Complaints about Panasonic Service

I just came across this article, I was wondering if there are any resources comparing service from the camera companies. We see happy people and angry people, but is there a large survey of users? Consumer reports does things like that, I suppose that its expensive to run a large survey, and respondents seem to always be the ones who are unhappy, so the results have to be based on something like complaints per unit sold.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Talk [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told there are a handful of Canon EOS-1D X Mark II bodies currently being tested in the field. Canon hopes to announce this camera some time in 2015.</p>
<p>We’re told the cameras employ a higher megapixel sensor than the 18.1mp on the current EOS-1D X. The autofocus system is all new with more AF points and there is “new technology” in the viewfinder display. There is new battery technology to help lower the overall weight of the camera. The LCD is larger than the current camera and there will be obvious ergonomic changes.</p>
<p>It isn’t known if there is a new DIGIC processor in the camera, or what card types are going to be supported.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

Review: Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

HTML:
<p>DXOMark has completed their review of the EF 24-105 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens.</p>
<p>From DXOMark</p>
<blockquote><p>Despite ranking behind the more expensive Sigma and Canon pro L competition, the new 24-105mm STM standard zoom offers respectable results across the board. But if you can afford to shell out an extra $300 for the $899 Sigma 24-105mm f/4, you’ll certainly benefit from better edge sharpness at the wider aperture settings, a faster fixed f/4 aperture when shooting at 105mm, and better light transmission, too.</p></blockquote>

Does the Zeiss Batis launch indicate future Otus lenses?

Seeing Zeiss launch a Batis line for Sony, and the first ones to come out being a 25mm and an 85mm, could this give indications to where they might take the next Otus lens?

I understand that they had to release a 85mm for the portrait people, but after buying the 55mm I really hoped for a wide angle lens as the followup..

A 25mm 1.4 would be most welcome in my setup as I have moved more away from stills onto video and tv-commercials instead.

My dream would ofcourse be a wide lens that is free from the moustache issues of the 21mm ZE and level horisontal lines all the way to the edge.

But when would we see such an announcement? It's been too long already!

Using CF card in Android with OTG USB cable

Small problem, I have a 6D and 5D3, I'm using an SDXC card in the 6D (exfat format) and a CF card in the 5D3 (fat32 format). I like that the 6D has a wifi connection and I frequently download the pictures with the wifi connection to my Galaxy Note 2. I wanted something similar to that with the 5D3. I purchased a OTG USB cable and tried to connect a card reader with the CF card in it, Note 2 does not recognize it. I know it works because it will read the SDXC card with the OTG cable. So now I have two ways to get the 6D pics on my phone and still zero ways to get the 5D3 pics on the phone. Anyone have any experience in this they can share? Thanks.

Electronic compatibility of EF-S lens on EF body?

What happens when you put an EF-S lens, via electronically communicating extension tubes, on an EF body? Is there any risk of screwing up the EF body's or the EF-S lens's electronics?

I haven't tried the experiment of putting any EF-S lens on a FF body before now, mostly because without extension tubes, there can be a risk of mirror damage should the EF-S lens have a back element extension, and because one already knows that the image circle without extension will be insufficient.

I was wondering if the EF-S 24mm pancake would have a usable image circle at 1:1 on a FF body.

Old EOS body -> IP Camera

Anyone aware of any conversion kits that allow you to re-purpose an old SLR into an IP camera?

e.g. Tether the SLR to a device (Android or iOS device for example) that monitors the live-view for motion and can send motion events via e-mail similar to an IP camera.

Alternatively an inexpensive IP camera with an EF mount so you can put your un-used 400mm lens to use. (e.g. to monitor a bird house.) etc...

Canon 7D Mark II Image Quality

Hi all,

I've been reading the "new firmware" thread about the Canon 7D Mark II. Most of the complaints there seem to be related to auto-focus accuracy. What I find disappointing about my 7D2 is not the auto-focus, but the overall image quality. My other body is a 5D3, and I find that the 7D2 doesn't hold a candle to it in terms of fine detail.

I'll admit I can be a bit of a pixel-peeper, but I just can't seem to get the kind of detail I want out of my 7D2. For example, in images of birds, the fine details of the feathers are almost completely missing.

I've seen shots that others have taken with a 7D2 that seem to have better fine detail. I'm not sure if the difference is that I've got a bad 7D2 that needs to be repaired/replaced, or if I'm doing something wrong in my post-processing.

If anyone has any insight on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
-dh

T6i / T6s Dynamic Range Test vs Nikon D5500

I received my T6i yesterday, and was extremely curious about the Dynamic Range of the new 24 MP sensor being used in it and the T6s, so I put it through my DR test which is essentially firing a strobe through a 13.7 stop ND filter strip. Long story short, it is very comparable to the T5i Dynamic Range wise (I was hoping for something much better). Take a look and compare with the Nikon D5500.

That said, I have actually been very happy about it in regards to the other tests I have done. What stands out to me:

- The focusing systems, both optically and in Live View have been very good. Reminds me of a 7D or 70D. For the price, it'll be hard to beat.
- Ergonomically, a deeper grip. Feels more substantial.
- The ISO performance appears to be much better than previous Rebels.

Overall, I would say this is a significant improvement over the T5i, just was wishing for more DR.

Best wishes

MM

SDXC card size limit in 5DmkIII ?

I'm wondering if there is an upper size limit for the SD(XC) card slot in the 5DmkIII. So far, I've only used the 32GB cards, but am looking to get a 128GB SDXC card. I know someone who has used 64GB cards ok, so I assume a 128GB should work. Before I buy one, thought I'd check to see if it would work for sure, and if anyone has tried bigger cards even. Has anyone tried a 256GB card?

New Orleans Bridal Crawl - My latest video production!!

Hey all,

Well, I just recently posted my latest video the New Orleans Bridal Crawl 2014 video.

This is from the crawl last year.
This is an event for charity....it originally started trying to set a true Guiness book of records for most people in full bridal gear (men and women, this *IS* New Orleans after all)...haha.

Anyway, subsequent ones have just been the theme for a pub crawl through the French Quarter each Sept.
The folks I did this for even gave me a little premier at a small theater uptown which was nice.

I shot this on a Canon 5D3.
The dark dark shooting environments I used a rented 50L f/1.2 to turn night into daylight..that is an amazing lens.
The other lenses I used:
17-40L f/4
24-105L f/4
Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 (I LOVE this little lens).

I shot most of this on my manfrotto monopod. I had mistakenly had my usual camera settings wrong, in that I usually shoot Marvels Cinestyle...but had it on standard for part of the shoot. I saw this and switched during the day.
I used FCPX as my editor and Davinci Resolve 11 as my color tool.

I will try my next shoot with Premier Pro. I have constantly run into FCPX NOT working well with the color grades from Resolve. FCPX is doing something to the clips when they come back in and it does not reflect what I did in resolve....I finally found that some other folks have seen this with no real solution. If I spend that much time doing color, I want it to look how I fixed it.

Anyway...the BIG thing for this video, was my first real foray into heavy After Effects usage.
The beginning and end titles were AE. For the 3D logo....I'd received a PDF with their logo..I learned enough Adobe Illustrator to fix the layers to bring it into AE, and from there created the ray traced 3D extruded logo...along with using Red Giant Particular to make the fireworks from scratch and the falling stars too.

I used AE for the bars of video popping in from the beginning after the logo....I also used it for the moving montages of the street dancing and for the bull riding that also used the great VideoCopilot free plug-in Sure Target, for the flying through space effect.
http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/sure_target_2/

Anyway, the folks I did this for really enjoyed it and I'm gonna be doing it again this Sept...

Please take a look and let me know what you think and suggestions you might have.

I know some parts I wanted to cut a bit closer, but I had gotten then to work with the music (open source for commercial too, creative commons stuff)...and had run out of time to move cut and then retry to cut the music to get back to where I wanted it, etc.

Thank you in advance for watching:

Sony Introduces Two Premium ZEISS Lenses for α A-mount Camera System

HTML:
<strong>Newly Refined Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 and 16-35mm F2.8 Zoom Lenses</strong></p>
<p>SAN DIEGO, Apr. 23, 2015 – Sony today has announced two new high-performance ZEISS® lenses zoom lenses – a standard zoom and a wide-angle zoom – for its α A-mount system.</p>
<p>Designed for professionals and high-end photo enthusiasts, the new Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM II (model SAL2470Z2) standard zoom and Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM II (model SAL1635Z2) wide angle zoom lenses deliver significant improvements in image quality, ghost reduction and AF performance over their predecessors and add a rugged dust- and moisture-resistant design.</p>
<p>The new zoom lenses are ideal partners to Sony’s α A-mount family of interchangeable lens cameras, including the highly acclaimed α99 and α77 II models. With the addition of an optional mount adaptor, they’re also compatible with α E-mount cameras such as the α7 series.</p>
<p>The new Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM II and Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM II models achieve legendary ZEISS image quality thanks to ZEISS T* coating on their optical surfaces that minimizes ghosting and flare plus aspherical and ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements that suppress aberration and minimize distortion.</p>
<p>Additionally, the new models feature enhanced AF capabilities compared to their predecessors, delivering approximately 4x the subject tracking speed thanks to their SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) system and faster, more powerful processing in the lens LSI. This advanced AF performance makes the new lenses an ideal complement to the impressive 4D focus system on select α camera bodies like the α77 II model, and a great choice for shooting fast moving subjects like sports, wildlife or young children.</p>
<p><strong>Pricing and Availability

</strong>The new Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM II (model SAL2470Z2) standard zoom and Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM II (model SAL1635Z2) wide angle zoom lenses will be available this June for about $2100 and $2250, respectively.</p>

C300mk.ii 15 stop of DR using similar concept as Arri Alexis ? / Dual_iso?

Seems like in absence of exmor type on die AD's, other manufacturers are using something similar in concept to the Dual_iso that ML has. i.e. use 2 different gain paths, one low sensitivity, one high sensitivity, then combining both signals thereby enhancing DR. I was just looking at the Alexis sales brochure and it seems to use a similar idea to get 14+ stops in it's video sensors:
