Pentax Updates Full Frame DSLR Teaser

HTML:
<em>This comes from Pentax and not translated all that well.</em></p>
<p>PENTAX has always been a unique brand of camera. Never one to imitate other makes, PENTAX has stuck to its pursuit of original value to create high-performance cameras used and loved by pros and amateur photographers alike.</p>
<p>Let’s look back on the history of PENTAX, going back to its origins at Asahi Optical Co., Ltd. The company was established in 1919 as Asahi Kogaku Goshi Kaisha. It manufactured eyeglass lenses and cine lenses. In 1952, the company began camera production with its Asahiflex 1, the first single-lens reflex camera made in Japan. In 1954, this model evolved into Asahiflex IIB with a quick-return mirror. The Asahi Pentax AP, which came out in 1957, was the first camera to come equipped with a pentaprism—a five-side optical glass element—as well as a quick-return mirror. This was the first time the name PENTAX appeared. These models were followed by many other cameras—exclusively SRL—equipped with unique features that were the first of their kind, both in Japan and in the world. In 1964, the Asahi Pentax SP was the first SLR with TTL (through-the-lens) metering. Asahi Pentax ES, launched in 1971, was the first with TTL full-aperture metering and automatic exposure control.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>Not all PENTAX cameras used 35 mm film. In 1967, the maker put out the first medium-format SRL with built-in TTL exposure metering that used 6 cm x 7 cm film. The camera was aptly named PENTAX 6 x 7. A medium-format camera using 6 cm x 4.5 cm film, the PENTAX 645 (1984). Not only did PENTAX mobilize the medium-size camera world with 35 mm cameras, but it also launched the first medium-format interchangeable AF lens camera, PENTAX 645NII (1997), achieving both high-quality pictures and mobility. The camera has been used and loved by photography lovers of all kinds.</p>
<p>As for digital SRL cameras, in 2003, PENTAX *istD was unveiled as the smallest and lightest weight camera in the world. PENTAX K100D (2006) was well-received as the first PENTAX digital SRL to have built-in image stabilization. The same year, PENTAX K10D was released. It had the same functions as K100D as well as the first dustproof and weatherproof structure, and achieving a reputation for overall excellence in an SLR camera. It received 3 major international camera awards: TIPA, Camera of the Year, and EISA. In the years that have followed, the maker has continued to release unique cameras, such as the digital SRL with the well-known medium-format 645 mount, PENTAX 645D.</p>
<p>Coming up in spring 2016!

PENTAX is launching a Digital SLR with a brand-new format.</p>

Review: PhotoZone - 35L II on 5DS R

Photozone's take on the 35L II, with their go-forward reference camera, the 5DS R:
http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/964-canon35f14mk2?start=1

A mixed endorsement for sure. It's absolutely off the charts in the middle of the frame, but wide open the Sigma 35 Art outresolved the 35L II in the corners -- with a 22 MP 5D3!

In the conclusion:

"Speaking of the competition we are primarily talking about the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art. Now we haven't tested this lens on the EOS 5Ds R yet but at least in terms of resolution we are having some strong doubts that it is inferior to this new Canon lens."

(Keep in mind that the Sigma 35 Art -- though stellar optically -- is pretty much dead to me based on a rental that showed a very poor hit rate with the AF when shooting wider than f/2. I've long said the 35L II is worth $1500 if it 'only' turns out to be a Sigma 35 Art with reliable autofocus.)

TS-E for dummy

Ok, time to educate a dummy. For some time I've been looking for the TS-E lens(es), and reading quite a bit about them too. Problem is that without one in hand, the instructions can be complicated. Now I finally snatched one from the Canon refurb deals, 24 Mark II :) Waiting for the shipment to arrive...

I'm sure I'll learn plenty by just playing with the knobs, but to start with, can someone give dummy-proof setting how they usually use in certain situations. Dummy-proof as in how is the tilt (including direction), shift (including direction), rotation and focus, for following scenarios:

1: Typical landscape

2: Typical tall building when standing relatively close

3: The "mandatory" miniature shot

For 1), I was reading one recommendation about rotating 30 degrees, and then shifting each end, rotate 30 to another side and again shift. Then stitch the 4 shots.

For bonus points: Seems tripod is recommended usually. Anyone use handheld?

And should I get ND and/or CPL?

