Few RAW files from Otus 1.4/28ZE on 1Ds mark III

On my visit in Zeiss factory in Oberkochen, I had very short opportunity to play with new Otus. Not exactly fine art photography here ::), just fast snaps to see how it can perform at infinity and WO performance/ bokeh.

otusdyrkm.jpg

This thing is crazy sharp and contrasty WO as expected, only very small traces of LoCA WO and no traces of LaCA at all.
This particular copy looks slightly decentered at left side, but with good copy, you can probably shoot perfect infinity landscapes WO....nightscapers wet dream come true :D

Here you can download the RAWs.

And a side note, there is plenty of half-cut lenses over the entire factory...I wonder, if they have special department for this :D

5D Mark III lens correction for Tamron SP

A week ago I decided to give the Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD a chance based on the great reviews it gets all over the net. I have not been disappointed so far.

My question is this: Where do I find the lens aberration data to load into my camera? Is this even possible with a third party lens?

I've looked all over the net and cannot find anything about this. My cognitive ability isn't what it used to be either. For the past 6 months I've been having a lot of trouble remembering things and learning new things. That might be part of the problem too. I'm only 52, but it can be scary getting older.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II to Feature More Than 61 AF Points [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that the upcoming Canon EOS-1D X Mark II will feature a brand new autofocus system, which was to be expected and that it will offer more than the 61 AF points on the current EOS-1D X. The upcoming Nikon D5 is <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/nikon-d5-specifications-surface/">reported to have either 107 or 173 AF points</a>, which we’re told will be more than the Canon will be offering.</p>
<p>We weren’t told the exact number of AF points, only that the camera would feature a “slightly wider spread” of AF points and we’ll see the return of some kind of illuminated AF point when in AI Servo mode. We expect all of the AF points to be crosstype.</p>
<p>The same source also speculated there would be an advancement in liveview AF for this camera.</p>

Review - Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II

HTML:
<a href="https://vimeo.com/lauschsicht">LAUSCHSICHT</a> has completed their review of the brand new Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II. The review was done after using the camera for a SWISS International Airlines production.</p>
<blockquote><p>So at the moment we’re very positive about this camera. It’s fun to shoot with. It supports us with an impressive auto focus system, a nice button layout, internal ND, internal recording (meaning no external bulk attached) and long battery life. The dynamic range is impressive and the image that comes out of it looks more than promising. Noise feels more like grain, banding is not visible and color correction is turning the very flat CLog2 and C.Gamma images into stunning shots. It adapts to many shooting situations. It just feels like a good teamplayer. It’s about twice the price of an FS7 – yes. Is it worth it? I can’t really answer that but to be honest it feels like I don’t wanna give it back. <a href="http://www.lauschsicht.com/canon-eos-c300-mark-ii-review/" target="_blank">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Drone Maker DJI Buys 20% of Hasselblad

HTML:
<em>Hasselblad Group, the leader in high-quality professional cameras, and DJI, the world’s most-innovative aerial technology company, today announced a corporate partnership through DJI’s acquisition of a strategic minority stake in Hasselblad.</em></p>
<p>The partnership will allow opportunities and new ways of combining the technical knowledge and inventive spirit of the two industry leaders in their respective fields.</p>
<p>“We are honored to be partnering with DJI, the clear technology and market leader in its segment,” said Perry Oosting, Hasselblad’s CEO. “DJI and Hasselblad are equally enthusiastic about creativity and excellence, and we are looking forward to sharing technical expertise and paving the way for future innovations.”</p>
<p>“Hasselblad and DJI share a passion to provide creative people with cutting-edge, inventive technology to help them take visual storytelling to the next level,” said Frank Wang, DJI’s Founder and CEO. “With this partnership, we combine our strengths to further push the borders of what’s possible in imaging technology.”</p>
<p>Hasselblad and DJI will each focus on their individual strategic directions and related growth opportunities, with marketing and branding platforms continuing to delineate the two companies. Hasselblad cameras and equipment will continue to be handmade in Sweden, and DJI will continue to make products in Shenzhen, China. The partnership further establishes DJI’s leadership in the professional camera technology space.</p>
<p>DJI recently launched the modular Zenmuse camera system, including the Zenmuse X5 Pro and the Zenmuse X5 Raw – the world’s first Micro-Four-Thirds camera optimized for moving in space.</p>
<p>Hasselblad has a history of aerial photography, with its technology used in space on several NASA missions, including the first landing on the moon and several of the Apollo missions. Over the course of the company’s 75-year long history, the majority of Hasselblad’s business has focused on traditional medium-format cameras and photography equipment. In recent years, the company has made meaningful investments and announced significant product launches within the aerial arena, making a partnership with DJI a natural progression of the business.</p>

Interesting wishlist for mirrorless by Ming Thein

A comprehensive summary on what FF mirrorless could be. Not a Canon rumor so much as a rollup of one photographer's experience shooting next to everything on the market today (the opening police lineup of mirrorless rigs is a great conversation starter):

http://blog.mingthein.com/2015/11/03/how-to-design-mirrorless-right/

It's full of opinions, priorities and wants that are likely not the same as yours, it's still pretty damn insightful. You'll find your head bobbing in agreement to a number of his comments.

(Had no idea Nikon had an auto ISO setting that could be set to a shutter speed of 1 / [Lens FL]. Canon, please add that to my 5D4 wishlist along with spot metering at any AF point, thx.)

