Point and Shoots?

It seems like most people on these forums use big DSLRs, myself included. But I'm wondering how many of you use Point-and-Shoot cameras on a regular basis? (I'm purposefully excluding mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras since they can deliver DSLR level image quality, but they still don't quite fit in a pocket).

I had a Panasonic Lumix ZS3, but I've decided to sell it. I often found myself carrying it instead of my T3i sometimes because it's convenient, but when I look back at the images they aren't that great for anything but web size viewing. The small sensor results in a wide depth of field, so none of the shots have good subject/background separation. If I zoom in at 100% there are awful JPEG artifacts even though I have it set for "fine" or whatever the highest quality is called. It would be considered medium quality at best using Photoshop settings. It's a step up from cell phone quality, but phones are catching up these days. I'm sure there compact cameras out there now with better image quality.

So I'm wondering if any of you use a point and shoot in some situations where a DSLR is too cumbersome?

New York and 4th of July fireworks.

Friends.
I am in NY and having a super time. Great place!
Am excited about 4th of July fireworks and want to know if any of you know the best 'spot' to be at with my 5d3 and 16-35 with a tripod. I asked a cab driver and he said that each year the fireworks are at different places. Is that true?

Any suggestions? Thank you.

Am attaching a photo of family with a friend next to nice wall painting.

The danger of high resolution and sharpness

I have just made a 6 image stitched panorama of the view from a house I´m renting, in a hill above Chania og Crete. I used my newly acquired 5DSR. The resulting image is about 270MP and the resolution and detail and sharpness and ... , whatever you´re after, is astonishing, fantastic, awesome, impressive, almost beyond belief ... etc.
I tried to export from LR on a format I could use on CR, but it refused to use "only" 4MP ::)

But then it struck me, what are we after?

One of my other passions in life is music. Many would probably call my an audiofile. At a certain point in my strive for the absolute sound, I realized that I was not listening to music anymore. I was totally consumed with resolution, dynamics, with, height, depth, sound stage, over harmonics, bass punch, instrument positioning, voice texture etc. etc. Until I one day realized; I have to re-learn how to listen to music. I will not tire you with how I did that, but I did. So today I have a fantastic hifi setup, where I enjoy lots of great music.

Photography is about to end up in a similar situation. We pixle peep and read test charts, we want resolution, we want dynamics, we want less noise, we want contrast, color, no CA etc. etc. But is that what a photograph is about?

The other day I went through some of my older images and I found one, shot with the 50mm f1.2L. Not the EF version, but the FD version. Shot on a Canon New F1 in 1987, with Kodachrome 25. If you held this photograph up, next to one shot with a 5DSR and the Otus 55/1.4, it would (technically) look like a poor image, shot by a technical imbecile. Resolution, edge sharpness and all the rest of it would end up in the dust. But the picture is still a great picture. Firstly because the composition is good and secondly because it has great light. (It is very private, so you can´t see it ;) )

So the question is; Are we losing track of why we are doing this, in all this technical progression? Are we losing our ability to see a good picture in our strive for technical perfection?

London at night

Hi all,

I've just returned from a European trip and spent a night out in London taking photos until 3:30 am. (The wife wasn't real happy about that). Anyway I thought I would post some pics on here from a very memorable evening.

Pertaining to the matter of trolls

<in my best John F. Kennedy imitation>

These are extraordinary times. And we face an extraordinary challenge. Our strength as well as our convictions have imposed upon this forum the role of leader in freedom's cause. No role in history could be more difficult or more important. We stand for freedom from trolls. That is our conviction for ourselves-that is our only commitment to others. No friend, no neutral and no adversary should think otherwise. We are not against any man or woman unless it is a troll. I am here to promote the freedom doctrine. …

I believe that this web community should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this year is out, of not responding to trolls and troll like posts.

No single forum policy in this period will be more impressive to our members, or more important to the long-term operations of this website; and none will be so difficult to accomplish.

Now this is a choice which this community must make, and I am confident that under the leadership of the moderators, that you will consider the matter carefully.

It is a most important decision that we make as a forum. But all of you have lived through the last few threads and have seen the significance of trolling and the disruption it causes, and no one can predict with certainty what the ultimate meaning will be.

We choose to ignore trolls and do the other things, not because it is easy, but because it is hard.

;D

But seriously, if you don't respond to a troll thread, it will age out. If you respond to a troll thread, it gets refreshed and stays on the page.