Canon U.S.A. Introduces Its First 4K Projector

HTML:
<p><em>Various Markets and Applications for the Canon 4K500ST include Simulation and Training, Museums and Galleries, Industrial Design and Higher Education</em></p>
<p><strong>MELVILLE, N.Y.,</strong> — Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today unveiled its REALiS 4K500ST Pro AV LCOS Projector which delivers 4K resolution of 4096 x 2400, up to 5000 lumens* and Canon’s LCOS Technology with AISYS-enhancement for brilliant, high-brightness and detailed image reproduction. The REALiS 4K500ST also offers a Genuine Canon 4K lens and a robust collection of advanced professional setting features, including Marginal Focus which helps ensure content projected on the peripheral portions of domed surfaces remains in focus.</p>
<p>At only 38.8 pounds this model also offers one of the most compact and lightweight form factors of a high brightness 4K Projector. The REALiS 4K500ST’s combination of outstanding image quality, advanced features and compact size make it ideal for applications like immersive simulation and training which require outstanding image quality but may have limited spacing.</p>
<p>“Demand for 4K projection display continues to rapidly expand in many existing and new markets, and Canon has responded by developing a unique model that combines 4K resolution and high brightness in a compact form factor,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Canon has leveraged its decades of expertise in advanced optics, image processing, and projection technologies to help the REALiS 4K500ST LCOS Projector deliver outstanding 4K image quality, versatile display features, and compact size needed to satisfy many of the requirements of today’s 4K projection professionals.”</p>
<p><strong>Advanced Optics, LCOS and Image Processing Technologies

</strong>At the core of the Canon REALiS 4K500ST projector’s highly detailed 4K resolution display capabilities and versatile performance features is the integration of advanced Canon optical, LCOS and image processing technologies.</p>
<p><strong>Optics

</strong>The 4K500ST projector comes equipped with a specially designed Genuine Canon 4K short focus wide zoom lens and throw ratio of 1.0 – 1.3:1, allowing it to project a 10 foot. wide image from an approximate distance of only 10 foot. This projection lens is the first to possess advanced spherical focus capabilities derived from Canon’s renowned L-Series EF camera lenses which is distinguished by a bold red ring around the outer barrel. The lens delivers superb performance due to such sophisticated Canon optical technologies as ultra-low dispersion (UD) glass, aspherical lens elements and super spectra multi lens coatings. Advanced Canon optical technology in the REALiS 4K500ST is also present in its next-generation AISYS (Aspectual Illumination System) Optical Engine. This unique engine helps ensure the projector delivers an ideal combination of both brightness (up to 5000 Lumens) and contrast ratio (up to 2500:1), while also helping the projector maintain a small form factor. The 4K500ST is also able to deliver a virtually consistent level of brightness throughout its zoom range thanks to the combination of the Genuine Canon 4K lens and AISYS Optical Engine.</p>
<p><strong>LCOS Technology with AISYS-enhancement

</strong>The 4K500ST is the newest member of the REALiS Projector series which all feature Canon’s LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) Technology with AISYS-enhancement. This advanced technology is renowned for delivering virtually seamless images with outstanding color reproduction, and low-latency playback for improved display of video content. In addition to offering ultra high resolution of 4096 x 2400, the REALiS 4K500ST is capable of projecting other popular 4K resolutions such as the DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative) standard of 4096 x 2160 as well as Quad Full High Definition (QFHD) of 3840 x 2160.</p>
<p><strong>Image Processing

</strong>The REALiS 4K500ST also integrates powerful dual image processing engines that execute such complex tasks as smooth reproduction of uncompressed 4K video at 60 or 30 fps, and two upscaling technology options (BiCubic and Canon’s unique Shape Trace) to optimize 2K video and other non-native 4K resolution content.</p>
<p>Advanced image adjustments on the REALiS 4K500ST also include the following optional features:</p>
<ul>
<li><em><strong>Motion Blur Reduction: </strong></em>offers three different modes (Strong, Low and Off) for improved visibility when video content movement is fast**.</li>
<li><em><strong>Dynamic Gamma:</strong></em> analyzes individual areas of an image for specific, independent contrast adjustment so light and dark areas do not appear over or under exposed.</li>
<li><em><strong>Memory Color Correction:</strong></em> enhances skin tones and other color features for rich, vivid results that look striking to the human eye.</li>
</ul>
<p>The Canon REALiS 4K500ST also offers six different pre-set image modes, as well as three customizable image modes, to help optimize quality based on content type and projection environment. The projector’s special DICOM® Simulation Mode can be ideal for displaying monochrome digital X-rays, CAT scans, and MRIs with superb grayscale gradation. This mode, which offers both clear and blue base color temperature presets, simulates the results of devices compliant with the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Part 14 standard***.</p>
<p><strong>Ease of Installation and Maintenance

</strong>Weighing only 38.8 pounds, the Canon REALiS 4K500ST can be installed to suit a wide range of applications. Motorized Lens Shift, Zoom and Focus and a variety of other advanced professional calibration settings provide further installation versatility, including:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong><em>4-Point Keystone Correction</em></strong>: allows the corners of the image to be independently adjusted to help ensure optimal image reproduction.</li>
<li><strong><em>Built-in Edge Blending</em></strong>: enables the projection of one seamless, large image from multiple projectors without the need of special software.</li>
<li><strong><em>360-degree Vertical Installation</em></strong>: allows the projector to be positioned anywhere on the vertical axis****. Fan speed can also be adjusted to help optimize results (depending on projector positioning).</li>
<li><strong><em>Advanced Registration</em></strong>: allows independent position adjustment of the three primary colors (RGB) with high accuracy (0.1 Pixel) ultimately reducing blurred colors or lines often projected at the edge of an image.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Versatile Connectivity</strong>

Generous industry-standard connectivity on the Canon REALiS 4K500ST includes four DVI and two HDMI inputs supporting single, stripe and cross configurations for 4K, 2K or HD video playback. This model supports PJLink™ which makes it possible to control and monitor the projector over the network – a feature excellent for observing lamp hours, usage and more. For even more control, the REALiS 4K500ST is a Crestron Connected device and supports AMX Device Discovery.</p>
<p><strong>Price and Availability </strong>

Canon REALiS 4K500ST has a suggested list price of $54,990 and is scheduled to be available through authorized Canon dealers by April 2016. The Canon REALiS 4K500ST is backed by the Canon Three-Year Projector and Lamp Limited Warranty (120 day lamp coverage), and the Company’s award-winning Professional Service & Support which includes a Three-Year Advanced Warranty Service Exchange Program and a Service Loaner Program.</p>
<p><strong>I/ITSEC 2015 </strong>

The REALiS 4K500ST Pro AV LCOS Projector will be on display in the Canon booth #2213 at the I/ITSEC 2015 Conference from Monday November 30th – Thursday December 3rd.</p>

DXO finally re-tests EF lenses on the 5DS R

This just dropped:
http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Canon/EOS-5DS-R---Lenses-tested

They have published their testing of EF lenses on the 5DS R for the first time. No testing on the 5DS that I can see (yet). But this represents a good 100+ EF lenses retested in a 50 MP context, so love or hate DXO, I think you'll be hard pressed to find another site so comprehensively trying to answer the questions of "How much of the 50 MP will my lens actually 'see'?" or "Is my lens future-proofed for the high MP world?"

None of the rankings or 'lens selector' doo-dads or lens baseball cards report the new scores, but if you choose a lens and select the body it's on as the 5DS R, the new scores are there.

Basic rebel T3 to a 70d for amatuer?

Hey all :) posted in another thread but thought I'd make my own because I'm selfish and want all the attentions! Haha.

I'm a noob. But I've been using my t3 and 50mm 1.8 quite a lot over this summer and the last. Quite happy with them. Here's a few photos I've been taking, I almost only do automotive photography. It's what I love! I know I'm not very good don't be too harsh!

Sorry if these are too big! I'm posting Off my iPhone. Not the best photos and not all crisp and in focus, especially the r32 vw.

I recently picked up a canon 10-18 as my first wide angle and it's WIDE! Compared to my 1.8 it's much harder to use and will take some getting used to for sure.

My current dilema is this. There's a used 70d in my area for $600cad, seems to be in great shape I went to look at it last night and am thinking about it a lot. For just general car photography do you guys see the 70d as a big improvement than my older t3? I feel like the t3 is limiting me slightly because of the not so great autofocus vs the 70d's far superior system. But is it gonna be much an improvement for me for stills like the ones above?

I've been told that the 70d won't offer me much of a difference. Except of course for build quality, ergonomics and autofocus. I'm not making any money and not printing my shots, really I'm only processing in Lightroom and a little photoshop if needed, then straight onto Instagram or Facebook.

Thanks for your insight!!!

Crossroads. Get metabobes and stick with EF, or throw my lot in with MFT?

Just got a panny g7 for video.
Have the money to drop on a metabones xl adaptor.

Just thinking, do I want to use the big ef lenses on the diminutive g7? Mainly for video so will be shooting mf for that, but on the odd occassion I shoot stills, would I not rather fast af and is, and compact form?

So my options as I see it:

Get the metabones. Treat the g7 as a stopgap for 4k until Canon make a modestly priced EOS 4k body.

Sell up my EF gear and put it into compact, fast mft primes with IS & decent AF (for stills)

Sync issues w/ studio light, wireless triggers, and 70D. Please Help!

