Canon EOS-1D X Mark II To Feature CFast & CF Slots [CR3]

HTML:
We’re told that the upcoming Canon EOS-1D X Mark II will feature one CFast slot and one CompactFlash slot. We had been told Canon was going back and forth on whether they would offer dual CFast slots or not. This will be a nice tradeoff for photographers, and they can upgrade to CFast on their own time, instead of having to go out and buy a bunch of new cards when the camera launches.

I’m hoping there is a good safety device that prevents CFast cards from being jammed into the CF card slot, or we may have a rash of bent pins in people’s cameras. I’m sure Canon developers have already thought of this though.

I probably would have preferred dual CFast slots, but I may be in the minority.

More to come…

Fujifilm Announces New Flagship X-Pro2 Camera

HTML:
Weather-resistant X-Pro2 features the world’s first Advanced Hybrid Multi Viewfinder, new 24MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor, and creative monochrome ACROS film simulation

Valhalla, N.Y., January 14, 2016 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation, a leader in premium mirrorless cameras, today announced the FUJIFILM X-Pro2, the new flagship range-finder style camera in the award-winning X-Series line. As the new pinnacle of X-Series photography, the X-Pro2 gives professional photographers an innovative Advanced Hybrid Multi Viewfinder capable of instantly switching between optical and electronic finders, a new 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III sensorfor truly remarkable image resolution, and a new X-Processor Pro that delivers dramatically improved response times for unmatched performance.

By combining these features with the ultra-high image quality of FUJINON X-Mount lenses and the world-renowned color reproduction technology refined over more than 80 years as a photographic film leader, the FUJIFILM X-Pro2 delivers the best ever results from an X-Series camera.

Advanced performance for professionals

The FUJIFILM X-Pro2 has the world’s first Hybrid Multi Viewfinder that allows photographers to take advantage of both an optical finder for a direct view of the subject as well as an electronic viewfinder to preview settings. The ability to instantly switch between these two types of viewfinders was first installed on the FUJIFILM X100 in 2011, but the latest version found on the X-Pro2 is the most advanced. It now features a Multi-Magnification function that automatically switches viewfinder magnification according to the lens in use and an Electronic Rangefinder that simultaneously displays the electronic viewfinder on top of the optical viewfinder.

Working together, the newly developed 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor and the high-performance X-Processor Pro image engine deliver pictures with a perceived resolution far greater than the actual number of pixels used. Moreover, the X-Pro2 now boasts 4x the processing speed of conventional image processing engines, which in turn gives users increased response times, even with the increased resolution. The powerful X-Processor Pro dramatically improves a wide range of response times, including a start-up time of just 0.4 seconds, the shortest shooting interval of 0.25 seconds, a shutter time lag of 0.05 seconds, and autofocus speeds as fast as 0.06 seconds. And with the option to use compressed RAW files, the X-Pro2’s performance and functionality now exceed the needs of professional photographers, including faster live view and even higher definition movies.

Cutting-edge autofocus system

The FUJIFILM X-Pro2 uses a new autofocus (AF) system that gives users an expanded number of selectable focusing points with 273 AF points. 77 of these are phase detection – for greater functionality and faster autofocus. With the X-Pro2, approximately 40% of the imaging area is now covered by fast, precise phase detection AF pixels, which means focusing speeds when photographing moving subjects have improved dramatically. By combining the processing capabilities of the new X-Processor Pro with a contrast AF readout speed that is 2x faster than before, the X-Pro2 delivers the fastest AF performance ever in an X-Series camera.

Weather-resistant for challenging shooting environments

The FUJIFILM X-Pro2 has a robust, weather-resistant body to meet the needs of professional photographers in tough shooting environments. The camera’s chassis is made from four pieces of magnesium alloy and is sealed with more than 61 points, making it dust-proof, splash-proof and capable of operating in temperatures as low as 14°F. In addition, it has dual SD card slots, for more reliable image storage and less card changing while on location.

