550D vs 750D => increased sharpness / detail captured?

The new Rebel T6s (EOS 750D) has just appeared and it has a new 24 megapixel sensor. The older series all have the same 18 megapixel sensor.

Out of curiosity, I went to the store to do some test shots to see if there is a (big) difference in terms of sharpness and amount of detail captured between these two sensors.

I have two stacks: one with the Mitutoyo 5x NA 0.14 and one with the Rodenstock apo rodagon-D 75mm f/4.5 (at f/5.6, reverse mounted at ca. 1.5x magnification).

I have kept as much of the conditions the same as possible.

Feel free to download, have a look, compare and let me know your thoughts. Do you find the difference small, big or insignificant?

Three Way Shootout against the Canon 16-35 f/4L IS + EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II

Red vs. Tungsten by Thousand Word Images by Dustin Abbott, on Flickr

After I posted my initial review of the Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD several months ago, I had a lot of requests to directly compare it with the Canon 16-35mm f/4L IS. I dialogued with my affiliate partners and they threw in the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II as a third comparison point. In some of these comparisons I also add the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 into the mix. I spent the last part of March and all of April on this project, and it is, to my knowledge, the most comprehensive review/comparison of its kind. This should really help those of you considering whether or not to buy this lens, as I address just about every aspect of it. For every part there is both a video and a text review:

Part 1: Specs, Build, and Objectives: http://bit.ly/1FF1GmL

Part 2: Resolution: http://bit.ly/1IXtlzE"

I hope this helps those of you considering this lens. It definitely performed well in this extensive series of head to head comparisons and there is a good chance that the answers to most of your questions regarding these lenses is probably in here. I conclude with a buyer's guide and what type of photographer I feel each lens is suited to.

Macro Tilt-Shift on the Way? [CR1]

HTML:
We’re told that one of the upcoming tilt-shift lenses will actually be a macro lens. We’ve been told in the past that Canon would add a new type of macro to the lineup and this is the first we’ve heard of it being a tilt-shift.</p>
<p>We do expect L replacements to the TS-E 45 and TS-E 90 to come eventually, as people have been asking since the TS-E 17 and TS-E 24 were announced years ago.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

70-200 F2.8L IS Mk1 - Bad Focus

So how much trouble am I in? :-[ I sent a 70-200 F2.8L IS lens into Canon just before Christmas for repair. They ended up replacing the IS motors and a few other bits. What originally prompted me to send it was the casing was loose (starting to separate). I picked it up from the shop a few weeks later and dropped $860 on the repair. I gave it a quick look over, snapped a few pictures to test the IS and it all looked fine. Like a fool I didn't put the glass through its paces until last week. I shot two soccer games and immediately noticed the focus was off (not enough to see on the view screen) and had to toss about 80% of the pictures. I've never had any issues like this before. The camera was in manual mode, IS turned off, and focus set to AI Servo. After messing around with it I can see it ever so slightly falling in and out of focus on static objects.

What do you guys think? Canon's warranty period on repaired glass is only 90 days. If I had to guess I just tossed a good chunk of change into the wind. Thanks...

Budget ~ $1000, Sony A5100 or Samsung NX500???

My budget is ~ $1000 to spend on a compact lightweight mirrorless system for family outings and trips where I don't want to lug around the DSLR (like trips to Disneyland or park).

A few requirements:

1.) SMALL, COMPACT, & LIGHT Interchangeable lens system. Must fit in my Jacket Pocket!!!
2.) An Image Stabilized Zoom Kit lens for occasional video of the kids. I love the compact size of the Sony and Samsung Pancake zoom lenses. This lens will only be on the camera 10% of the time.
3.) Tilty touch screen is a priority over an EVF. My wife will be using it a lot and Likes using iphones to take pictures.
4.) A small compact 35-50mm (FF equivalent) Fast prime lens. Must be SHARP wide open, cheap, and light. On the camera 90% of the time.
5.) Want FF like Noise performance up to ISO 6400, Micro 4/3 is out of the question but the latest APS-C sensor can handle it
6.) Don't want to sacrifice too much on Image Quality

Option 1 (cost based on today's B&H prices)
Sony A5100 with 16-50mm kit lens - $500
Sony 35mm f/1.8 lens - $400
TOTAL COST: $900

Option 2
Samsung NX500 with 16-50mm kit lens - $700
Samsung 30mm f/2 lens - $200
TOTAL COST: $900

Sony is more popular but I'm kind of leaning towards the samsung primarily because I read the 30mm f/2 lens is a total gem of a lens (for the price). Which would you choose and why?