Hi,
I'm new to using a studio light and wireless triggers. I just bought a Godox 300SDI studio light and Neewer wireless triggers. I currently have a receiver connected to the 300SDI and another connected to the 70D. The receiver on the 70D is connected via PC Sync cable. As soon as I connect the PC Sync cable to the remote plug on the 70D, the camera is constantly adjusting its focus. Is this normal? When I use the Neewer wireless trigger, both the camera and the studio light flashes. Normally after each shot, without the PC Sync cable connected to the remote port on the 70D, I'm able to see a 2 sec. preview of the shot. However, with the cable connected, I no longer get the preview. Is that normal? With these issues aside, reviewing the shot taken, no matter what intensity I set the studio light to, the image stays the same as if there were no flash at all. What am I doing wrong!? Thanks for any help.

high-speed sync with wireless radio trigger?

My current Cactus triggers are limited to 1/200th of a second. Is it possible to go all the way to 1/8000 by only changing the radio triggers? At the moment, I don't have budget to change the studio strobe.

I'd like to shoot in my studio at 1/1000 (or faster) with my current (cheap) studio strobe and my 600EX-RT speedlites at 1/2 or full power. Is it possible or am I asking too much?

Canon's new Blue Goo

I'm curious about the stuff that Canon used in the new 35mm II that it calls "BR" and is - depending on whom you ask - some sort of solid element placed between to others in a group; or instead some sort of goo that sits between them.

The answer won't affect my lust for this lens, but I'm curious if - now that the lens is out in the wild - someone has determined what the heck the stuff is. I would have thought that there would be a patent on it that would be pretty specific about how it works. And, importantly, I am hoping to coin the "Blue Goo" term and spread its usage to help the Canon marketing people lighten up.

Perhaps Roger C. can drill into one of the hopelessly broken lenses he'll inevitably find coming through his rental desk. Suggestion: when you do, film it like "alien autopsy." Your blog editor will love you for that.

Another upgrade question.

Hi Folks.
I have a 7D which I struggle to get quality shots from, usually the focus appears off, yes I have AFMA'd the lenses, I see people using the same gear (7D with 70-200 IS LII with 2X III) getting good shots and wonder if it is me, technique etc but the odd sharp shot during a days shooting where I haven't knowingly changed technique has me confused. Just occasionally the shots are much sharper so I wish to upgrade as I feel consistently disappointed with my photography.

Targets are wildlife, cars, planes and general family and pets.

I was very much set on a 5DIII, then some of you (you know who you are ;D) started posting shots from the 7DII which look great.
So this is aimed primarily at people who have upgraded from a 7D and have experience of using the 70-200 IS LII with and without 2X III converter on both a 7DII and 5DIII.
How does this combination hold up on each camera?
What is the highest ISO that you use on each camera that gives clean shots?
How is the ISO noise, is one nicer than the other?
How is the shadow banding? I have found it a couple of times on the 7D and it is horrible!
Does the shadow banding lift batter on one than the other?
The AF system looks similar on paper, but is the 7DII much better?
Do cropped 5DIII shots compare well to the "extra reach" of the 7DII?
What does each camera have that is missing (and that you miss when swapping bodies)?
If you think I have missed an important question please add it and an answer.

Tomorrow (Sunday) I'm going to the LCE camera show in Southampton, I hope to try both bodies with this combination for myself with my own CF card so I can look at and edit them for myself.

I understand that ISO and noise is subjective, but I'm hoping that although each person may have different limits there will be a similar difference from each person.
Sorry for the rambling post.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers, Graham.

5dsr vs 5d3 question

Question for all you knowledgeable people: Do you think that the IQ of 5dsr is an improvement over 5d3? If yes, how so please? I sold my 5d3 and now have only 1dc with me which rents out very so often and I am left without a body. Am confused if I should buy a 5dsr or 5d3. Having said this, I think I will be buying 5d4 when it launches. Pls advice.

Fuji About to Launch a Medium Format System?

7D2

Now that prices have dropped a lot since the 7D2 has been announced, I decided that it was time to trade my trusty 7D in for a new 7D2.

I got it a couple of days ago and from my first impressions I must say this is one heck of a camera. It feels very well put together and I took it out this morning for some sample shots and this thing is lightening fast. I even tested my Tamron 1.4 tele on it and even at f8 it didn't hesitate to focus, even in poor light.

I did some online research and found that the Sandisk Extreme Pro compactflash cards were much faster than the equivalent SDHC cards. Hmmm, I would rather that Canon put 2 compactflash slots in rather than one and the other... strange.