Trolls are like stray dogs. Once you start feeding them, you can't expect them to go away. ;)

Redrock Micro talks EOS 5D Mark II & Mad Max

HTML:
Redrock Micro has posted an article talking about the use of the EOS 5D Mark II in one of the summer’s best visual treats, George Miller’s Mad Max. If you haven’t seen the movie, go now!</p>
<p>Ten EOS 5D Mark II camera bodies were used by the stunt/action team and the lens of choice was the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II. Redrock Micro were the exclusive rig for all the EOS 5D Mark IIs used in the production</p>
<blockquote><p>For the rigging, we definitely see action cam style – the DSLR camera ops were well prepared to strap in to cars, on towers, pretty much anywhere they wanted a great action insert or angle of view that would otherwise be impractical or too time consuming to setup with an A or B camera (ARRI Alexa with those huge Panavision primo zooms). Rigs from Redrock Micro were exclusively used with the canon 5D MKII to fit this style, each slightly customized to each operator’s liking.</p></blockquote>
<p>Why the EOS 5D Mark II?</p>
<blockquote><p>A number of Canon 5Ds were used as crash cams during the action sequences – as “semi-disposable stunt cameras”. The DSLR was chosen as a proven work-horse crash-cam even though it was released way back in 2008. The 5Ds provide extra cut-away point of view angles during action sequences – the cutaways are so short you don’t notice the changes in image quality</p></blockquote>

Fast prime for Croped body advice (24-35mm)

Hi all,

All this talking about Sigma's new 24-35 F2 "zoom" reminded me how much I need a faster lens for low light situations. I have a 60D (but plan to move to full frame in a year or two) and my fastest lens is 50 1.8 II, which as you can imagine is too short for many situations ( moreover, the AF is horrible in low light). Mostly, I miss a fast lens in close dimly lit spaces (cafes, tight streets, etc...). I did tried to use old manual 28 F2.8 lenses adapted to EF (I have an EF-s screen to aid MF) but in dim, dynamic situations I really struggle with the focus (also, F2.8 is not that wide for a really dim light).

I am a very budget conscious so my options are limited at best to 500-600$ and must be an FF compatible for the future.

I'm pondering between Canons 24-28-35 IS options (35 is F2 of course). Also there is the new super cheap Yongnuo's 35mm F2 Canon clone which seems to be nice for the price (115$). I lean toward the 35 IS USM but wonder won't it be too tight for my needs. Is there that much difference (in low light) between F2.8 and F2, especially considering the new IS Canon put in them (I understand the stop motion factor but I will be shooting in many different situations so can't predict it)? Or should I just buy Yongnuo and play with it till I'll have a FF?

Any input from crop users (or any) of one of these lenses would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Roman

Yet another "what would you do" question

Hey all - hope all is well with you.

At work we have a recognition system that awards points for performance. You can redeem your points on an internal rewards webpage, which happens to have some canon gear. I've accumulated approximately 3650 points. Of what's available, this is what interests me:

70D - 3200 points
100mm f2.8L Macro - 3630 points
MR-14EXII flash - 1966 points
EF-S 17-55 f2.8 - 3206 points (I have one already - but could sell this one)
EF 28mm f2.8 IS USM - 1964 points (they had the 35f2 is, but has disappeared from the list)
EF 100 F2 - 1768 points
EF - 20mm f2.8 - 1925 points
Rokinon 14mm f2.8 - 1405 points
EF-S 18-135mm STM - 1965 points.

you can see from my signature what I already have. There is some appeal to the macro flash as it is something that I normally wouldn't buy, but since it would be free... And I've been wanting the 100 mm F2.8 L macro for some time too.

So what would you do? Even do nothing is a valid option.

Thanks!

Teardown: Canon EOS 5Ds

HTML:
Roger at <a href="http://www.lensrentals.com" target="_blank">LensRentals.com</a> figured it’d be a good time to take apart the brand new Canon EOS 5Ds. He was curious as to whether or not things had changed inside the camera, or if it was identical to the EOS 5D Mark III. He also notes areas where Canon has improved some of the design.</p>
<blockquote><p>Outside of the stuff we already know about the new Canon cameras, there were not many surprises looking inside, and the few surprises we had were positive. There was Canon’s usual very clean design and layout. There were incremental improvements in the engineering, like the separated I/O system, more robust tripod mount assembly, and improved inner tapes and shields. I have a little concern about the lens release pin, but it probably will not be an issue. After all, I’m known to be paranoid.</p></blockquote>
<p>On a side note, we received our EOS 5DS and and are looking forward to shooting with it this weekend.</p>

7D2 vs. 5D3 for indoor sports

Hey all,

Short version: the title pretty much sums it up.

Long version:
Out of the blue I've just scored a press pass/official photographer deal for the upcoming USA Weightlifting Youth National Championships. I'm concerned that my trusty 7D isn't quite going to be up to the task. So what I'm trying to decide is whether a 5D3 or a 7D2 is the way to go.

