Great site for test, news and discussion about lenses

A new Swedish web site, http://www.objektivtest.se/, have started. On this webpage it will be tests and discussion on lenses. They are using the MTF measuring equipment at Victor Hasselblad in Gothenburg (Göteborg). The writers on the site are Christian Nilsson, previous technical editor at the (now closed) magazine Foto and Per Nordlund, optical designer at Victor Hasselblad AB.

The site is in Swedish but Google Translate will work, https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=sv&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.objektivtest.se%2F&edit-text= :)

The test that have been published in the Swedish Foto magazine by Christian Nilsson, have in IMHO been second to none. My full lens selection is based on these tests.

Should I wait for the Mark IV, or buy the Mark III at a low price now?

Hello,

First time poster. I am in the market to buy a new camera, and I am torn between the Mark III and the Mark IV. The Mark III is clearly at the end of the cycle, and the Mark IV is just around the corner. But I do need a camera sooner rather than later. With all these rumored specs flying around, do you think I should wait for the Mark IV, or buy the Mark III at a pretty decent price with deals they have these days?

OM-D E-M5 II, smaller MFT sensor still outperforming 70D

Well, I don't know if it's really outperforming it by all THAT much, maybe not even a full stop if the iso sensitivities are real. Probably still has an edge over the 7D2 as well.

www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympus-om-d-e-m5-ii/12

OTOH, if you select the Nikon d5500 you can push that little beast +6EV and have it comparable to the EM52 and 70D pushed only 3 EV. That's some kinda clean.

Golly, Canon, what'r'ya gonna do 'bout dat?

Canon 5D MkIII versus Sony A7RII (rumor to be released)

I'm just a enthusiast and I'm on sitting on a fence for a long while debating if I should get Canon 5D mark iii or wait for Sony A7Rii to be released soon using metabones adapter w/ my Canon L lens. Anyone with similar interest/question perhaps could enlighten on this choice. Canon5D iii (older, but all rounded capability) VS Sony A7RII with great sensor, and stability axis.

EF 300mm 2.8L auto-focus issue

I just picked up a 300 2.8L original non-IS version for a super-steal of a deal at an estate sale. When using it with my 40D everything is great but when I try my 6D I can get amazing fast auto-focus in full-auto mode and in the other auto's like "sports mode" etc. But I can't get auto-focus to work while in aperture or shutter priority mode or in full manual.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I've never updated the firmware on my 6D (or any camera for that matter) is that the problem?

Wideangle for APS-c

I'm looking for a wide-angle lens for an APS-C body, predominately for landscape work. The lens needs to be able to fit a 100mm filter holder. I'd also love a focus dial, but that's not strictly necessary.

I've looked at many options (Tokina 11-16/EF-s 10-18/Sigma 10-20), but I just can't get my head around how they compare.

Anyone got any suggestions or Experience?

KR: NO 5D Mark IV Coming - ever

I just ran across this from here:

http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/5d-mk-iv.htm

"There is no Canon 5D Mark IV, and probably never will be.

Canon usually lays off the "Mark" sequence after about Mark III for anything, and with the introduction of the 5DS in January 2015, there will probably never be a 5D Mark IV..."

Didn't he previously have a date on his site for when the 5D Mark IV would come out, which ended up being incorrect (it was close to the 5DS release date though)?

He goes on to say that if one ever existed, it would likely borrow features from the 7DII and 5DS (namely anti-flicker) and "should" have more FPS than the 5DS - around 10 fps - and remain around 22 MP.

Then he brands this yet to exist camera a consumer camera (I thought the 5D line was considered "Prosumer"?) and, based on his previously mentioned fast fps thoughts says, "The world of actual shooting (as opposed to desk jockeys reading about cameras on the internet) doesn't really need a fast consumer full frame camera."

If I understand his logic correctly, it's:
1. I think if they made a 5D4 it should have this.
2. I don't think shooters need that set of features.

and then instead of concluding that his prediction may be faulty...

3. There will never be a 5D4.

?? What?

Towards the bottom of the page he calls the 5DS the 5DIII's replacement and adds "and we're done." "Any idiot can count to four, but in this case, there won't be a 5D Mark IV because it's called the 5DS."

?HUh?

Lens Kit Q?

Has any one got the 16-35 f4 IS L kit from Adorama ... and if so, how was it packed. -- Includes a UA filter, lens cleaner, wrap etc.

I just got mine -- the lens was in its Canon box, and the rest of the 'stuff' was just laying in the box ... the lens was sorta wrapped in air-bags... When I've bought 'kits' in the past, it's always in a kit package, like each part has a slot in a pre-packed box, and then that box is wrapped in a shipping box.

Can any one comment on the kit packaging ... the one I received was more like how a refurb is packed, or a used lens. And, of course, this one is brand new ... I'm wondering if this got mixed up with a different order. Lens seems fine - but if I paid new, I want new ...

Also, they charged me the $1199 price on my card (part of a lens I traded got a credit that does not show anywhere), but my receipt shows misc charges that add up to a total of $930 ... not $1199 -- so anyone got a kit and had it packed like this, or packed like a kit.

Will call them Monday - but wanted to know what anyone else received as kit packing?

AFMA - Huge Swing

Hi All,

Yesterday afternoon I shot pictures at a soccer match. One combination 5D Mark III, EF 400mm f2.8L IS II and EF 1.4X III gave me terrible results. Everything was severely back focused. I do AFMA my lens/body combinations occasionally and normally they are spot on.

This body/lens combo AFMA'ed at +9 on 10/7/2014. I didn't bother to re-calibrate it for yesterday's game and I know lenses/bodies change but I wouldn't have expected such a huge change. Today I re-calibrated the body/lens combination and ended up with a -9. That's an 18 point swing. I have done several test shots after re-calibrating and the body/lens combination now appears to be spot on.

What concerns me is the amount of swing. 18 points seems incredibly large. Neither the body or the lenses have been dropped, banged, etc.

The 400mm f2.8L IS II was spot on, on my 1DX during the same game, however I wasn't using the teleconverter in this combination. Also, I shot a bit with the 5DIII and a 70-300mm L, which was also spot on. This leads me to believe that my 1.4X III teleconverter might be the culprit.

Has anyone else here experienced such a huge change in AFMA that wasn't caused by some other event such as dropping a body or lens?

5DSR vs A7R dynamic range

I noticed the guys over at imaging resource have taken some images with the new 5DSR.. So I've run a comparison looking for DR (ok I know they're only JPEGs.. but I thought it might still be interesting).

I took the ISO100 image with minimum noise reduction from each set.. downloaded, popped them into DPP and then boosted the brightness and contrast to reveal a reflection of the photographer lost in the darkness of the "fiddlers" bottle.

Frankly the 5DSR does very well, but the A7R wins.

70D + 16-35 f/4L IS USM - DPAF noise/smoothness?

Hi all,
I am wondering if anyone here has compared the 16-35 f/4L IS to the kit 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 STM.

The latter is fantastic for video with smooth precise and quiet focusing, but the former has better optics even on crop.

Has anyone tried the 16-35 f/4L IS to see how it stacks up for video in terms of:
1) noise
2) focusing smoothness

I am asking as I know the 16-35 f/4L image stabilization is a bit noisy to initialize when taking photos but for videos this may not be the case. Also, not all USM lenses focus as smoothly and accurately as the 18-135mm STM when using the 70D's touchscreen DPAF.

Thanks! :)