Adobe bidding on The Foundry

HTML:
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/adobesplash.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-19330" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/adobesplash-575x365.jpg" alt="adobesplash" width="575" height="365" /></a></p>
<p>The rumour mill is churning out that Adobe is preparing to bid on visual effects software developer The Foundry for £200m (around $302 million USD).</p>
<p>The Foundry is best known for their visual effects tool, Nuke, which has been used on most big blockbusters to produce visual effects that blur the line of what is real. Some of its most recent users include Guardians of the Galaxy, Edge of Tomorrow, and Gravity.</p>
<p>The Foundry has a many other programs including a 3D painting tool, a 3D concept designer, a lighting and look designer, and more. All of these would prove to be valuable assets under Adobe.</p>
<p>If this deal goes through, Adobe could potentially become the most powerful company in the post-production game. What do you think?</p>

Review: Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II

HTML:
<p>Bryan at the-digital-picture has completed his review of the Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II lens.</p>
<blockquote><p>Canon marketing has called the Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM Lens “The Portable Super Telephoto Lens”. The Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM Lens packages impressive image quality in an ultralight and ultra-small package with autofocus and image stabilization systems that are among the best available. The result is, at a price, an easy to take with you lens that is capable of producing world-class images.</p></blockquote>

Should I sell my gear

If I kept hold of my 5D Mark III and a L lens which one would it be?

Hi everyone, I'm new here but been a long time surfer. I'm in a huge pickle and need everyone's advise. Over the years I've collected my Canon gear a 5D Mark III intended and used for events/portrait photography. My Canon gear is: 5D MK III, 24-70mm 2.8L MKII, 50mm 1.2L, 24mm 1.4L MKII and the 85mm 1.2L MKII plus three Speedlites and Wireless trigger.

Mid last year I was diagnosed with a health condition that limits my out going and living a normal independent life. I was still employed and was able to clear some finances gear related. But as of last week I am told that I will be made redundant and will not receive redundancy. This has left me in a pickle financially as well as thinking about if I am to continue with heavy photography oriented life style (due to health, weight is becoming an issue). Since my medical condition I have scaled back quite abit on events and thus brings me the questions...

1) Should I sell all my gear? Clear my out standing fiance and still have enough left to live by while I slowly get myself into employment.

2) Keep the body and one lens only, sell everything else. If so which (see poll)?

3) Sell all and move to Fuji XT-1, I could most likely purchase a XT-1 with a decent lens (15-55?) from just the 5D MK III body sale alone.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Something odd is going on with my Canon EF 17-40 F/4 L.

I've noticed this only a couple of times within the last couple of weeks during long exposures at night and usually at 17mm. It doesn't happen every time I photograph at 17mm just sometimes and I can see it on Live View. As soon as I zoom in the dark lines on the sides go away but the blueish stuff on the bottom are new. Has anyone seen this before? What's causing it? Thanks! I shoot with a Canon 6D when I use this lens.

Metz LLC will be saved

Some good news about the Metz LLC company, well known for their flashes and TVs:

Metz (http://www.metz.de) in Zirndorf, Germany, will be taken over by some investors.
A German investor will take over the flashes division while a Chinese company will get the TVs.
So luckily no "R.I.P. Metz" like stated before here:
http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=23778.msg465176#msg465176

Downside: still some of the jobs will get lost. Let's hope, the others will be saved now for several years.

Canon 6D Green/Magenta Issues

I bought a 6D yesterday to accompany my 5Dmk3, and I have been quite underwhelmed with it so far. I was shooting a wedding last night and when comparing images the 5D looked to be an entirely different league of camera. The colors the camera produced were absolutely terrible. I matched white balance, color shift, profiles, everything. It looked about 2000k warmer and greener than the 5D at any given time.

I did some more tests this morning, and from what I can see the 6D leans waaaayyyy towards the greens instead of magentas. For example, I took a picture of my wife in our kitchen as a test. Sigma 35mm Art was used on both bodies, and both cameras were exposed to +.3. When I imported the images into ACR, both cameras were right around the same white balance; the 5D at 4000 and the 6D at 3950. The 5D had a +38 magenta, but for some reason the 6D had a +4 magenta. Obviously it looked way too green. I took about a dozen more images and it's the same in every one. The 6D simply is not adding magenta to any image unless I go in and calibrate the color shift.

Is this normal? Is there something I'm missing?

Thank you, and I appreciate your responses.

Sigma 150-600 Sport image quality on TDP

Bryan has posted the image quality shots on TDP. Where it overlaps with the 100-400mm II, the Canon wins up to 400mm, usually with a wider aperture as well, eg

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=978&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=4&API=0&LensComp=972&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=3&APIComp=1\\

The 100-400mm II + 1.4xTC at 560 mm is very similar to the 150-600mm at 600mm. The difference in weight is colossal, the difference in operational weights is 2.65 lb (1.2 kg) with the extender attached to the Canon or 3.2 lb (1.46 kg) without.

EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Update, Or Lack Thereof

HTML:
<p>We’re still waiting on the official announcement for the upcoming Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. We <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/04/ef-50mm-f1-8-stm-mentioned-again/" target="_blank">reported earlier this month</a> that would should see the announcement sometime in April, and April is nearing a close. We’ve always found that lens announcements are a moving target and nailing them down is quite difficult.</p>
<p>We haven’t heard any more information about the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS replacement <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/02/new-50mm-70-300-coming-soon-cr2/" target="_blank">we reported about back in February</a>.</p>

Canon Reports 29 Percent Drop in Q1 Profit as Compact Camera Sales Slump

HTML:
Canon Inc on Monday said net profit fell 28.7 percent in its first quarter, falling short of analyst estimates, as the Japanese company faced slumping sales of digital compact cameras.</p>
<p>Profit was JPY 33.93 billion ($285.27 million) in January-March, compared with the JPY 53.64 billion average estimate of 5 analysts according to Thomson Reuters data.</p>
<p>The result comes as the world’s biggest camera maker seeks growth opportunities, in part to offset a drop in demand for compacts as consumers increasingly rely on smartphone cameras.</p>
<p>It plans to buy Swedish surveillance firm Axis AB for $2.7 billion – offering 340 crowns ($39.31) a share until the extended deadline of May 5 – and as of Friday owned 84 percent. It does not plan to up its offer even though hedge fund Elliott Management has since raised its ownership to 10 percent.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>“Sales volume for low-end (digital camera) models declined due to the ongoing contraction of the market in all regions from the previous year,” said Canon in its earnings release. Sales of high-end models increased, it said.</p>
<p>Canon also said it expects to sell 7.0 million compact cameras in 2015, versus a previous forecast of 7.8 million and 22.5 percent less than in 2014. It projects sales of cameras with interchangeable lenses to reach 5.8 million units rather than its previous view of 6.4 million.</p>
<p>The firm, which earns about 80 percent of revenue overseas and is a major beneficiary of a weaker yen, maintained its view of the Japanese currency trading at 120 versus the US dollar in the second to fourth quarters.</p>
<p>Shares of Canon closed 0.7 percent higher ahead of the earnings release, versus a 0.2 percent fall in the broader market.</p>

More Canon EOS 6D Mark II Talk [CR1]

HTML:
A specification list for the EOS 6D Mark II has come about. It’s pretty much the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/04/canon-eos-6d-mark-ii-cr1/" target="_blank">complete opposite of what we posted a week or so ago</a>.</p>
<ul>
<li>28MP</li>
<li>6 fps</li>
<li>ISO 100 – 102400 (expandable to 204800)</li>
<li>new AF system (but not the same as on 5DS)</li>
<li>98% viewfinder coverage</li>
<li>Single SD card slot</li>
<li>WiFi, NFC, and GPS</li>
<li>small improvements for video features</li>
</ul>
<p>The rumor above suggests that Canon wouldn’t release a full frame camera with the same resolution as the Rebel series cameras, which are now at 24mp. We posted that the EOS 6D Mark II would retain its own sensor and would have a lower megapixel count than the predicted 28mp in the upcoming Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.</p>
<p>I personally believe consumers of full frame DSLRs in this day and age understand that not all pixels are created equal. I don’t believe megapixel count is part of the marketing strategies for DSLRs anymore, unless you’re talking about the high resolution 50mp+ camera.</p>
<p>Availability of the EOS 6D Mark II is said to be early 2016.</p>

How do I tell if I got a de-centred lens? (Samyang 14mm f/2.8)

Hi guys,

So I'm about to pull the trigger on the Samyang/Rokinon/Bower 14mm f/2.8 and have heard a number of people complain about getting a decentred lens. This appears to be a common problem. So, how do I tell if I got a de-centred lens?

Lens Rentals.com has a test for this, but they say it's not great for ultra-wide.

Any ideas?

Curious Deer

Spring Doe

I finally had some time to get out and do some more nature photography, after being cooped up inside from plenty of snow and pretty cold weather this winter. Had a phenomenal day this past Friday, where I sat out in a field full of deer, and had each one come within about 20-30 feet for a curious look at the strange long-snouted creature sitting there making clicking noises.

One deer in particular gave me some of the most exquisite shots I've ever had of deer. Hope you enjoy!

Canon T6i Hands On Review

Ive finished my hands on review for the T6i and thought I would share, overall GREAT little camera, I see it as a major upgrade over the T5i. Focusing systems are dominant, and I believe that Canon may have inadvertently killed the 70D with this. Love the ISO performance, face tracking is excellent.

In any event I know at least some of you will enjoy this:
