Hasselblad to Launch New Camera Based on A7R

Hasselblad continues down the road of “who the heck is making these product decisions?”</p>
<p>Apparently we’re going to see a new, and grossly overpriced version of Sony’s A7R, not the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/06/sonys-new-%CE%B17r-ii-camera-delivers-innovative-imaging-experience-with-worlds-first-back-illuminated-35mm-full-frame-sensor/" target="_blank">A7R II that was just announced</a>, but the original A7R.</p>

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Talk [CR1]

HTML:
There isn’t a lot coming out of the rumor mill currently. This generally means there is nothing significant coming in the near future, which isn’t a surprise, as summer is generally a slow time of year for product launches.</p>
<p>The most highly anticipated product from Canon is the EOS 5D Mark IV and we’re only getting small bits of information, below is list of the latest information we’ve heard about the camera, not much is new outside of the ship date.</p>
<ul>
<li>The EOS 5D Mark IV will come after the EOS-1D X Mark II announcement.</li>
<li>Q1 of 2016 is the ship time Canon is aiming for.</li>
<li>EOS 5D Mark IV will have 4K.</li>
<li>New Speedlite metering system coming with the EOS-1D X Mark II & EOS 5D Mark IV.</li>
<li>Sensors ranging from 18mp to 28mp are in testing for full frame cameras.</li>
<li>EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R a test for “two model viability”, a model split of the EOS 5D Mark IV still possible. (Though, we think unlikely)</li>
<li>New DIGIC processor</li>
</ul>
<p>The EOS C300 Mark II starts shipping in September, so I doubt we’ll see a 4k DSLR launching at the same time.</p>
<p>There is also the Canon EXPO in September, which might give us some clues about the future of the DSLR.</p>
<p>There has been some suggestions of an NAB launch in April for the EOS 5D Mark IV, but I don’t see that happened as I suspect a new Cinema EOS camera will come for that show. While it will have a lot of video oriented features, it’s still considered stills camera.</p>
<p>Is an EOS 5D C possible?</p>
<p>Anything’s possible, but we still put it as unlikely.</p>

Just a few weeks ago people here and elsewhere were still discussing 4K, but in the past few days I have read more and more online reports about 8K videos appearing on YouTube!

Here is one such video:

https://youtu.be/RNdHaeBhT9Q

(note that in YT settings I can only go up to 4K (2160), I presume because my connection is not fast enough and my monitor is only 1920x1080.

Crazy stuff, but it's coming, albeit only if you have the right hardware and internet connection!

So which of the main manufacturers, Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Samsung etc do you reckon will be first to add 8K to one of their new devices?!

It does not really matter whether we need this tech or not, it's here and coming - faster than we think.

Canon 50mm 1.8 STM Review plus 8GB+ RAW files

Hey guys, I've been using the Canon 50 STM since it came out, and I think it's decent enough to replace the 50 1.8 II for sure.

It has great build quality and AF. That said I think I still prefer the Canon 40 2.8 for travel and landscape stuff.

Review: http://breakthrough.photography/canon-50mm-1-8-stm-review-hands-on/
Image Gallery: http://breakthrough.photography/canon-50mm-1-8-stm-image-gallery/

I was also curious to see what the performance of the new Canon 50mm 1.8 STM was like compared to my FD and FL 50 1.8 lenses, so I put that in there too. Having shot this with my modified-IR 5D, it's also a very good IR performer with virtually zero cone overexposure for infrared.

The real problem with Canon sensor technology?

Everyone is raving about the BSI sensor on the A7r ii; whilst it is yet another visible step forwards in Sony sensor technology, I don't think that the much vaulted BSI is really such a game changer. It's been said by others before, but the fill factor advantage isn't nearly as important on full frame -certainly not the 2 stops Sony marketing would have you believe. Nevertheless, the chance to use a high-res Exmor sensor with decent AF on an EF mount adapter and IBIS (yet to be independently confirmed) is very tempting if you are already considering the 5DS(R).

We keep thinking that Canon will catch up with "the next EOS body" and getting disappointed when performance fall short of our hopes. My concern is that Canon will always be behind the curve because they simply don't produce enough sensors to justify the level of R&D and process updates that Sony (or even Samsung) can invest in. Last year Canon sold fewer than 6.5 million DSLRs1 (i.e. cameras that utilize their own sensors) compared to 74.5 million2 iPhones (using Sony sensors) in just the last quarter of 2014.

It is the needs of small sensors that are driving the R&D efforts of the chip makers these days and Canon simply isn't in that game.

Speculate on 5Ds/5DsR dxomark sharpness score 'effective megapixels'

So will this new sensor actually be able to resolve close to 50 megapixels of detail?
Let's take a look at all of the tested Canon and Nikon sensors to date - megapixels vs 'sharpness score' on the best lens available for Canon & Nikon cameras: Carl Zeiss Otus 85mm
Camera name : sensor resolution : dxomark sharpness score 'effective megapixels'

I realize that the dxomark sharpness score is not a perfect test and that we should probably look at the results with a margin of error of about +- 1 megapixel (at least this is my opinion).

If we multiply the D800 and D800E sharpness score by 1.4 to get from 36 to 50 megapixels, then we could theoretically get 40 and 49 effective megapixels for the 5Ds and 5DsR if Canon does as good as Nikon - and if we are not running into lens limitations.
What is your guess ? :)

How to remove a scratch from top LCD on 1DX

I've got a small scratch on the top LCD of my 1DX. I've seen a video of polishing out the face of the watch with Colgate toothpaste to remove all the scratches.

Has anyone attempted this on a LCD with toothpaste or another polish?

I'm going to sell my 1DX soon and this is the only minute flaw I can see. It bothers me just knowing it's there.

Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated.

Post your Panoramics!

I'm no pano master, but I occasionally dabble in some stitching.

This is a crop from a 13-shot (vertical) stitch of Denali and the Alaska range. All shots were at 200mm, f/11. I stitched them with auto-pano giga.

Great place to shoot, stupid easy. Just pull into the parking lot and walk 5 minutes!

Sony RX100Mk4 and RX10Mk2 Full HD 1000FPS?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1159880-REG/sony_dsc_rx10_mark_2_digital.html#Specification

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1159879-REG/sony_dsc_rx100_mark_4_digital.html

Those are some pretty tantalizing specs just for the slo-mo capability.

We'll have to see if they use frame skipping or some such nonsense to get the highest framerate (e.g. Nikon 1 series), but if it's real these cameras are a bargain.
And it pains me to think that these could have gone so much faster at lower resolutions, but they don't seem to list any speeds faster than 1000fps.

What... WHAT will Canon now do?

After this release from the new Sony a7R II... What... WHAT WILL CANON DO?
I just found a post a few minutes ago on a newspage:

Waaaake up Canon! I really don’t want to part with all my Canon glass and start over with another brand but 5D4 is last chance in my book…nothing has really happened since 5D2 in 2008. 2008! TWO THOUSAND AND EIGHT!
Sony is just mutilating them at this point. Canon still think they can get the enthusiast market into their pro line of cameras or what on Earth is going on?

And he is totally right. Canon stays behind Video, DR, ISO Performance and Features. Other Companys like Sony trys to be the best and make fantastic cameras. Canan just want to make profit out of us.

Sure Canon, you have many lenses, very really good lenses. But you don't know what the people need and what they are willing to pay for.

But to wait for a holy grail 5D4 to be even close to SONY or Panasonic for that matter is waist of time.
…Look at the history and you will know the future :)
Sony is throwing blows every direction, the funny part is that they are landing.

