Largest softbox size to use with 600 EX-RT?

Hi guys! I currently use on-camera 600 EX-RT with Gary Fong lightsphere, which works just fine for taking indoor and outdoor portraits. But I've finally decided to build up my off-camera outdoor lighting kit. I mostly take portraits of a single person, not a group of people. The question I have is what the right size of a softbox for this kind of portraits I should choose? I know the larger the size of a softbox, the more diffuse and even lighting is, but is there a softbox size that limits potential of 600 EX-RT? Currently, I'm choosing between 54x72" Chimera Super Pro Plus softbox and 69" Elinchrom Rotalux Octa Softbox, and I'll have Avenger C-Stand Grip Arm Kit to hold the softbox. Are these softboxes too large for a single person and for 600 EX-RT?

Thank you for your time to read my post.

Thoughts on L lenses and the 24-70 2.8 II

I finally purchased a 24-70 2.8 L II and did my usual obsessive-compulsive autofocus accuracy test before taking it out in the field (or into the boudoir as the case may be.)

As with all my L lenses, the autofocus is perfect. No AFMA needed, no inconsistency. Also, very fast! No clicking noise from the zoom ring.

When I look back on all the problems I had with autofocus accuracy in the past, I find myself wishing that I'd spent the money on L lenses from the beginning. I think the 5D3 deserves some of the credit too.

BTW, the price on this lens is getting pretty reasonable. I paid 1729 USD through the excellent street price program: http://www.canonpricewatch.com/street-prices/ and I will get an additional 100 USD back via the Canon rebate program. $1629 is a fair price for this lens, I think.

It's still a very heavy lens if you have to hand hold it for long periods. I'm going to be using a monopod or tripod more in the future, I suspect.

Canon ST-E3-RT Speedlight Controller

I am looking (not finding) a firmware update for the ST-E3-RT controller. My hope is that Canon has allowed the controller to use the 600 RT flash in 2nd curtain sync. I would think that for 1000.00 dollars US you would be able to have some creative capabilities with the system.
Is it possible to use 2nd curtain sync using the ST-E3-RT controller with the 600RT flashes?
I cant find any way to access the feature other than having the flash on the camera body.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II AF Issues

HTML:
<p>We’re told by a couple of people that Canon has internally acknowledged an autofocus issue with the EOS 7D Mark II. No official announcement will be made by Canon until they determine whether or not the issue can be resolved with a firmware update or if it will require the camera to visit a service center. All signs point to the former, but the issue has yet to be fully resolved.</p>
<p>There was no mention whether or not the AF issue affects all cameras, and we don’t want to speculate on this either.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

EVF for Rebels?

Another thread asked whether Canon is heading in a new direction, by expanding the xxxD (Rebel) series and the xD (professional) series, and phasing out the xxD (prosumer enthusiast) series.

I would go one stage further. I think the Rebel DSLRs will before long be phased out and replaced with mirrorless cameras that use EF-S lenses (possibly via an adaptor). The new SL2 could well be the first in that series.

That way Canon will have 2 very clearly defined markets - entry level users up to prosumer enthusiasts would all have lightweight mirrorless bodies and EVFs, while pros and semi-pros would have FF and APS-C DSLRs with optical viewfinders and larger bodies with Canon's standard superb ergonomics.

Vincent Laforet Takes Project AIR to Europe

New Superzoom Development? [CR1]

HTML:
An unknown source has told us that Canon is actively working to develop a superzoom to replace the EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L IS. This is a lens that is rarely spoken about and I can’t remember a time when I’ve actually seen one in use. It’s big and weighs a lot (3.67lbs) and <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/319784-USA/Canon_9322A002AA_28_300mm_f_3_5_5_6L_IS_USM.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">costs around $2500</a>.</p>
<p>We were told that the goal of any such lens would be a significant weight reduction and to make the lens wider, possibly to 24mm. Is it possible that diffractive optics could cure the weight issue? Weight could be definitely be reduced, but I’d have a hard time believing cost would be.</p>
<p>I wouldn’t normally post this sort of thing without digging a little further, but it might be a lens worth talking about. As some of you may know, I own a rental company and we do not stock the EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L IS, as I think we’ve have 1 or 2 requests for it in 4 years.</p>
<p>Is an “L/DO” superzoom something photographers want? What would it take feature wise for you to purchase one of these. Is there a cost ceiling? <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=26293.0" target="_blank">Sound off in our forum</a>.</p>

Patent: EF-S 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS

HTML:
<p>A new patent for the EF-S 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 optical formula has appeared. Perhaps it may be an update to the current lens to give it a stepping motor (STM).</p>
<p>That said, the current lens is very good for what it is, and probably benefits from USM on a camera such as the EOS 7D Mark II.</p>

Canon EF 14mm F2.8 MKII - Advice Needed

Hello all,

drawing from the experience and knowledge of others can anyone tell me if the above lens is a good choice for landscape image? I primarily shoot wildlife but am finding myself capturing the odd scenery and surroundings image during my travels. Early next month I plan to travel to Matchu Pitchu and am considering the EF 14mm MKII. I've never shot that wide of an angle lens and will it be too "fish eye" for landscapes? Also my previous lens was a 17-40mm but I got some vignetting with my 5D2 and 1DX using that so I sold it. I'm wondering if the 14mm will be worse?

