DXO 35L II review - sharp like a katana, lower score than the Sigma Art

DXO put out another lens review and I read it and tried to understand it.

Shatner-esque inner monologue: "Why do I hurt myself like this?"

http://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-35mm-f-1.4L-II-USM-review-New-benchmark-for-open-aperture-performance

The 35L II is sharp across the frame at f/1.4, while the Sigma Art is slightly less so. But Canon got a lower sharpness and overall score anyway. Same score as the 35 f/2 IS USM. A paltry three points better than the original 35L.

Glad they put the 35L II through it's paces on Canon's highest resolving rig, the 5D Mark III.

Lucy pulls the football away again. I always fall for it.

EOS 5D Mark IV & IVc Specs Surface, Most Likely Bogus [CR0]

A new spec list for the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is making the rounds. We don't put any stock in and it's likely just clickbait. We have rated this [CR0]

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV will have a 28mp full frame sensor, 12 fps, Dual Pixel autofocus system AF III, crop mode (or clipping) to 1.3x, to simulate the sensor size of the EOS 1D old series, or 1.6x , to simulate the size of Canon's APS-C sensor, anti-technology flickr; sensitivity from 100 to 204.800iso, 409,600 in extended mode.
Canon EOS 5D Mark IV c: 18MP full frame sensor, very useful for optimizing the performance at high ISO and burst. Dual Pixel III AF autofocus system with 61 points of focus, ISO sensitivity from 100 to 204,800, 4k video.

It's Friday, have fun with it. I've been emailed a bunch of times about the above spec lists and just like Keith over at Northlight, we feel it's nonsense. There will not be a "prosumer" 4K DSLR from Canon in the next round of updates. The EOS-1D X Mark II will get the 4K video, but that's beyond the prosumer market.

We won't be linking the original source, but Northlight has if you're curious.

Wind is turning?

Looking at the local 'Leboncoin' buy and sell site it is striking to see that just some five months ago people were bidding their EOS FF bodies for exchange against the Sony 7 and even the Fuji XT cameras. Now there are multiple Sony 7 bodies for sale with Canon adapters. Love is eternal but its object can change remarkably fast.

From my own experience with the handling and user interface of the Sony A6000 I can very well see why people who take a lot of pictures get tired of fooling around and want to just get on with it. Which is easy with a Canon or a Nikon, whichever you are used to.

Flying to Dubai: Which lens should I buy

Early next year I will be flying to Sydney with a fuel stop at Dubai. I have been to Sydney before, but the fuel stop was at Singapore.

Can anyone who knows that journey recommend a suitable lens for capturing the Dubai skyline on the descent and then the climb back into the sky? Would a telephoto be best, or would the number of supertall buildings and their proximity mean that a wider lens is better?

I will have my 100D(SL1) about my person with one lens mounted. All other equipment including my 6D and 70-300L will be securely stowed in the overhead locker.

I have 24 IS and 50 macro to choose from, but would consider buying a one of the STM pancakes or 55-250STM before the trip.

I'm assuming that Qantas will be reasonably tolererant about wearing a a small camera about my person in addition to the overhead locker allowance. A pancake and SL1 combo would fit in a coat pocket if need be. Can anyone confirm my thoughts from their experience?

Canon vs Tokina Ultrawides Help

Hi guys! I'm on the market for an UWA lens, i've come across 2 lenses that i'm interested in.

Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 ver2 (Can be bought 2nd hand at around 320euros)
vs
Canon 10-18mm 4.5-5.6 stm is ( Brand new around 200euros )
Going to be mounted on a 70d.

my question is, will the canon be better with the IS compared to the tokina with the 2.8/f. I will be using the lens mainly for portraits/landscapes/street and will be doing zero to little videos. Bokeh is a plus, I guess.

Thanks in advance for the help!

What happened to the SL2?

There were a number of rumours for a release this September. Any news about that? Do I just need to go ahead and get an SL1? What could you possible do differently with the SL2 than, say Wifi (a must), perhaps a titling LCD (doubt it with the t6i), smaller (is that possible), pentaprism vs mirror (only Pentax seem to get that, but I wish Canon would do it). Otherwise, I'm aching for an SL1 with the 10-18mm for hiking.

What rain gear to bring shooting a concert fest?

Hi all,

I'm thrilled to be invited as part of the photog staff for this years Voodoo Fest in New Orleans.

http://worshipthemusic.com

However, it looks like Sat night and Sunday morning...it could get really rainy and stormy. I have a canon 5D3..brining my 70-200L f/2.8.....renting the 24-70L II....and will bring a couple of my other lenses (rokinon 14mm and canon 85 1.8).

I have a sling bag to carry everything....

