Studio shots posted on DPReview for 5Ds/r Production bodies

Sorry if this is a duplicate post but I didn't see it anywhere. Dpreview has put up their studio shot from both production bodies:

http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canon-eos-5ds-sr/5

These show the 5Ds to be only minimally less sharp than the 5Ds r, at least to my eyes, and less Moiré pattern but not completely absent. Also compares against the Pentax 645Z and Nikon D810.

24-70 2.8ii focusing issues

Hey i recently purchased a 24-70 v2 and I shot two weddings with it this past weekend. As i edit i am starting to have a lot of out of focus images. When i say a lot i mean in regards to this lens and camera combo.
The first area was when the bridal party was retreating down the aisle post ceremony and the first images of them are in focus but it's like the focus locks and does not change as they get closer to me. Very frustrating, but i thought well it could be me and some of them looked like they also could have locked between the people and then ignored possible distractions.

Second is when the pastor is with the groom pre ceremony and standing still. The very first shot was out of focus and stayed that way till about 7 pictures later. This was not a burst shot these were all new button presses.
In these images below you can see it is clear as day on the bark yet the people are out of focus, once it achieves focus its beautiful.
I thought at first it was due to the fact i didn't set it up with focal, but then it will achieve focus perfectly other times.
I dont even know how to troubleshoot this and i am nearing the end of my return window.

THis happened enough that i actually installed the add on to see where it had acquired focus. I havent had this many out of focus photos since i started.
Also first time adding photos. no idea if this is the right way....

Canon 600mm f/4L IS II USM Lens and Backpack-Roller Bag

I am in the process of choosing a "medium size" backpack-roller bag for use to primarily transport a Canon 600mm f/4L IS II USM lens. The Tenba Roadie II Universal Hybrid Roller/Backpack represents one of the style bags I am considering.

As part of my pre-purchase research/due diligence, I forwarded the following question to a Canon Service Center for consideration.

"I am not asking for specific feedback on this bag. I would like to get your opinion on transporting this lens in a roller bag in general. Assuming the bag and lens are properly cushioned, are there any serious concerns about subjecting a lens like this to the sustained vibrations that a rolling roller bag is likely to create?"

The Service Center representative response:
"Thank you for contacting Canon support regarding transporting your EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM lens. I have not heard any feedback either way, but probably would be reluctant, myself."

I might add that in addition to generally very smooth surfaces associated with airport walkways, I would likely also want to use such a roller bag on semi-smooth surfaces such as cement & asphalt sidewalks and roads as well tiled surfaces that might have mortar gaps, etc.

The feedback from this Technical Support representative gives me reason to question a backpack-roller bag as a solution for my 600mm lens transportation needs. Any thoughts on the Canon rep feedback? And/or any thoughts about such roller bag vibrations affecting this particular lens and such a roller bag being appropriate?

Also, it would seem that one of the implications of the statement from the Canon Service rep is that they may not endorse the concept of the "big whites" being transported with roller bags.

Should I scrap the idea of a roller for my 600?

Sony A7s II - THE DSLR Killer?

Read this:

We have expectation that it will come with the improvement over few sections compared to its predecessor Sony Alpha 7S then it will definitely gain better response from the users.

Resolution – We expect that it will come with larger resolution (possibly 20MP) comparative to its predecessor‘s so that it can deliver high quality images with superior clarity and sharpness.

The AF system should be upgraded with Fast Hybrid AF system similar to AF System of Sony A7R II which uses 399 phase-detect points and 25 contrast-detect points for a speedy Fast Hybrid AF system which will offer accurate tracking with its higher AF points including 45% coverage along with 25 contrast-detect AF points for the improvement in the speed, accuracy and tracking performance of the system.

It is expected that the ISO sensitivity should be at least double or triple than its predecessor which is equivalent to 819200 or 1638400 , so that it allows to shoot clearly at very dull lightning conditions and can produce very sharp images of the fastest moving objects.

Introduction of 5-axis IS in A7S Series – Sony Alpha 7S II should come with Five-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization similar to Sony A7R II for vertical, horizontal, pitch, yaw, and roll movements. This helps the users to use any lens including adapted lenses for critical imaging without facing any blur due to camera shake. This system will compensate for approximately 4.5 stops of shutter speed for working with a huge variety of subjects.

We expect it should offer internal UHD 4K video recording at 30 or 24 fps, the Sony A7S was limited to external 4K recording only.

This text shown, is from this source: http://www.cameracomparisonreview.com/2015/06/21/sony-a-7sii-coming-soon/

I am a Canon user but I am waiting for the second generation of Sony A7S camera. They managed to triple the ISO sensitivity of the A7R camera and also managed increased resolution from 36 to 42.... by the implementation of BSI tech in FF sensor... A Sony a7s II with ISO 819200 would be crazy! What do you think? Do you think, that canon would compete with the 5D IV?

Also see Sony managers interview here - http://thenewcamera.com/sony-a7s-ii-aroma-coming-from-sony-managers-interview/

I want to buy a new camera this year and there are 3 cameras which would be in my list. The 5D IV, when it is as good a the a7r II with less mp and better ISO performance, the a7r II and the a7s II. What do you think? Which one to get? Would be the a7s II also a DSLR killer? ???

Mobile Photo Editing - What Do You All Use?

Since I spend so much time on the bus heading to my "day job," I'm interested in mobile editing options. I've used a laptop for years which has been good, but the battery life just sucks, overall. At home, I've got an amazing desktop setup for my primary editing station, and it's been perfect for me.

Now, since I'm getting ready to make a new laptop purchase, I'm debating my options. Creative Cloud, etc. has started to offer some interesting options, so I'd like to hear about any cool success stories or thoughts in this area.

Does anyone use the SurfacePro3 for editing? Should I just grab another laptop? With LR now using GPU's, I'll probably get a kick-ass gaming style laptop with a great screen. Any viable Tablet options out there? I own and love a Samsung Tab S 10.5" for showing photos to clients, but there doesn't seem to be anything significant available yet for LR or PS work on the tablet yet. Does the SurfacePro3 have better options for editing?

Any thoughts or ideas, even salacious upcoming tech rumours, would be appreciated.

Thanks In Advance!

Looking to upgrade my 5D3 with the 5D4 when it arrives.
However, recent posts have been suggesting pixel counts as low as 18mp. This makes me a little uncomfortable.
I am hoping for a 25-28mp sensor. As for DR, my clirents are more than happy with the levels in the 5D3 so a little improvement there would be a bonus. Am I alone in this?

Thanks for polling!

Canon's Full Frame Future [CR2]

HTML:
There’s a lot of random information out there about what Canon is going to do with it’s three long-in-the-tooth full frame cameras, the EOS 6D, EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X. One of our sources wants to shed a little bit of light on things, but even admits things are very “muddy” at the moment.</p>
<p><strong>EOS 5D Mark IV</strong>

This camera’s focus will be high ISO performance over resolution. The camera will use a new DIGIC processor and will share a version of a new flagship AF system. We had <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/02/possible-canon-eos-5d-mark-iv-spec-talk-cr2/" target="_blank">heard back in February</a> that an 18mp sensor was in testing in a camera body and that’s what could appear here. Are consumers willing to sacrifice 4mp for a few stops of ISO performance boost? I’m pretty sure they would be. I don’t believe the resolution of the APS-C offerings has any bearing on how the full frame sensor development will play out in the prosumer & professional markets.</p>
<p>4K? It depends on the day and who’s talking. I think it’s safe to say that 4K video recording appearing in the EOS 5D Mark IV is 50/50 at the moment. :)</p>
<p><strong>EOS 6D Mark II</strong>

This camera is said to be moving slightly “upmarket”, as it will get a better AF system and a few other consumer features like NFC. We’re also told this camera could have a higher resolution sensor than the EOS 5D Mark IV. The source couldn’t confirm this, but said all signs seemed to point that way. It was suggested that the “consumer” market still cares about resolution and that the EOS 6D Mark II could become the “do everything pretty well” DSLR in the lineup. No resolution number was given, but I can see a 24mp-28mp sensor.</p>
<p><strong>EOS-1D X Mark II</strong>

This camera is on its own and the goal is to improve ISO performance as well as “industry leading” dynamic range, we’re apparently going to see some C300 Mark II technology in this camera. It will have a brand new flagship AF system and an increased framerate. 4K video is still a possibility, as no one expects to see a follow-up to the EOS-1D C.</p>
<p>We’re not very close to an announcement for any of these cameras, so it’s very possible there’s a lot of misdirection and false information being floated around internally at Canon. I expect things to start getting a bit clearer towards the end of the summer and into early fall.</p>

Lens Purchase Advice for Junior Athletics

Hi,

I have a 7d MKII which I have recently purchased as an upgrade to a 500D and I have now been nominated as photographer for my daughters athletics club. My trusty Tamron 18-270 which I purchased years ago, doesn't do the 7D2 any justice and is very tired now. I also own a Sigma 150-500, which is great, but too long for most athletics use. So I was thinking, maybe a Sigma 120-300 F2.8 or Tamron 24-70 and Canon 70-200 F2.8 with maybe a 1.4TC. The pair works out similar money to the Sigma and will give me more versatility for other photography projects.

Any advice greatly received.

Tokina 24-70mm f/2.8 FX Lens Officially Announced & Coming in August

HTML:
Kenko Tokina USA, Inc. is excited to announce the new Tokina AT-X 24-70mm F/2.8 PRO FX lens designed for use with Canon and Nikon full-frame sensor DSLR cameras.</p>
<p>Tokina’s latest addition to its family gives full-frame photographers a 24mm wide-angle to 70mm moderate telephoto lens with a fast F/2.8 aperture at an affordable price.</p>
<p>The new groundbreaking proprietary optical design uses three precision molded all-glass aspherical lens elements to achieve excellent contrast, sharpness, and corrects for spherical aberrations. One of these elements is very special and difficult to manufacture. G09, is made from Super-Low Dispersion (SD) glass and is a large sized aspherical element.</p>
<p>These lens elements also yield even illumination across the whole image sensor.</p>
<p>The Tokina 24-70MM lens also uses three SD (super-low Dispersion, “FK01” and FK03”) glass elements in the rear groups to control chromatic aberrations.</p>
<p>All these specialized lens elements work in consort to yield maximum resolution to match the 50-megapixel DSLR cameras entering the market.</p>
<p>The fast constant F/2.8 aperture makes viewing and auto focusing possible in very low light situations while keeping some flexibility for setting the shutter speed.</p>
<p>In addition to excellent optics, the lens incorporates a fast moving SDM (Silent Drive-Module) motor to greatly reduce AF noise making it one of Tokina’s quickest and quietest auto-focusing lenses to date.</p>
<p>Tokina’s exclusive One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows the photographer to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring forward for AF and back toward the lens mount for manual focusing. The lens is also designed to stand up to the rigors of daily use by photographers in a wide variety of shooting conditions and environments.</p>

Venus Optics Announces the Laowa 15mm f/4 Wide-Angle 1:1 Macro Lens, the World’s Widest 1:1 Macro Le

HTML:
<strong>Anhui China, Jun 12, 2015</strong> – Venus Optics, the Chinese camera lenses manufacturer who had launched the world’s first 2:1 Macro Lens in last Sept, has just released the world’s widest Macro lens for full frame cameras, Laowa 15mm f/4 Wide-Angled 1:1 Macro Lens.</p>
<p>The new Laowa 15mm f/4 1:1 Macro lens is the first lens in the market which posseses a ultra wide angle of view and 1:1 Macro ability. This allows photographers from around the world to start experiencing the rather undeveloped field of ‘Wide Angle Macro Photography’ without using an extension tube. Macro Lenses currently in the market tends to have a mid to long focal length and it limits users to take very close-up shots on the insect or flowers, without showing much of the background details like its habitat or environment.</p>
<p>The new Laowa 15mm f/4 1:1 Macro lens features an ultra wide angle of view of 110 degrees with 1:1 maximum magnification. Photographers can focus very close to the subject and let the foreground dominates in the photo but at the same time, have the background telling viewers about where and how the subject lives. You picture will immdiately become very informative and intriguing.</p>

Canon 100-400mm II vs Sigma 150-600mm C

The Polish language site of Lenstip posted last night their review of the 100-400mm II http://www.optyczne.pl/357.1-Test_obiektywu-Test_Canon_EF_100-400_mm_f_4.5-5.6L_IS_II_USM.html

I have made a collage of their measured MTFs with those of the Sigma 150-600mm C. Some points worth noting are the consistency of the Canon across all focal lengths, and it is optimised close to the maximum. The IS of the Canon is about a stop better than those of the two versions of the Sigma.

A caveat. Lenstip get their lenses on loan from Canon or Sigma, and sample variation appears to be greater for Sigma from various reports. TDP site has the Canon better than the Sigma S at all overlapping focal lengths, and Bryan has compared two lenses of each he has purchased independently. Lenstip has the S marginally better at shorter focal lengths. Draw your own conclusions.

A Few Nikon D5 Specifications

HTML:
Nikon and Canon are both expected to update their flagship cameras in the next 6 months or so. Nikon with the D5 and Canon with the EOS-1D X Mark II.</p>
<p>While little is known at this point about what Canon will release, we’re seeing more leaks of potential specs for the Nikon D5.</p>

Optical Low Pass Filter Test Marketing

Don't you wish that Canon decided to do a test market on the Low-Pass Filter Effect Cancellation on crop bodies like say the 2008 50D or 2009 T1i / 500D?

Both bodies have a smaller pixel size of 4.7µm as compared to the D800E or D810's larger 4.87µm pixel size.

If it was too early why not start with the T6i,T6s / 750,760D with pixel size of 3.7µm.

Nikon already have bodies without Optical Low Pass Filters.

1.5x crop
2014 D3300 24.2MP 3.89 µm
2012 D3200 24.2MP 3.84 µm
2015 D5500 24.2MP 3.89 µm
2013 D5300 24.2MP 3.89 µm
2015 D7200 24.2MP 3.89 µm
2013 D7100 24.2MP 3.90 µm

Full Frame
2014 D810 36.3MP 4.87 µm
2012 D800E 36.3MP 4.87 µm

Here's to looking forward to Canon offering a 5D Mark IV or 1D X Mark II without an optical low pass filter.