1Dx and tracking runners running towards you

Hey group,

I have gotten by quite well with the 400 lens and tracking athletes, EXCEPT one area I haven't really figured out yet completely. When I shoot soccer or volleyball or football, pretty much all of my photos are in sharp focus even at f/2.8 on a 400mm lens. The only variability I'm getting is during track and field tracking runners straight at me. It looks to me, in reviewing photos, the runner runs out of the DOF (maybe the first one is in focus but the camera doesn't track towards me and the focus area stays back where it was). Sometimes it can't even start sharply on the athlete and I have to wait until the runner gets closer.

Shooting sideways, or discus, or shot put, the focus is right on so I don't think it's necessarily an AFMA issue. I just don't believe it is tracking optimally. My current settings are Case 4 and everything else is default.

Has anyone had any trouble with this and have had to optimize the AF system to do it? I thought about changing to Case 1 and to make sure I'm using BBF and just hold it down on the athlete while I'm bursting, but I'm not sure. Saturday I was shooting at 1/3200s, f/3.2, ISO 200 and got everything sharp for field events, but when shooting runners low to the ground down the home stretch I missed quite a few, mainly the farther away ones. However, I can shoot a hammer thrower 70 yards away at f/3.2 and the focus is very accurate.

Again, I've been able to get the photos I need, but it would be nice to get them all in focus. Thanks for reading!

The QuantumFilm Image Sensor

HTML:
<p>QuantumFilm is a photosensitive layer that relies on InVisage’s newly invented class of materials to absorb light; specifically, the new material is made up of quantum dots, nanoparticles so small that, once they are synthesized, they can be dispersed to form a grid. Just like paint, this dispersion of solid materials can be coated onto a substrate and allowed to dry.</p>
<p>The unprecedented light sensitivity and customizability of QuantumFilm set InVisage’s image sensor apart from traditional CMOS image sensors. Conventional sensors rely on a photosensitive layer made of silicon that also incorporates the circuitry necessary to read the electric output from the detected photons, as well as barriers isolating each pixel in order to prevent crosstalk. This means both less room for light sensing and less room for electric storage. <span class="s1">Invisage has designed an innovative image sensor architecture with a dedicated QuantumFilm layer in order to maximize light sensing capability</span>.</p>
<p>The above drawing shows a cross section of QuantumFilm pixels. Light passes through the color filter array, to be detected by the quantum dots in the QuantumFilm layer. The metal wiring made of silicon is the sensor’s electrical circuitry.  The higher positioning of the photosensitive layer allows the QuantumFilm pixel to detect more photons, store more electrons, and reproduce colors more accurately—all with a thinner camera module.</p>

VSGO sensor cleaning kits - thoughts?

Hi fellow shutterbugs,

Just wondering has anyone tried out VSGO sensor clenaing kits? I bought a FF sensor cleaning kit off ebay, after reading some decent reviews - however i've been using the more well known sensor swabs, but for the price, i thought i might look at an alternative.

If anyone has tried out a brand like VSGO can you post a brief review?

thank you!

The frustrations and joys of a 5DmkIII in the same picture

I'm sure this is new to absolutely no-one but I recently came across an example from my own library that illustrates how Canon can be so good and so bad...within the same picture.

Attached are crops from a picture taken at ISO 100, f9, 1/200 with a 100mm macro. The good part is the incredible detail and sharpness on the in-focus, well-lit areas. The less good part is the obvious noise and banding at base ISO in the darker areas. Pushing the EV or shadows by any amount whatsoever results in truly horrific noise. The crop of the dark area here is with absolutely no adjustments applied in RAW. I have included the final photo for reasons of vanity.

Despite this example, I still love my Canon and it remains my go-to system, even though I also own and love my Sony a7r.

ISO and long exposure issues:5Dmkiii

Hello all,
I just purchased a 5Dmkiii, as an upgrade from a 7D. I tried doing my first long exposure night shot last night and came across some peculiar noise issues. If you take a look at the attached raw file, marked GWB.cr2, you will see there is significant rgb "snow" in the image. Some places in particular show pixels that seem to be stuck at 100% of their respective color values. I know the 5D is a noisy camera but, I expected it to be better than the 7D I came from. I've never seen this sort of issue with the 7D sensor, and I've taken quite a few long exposures at ISOs between 400 and 1000.

To investigate further, I took two shots with the lens cap on, for 450 seconds. As such, the exposure time is the same for the test shots as for the shot of the bridge in the GWB.cr2 file. One is at ISO100 and the other is at ISO800 (as you can see from the file names). The ISO100 file looks clean but the ISO800 file looks awful.

Just for comparison purposes, I took a shorter (30s) exposure at ISO800, with the lens cap on. The resulting image showed similar issues although, not to the same extent as in the attached pictures taken at ISO800. Short exposure images taken at higher ISOs, including ISO25600 do not show such behavior. They clean up quite well, in my opinion. To take the comparison 1 step further, I turned high ISO noise reduction on and tried again. The resulting body-cap-on images looked far, far less noisy. As such, it seems to be an issue that is positively correlated with high ISO, long exposure and disabled high ISO noise reduction, together.

Is this normal? I'm worried the camera sensor is malfunctioning. Or is it just me using poor technique?

If you are wondering, I didnt decrease the ISO because I didnt want to wait around for another 4 stops of light to hit the sensor. I assumed that ISO800 wouldn't cause any issues.

Particulars for the GWB.cr2 file:
70-200 f/2.8 mkii at 70mm
f/10
450s exposure
ISO800 for the bridge pic
5Dmkiii firmware 1.3.3
Lightroom 4.4. Imported directly from the card.
High ISO noise reduction and Long exposure Noise Reduction are both turned off.