My wife is due for an upgrade and shoots weddings, which would favor the 5D3, but I shoot sports almost exclusively which favors the 7D2 (and yes, we share equipment), so that's a wash. The lighting for the event is likely going to be poor and with weightlifting being an extremely quick movement I will need all the shutter speed I can get, so I need good high ISO. However, in the same vein, being a quick movement I could certainly make use of the FPS.

So the question is, how much high ISO difference between the two, and for this event (and indoor sports in general) do which do you favor and why? And if you're feeling talkative, throw some lens thoughts in there as well, as I'm not sure where the press platform is relative to the lifting platform and am a little light on wider lenses. And if after that you still feeling like sharing, I could use a new tripod for this event, but since I almost never use one I don't want to throw a lot of funds at it.

Thanks!

Current lens selection is 70-200L IS, the 85 1.8, 24-105 4.0L, the nifty 50, and a Tamron 17-55 for crop bodies.

5Ds R Err 20

I got an Err 20 with my 5DS R.

It occurs when I try shooting stills after taking video. This happened during a party.

I was able to resolve it the first time by reinserting the battery, as stated in the screen.

On the second go I simply turned off then turned on the camera.

Although I do not expect this camera to be used primarily to do videos with I hope it gets resolved through future firmware.

DxO Introduces Revolutionary DSLR-Quality Camera That Attaches Directly to the iPhone®

HTML:
<strong>The pocket-sized DxO ONE features a 20.2 MP 1-inch sensor and a high-end f/1.8 lens</strong></p>
<p>San Francisco, California and Paris, France—June 18, 2015—DxO, a world leader in digital imaging technologies, today introduced the DxO ONE, a revolutionary camera that delivers DSLR image quality in an extremely compact size. At 3.8 oz (108 g) and 2.65” (6.9 cm) tall, the DxO ONE is so small that it easily fits in a pocket, yet it features an ultra-high quality f/1.8, 32mm equivalent aspherical lens with a variable 6- blade iris and a 1-inch 20.2MP CMOS BSI sensor capable of capturing high-resolution images even in very low light.</p>
<p>Made of high-grade aluminum, the DxO ONE is a premium camera that has been engineered with the iPhone and iPad® in mind: it attaches via the LightningTM connector, turning the beautiful iPhone display into the camera’s viewfinder. The camera swivels ±60°, enabling creative perspectives.</p>
<p>The DxO ONE achieves a DxOMark Sensor Score of 70, and up to 85 when using the SuperRAWTM technology (described below), on par with full frame DSLRs and dramatically higher than any smartphone. DxOMark is the industry-standard protocol for camera and lens image quality assessment, used throughout the camera industry and photography press.</p>
<p>“The image quality of the DxO ONE is stunning,” said Jerome Meniere, CEO and founder of DxO. “It’s possible to shoot crystal-clear images under moonlight, which is incredible for a camera this small. The shallow depth of field and bokeh of the lens at f/1.8 is absolutely perfect for portrait photography.”</p>

5DSr great but wish mRAW was an viable option

Got the 5DSr a couple days ago and I love it. In terms of IQ it blows the doors off the 5D3, 1DX, & 6D (which I have all). The 1DX has a little better noise, but the details of the 5DSr almost allow post processing to make up for it. The 5D3 doesn't even compare in any category related to the sensor. ISO 6400 on the 5DSr is nice and works great for my purposes (weddings & portraits).

I have no issues taking 200mm images with sharp detail hand held at 1/100 with the 70-200 IS (as long as my technique is solid). I am very happy about that because I was a little nervous with everyone saying a tripod was absolutely necessary.

I really wish the mRAW was a viable option to me and am a little disappointed mRAW is so terrible. Is a wedging photographer I would really like to go between 28mp and 50mp to help with file size but a few quick tests showed there is a lot more missing from a mRAW than resolution. Here is a quick test, original on the left, RAW in the middle, and mRAW on the right. Why are the colors so terrible in the shadows? I underexposed the image on purpose and processed it more than I would have if the image served more of a purpose than just a test, but look at the wheel well? The colors in the shadows turned green. What in the world happened? All of the settings were taken the same and all of the post processing sections were the same too.

Sigma 24-35 f/2 - released tomorrow? UPDATE: Digicame has pictures

Photo Rumors is more of an aggregator than a site that cultivates its own leads. But when they have a title of "This is the new [Product]" it's 100% correct as it's just a repost of legit leaked shots. Think of it as a CR3.

Which is why this one is goofy:
http://photorumors.com/2015/06/18/new-sigma-24-35mm-f2-full-frame-lens-to-be-announced-tomorrow/

...as they never say "the end is nigh", they only say "the end is here". This isn't like them at all, so I have to file this one under 'not buying it', but I thought I'd pass it along.

And if they end up making this lens instead of the 24-50 f/2 we heard about some time ago, I will be quite sad.
