Photography setup for skincare clinic, advice needed.

A dear doctor friend wants to set up photography equipment to shoot before/after faces and close up of skin. She wants to invest the least amount. I am thinking:

Crop Camera: It will all be medium to small size on her website so FF may not be needed. And there will not be any need to shoot above ISO 200. True/False? Which model?
100mm 2.8 macro. Single lens for both portraits and close ups. Yes/No? Most shots will be at f5.6 I think.

Need advice on cost effective:
Tripod,
Head.
Lights. Speedlight bouncing on umbrella? Lest expensive soft light is required.
Flash trigger. Anything cheaper than Canon?

Thanking you in advance.

Service Centers

The Calgary Alberta Service Centre closed a few years ago. There is no longer free sensor cleaning in the Canadian West. Mailing your expensive camera means a month without it and expensive fees, alternatively third party cleaning is out of warranty and at least as expensive as postage. The strength of Canon used to be the support network. That has changed since the closure in Calgary. I wonder what they knew to close this service centre?'' Have they closed other support centres and to what end?

TDP retests TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II on 5Ds R

The TS-E 24L II holds up remarkably well under 50MP.

The following link compare the TS-E 24L and the legendary 300/2.8L II, both lenses attached via 1.4xTC. The 300 is noticeably sharper in the centre of frame but the 24L shows it's strength in the corners of the 1.4xTC image (equivalent to mid-frame of full frame image)
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=486&Camera=979&Sample=0&FLI=1&API=2&LensComp=739&CameraComp=979&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=1&APIComp=3

The above comparison simulates resolving power under 2.9um pixels at least for the central portion of the frame. This equate to about 38MP on APS-C. These new generation Canon L lenses really pack quite an optical punch.

DXO obscuring/burying the 5DS R lens test data?

It's been a little over a week since DXO pushed out the mother lode of 5DS R lens retesting, and -- as much as I slay them for their nuts methods -- we should be grateful someone had the bandwidth to retest so many lenses (over 100!) on a 50 MP sensor.

The funny thing is, you wouldn't know the 5DS R testing was done when looking at their lens tables:
http://www.dxomark.com/lenses#hideAdvancedOptions=false&viewMode=list&yDataType=rankDxo

5DS R data is not aggregated with the rest of their testing.

Try sorting for the sharpest lenses. Not there.

Try filtering by EF Mount only. Not there.

Try filtering by brand to Canon. Not there.

The only way to see 5DS R data is to expressly pick the 5DS R as your camera in the advanced filters. I thought it was a glitch when this was so in the first 24 hours after finding the data, but it does not seem to be something DXO is in a hurry to fix. ::)

The sharpest 9 lens + camera results they've ever recorded are not visible unless you know the rock to look under. And if you'd like to see the 5DS R mounted lens scores tabled in comparison to other rigs* -- something DXO fondly does with Nikon/Sony glass sitting high above Canon in their scoring -- there is no way to do that at DXO presently.

#dxo #fairandbalanced

* We all know you shouldn't compare lenses across different rigs, but that never stopped DXO before, so I'd like to see them lie down in the bed they've made.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Announcement Coming in January 2016? [CR1]

HTML:
<p>We’ve been told by a couple of people that Canon is gearing up for a “significant’ DSLR announcement in January of 2016. While no camera was mentioned, we feel that any “significant” announcement would be for Canon’s new flagship DSLR and not an EOS 80D.</p>
<p>We have been <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/more-canon-eos-1d-x-mark-ii-talk-cr2/">told previously</a> that we should expect the new camera to be shipping no later than April 2016.</p>

Review: Zeiss Milvus 100mm f/2M by TDP

HTML:
Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the Zeiss Milvus 100mm f/2M. This is a lens I have a lot of interest in, as I rarely use autofocus when using a macro lens and I’d love to see the results of an f/2 aperture over the f/2.8 of the Canon competitor.</p>
<p>The Milvus is a lot more expensive than the Canon equivalent, but is it worth it?</p>
<blockquote><p>If you want the best, be prepared to pay for it. While no other 100mm DSLR lens can touch this one’s image quality at f/2 or f/2.8, there is a price to be paid for this quality. The price tag on this lens ranges from nearly 2x to well over 3x as much as the other options. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Zeiss-Milvus-100mm-f-2M-Lens.aspx" target="_blank">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Calling all birders! - some advice please!