I was thinking of trying to get some kind of poncho to bring along which would cover me and bag...but wondering if any of you pros out there might have better or additional suggestions?

I'm curious, if I'm shooting...and water gets on the lens...what do you use or bring along to dry the lens droplets off the lens?

Should I stuff a trash bag in my belt...and use that maybe to cover my sling bag if it starts coming down..?

Anyway..hoping someone with experience with this can make some suggestions. I start shooting tomorrow, but Friday should be clear...but there may be some nasty stuff come up on us by the end of the day saturday.

Thank you!!

Two EF-M Primes Coming in Q1 2016 [CR2]

HTML:
<p>Canon and the rest of the web have mentioned before that the company is going to become more aggressive with their mirrorless camera system the EOS M. We’re eager to see what “aggressive” truly means, because as it sits right now, we’re pretty tepid about EOS M.</p>
<p>We’re told Canon will introduce two new EF-M prime lenses in Q1 of 2016. Both of these lenses will be slightly upmarket in build and design when compared to the current crop of EF-M lenses.</p>
<p>No specifications were given at this time.</p>

Canon EOS M3 Review by Dustin Abbott

Hello, everyone. When I find the time I will be doing an abbreviated review for the site here, but if you are considering the M3 in the meantime, you can read my thorough review here:

http://bit.ly/1kdzrp8

I've tried to clearly detail both strengths and weaknesses for the system, along with a few tips to help get the most out of it.

EVF idea for DSLRs - Hot-shoe ad-don EVF compatibility

The idea is so simple that it probably has been brought up before. Simply give all new DSLRs compatibility with the addon EVF for the M3 and future higher end ones.
Admittedly it would look awkward, clunky and silly and you would want to showcase the feature first on a 1DXII. They can add it first to say the 80D, advertise it as for video in bright light or something like that, and after that make it standard for every DSLR.
I reckon they would sell heaps of EVFs, there is plenty to like about them and if people don't have to give up the OVFs even better.

24-105 lens error - Canada Repair?

My 24-105 has started to consistently show an error code (can't remember which one). All my other lenses work fine so I'm assuming it's a problem with the lens.

I took a look online at Canon CPS for Canada services which shows different levels of service. It's $100 a year which gets 20% off repairs and free shipping. The quote for one lens repair is about $260.

The single lens repair still seems to be the better deal since 20% off of $260 PLUS free shipping is less the annual $100 annual fee.

I'm just wondering if I'm missing something and if someone can speak to their experience with Canada repair services. I live in Vancouver.

Full Frame Mirrorless in the Works [CR2]

HTML:
<p>While Canon themselves have confirmed an “enthusiast” mirrorless camera will come from Canon eventually, no one is quite sure what that means.</p>
<p>We’re told that Canon is actively working on a full frame mirrorless camera, but that Canon may first announce a higher end APS-C sensor EOS M camera first. The full frame camera would retain a version of the EF-M mount we’re told, though it would likely require its own set of lenses due to image circle issues with the current crop of EF-M lenses.</p>
<p>No timeline has been given, but we expect Canon to become more aggressive in the mirrorless space in the coming 12-18 months.</p>
<p>I do wonder if all of this is being held back as they try to figure out how EF lenses fit in with mirrorless.</p>

Anyone compared the sensors: EOS M3 vs 7D MkII?

Hello all clever Canon Camera Users here!

A humble request of help from you here,
to inform me of the differences of two SENSORS in order
to make a more right purchase choice
between the 7DMkII or EOS M3
when
it comes to the overall image quality.

I am about to purchase either 7DMkII or EOS M3
to be used particularly for the APS-C (1.6x) benefits,
for all my EF-lenses
(Already have the EF-M to EF-ADAPTER
and also the old EOS M (Version 1 with 18MP and the old 7D)
So far I could not find a enlightning
comparison between the NEW sensors
in the 7DMKII and the EOS M3.

So has anyone here on CR compared these two sensors:
• EOS M3 vs• 7D MkII
when it comes to best
image quality?
All answers will be appreciated!

Wishing you all the Very Best!
Charl (Sweden)

Source for independend & neutral information?

Hi,

until a while ago I really enjoyed visiting dpreview.com

This has changed with all the Sony marketing (in my feeling) on that site.

Here's one thing I find especially troubling:
Looking at the comments section of http://www.dpreview.com/articles/3274812720/mirrorless-as-the-universal-mount-brian-smith-at-pix-2015?comment=2039396530 when logged in gives the first screenshot below.

When visiting the site anonymously I get a different picture (-> second screenshot):

So, what alternatives to dpreview are out there?

Regards,
Oliver

PS: How can I post inline images here?

Review sites going into hibernation?

