. The enclosure of the lens is fully made of metal to strengthen its durability. Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony FE, Sony Alpha and Pentax K mounts are available.</p>
<p>The Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus lens will be available at authorized resellers and at the English official website (<a href="http://www.venuslens.net/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.venuslens.net</a>). The recommended retail price without tax is USD 699.00.</p>

Full Frame Addition: 5d2, 5d3, 6d, wait for 5dx/4 ??? Landscape Images

My go-to body is a 70D and I am very satisfied even when making 24x36 prints.
It could well remain my go-to but I would like the increased DR etc. from a full frame sensor (or am I nuts?)
The FF would mostly live with tripods, would not need a million AF points, always be used in AV or M modes.
I have two kits:
The Holy Grail of STM lenses for the 70D: 10~18, 18~135, 55~250, 24 f2.8
Full Frame (& Film) lenses for everything: 17~35L, 28 2.8, 28~105 USM, 50 STM, 70~200L, 100 Macro USM
If I buy a FF, I will probably get it with 24~70 f/4L
Two opinions sought: (1) Does FF really deliver better RAWs than APS-C; (2) which FF sensor is best price/performer?

Alternative to Bower VA346 Ultra Compact Professional Flash Bracket

Hi All,

Other day I bought this bracket from Adorama. I am not happy with the bracket but I am looking for similar product. Issues with this design is when L is on right side, the vertical rod is too close to the grip preventing me to hold my 5D MK3. When I reverse the bracket, I cannot reach the view piece. Reverse design of it fits my requirement. Anybody got any suggestion?

<p><strong>Missed Photo Ops a Thing of the Past</strong></p>
<p>The Canon EOS Rebel T6 camera provides a wide ISO range of 100-6400 (expandable to ISO 12800), making it ideal for shooting both still and moving subjects in a wide variety of lighting conditions ranging from low light to bright sunny days. In addition, the camera is capable of shooting high-resolution 18 megapixel still photos continuously up-to-three frames per second (fps), with predictive autofocus to help keep every image sharp and clear, even with moving subjects.</p>
<p>The Scene Intelligent Auto mode in the Canon EOS Rebel T6 camera analyzes the image, accounting for faces, colors, brightness, moving objects, contrast and whether the camera is handheld or on a tripod. Scene Intelligent Auto mode then chooses the exposure and enhancements that can bring out the beauty in virtually any scene or situation. Simplifying DSLR image capture, Scene Intelligent Auto mode lets you concentrate on composing images without puzzling over settings.</p>
<p>Another exciting addition to the Canon EOS Rebel T6 camera is a new ‘Food Mode’ on the mode dial for the foodie or blogger to easily capture stunning images of the food they love. This mode enhances the color and brightness of the food images while at the same time making the images ready to share. Other fully automatic exposure modes include portrait, night portrait, landscape, sports, and close-up. Additionally, the easy-to-use Full HD video mode captures sharp, high-definition video up to 1080p resolution with the choice of automatic or manual focusing. Creative filters such as Fisheye, Toy Camera, Miniature, and Soft Focus give users additional ways to create fun and imaginative images to enjoy, print and share. The camera’s new “white priority” Auto White Balance setting enables users to create images with a more neutral tone when shooting under incandescent lighting. In addition to all the automatic modes, the new Canon EOS Rebel T6 camera provides complete manual exposure and focus controls plus RAW image output for advanced amateur photographers and photography students.</p>
<p>The Canon EOS Rebel T6 camera is compatible with the entire Canon EF and EF-S lens system including over 60 current models enabling users to capture their world in different perspectives ranging from Fisheye to Super-Telephoto. Scheduled for availability in April 2016, the estimated retail price of the Canon EOS Rebel T6 camera will be $549.99<span class="green">**</span> when bundled with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II standard zoom lens.</p>

Advice on CSC Camera

Hi all.I need advice on a CSC camera. As im getting older im realising I need a CSC camera for when im travelling or just out and about. Carrying my 1DX and a load of lens's can be a pain at times. Ive never owned a CSC but would like one that will be used only for landscapes/streetscapes and general travel. ISO 100-400 is all I use for landscapes, need a good lens quality with it, wide as possible. Im a Canon fella but im open to any manufacturer. I don't as a rule do video recording but now and again might do a bit. Oh and not one that costs £1000's as it will only be used now and again and printed no bigger than A2/A3. People I know have small cameras from Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, Canon and all rate each one highly.

So has anyone got any advice on a decent CSC camera that might fill my needs.

Thanks for any advice everyone.

Mick

Shutter-shock in mirrorless cameras

"Mirror slapper" is a common term of Canon abuse in these threads. But, the mirrorless cameras have it even worse. I am constantly on the look for lightweight supertelephotos for birding, and micro 4/3rds might be one route. The new Panasonic Leica 100-400mm f/6.3 lens has fantastic resolution and even better is the Olympus Zuiko 300mm f/4. Olympus makes superb cameras, and the new Panasonic Lumix GX8 has lotes of excellent features. But they both suffer from severe shutter shock between about 1/160 - 1/320 s (shades of the Nikon 300mm). dpreviews has done an excellent job on reviewing the Lumix http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dmc-gx8-review You have to use the electronic shutter to get around the shock. slrgear reviewed the Zuiko and had to do the same on Olympus bodies http://www.imaging-resource.com/lenses/olympus/300mm-f4.0-is-pro-ed-m.zuiko-digital/review/?product=1840

I am still tempted by the Panasonic, but it is really sad they are worse than my 5DIII mirror slapper, though there is some slap on my 7DII.

Thinking about springing for a 70-300L IS

My current longest focal length is 200 (200 2.8L ll). I don't have a desire to get much past 300 for my shooting styles but getting there with a Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 1.4 TC has only been decent for AF speed and IQ. At my longer focal lengths I usually am shooing stopped down so the variable/higher aperture doesn't bother me much. So, I've been mulling around getting a 300 f/4L IS for the better part of a year but just recently I realized the 70-300L has been off my radar and it might be just the ticket. I travel a fair amount and since I rarely shoot 35-70mm this will make a great 2 lens bag along with my 24-35 F/2.

I guess what I'm asking and posting for is some reassurance about how good this lens is as I've read multiple reviews on it being overlooked (as I did), underrated and very versatile for travel, shooting styles and portability. I believe I have seen it listed on many CR regulars gear lists so I thought this would be a great place to inquire.
Btw, I use a 5D3 and this lens is in my budget (as opposed to the 100-400 mk2)

Thanks!