Improved layout and new user interface design

The new FUJIFILM X-Pro2 embodies the true craftsmanship that the X-Series is known for around the world. The shutter speed dial, exposure compensation dial and finder switching lever are all milled from aluminum for a premium look and comfortable feel. The ISO sensitivity dial is now built-in to the shutter speed dial so camera settings can be confirmed at a glance without having to turn the power on. And the command dial position has been added to the exposure compensation dial. Selecting this function switches exposure compensation operation to the front command dial and expands the range to ±5EV.

The FUJIFILM X-Pro2 features Command dials on both the front and rear of the camera. And by adding a push function, they are easier to use, and still retain dust and water resistance. There are six function buttons to allow easier access to regularly used functions, and a new Focus Lever enables users to quickly select a focusing point, speeding up operation.

Photographers will find a new, easy-to-use graphical user interface design in the FUJIFILM X-Pro2 with fresh categories added to the tabs on the menu screen, allowing faster access to the item required. Users can register a maximum of 16 frequently used items in the new My Menu feature, and when combined with the 16 items from the Q Menu, a total of 32 shortcuts can be created.

The viewfinder display in the FUJIFILM X-Pro2 now offers a greater level of customization so it can further match the individual needs of the photographer. The X-Pro2 gives users a Bright Frame Simulation function in the optical viewfinder mode so the angle of view of each focal length can be confirmed without having to replace the lens, so the user can change lenses more accurately.

FUJIFILM X-Pro2 key features:

World’s first Advanced Hybrid Multi Viewfinder with 2.36 million dots and maximum speed of 85 frames per second

squeeky sound when mounting filters

i would appreciate any advice for a bit of a problem with my filters. For the most part my filters are B+W MRC-N
When i mount filters on some of my lenses there is a considerable squeeky sound coming from filter being screwed on the lens. Also the filter tread does not seem to fit the best. i have no problem with Hoya filters. i prefer B+W brand for the most part that they are very easy to clean. The question is: is there any non-greasy lubricant on the market that i can use to make the mounting process easier?

Thankfully,
Patak

Possibility of EOS M Announcement at CP+? [CR1]

HTML:

We’re told that there is a strong possibility that we’ll see some kind of an EOS M announcement for CP+ next month in Tokyo. The show runs from February 25, 2016 until February 28, 2016. The source said if there is an announcement for the show, it’ll be for the “prosumer” EOS M camera. No specifications were given for such a camera.

We’re told that it’s even more likely is that we’ll see multiple EF-M lens announcements for CP+.

There’s a buzz out there that Canon will make a big splash at this show, as we’re also expecting that the EOS-1D X Mark II will make an appearance.

35mm Shootout! 35LII, Sigma 35 ART, 35IS, Tamron VC

Hello everyone. In response to some requests to take all of these lenses (Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II, Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS, Sigma 35mm f/1.4 ART, and the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 VC pinch hitting for the 35mm f/1.8 VC) head to head, I've been doing a series of direct comparisons in a number of categories, including resolution/image quality, flare resistance, autofocus performance, and bokeh. The last video isn't live yet, but is in production at the moment. Most of these are in video format, but I've put together a docking page for it all along with some of the review image samples for you to draw conclusions from yourself.

Here's the landing page for the 35mm Shootout!: http://bit.ly/1ZqA4yM

I hope this helps some of you in your process to choose the right 35mm lens for you.

Press Release:

Leica Camera has introduced next-generation models of three of its classic M lenses: the Leica M Summicron-M 35 mm F2 ASPH., Leica Summicron-M 28 mm F2 ASPH. and Leica Elmarit-M 28 mm F2.8 ASPH., each delivering enhanced image performance and quality, thanks to their new optical design.

Additional improvements to the lenses include a more robust construction, now featuring a full metal rectangular lens hood with thread mount, and a threaded protection ring for the front of the lens when the hood is not attached. The lens cap is now also made of metal.