I don't think that Canon will be close to a say a7R II, with it's 5D4. Not, when they put up something like the 5DS R. I'm a Canon user by the way and have a few lenses which are simply phantastic. But when I see other releases... when I see what is possible... and then... I see what Canon offers... well... nothing to say though.

I see many users switching to other companys with better (technical) cameras in the next time. Sure, Canon is good, but why spend in an obsolete system which lacks in performance and other things? What do you think about this? What do you hope from Canon? Are you going to switch? :-[

Sensitivity (or other) gains from BSI?

What kind of differences can one legitimately expect from a BSI sensor? Is circuitry generally large enough that having it on the front makes a significant impact on light-gathering capabilities?

Are we prohibited from discussing the A7R2? My previous thread was deleted, but perhaps because I just posted a press release with an itchy posting finger. I went back to add to this question, but it was gone. If they've really fixed the shutter (electronic 1st curtain) and BSI makes a real difference, I may not take delivery of my 5DS and sell my A7R.

Thoughts?

Come on 5DS-R !!!

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm very excited about what the 5DS-R has to offer. I can't remember being this excited since the 5D3 was released. I ordered the 5DS-R on the first night it was released. (Yeah, GAS!)

I've been very pleased with my 5D3 and 1DX but I've also added Sony's A7R which uses my Canon and Zeiss glass. The difference in resolution between the 36MP Sony and my Canon bodies is noticeable in large prints.

That said, Sony just now released a new A7R-II with a 42MP CMOS sensor with 5-axis stabilization and 4K video. Interesting to see how that compares to the new 5DS + 5DS-R.

Interesting also will be the DR between these two camera systems.

<p><strong>NEW YORK, Jun. 10, 2015 –</strong> Sony – a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer<span class="green">1</span> – has today announced two of the most advanced, versatile Cyber-shot cameras ever to come to market, the compact RX100 IV (model DSC-RX100M4) and high-zoom RX10 II (model DSC-RX10M2) cameras.</p>
<p>The two new models both feature the world’s first 1.0″ type stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor<span class="green">2</span> with advanced signal processing and an attached DRAM memory chip. The high speed signal processing and DRAM memory chip work together to enable more than 5x faster readout of image data<span class="green">3</span> and are responsible for a variety of standout features that have previously been available in only a select few professional-level video cameras. These impressive capabilities include 40x super slow motion video capture at up to 960 fps<span class="green">4</span>,<span class="green">5</span>, an ultra-fast Anti-Distortion Shutter with a maximum speed of 1/32000 second, high resolution 4K movie shooting<span class="green">6</span> and more.</p>
<p>“Utilizing Sony’s decades of expertise in digital imaging, we’ve made it possible for everyday customers to enjoy a professional imaging experience with the new RX100 IV and RX10 II cameras. With the power of the world’s first 1.0-type Stacked CMOS sensor packed into a compact, portable body, these new cameras bring the excitement and creativity of high frame rate shooting, 4K recording and a variety of other pro-quality features to a whole new audience.”said Kimio Maki, Senior General Manager of Digital Imaging Business Group for Sony Corporation.</p>
<p>Kelly Davis, Vice President of Digital Imaging for Sony North America, added “The new RX100 IV and RX10 II models make a strong statement for Sony, as they break through all existing boundaries of compact cameras and will allow professionals, hobbyists and enthusiasts to capture images and video that they never before thought were possible.”</p>

<p><strong>Up to 40x Super Slow Motion Shooting</strong>

A first for Sony consumer cameras, the new RX100 IV and RX10 II both have the ability to record super slow-motion video at up to 40x slower than the standard rate, allowing users to capture and replay fleeting moments of action with incredible detail, resolution and clarity.</p>
<p>Prior to shooting, users will have the ability to choose among 960fps, 480fps and 240 fps frame rates and among 60p, 30p and 24p playback formats<span class="green">4</span>,<span class="green">5</span> to optimize the recording to fit the speed of the moving subject, with the option to use the movie record button as a ‘start trigger’ to begin recording once button is pressed or ‘end trigger’ to record footage up until the button is pressed. The ‘end trigger’ mode lets shooting begin 2 to 4 seconds before the movie button is pressed, enabling shooters to capture the decisive moment with much more consistency and accuracy. For reference, two seconds of movie footage shot at 960 fps and 24p would take about 80 seconds to play back.</p>
<p><strong>High Speed Shutter, High Speed Shooting</strong>

The impressive speed and power of the 1.0″ type stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor with an attached DRAM chip allows the new RX100IV and RX10 II to perform exceptionally well while capturing fast-moving subjects. Specifically, it’s fast processing capability results in continuous speeds at up to 16 fps on the RX100 IV and up to 14 fps on the RX10 II for an extended period of time.</p>
<p>Additionally, the ultra-fast readout of the image sensor is responsible for the high speed Anti-Distortion Shutter (maximum speed of 1/32000 second), which allow the new cameras to capture sharp, crystal clear images with a wide open aperture at brightness levels up to EV197. It also minimizes the “rolling shutter” effect commonly experienced with fast moving subjects. This allows photographers and videographers to capture beautiful content with sharply focused subjects and defocused backgrounds under some of the most difficult, bright lighting conditions.</p>
<p><strong>High Precision Direct 4K Movie Recording</strong>

The new RX100IV and RX10 II models are the first Cyber-shot cameras to offer the advantages of 4K (QFHD 3840×2160) movie recording<span class="green">6</span>. The cameras utilize full pixel readout without pixel binning to ensure that all the finer details of 4K video are captured with minimal moire and ‘jaggies’. These high-quality results are achieved through use of the XAVC S codec, which records video at a high data rate of 100 Mbps during 4K recording and 50 Mbps during full HD shooting<span class="green">6</span>.</p>
<p>The capacity for shooting 4K differs slightly on each of the two cameras, as the more professionally styled RX10 II can shoot 4K video at extended lengths (up to 29 minutes in the US), while the more casual, pocket-friendly RX100 IV can shoot 4K clips at up to about 5 minutes in length. Additional professional caliber video features on both of the new cameras include Picture Profile, S-Log2/S-Gamut, and more.

Both cameras also have advanced dual video recording functionality, allowing shooters to capture 16.8 MP still images during 4K video recording in any of 11 different composition patterns simply by pressing the shutter button.</p>
<p><strong>Versatility in Design, High Speed AF</strong>

The new RX100 IV maintains the compact, pocket-sized design of the RX100 family, and has a ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm (35mm equivalent) F1.8-F2.8 lens, while the new RX10 II maintains the same body design as the original RX10 and has a ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200mm (35mm equivalent) F2.8 lens.

Each of the cameras is equipped with a new high-contrast XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ with approximately 2.35 million dots of resolution, ensuring true-to-life image preview and playback functionality. The RX100 IV maintains the convenient retractable EVF with ZEISS® T* coating from the RX100 III model that debuted last year.</p>
<p>Both of the two new models feature an upgraded Fast Intelligent AF system that enables high-speed, high-precision contrast detection of a moving subject in as little as 0.09 seconds8. Sony’s proprietary AF algorithm allows them to recognize and lock-in on a subject with a simple half-press of the shutter button at a much more efficient rate compared to previous models. The new cameras are also Wi-Fi® and NFC™ compatible and can access Sony’s growing range of PlayMemories Camera Applications. Learn more at www.sony.net/pmca.</p>
<p>Aesthetically, both of the new models feature a variety of customizable controls and buttons to fit any shooter’s style. The RX10 II adds dust and moisture resistance as well.</p>
<p>There is also a new stylish soft carrying case for, model LCS-RXG, that has been introduced. Made of quality natural leather and available in brown and black colors, it is an ideal complement to the sleek designs of all the RX100 series cameras including the new RX100 IV model.</p>