5DS/R pricing and landscape use

Anybody care to speculate about 5DS/R prices in the next 6 months or so?

I would like to upgrade my 5d3 before next May or so. Was really hoping for a 5d4 by then, but I doubt that will happen at this point. So I am considering a 5dSR for landscapes, since my shooting season begins about April or so (unless we hear reliable 5d4 info by then and that ends up looking like a lot better choice). Just wondering what people think will happen on pricing in the upcoming Holiday season and next year.

Also, any 5ds/r users care to share their thoughts on using this for landscapes so far?

Thanks for any info!

5d3 CF and SD slots

Hello folks, I'm the proud new owner of a Canon-refurbed 5d3. I'm wondering if the problem of slow CF speeds when a SD card present is still an issue with the latest firmware. I googled quite a bit but the most recent discussions I found were circa 2013.

I want to use an SD card as a backup (and mostly because I'm lazy and want to be able to just insert the SD card into my Macbook Pro instead of using a card reader). However, if it's still going to dramatically limit the CF slot, I might not do it.

Thanks!

Sony A7II Updated Auto focus / Uncompressed raw support

I do not know the validity of this but it looks like B&H let a Sony A7II software update announcement slip out early.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/news/sony%E2%80%99s-a7-ii-receives-uncompressed-raw-improved-af-support-firmware-update

It appears that the A7II will get raw file format and phase detection enabled for converted lens and uncompressed Raw support. Personally I hope this happens because I have been sitting on the fence trying to decide if I just get the A7rII. If my A7II can autofocus adequately with Canon Lense I can save my money for a Canon 5dr or Canon 6D II. It will also make my future lens purchases much clearer.

I bought the A7II to shoot primarily old manual lenses. So I would not see any real benefit going to the A7rII with those lense. But I sometimes like auto focus and the current A7II is about as good as my Canon XS stuck in Liveview. I also do not want to duplicate my Canon lenses unless I have to.

I will update when and if the update is available.

Answer with whatever assumptions about the flange distance you want, but remember that (I think) people will bolt heavy glass on it because we do stuff like that. But, again, that's your call.

Approximately 180 National Geographic Employees Being Laid Off

HTML:
From PDNOnline:</p>
<blockquote><p><a href="http://www.nationalgeographic.com/">National Geographic</a> has confirmed that 9 percent of their 2,000 employees (approximately 180 people) are being laid off, less than two months after the National Geographic Society announced that 21st Century Fox had acquired a controlling stake in the magazine and other media assets for $725 million. There is no word yet on how many people in National Geographic’s photography department have been affected. One photo editor for the magazine, Sherry L. Brukbacher, confirmed on Twitter that she was among the “many” let go today. In addition to the staffers being laid off, the company is offering buyouts to an unknown number of longtime employees.</p></blockquote>
<p>We sincerely hope National Geographic continues the work that is so valuable to nature and culture around the globe and beyond.</p>

5D III / 5DSR question on C1, C2, C3

Hi All,
This may be a stupid question.
I was trying to work out from the manual if I can set a Custom setting on the dial to have a minimum shutter speed the camera can't go below.
My general problem is that I don't seem to be as steady with a camera as I once was.
If I am using a 16-35mm and I'm not keeping an eye on shutter speed in AV mode it will go quite slow at times with a small aperture.
I'd like to set up an Av mode in the camera whereby the shutter speed doesn't drop below say 1/100 of a second, the aperture alone is being adjusted but the ISO can go as high as it likes.

Is this possible?

(I know I can do this by going to manual (which I often do) but some times I just want to concentrate on one thing at a time)

A Simple Filter Change Could Make Low-Light Photography Much Better

Did anyone hear about that before?

"Good low-light photography is one of the toughest nuts to crack: to get good pictures in the dark normally requires some combination of fast lenses and big, expensive sensors. But tweaking one filter that lives inside the camera could help big time."

FF mirrorless mount -- go thin or go with EF?

What should Canon's lens mount strategy be for FF mirroless?

  • Go thin with the flange distance and force EF glass owners to use an adaptor.

  • Go with the full EF mount right out of the gate.

  • Do both. Offer a thin FF mirrorless (with EF adaptor) version and a full EF mount version.

Whaddya got? What do you think Canon should do with FF mirrorless?

As everyone has a jillion unique takes on the mount, I am not going to allow entries of 'other' with this poll. :P

Keep in mind, this has nothing to do with the size of the grip -- I'm just asking about the flange distance.

Sony To Launch First f/2.8 FE Zoom?

HTML:
Sony will continue it’s aggressive lens development cycle and announce its first FE f/2.8 zoom lens. Apparently it’ll be an f/2.8 version of a current lens. The most likely candidates would be a 70-200 f/2.8 or a 24-70 f/2.8.</p>
<p>If you’ve used any of the Sony FE lenses, you’ll find that there really isn’t any way to make full frame lenses that much smaller. The current f/4 version of the 24-70 and 70-200 are quite large and resemble DSLR lenses. I can’t imagine how they’re going to keep size down in f/2.8 version of those lenses and keep the A7 series cameras useable, the balance is going to be very difficult to hold for long periods of time.</p>
<p>The announcement will come after the expected Sony A68 announcement on November 5, 2015.</p>