As with all Leica products, this classic trio of reportage lenses offers both optical and technical excellence. Made in Germany, the combination of state-of-the-art technology, the highest quality materials and meticulous manual construction ensures consistent quality, resulting in reliable products with outstanding durability.

The new generation Summicron-M 28 mm F2 ASPH. and Elmarit-M 28 mm F2.8 ASPH. lenses are scheduled to be available from the end of January. The Summicron-M 35 mm F2 ASPH. is scheduled to be available from February in black and, for the first time, also in a silver anodised finish.

The impressive Summicron-M 35 mm F2 ASPH. fast, classic prime lens delivers superior image performance and a unique bokeh. Despite its high speed and exceptional image quality, its dimensions are astoundingly compact. Furthermore, with its eleven blade iris, this new generation lens creates a circular aperture, lending out of focus areas an extremely smooth look and feel. Images are pin-sharp with rich contrast, and almost completely free from distortion with superb bokeh at all apertures and distances – and even when shooting wide open.

High performance and speed are also distinct characteristics of the Summicron-M 28 mm F2 ASPH. wide-angle lens. Its outstanding speed makes it particularly versatile and produces brilliant imaging results, even in difficult lighting conditions. At its maximum aperture, the Summicron-M 28 mm F2 ASPH. delivers rich contrast, differentiated reproduction of even the finest structures, a soft and smooth bokeh, and extremely high resolution. Improvements within the optical design in this new generation lens have made it possible to achieve superior image performance across the entire image field. The significant reduction of image field curvature guarantees better resolution of details from corner to corner within every picture.

The Elmarit-M 28 mm F2.8 ASPH. is the most compact lens in the entire portfolio of Leica M lenses. Thanks to its small size and light weight, this lens is a particular favourite with street and reportage photographers. Compared to the previous model, this new generation lens offers significantly reduced image field curvature, which brings considerably improved image performance with high resolution and brilliant resolution of details. The Elmarit-M 28 mm F2.8 ASPH. is practically distortion-free from infinity to its closest focusing distance of 0.7 metres, and provides an exceptionally clear view through the Leica M viewfinder.

X4 Circular Polarizer breakthroughphotography: My experience: BAD!!!

Just a heads up guys.

I funded these guys on kickstarter and it was supposed to ship in December. In January I didn't receive mine. I contacted them several times by email. Tonight I got on their support chat and got a very rude, snotty girl who made me feel like a dumb s**t. Long story short, I get an email calling me a troll and I am fired as a customer.

Don't use these guys, even if the product is good, service is poor, they are rude, don't deliver on time, etc., etc.

F & E Trading, LLC Responds to Canon USA Suit

HTML:
Photography Bay has continued their coverage of the legal battles between Canon USA and gray market retailers. This time, F & E Trading, LLC (who is allegedly BigValueInc & Electronics Valley) has responded to Canon USA’s allegations.

From: F & E Trading, LLC:

The Complaint defines “F&E” to encompass both F&E NY and F&E New Jersey. F&E NY’s Answer is only with respect to F&E NY. F&E NY denies knowledge or information sufficient to form a belief as to the truth of any allegations as to F&E New Jersey or Albert Houllou.

Photography Bay summarizes:

So, Canon may have missed the mark on serving the wrong company or, perhaps, it just has not been able to serve the right company and Albert Houllou yet, who was a key target it Canon’s Amended complaint.

4K vents/cooling

After seeing the Nikon D5 only allowing 3 minutes of 4K probably bc of heating issues Im left to wonder why dont these bodies have some sort of rubber stopper just like the ones that cover the connecters that you can just remove while shooting in 4K to let the heat escape these weather sealed cameras. The only catch is that you dont use it in a possibly hardware compromising environment...like outside in the rain when shooting 4K. Seems like an easy fix for a big problem like heat. You can even have a mode that activates tiny fans that you select when you have the stopper removed.

Review: Nikon D5 by Ole J Liodden

HTML:
Former Canon Explorer or Light Ole J Liodden, who switched to Nikon back in 2010 has completed his review of a preproduction version of the brand new Nikon D5 DSLR. The review is very well written with some very good photography.

As you already has understood – the new Nikon D5 camera is in my opinion not only a small improvement, but has set new standards especially regarding the AF-system and High ISO performance which will be hard to beat for other camera models. For me it looks like Nikon has found back to the “Nikon DNA” and again has a camera that is on top of the line. I’m really looking forward to get my final version of this camera (not Beta) and use it on my upcoming photo expeditions. Read the full review

We’re looking forward in seeing Canon’s response to the Nikon D5, we think it’s going to be pretty good. :)

RAW 4K Capture Feature Coming for Frame Grabs? [CR1]

HTML:
We’ve been told about a new feature that Canon may be working on for silent shooting mode. It’s explained below.

… a new canon design that can do very short bursts of raw 4k video, at less than regular video frame rate, to enable high quality frame grabs in silent shooting mode…

Doing frame grabs from video for stills is something a few people have been playing with since the introduction of the EOS-1D C, and Canon has even put some marketing muscle behind the technique. It’s likely an area that will see some advancement going forward. This is from an unknown source, so treat it accordingly.

35 L II, loose front end?? (Perhaps built in shock absorber?)

Hi guys,

I just got my 1dx back from yet another adjustment/repair. And it is still highly unstable with my 35 L II. I placed the front end down towards a table and did a focus from mfd to infinity, when I noticed the front tiliting back and forth on the table, I first thought the table was uneven, but soon noticed the whole part with the filterthreads and mount for the lens hood is loose!! I can push it in and it's like a spring action bouncing it back out!

There's a small gap between the focusing ring and the mount for the lens hood.

Does you 35 L II have this or what the hell happened to mine??

A-10s , F-16 and Warthogs!

we have 4 A-10 from 357th FS visiting our TX base for a week! on Dec 8th, we caught an F-35B testing the VSTOL and an Iraqi F16IQ. unfortunalty miss the F-35B from Royal Navy testing by a day! she did not fly the day I was photographing...

A small but useful discovery on the M3

This may be public knowledge, but I only discovered it accidentally today.

I realized that on M3 if I use an IR remote (the tiny $7 ones) to trigger, it'd keep shooting until I press the IR remote a second time.

Has this happened to you? You set up a tripod at a landmark in the background and you try to take a family picture. 10s delay works fine if everybody cooperates (usually the kids don't!) The 2s is too short. By the time you run back from the tripod a picture of your back is taken. When I tried the IR remote on other Canon cameras, it usually takes just one shot. On M3 It will keep going and going. I can get dozens of shots. This works great when taking pictures with young kids. I can also use my phone to do it but connecting wifi is too much work.

Anyway, just thought of sharing. Do let me know how I could do the same on a 5dmk3. The only way I know is to use a cable release, which is too cumbersome.

Unique Canon Lenses?

So fellow Canonites, it's time to celebrate one of our clearest and strongest advantage of using Canon... our vast selection of first party lenses.

What are some of the most unique or exotic lenses we have that simply does not exist in other platforms or made by third party manufacturers? Why are they unique and make the experience of using Canon worth it? Price point can also be an argument too.

Thanks!

Photography And Your People

I was thinking it may be fun finding out what everybody's spouse/family/partner/dependents think and know about your photography!

Here are the questions I thought I'd ask :D

1. Is your spouse/partner a photographer? If so, do you share kit/gear?
2. Does your spouse/partner allow you to take your gear with on vacations, a day out or to social events?
3. Does your partner know the real monetary value of your gear?
4. What do your family think about your photos?
5. Do your friends who have no interest in photography think you're overly obsessed?

Looking forwardd to seeing some replies :o