General sites that used to be very active in reviewing lenses, such as Photozone.de and slrgear.com post only rarely nowadays. They are basically doing us a service so I suppose we can't complain too much. But, it is a pity that these good sites are running out of steam. ePhotozine is the most active and provides excellent reviews on a variety of products, and lenstip still tries hard. The first-rate TDP of course is comprehensive for Canon and third party lenses. DxOmark has become very disappointing. OK many wouldn't care as they don't trust DxO, but they are meant to be selling software customised for most lenses on most bodies and they still haven't posted data for many popular lenses, such as the Sigma 150-600s, and any lenses on the 5DS.

Best lens for a vacation -- can only choose one

All,

I'm off on a vaca before too long and thought I'd forego the usual bag full of gear for a simpler setup. I plan to travel with only one lens on my camera.

But if you only had to choose one lens for your camera for a week long trip, what would it be? I'm game to rent, so let's keep everything on the table.

Personal Considerations:

1) I'll bring my trusty 5D3.

2) Generally, on vaca, I'll keep it to touristy endeavors -- I shoot landscapes, candids, and occasional architecture and macro. I am not a birder, and I have no desire to lug a long tele around where we'll be.

3) I usually have to stick and move to keep up with my significant other, so dedicated, composed work is usually not on the table. I may stash my travel Gitzo tripod / ball head / L plate and ND grads, but I haven't made up my mind yet. If I did, I'd probably only get 1-2 chances to use it all week.

4) My destination is off the grid & tropical. It's absolutely going to rain where we're going, so a weather sealed lens is a must.

5) I'd prefer a not carry a super showy piece of kit like an Otus or white L lens. I'm unlikely to shoot street where we're going, but still, I don't want to go waving a howitzer around.

6) I'd prefer an AF lens. Without a proper focusing screen option on the 5D3, I'd just waste a large aperture Zeiss rental by stopping everything down to avoid missing the focus.

Personally, I'm leaning towards renting the new 35L II, but I am not married to the idea. The occasional macro + weather sealing + general range makes the 24-70 F/4L IS a very safe call, but again, I'm game to hear alternatives.

Advice appreciated, thx.

Wonderpana 11-24 front filtering solution is coming soon

11mm prime owners [cough] I mean 11-24L owners, rejoice!

On another forum, I was commenting about keeping my feet on the ground about an outrigger solution for the 11-24L covering all the way down to 11mm based on the Lee SW150 II vignetting on the widest FLs.

Turns out Wonderpana's stuff is big enough after all. See screencap below and smile. If you were pondering the Lee SW150 II for your 11-24L, you might want to reconsider that.

Sony Shows Off New High Sensitivity Sensor Called STARVIS

HTML:
Not to be outdone by Canon’s <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-me20f-sh-available-for-preorder/">4,560,000 ISO sensor equipped ME20F-SH camera</a>. Sony is showcasing a new high sensitivity sensors called STARVIS, which looks to be for surveillance applications, but I’d imagine such technology will make its way to other image sensors in Sony’s lineup.</p>
<blockquote><p>The STARVIS is back-illuminated pixel technology used in CMOS image sensors for surveillance camera applications. It features a sensitivity of 2000 mV or more per 1 µm2 (color product, when imaging with a 706 cd/m2 light source, F5.6 in 1 s accumulation equivalent), and realizes high picture quality in the visible-light and near infrared light regions.</p></blockquote>
<p>A video demonstration of the new sensors capabilities is available after the break.</p>

Canon Releases Q3 2015 Results

<p>By Sophie Knight</p>
<p><strong>TOKYO, Oct 27 (Reuters)</strong> – Japan’s Canon Inc said quarterly operating profit fell by a fifth as demand for digital cameras slumped and it spent more on developing new businesses, but it nudged up its full-year earnings estimates on a sharply weaker yen.</p>
<p>The consumer shift to smartphones for casual photo taking has pummelled demand for compact cameras, while the growing popularity of lighter mirrorless cameras has taken away market share from higher margin single-lens reflex cameras.</p>
<p>Operating profit for the July-September quarter came in at 71.8 billion yen ($665 million), not far off figures flagged by the Nikkei business daily earlier this month.</p>

13 Month Canon CarePAK offered free for new purchases

Cant seem to find if this was posted earlier so I'm going to put it out again. Canon has not widely advertised this. No fancy fliers in the boxes, no pop up ads when you register your new purchases online.

Starting October 11, 2015 through January 9th, 2016, Canon is offering a 13 month CarePak for free for select lens and body purchases from authorized dealers. This covers things like water damage, accidental damage, priority service, lemon replacements, etc.

I wouldnt have known about it until I saw it on another blog site.

The activation code is simply the items serial number.