I am a novice bird photographer and yesterday I tried to photograph a pair of Paradise Flycatchers on a nest with three chicks. The only access is from a window a little above the nest. I haven't measure the exact distance but I guess its about three meters from the camera.

I have managed to get quite a few images even with the birds been fed etc. and here are two...

One lens a 70-300L and Eos M3 via adapter plus a tripod

With the lens on the M3 I am getting exposures of around: 1/400 f7.1 at 1600iso.

My problems are:

1. Very very little depth of field = I am not getting the whole nest and the bird in focus

2. Very low success rate with M3 AF, I think the AF 'box' is too big and sometimes it will pick the branch behind the bird to focus on. I have also tried MF which would seem to maybe work a little better.

3. I have to use very high iso's to get acceptable min shutter speed and aperture. I am reluctant to go above 1600 but am going to try 3200iso next time.

4. I checked the Canon depth of field calc and on a crop sensor and equivalent focal length of 420mm (300x1.6) it is only 1.83cm at f16 and 3meters! - at f8 it is only 1.33cm..even at 300mm and f8 depth of field is only 2.74cm..

5. OK I know the M3 is probably the least suitable camera for the job, but it is what I've got...

6. Even with the equivalent 420mm lens I still have to crop quite a bit. I also zoomed out sometimes to improve (theoretically) the depth of field and to try and get the long tail in of the male bird...

The birds are very accessible and I am going back there again.

So is this just the way it is or is there a way I can improve matters?

Sony A7S II fares worse in low light than A7R II and the original A7S

DXO -- the A7S II is "Low light performance redefined":

http://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Sony-A7s-II-sensor-review-Low-light-performance-redefined/Comparison-1-Sony-A7S-II-versus-Sony-A7S-versus-Sony-A7R-II-Impressive-high-ISO-DR

Yet it's A7S predecessor and A7R II outperform it in their high ISO testing. Hmmm. Shouldn't the title be something more like "Low light performance nearly reaccomplished?"

Also, does anyone buy their conclusion on high ISO here? I thought the A7S II would handily beat the A7R II -- that (and video) is expressly what it's built for, isn't it?

Moving back to FF - 6D or 5D3 or wait for 6D2/5d4 ???

I'm an old EOS Film camera guy with a few older L 2.8 lenses -- and a 70D with many STM lenses.

I could hand hold my A2e/2.8L combos and get stellar results. Now the 70D/STM combos likewise give me stellar results. Hmmmmm... FF at 2.8 w/o IS seems to be just as good as 1.6x/STM in end results.

I want a FF body for landscape work that will give me slightly better image quality (shadow detail etc. w/o HDR)

5D3 and 6D prices are dropping very quickly. My 70D will do all the videos my family insists upon and it is great for sports (damned near everything else too!)

Making 24x36 canvas prints should not require a 5Ds/r -- it requires more than 16 meg but not 50...

Being on a budget, knowing that my FF purpose is landscapes, often low light, difficult manual focus...

What do I buy?

Peak Design Lens kit

Has anyone seen or used the Peak Design Lens kit (It's not out/available to the public, but it was part of their kickstarter campaign for their new messenger bag, not sure if it was shipping to those folks yet or not). Just curious if anyone has seen it in the wild or at a trade show etc.

Seems like a great option for me when hiking for carrying a 100mm macro or having a spot to quickly hang my 100-400 while I'm using the macro or a 24-70 etc.

