When is a thread too long?

I am just wondering if there is any kind of consensus as to when a thread is too long. I mean is there a point when it should be closed and a second (or third) thread on the same topic started?

The landscape gallery has well over two thousand replies on 149 pages. It seems to me this is waaaay too long. I was going to start a second gallery, but since I am a relative newcomer and not a senior forum member I thought it might seem presumptuous. Any thoughts?

Image Gallery - Tamron SP 35mm f/1.8 VC

I've spent some quality time with both Tamron primes over the past several weeks, including some direct comparisons between my beloved Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS and the Tamron 35mm f/1.8.

Anyway, here is some linkage for you.

8K in a 17-inch Display

Some of you said that the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium's 4K display was pointless (though I disagree), well now Japan Display has crammed 8K into a 17.3-inch display!!

Japan Display Inc. ("JDI") has announced the development of the world's first 17.3-inch high resolution (7,680(W) x RGB x 4,320(H) pixels), fast response (frame rate 120Hz) liquid crystal display (LCD) module, the same size as the standard monitor commonly used for the video image production.

70 - 200 IS II - Loose rear section

I just got back from a trip (involving many flights, vehicles, etc)..so lots of scope for vibration....

Was cleaning equipment and notice that the rear section (the section that the tripod collar mounts on), had some play.

On further investigation, a number of the small screws that seem to hold this section in place had come loose.

I was easily able to re-tighten these and everything seems OK now, but was wondering if

- anyone had similar issues?
- Is re-tightening ok - should I apply some Loctite?
- Shouldn't there have been Loctite anyway to stop this

Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II First Impressions

HTML:
LensRentals.com has published their first impressions with the brand new Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II.</p>
<p>Ryan Hill says:</p>
<blockquote><p>Surprisingly, the thing that impressed me most in my time with the Canon C300 Mark II had nothing to do with resolution, bit rate, or dynamic range. Digital video technology has improved so much in just the last few years that those specs, while enormously important, aren’t enough on their own to make me choose one camera over the other. There are simply so many great digital cinema cameras on the market right now that it takes a wholly original feature to make a camera stand out. In the case of the <a href="http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/video/cameras/canon/canon-eos-c300-mark-ii-dual-pixel-ef" target="_blank">Canon C300 Mark II</a>, that feature is autofocus. Sure, if possible, you’re always going to be better off with a dedicated focus puller. That’s not always an option, though, especially for solo operators like me who value mobility and speed over precision. On the documentary side of things, you can’t reset and try again if your focus is off, and that means having reliable continuous autofocus is invaluable.</p></blockquote>
<p>Below is some test footage that is graded and ungraded. You can read the rest of the article over at <a href="http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/10/canon-c300-mark-ii-first-impressions" target="_blank">LensRentals.com/Blog</a></p>

Improvements in menu and viewfinder info

With every new camera Canon seems to up its game in the area of menus and in some cases viewfinder info.

It would be nice if these "improvements" were available to older, but current, models. For example multiple my menu tabs, if possible viewfinder level indicator, and the latest from the 5DS is mirror lockup and then take the picture after 1/4, 1/2, .. second.

I can understand why Canon does not make these functions available to cameras that are not in production but it would be nice they would update the firmware for current cameras such as the 7D M2, 1Dx, 5D M3, ...

Frogfish 'Finds Nemo'

Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago I was able to capture a shot that I have been waiting to get ever since I started filming underwater. So I wanted to share here. This is truly a once in a lifetime shot, so I am excited to share it with you.

This beautiful frogfish, blends into the surrounding environment so well. He is a very patient hunter. Overall I was waiting for only about 10 minutes to get this behavior. After the attack, you can see that the fish is still alive and shakes the frogfishes body. This was all shot in Bali Indonesia.
Enjoy!

Vignetting: What does an f-stop really mean?

Bryan at The Digital Picture has vignetting results for most of his tested lenses. Every lens exhibits light fall-off, especially wide open. My question is, then, "How is vignetting accounted for (or not) when lens designers calculate maximum aperture?"

My intuition tells me that designers calculate at the center of the lens to determine the maximum aperture, and completely ignore if it loses 2-3 stops at the corners. Just curious. Thoughts?

