G1X MK II or G5X or M3 or ...?

Hi,

I'm thinking about replacing my Olympus XZ-2 with a better compact camera (probably some time after Christmas). My other cam is an EOS 60D.

Some thoughts about the cameras I consider:

a) Canon G1X Mark II (570,- €)
+ Good image quality
+ Good DoF-control (for a compact)
+ good zoom range (24-120 eq.)
- Slow (fps)
- Slow (autofocus)
- expensive EVF (250,- €)
b) Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 (570,- €)
+ Fast autofocus
+ EVF
- No flash
- Unreliable AF, esp. in low light ( ??? )
- Lens: susceptible to flare
c) Canon G5X (approx. 850,- €)
- IQ below G1X II
- slow (fps & AF)
+ expensive (compared to LX100, but eq to G1X + EVF)
+ smaller
d) Canon EOS M3 (560,- € incl. 18-55 lens)
- bigger than G1X II (but in the same price range)
- slow AF compared to other ILCs
+ ILC
- expensive EVF (250,- €)
e) Olympus OM-D E-M10 (570,- € with manual 14-42 zoom)
- bigger
- not compatible with EF lenses
+ Best IQ
+ fast (AF and fps)
+ EVF
f) Sony A6000 (600,- € incl. 16-50 kit lens)
+ best-in-class ;)
- bigger
- crappy kit lens
- bad user interface ( ??? )

Of course the first question is whether I should choose a compact or an ILC (bulkier, but better IQ/performance). I'm really not sure, especially as prices are similar.

What do you think? Any comments welcome.

Regards,
Oliver

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Talk [CR2]

HTML:
<p>There’s not a lot of information coming in about the replacement to the EOS 5D Mark III, which we expect to be announced no earlier than the spring of 2016. All signs point to it coming after the successor to the EOS-1D X.</p>
<p>The latest thing we’ve been told is that the camera would have a higher resolution than the EOS-1D X Mark II, which at last count would be in the area of 24mp. While the camera would remain a good videography DSLR, again we’re told that 4K is not part of the plans for the EOS 5D Mark IV.</p>
<p>We do wonder if we’re going to see another split in the EOS 5D line, with a lower megapixel option for ISO performance and something in the high 20mp’s in resolution for the masses. We’re seeing nothing that suggests we’ll get a cinema version of the EOS 5D Mark IV, but there continues to be hints of multiple cameras coming.</p>

Patent: Coating for ND Filter from Canon

HTML:
Is Canon getting further into the filter business? A patent for a new coating on an ND filter has been published. The coating is to help minimize ghosting.</p>

<li>The refractive index changes toward the surface layer side from the transparent substrate side</li>
</ul>
<p>Canon could potentially find some value getting into the filter business, they probably have a good margin and Canon knows a things or two about optics.</p>
<p><em>As <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=28435.0">noted in the forum</a>, this could also be for internal ND filters that are in some video cameras and point & shoots.</em></p>

Canon Looking to Acquire Imaging Companies for Growth? [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that Canon is actively looking at acquiring imaging companies for growth. Canon did indeed attempt to acquire Sigma (something we didn’t believe until recently), but was rejected by Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki as he attempts to make Sigma the best lens manufacturer in the world. Most people suspected the acquisition was for foveon patents, as Canon is actively developing layered sensors, but that acquisition may have also been for Sigma’s expertise in adapting lenses for multiple mounts. There are a ton of EF lenses out there, and Canon wants to keep them relevant moving forward, even into the mirrorless space.</p>
<p>Canon had also looked at the books of Swedish camera company Hasselblad many years ago, but that was probably never a serious interest. There just isn’t enough potential volume in medium format for any significant growth. I was told that the global market for medium format digital back is about 5000 units per year.</p>
<p>While Canon is moving slowly into the security business, they believe growth for imaging will come from two places, the professional video market and acquisition of an imaging company. While they’re well on their way in developing Cinema EOS, and we can expect an “A” camera from Canon at NAB in April, the photography market remains stagnant.</p>
<p>We weren’t told what companies Canon may be targeting, only that things are actively moving in that direction.</p>

Ultimate Gear Versus Weight and Size

What is most important to you: Ultimate performance or weight and size considerations?

  • I will always opt for the ultimate gear possible

    Votes: 35 50.0%
  • I prefer lighter, smaller gear with great performance

    Votes: 20 28.6%
  • I choose the lightest, smallest gear due to health issues

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • Depends on whether I'm shooting professionally or not

    Votes: 10 14.3%
  • I will carry smaller, less expensive kit in unsafe areas

    Votes: 5 7.1%

So a ongoing contention in most posts relates to size of gear and how much they weigh and it is such an overwhelming desire by some, that they will settle for lesser gear in order to lighten their camera bags.

Do note that when I say lesser gear, I do not mean bad gear. Examples noted where say the 70-200 f/4.0 IS L vs the f/2.8 L IS II or 24-70 f/4.0 L IS vs the f/2.8 L II

I'm interested in hearing which camp you guys are in and for what reason do you favour your stance:
* Ultimate Gear, regardless of weight and other dimensions
* More manageable dimensions like weight and size

I'm in the ultimate gear/performance camp. I'd much rather lug around a few extra kilograms and get the best quality images possible.

*DISCLAIMER* I am in the process upgrading my gear so I will upgrade my 70-200 to the f/2.8 L IS II version someday.

Reply from Roger Cicala - re: robustness of articulating screens

Due to a (rumor) thread where it was guessed/hoped for/etc, that the 5D Mark IV would have an articulating screen, I decided to send Roger an email asking about information he may have regarding failure rates of articulating screens. In the email, I made mention of how some state that weatherproofing would be an issue, but then provided a counter example of Tony Northrup's where he had 4 cameras get soaked (2 of the GH4 and 2 of the 5D Mark III) and the cameras with articulating screens survived (GH4) whereas the 2 with the fixed LCD did not (5D Mark III).

Here's Roger's reply (reposted with his permission)

Hi Jonathan,

I'm afraid that's too big a topic to generalize on, except I will a bit. An articulating screen is another moving part that can break. But most of the time, that's going to occur with a lot less frequency than other things like LCD cracks, buttons dying, etc. Statistically, with less than 100 bodies that we have more most cameras with articulating screens there's no way we're going to see a difference compared to the frequency of all repairs.
In taking things apart it's obvious an articulating screen means a flex is entering the body. It may be well sealed, it may not. I would say from just taking things apart that I expect there would be a difference from whether the screen was in an upward or closed position.
But then I always am entertained by anecdotal evidence of water resistance. I do have the statistics on which camera bodies we carry have never died from water exposure: none. There's no body we haven't written off from water exposure. Some do seem better sealed than others. But I'll repeat what I always say: if the manufacturers believed in their water resistance claims, they wouldn't have a note in the warranty that says water voids the warranty.
That being said, I would (from my experience, not from any data) consider G4s and Pentax bodies to be relatively more resistant. Even though I've seen both water frazzled.

Best regards,
Roger

I responded saying that it was comforting that there weren't any glaring issues trending towards negative. I also mentioned that what he wrote would likely confirm for detractors and supporters, their positions for or against articulating screens. He replied with:

I think you've hit it on the head - people have very strong opinions, there aren't any facts to really alter anyone's opinion.

My dissection of what he said above. Keep in mind that I'm of the opinion that if you don't purposely try and break your articulating screen, it has a minuscule chance of happening. I also believe that for the most part, if an articulating screen were to be damaged, a camera with a fixed screen would also have been damaged. In other words, the utility of an articulating screen GREATLY outweighs the ridiculously small chance of something happening to a camera with an articulating screen that wouldn't have caused damage to a fixed screen camera. So if a persons argument for NOT purchasing a camera with an articulating screen hinges (pun most definitely intended) on it's robustness, it's a pretty weak argument (how's that for irony? hinge... weak... lol). Again... this entire paragraph and the commentary to come is ALL my opinion... so again, here's my takeaway from his email...

An articulating screen could break. But the chance of it happening is less than other things like LCD cracks, buttons dying, etc. Also, as many have pointed out numerous times, a camera owner could mitigate some risk from a cracked LCD by flipping the articulating screen around and hiding it.

Even though Lens Rentals has less than 100 bodies with articulating screens, their sample size is likely among the largest in the world (especially across multiple brands) and they haven't found a glaring problem. So the chance that someone who owns 1 body would find a statistically significant problem which applied across the board would be extremely unlikely.

An articulating screen can be as well sealed as a company wishes to make it.

Lens Rentals has had every type of camera body die from moisture of some sort.

My final takeaway is this... Roger's a REALLY cool guy to take time out of his day to answer my question for me.

Snagged some new gear :)

My patience paid off for me this year. I normally invest in good glass, but stay a little behind on the camera to save some money on my hobby. The sales this November have been great, so over the weekend purchased a 6D to replace my 5D and I picked up a 100-400 Mk II, both from the refurb store. On Monday the prices went even lower and Canon was kind enough to take an additional $100 off of the 6D and $264 off of the 100-400. I now have the 100-400 in my hands and it's a fantastic piece of glass. The 6D should be here on Friday. I'm getting close to having the right FF kit for me - just lacking the 16-35, but I'm watching the refurb stock closely.

Built-in automatic microadjustment possible?

I was thinking about 3rd party software solutions for making the AF microadjust easier, such as Focal. And thought...wouldn't it be great for Canon to implement a similar software in camera with an even more sophisticated microadjust feature? Put your camera on a tripod, use a target and let the camera do the rest by analyzing each image and adjust accordingly (just like Focal).

I believe Canon Service Centers are still spending a lot of time AF-fixing bodies and lenses on warranty/goodwill.

Any thoughts?

LED Panel Lights

Peter Hurley has a lovely LED lighting kit for sale in connection with Wescott
https://hurleyprogear.com/flexkit

It only costs a mere $5500.
Which would be about $7000 by the time you got it to Europe with taxes , transport etc.

I can see on ebay etc you can buy strips of LED light.
Is it possible to buy grids/panels of LED lights?
It seems like a set up you could potentially do for quite a lot less if you were could with DIY electronics (which unfortunately I'm not)
If you could get LED's in square or rectangle grids/panels that would be a good start.
They look very light and flexible.

It does come with:
"This kit includes 4 of Westcott’s innovative Flex LED mats, 4 modular Scrim Jim Cine Frames, extension cables, diffusion, mounting arms and studs, and a durable travel case"

I'm sure this adds to its usability and flexibility.

Samsung Imaging moving to Fuji?

We've lately heard about Samsung leaving the camera business here
http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=27727.msg547724#msg547724

Seems like the department will move over to Fuji.
At least the rumor website seems to think that, because they've already renamed themselves into "Fuji Rumors", see top left here
http://www.samsungcamerarumors.com/

I wonder what the guys over at http://www.fujirumors.com/ think of that ;)

Black bar on photo?

Today shoot I got couple times black bar on the photo. At random times, and no clue why that might have happened. I had 2 strobes, so can't think they both would time incorrect, so that leaves either the camera or the triggers, and I'm betting 90% that it's the triggers but would be nice to know for sure. Those are the Yongnuo 622s.

I'm not shooting at HSS, these were at 1/200. And the black bar is on image bottom, so sensor top. I'm thinking the curtain started to close already when it flashed, so was the camera curtain too early or the flash-trigger too late?

Anyone else had similar ones?