Edit: this is what I'm talking about

Photographic Fraud

Don't know how this guy thought he would get away with it but he did for a while...

A Kellyville-based wedding photographer allegedly fleeced more than $170,000 from camera hire companies who loaned him professional equipment that he later pawned. Mark Jones, 47, who ran a wedding photography business called Jonah Photography, was arrested on Saturday Police allege he carried out the frauds between July 2013 and May 2015, hiring out expensive equipment from a string of different businesses, including Canon Australia. After hiring the cameras, he allegedly pawned them at stores across Sydney. The father-of-two was arrested at a Pawnshop in Blacktown on Saturday and charged with nine counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception. The matter will return to Central Local Court on December 9.

Teardown: Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II

HTML:
<p>Roger and Aaron at LensRentals.com finally had the opportunity to tear apart the brand new Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II. Most of us want to know if Canon actually did make the new lens the gold standard for build quality like the marketing department would like us to believe.</p>
<p>It looks like there’s truth in the marketing:</p>
<blockquote><p>…This lens is massively over-engineered compared to any other prime we’ve ever disassembled. It’s built like a tank where it counts; on the inside. Moving parts are huge and robust. Six big screws are used in locations where 3 smalls screws are common in other lenses. Heavy roller bearings move the focusing group, it doesn’t slide on little nylon collars.</p>
<p>…If I had to summarize the mechanical design of this lens, I would say simply that no expense was spared, no corner was cut.</p>
<p>Sometimes things are expensive because they’re worth it. Sometimes they’re heavy because they’re so solidly constructed. This is one of those times. <a href="http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/12/canon-35mm-f1-4-mk-ii-teardown" target="_blank">Read the full article</a></p></blockquote>

Canon EF 135mm f/2L Replacement [CR1]

HTML:
<p>Over the last few months we’ve received a few mentions of a replacement for the EF 135mm f/2L being in active development, with a possible announcement in 2016. A couple of the mentions have said the lens could possibly be an f/1.8, as opposed to a straight f/2 replacement of this classic Canon lens. There have been no mention of the lens getting IS, which I’d wager is the case.</p>
<p>The current EF 135mm f/2L was announced almost 20 years ago and could definitely use some modernization in build and optics.</p>
<p>We do think we’ll see an updated 50mm lens, either the f/1.4 or f/1.2L before we see any other high performance prime getting a refresh.</p>

Monkeys!

Hi!

Did you know that the only chance to see Monkeys in the wild in Europe is the small British colony of Gibraltar?

I was there recently and I'd like to share some impressions and storys I witnessed. To cut a long story short - the Barbary macaques of Gibraltar are way more spectacular than you'd think. They have learned to take advantage of the close proximity to humans, stealing from their slow, clumsy and especially clueless fellow primates unscrupulously.

The full story with pictures can be found here:
http://www.focrates.com/articles/spain_2015/spain_2015_part3.html

Greetings!

pretty little birds, what setup?

There are lots of shy little birds in the nearby swamp forest.
I have been trying to get pictures of them with my 50-500 Sigma but the focus is missing systematically.
I've tried various configurations of the AF AI-Servo and Single shot, various configurations of one spot and clusters. The camera can stay on the bird for a while, then a branch moves and it locks there and then loses all interest to the birds.

I do understand that this is a part of the business and I did not really expect walking in the forest and coming out with NG-quality pictures after my three or four first attempts. Today I am going to try with the EF 100-400 L Dust Pump.

Now, this is getting to be something serious and I'll probably need a bit more reach.
Been weighing the Tamron 150-600 against EF 300 f/4.0 with a 2x Extender II.
I would like to get an opinion before I buy. Ken Rockwell 8) said that the Tamron was a lot better than he thought. He knows. Bob Atkins compared the Tamron to the Nikon zoom and found that it was a lot better picture wise. He showed some sharp birds (Tamron) and some blurry ones (Nikon).

What would be the opinions here?