Firmware: Canon EOS Rebel T5 v1.0.1

HTML:
Canon has released a minor firmware update for the EOS Rebel T5/1200D.</p>
<p>Firmware Version 1.0.1 incorporates the following fix:</p>
<ul>
<li>Fixes a phenomenon in which the captured image may exhibit uneven exposure when the camera is used with a TS-E 17mm f/4L or TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II lens which is shifted or tilted during shooting.</li>

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV to Come Before NAB [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV will be announced before NAB 2016 in April. How far in advance of the show, we’re not sure. We do note that WPPI is at the beginning of March 2016, while products are rarely announced for that show, WPPI (wedding photographers) is a big target market for the EOS 5D Mark IV.</p>
<p>We’re expecting a new Cinema EOS camera for NAB in April, so I don’t think a stills DSLR will get announced specifically for that show either.</p>
<p>While the EOS-1D X successor is expected first, we haven’t been told when that will be unleashed on the masses.</p>
<p>No specifications were given for the EOS 5D Mark IV at this time.</p>

5DS raw editing - SLOW

Is anyone else having a problem batch editing their 5DS raw files in Adobe Photoshop CS6. I even shoot medium size files now, but my photoshop is struggling to scroll through each preview. I'm working on a late 2013 Macbook Pro with core i7 and 16GB Ram.... shouldn't be a problem.

It's starting to make my 5DS my least used camera because it takes so long to batch edit any raws. CS6 is struggling to even open a preview. It happens after a few seconds or more, but that adds a while to an edit of 200 files.

Any suggestions about how to speed up photoshop?

solving 28mm f1.8 problem

I bought one of these 2nd hand earlier this year and have been reasonably happy with it.

One recurring issue I've had got me to pull the thing apart and clean it inside: Veiling glare.

Having done this (immensely carefully) and checked it out thoroughly having put it back together (yes the AF is fine, not mucked up the optics, the glare is still there, but reduced a little.

I'm using this on a crop camera and I've never felt the EW-63 hood did very much for the lens, so I've tried a "mega hood". I created a paper hood by attacking a whole sheet of a4 paper wrapped around the little hood as a former, then I cut bits off with scissors and hey presto the glare was completely gone unless I had the sun in the field of view

The hood is 3 inches long to the petal notches, and 4 inches long overall (this is JUST wide enough on a crop not to vignet), se below for a comparison with the EW-63

I'm now looking at the ET-63 which is 2.5 inches long.. has anyone tried this?.. does the "63" bit mean it will mechanically fit my lens?

Canon Working on New EF 70-200 L Lens [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that Canon is working on a new EF 70-200 lens, though the source didn’t know if it was going to be an f/2.8 or f/4 lens. The EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II was announced in 2010, while the EF 70-200 f/4L IS was announced in 2006. Going by that, the f/4 version is the likelier of the two to be replaced next.</p>
<p>The last EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS replacement only took 9 years, so it’s possible they’re already working on its replacement. It’s definitely a cash cow you’d like to continue to upgrade.</p>
<p>Some have noted that the EF 70-200 f/4L IS has <a href="http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup" target="_blank">disappeared from the Canon USA web site</a>, but that is a fairly common occurrence for whatever reason and has never signalled an imminent lens replacement as far as we can remember.</p>

Leica SL Launching With 3 New Autofocus Lenses

HTML:
The brand new Leica SL system will be announced on October 20, 2015, just in time for PhotoPlus in New York City. You can see the blurry new camera in the image above.</p>
<p>The system will be a new full frame lineup with autofocus lenses, and 3 new lenses will be launching alongside the camera body.</p>
<ul>
<li><span class="notranslate">Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 1: 2.8-4 / 24-90 mm ASPH.</span></li>
<li><span class="notranslate">Leica Apo-Vario-Elmarit-SL 1: 2.8-4 / 90-280 mm</span></li>
<li><span class="notranslate">Leica Summilux-SL 1: 1.4 / 50 mm ASPH.</span></li>
</ul>
<p>Inevitably this new system is going to be compared to Sony’s full frame mirrorless options. However, expect the Leica SL to cost at least twice as much as the Sony A7R II.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 Distagon T* Coming? [CR2]

HTML:
We thought a new Otus lens was coming a few weeks ago from Zeiss, but instead they launched the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/zeiss-announce-milvus-lens-lineup/">Milvus line of manual focus DSLR lenses</a>. In the past we’d been told that the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/new-zeiss-otus-coming-in-september-cr1/">next Otus would be a 25mm f/1.4</a>, but it looks like it may not be that wide.</p>
<p>New reports are saying the next Otus will be a 28mm /1.4 Distagon T*. This makes a lot of sense since there isn’t a 35mm option in the Otus lineup. We should see both a Nikon and Canon mount version announced some time in October.</p>

Blood Moon Eclipse Show Photos Here

I decided to try and take some photos of the eclipse. I found it difficult due to the very dim moon I finally settled on a 2 sec exposure at ISO 6400 and a f/8 equivalent aperture due to my 100-400mmL + 1.4X TC. Manually focused.

Its not sharp due to movement of the moon in 2 seconds, but it was a compromise setting.

This was after the eclipse, about 8:15

Identify this bird please

I've flown out to Memphis Tennessee to give a talk and brought my new Powershot G3 X in case anything flew by and for general photos. I can't identify this bird which I photographed by the banks of the Mississippi. It has the song of a warbler and looks like a flycatcher. The first is a close up and then they are progressively further away showing different features. Help please!
