Focus issues Canon 500mm F4 L IS MKI

Hi Folks

I just recently picked up a Canon 500mm F4 MKI, i bought it used from a good friend of mine who takes very good care of his equipment. I know that i have a learning curve ahead of me with this lens, i have been shooting for about 8yrs now so not new but still always willing to learn. So here is my problem i have used the 500mm on both of my cameras 6D&7D on tripod or rested on a car window so pretty stable platforms, the 500 is quick but it leaves me baffled as to why the focus indicator in camera says it is focused and i take a series of pics only to find out that they are all soft with no detail Mushy if i can say that with single point focus or any combination of focus modes and drive speeds,of a stationary object i.e:Sled Dogs lying down etc etc, nothing super fast or fast movements at all most photos are taken at 1/1250 or above F8 down to F4 low iso, ETTR and all pics are Mushy but than can go out the next day and be spot on 8 out of 10x so i am asking if it is maybe Due to Contrast levels atmospheric levels, etc etc my Tripod is a Manfrotto 055XB Pro and a Manfrotto 804 head but i have a JoBu Gimbal on the way :). Remember we live in the Arctic so we have a lot of White here right now just to keep that in mind. See attached photos they are cropped a lot just so that you can see what i am talking about pic number 2 is sharpish and taken on a different day when the focus seemed to work.
Thanks

Hey folks,

I'm wondering if it's worth getting a backup for a 6D. I'm an enthusiast; not a professional. I've been on a few trips already w/ one body so far and haven't had any issues (knocking on wood). I'm wondering if I even need a backup or not. I've been using my 6D for almost two years now w/ no issues. I also don't want to have to switch to CF cards. I wanted to get some opinions on second bodies for a 6D user who's an enthusiast. Is it worth having one or should I just save my money? Thanks!

Kenco Teleplus Pro 300 3XM DG 3xTC

Some of us have played around stacking the 1.4xTC and 2xTCIII with an extension ring. They don't AF. I became intrigued on seeing the review of the Kenco Teleplus Pro 300 3XM DG, which is meant to be manual focus only 3xTC but it actually performs better than the Kenco 2xTC.

http://www.ephotozine.com/article/kenko-teleplus-teleconverters-2x-and-3x--review-14047

The 3xTC is no longer in production but some are being sold from Korea on eBay for about £800. A used one just came up on eBay for £50, and I decided it was worth a punt. It doesn't AF attached to a 300/2.8 II or the 100-400mm II but it focusses fine in liveview on the 7DII. It is very sharp, and I am going to use it on occasion with the 300/2.8 II plus 7DII, as an f/8.4 900mm! Can't wait for a clear night for a moon shot!

Edit. I should have written it autofocusses very well in liveview on the 7DII, the dual pixels make all the difference.

I've seen many photographers who attach a protection filter and do not use the lens hood, while there are some who will always use the hoods, filter or no filter.

Personally, I use the hoods to prevent smudging by hands and also for protection purposes. I don't use filters though (unless it is a CPL).

Just curious, how many of us in CR space use lens hoods? If not, what are your reasons for not using the hoods?

Canon 16-35mm advice

Recently my Canon 16-35mm II got shattered in a freak accident during an event, it slipped right out of my fingers when I got it out of the bag and dived head first to the ground. Front element is completely shot, the zoom won't work and I hear ramblings inside the housing. Iy still takes pictures, very distorted as expected and AF seems to be working, totally unreliable I imagine.
Anyway I send it to Canon for repairs and expect a bill that it is not economical to repair. I called the gear insurance as well and they will cover it 100% no matter the cost, which is perfect.
Even in the worst case scenario where my lens is a total loss, I have to buy a new one and I am considering the F4 IS version as a possible replacement. Talking to the event shooters, I rarely shoot in brightly lit conditions, handheld, low shutter speeds and I am wide open 80% of the time with the mk II version and I am wondering how well the F4 IS performs. I lose a stop, but is the difference very noticeable if I bump the ISO a stop to compensate?

Canon EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R at HKIPP Chai Wan Day in Hong Kong

HTML:
A Canon Rumors reader sent in some thoughts and observations about the upcoming Canon EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R cameras at an <a href="http://hkipp.org/news-events/7119/hkipp-chai-wan-day-2015-2/20150303" target="_blank">event in Hong Kong</a>.</p>
<p>OBSERVATIONS</p>
<ul>
<li>Sturdy build quality, could be better than the EOS 5D Mark III</li>
<li>Viewfinder displays are quite complex</li>
<li>As suspected, still running beta software</li>
<li>The shutter sound is quite soft</li>
<li>Continuous shooting feels slow, but we knew that already</li>
<li>Large sample prints looked great</li>
</ul>
<p>The Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R are not yet available for preorder, but they are expected to start shipping at the end of June.</p>

Ultra Wide Angle Sigma Art Coming? [CR1]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that Sigma is working on an Art series ultra wide angle lens. It’s unknown if this would be a replacement to the Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG, or an addition to the lineup. With the cost of Canon’s latest EF 11-24mm f/4L, I think it’s safe to assume there would be a market for less expensive version from Sigma with the optical performance of previous Art series lenses.</p>
<p>If true, I wouldn’t expect it to be coming in the near future.</p>
<p>On a side note, we’re told Sigma will restart production of the 24-105mm f/4 DG OS later in 2015.</p>

The painful reality of vacation photography

So, my two kids and I went to the Cancun area for 3 days. I took an entire backpack of Canon stuff. 6D body and lenses: 8-15mm, Sigma 24-105mm art, 70-200 mm 2.8 mk2, 1.4 x TCiii, and 2 x TCiii. And I took every damn shot... all 450+ of them with my iPhone6+. Never even opened up the camera backpack. :((
Why? Sand, salt, convenience, sunscreen oil, weight, theft, moving fast, impatient teenagers, hands full with towels, snorkels, passports, and whatever else. Think I'm gonna shoot myself.

But you know what, the reason I kept shooting with the iPhone6+? The shots kept turning out. (Except telephoto.... awful).

400mm DO IS II - availability & price lenshood

I am still trying to find an shop where I can test an 400mm DO IS II for some shots.
They often can order the lens, but no professional shop has one physically here. :(

My questions:
  • Is there an South-German or Austrian shop who has one to get some shots with it? Does anybody know one?
  • The pricing of the lens hood is making me >:( . 500€ for an metal tube??? :o :o Is there an alternative lenshood existing for this lens? chinese reproduction?

thanks
Daniela

p.s. why do I ask? Well, the 400mm lens, I shot with, was an selected one for an German test magazine... So, I doubt, if an "normal" one will be as good as....

6D or 5DMK3 for Astrophotography.... thoughts?

Hey guys, I have a two part question I've been doing a ton of research but can't seem to make up my mind. I currently use a Canon 60D with the 10-20mm sigma for Astrophotography and it does pretty moderately alright for star shots.

Im looking at upgrading my body and a lens to something a little more serious for what I want to be able to continue doing. So far I have found the Canon 6D and the 11-16mm tokina (open to other reccomendations, I've seen many Rokinon lens' that will do the same trick) as a new combination for some wide angle astrophotography. What are your thoughts?

Im also looking to sell:
Canon 60D body
18-55mm Canon
10-20mm Sigma
70-300mm Sigma DG Macro Telephoto
50mm Canon f/1.8

Does anyone know of a site where I could get appraised, if not a general value that I should be looking at? All products are spotless, have always had filters on them and no scratches on the lens or bodies.

7D MK II skin tones/color issues (5d Mk III +7D MK II owners)

Greetings,

I sold the 7D to buy the MK II as a 2nd/back-up body and am pleased with the camera except that I can not match the skin tones to my 5D Mk III.

ALL settings being equal, lens, WB, etc, this should be possible but the 7D MK II is giving me very yellow results. This would make it impossible to shoot them side-by-side since syncing the files would not yield consistent results.

5D MK III is not the issue since colors agreed with the 7D and 6D.

Anyone out there with the two bodies get the same colors/skin tones?

5D MK III is not the issues since colors agreed with the 7D and 6D

Thinking of a new body, want your opinions

What's currently in my bag:

40D
24-70/2.8
70-200/2.8 IS
50/1.4
Sigma 30/1.4
Nikon 105/2.5 on an adapter ring (don't knock it, it's a great piece of glass)
430 EX
Fuji x100s

So, I'm starting to feel the age of my 40D ever since i got the fuji, IQ is so much better with the fuji, and it practically sees in the dark compared with my 40D, but when I have the light, or I'm shooting something that moves (ie. my 6 month old puppy, or bike racing) I bust out the 40D for the autofocus.

I've been watching the price of the 5Diii come down lately, and also been eyeing the 7Dii. The fuji gives me hope for a crop sensor to produce great results, but I also find that the crop makes me feel like my lenses are a bit long, especially when I shoot cyclocross and can get in close to the action anyway.

I guess i'm considering staying APS-C and getting a 7Dii and a ultrawide lens, or moving to full frame...

Should i get a 5Diii? wait for a mark iv? get a 7Dii and a super wide angle?

I know i won't get any resale out of the 40d, so i can always just keep it around, or sell it for $200 or whatever i'll get for it just to get it out of the house and keep my girlfriend from yelling at me about it.

pricewise - just try and keep me from getting yelled at by the gf

6D + 7D Mark II or 5D Mark III

Hi guys,

For those of you who saw my other post, you know that I have lost my 7D along with three of my other lenses. As someone wisely advised at a post I read somewhere, this is an opportunity (or an excuse) to upgrade. So if I was shopping for a new body, which is the better option?

How is the low light performance of the 7D Mark II compared to the 5D Mark III? How is the high ISO noise and the AF and tracking ability? I know that the 5D Mark III still beats out the 7D Mark II with low light, but by how much? And would having a 6D combination offset the difference?

I know I'd be trading in the 7D Mark II's reach and FPS for the 5D Mark III's low light abilities, but is it a big leap in low light performance especially when shooting moving things?

* Supports PC output interface
* Supports USB upgrades

Compatible ETTL flash list:
CANON – 600EX-RT, 580EX II, 430EX II, 320EX, 270EX II

A USB port for firmware updates, and PC sync port are provided on the side of the case. And a test fire and shutter release button are located on top. - See more at: http://flashhavoc.com/yongnuo-yne3-rx-receiver-released/#sthash.lq0kyG60.dpuf

Compatibility seems to be with Canon 580EX II and 430EX II - but not with earlier models like 580EX, 430EX.

Capabilities/reliability etc. yet to be confirmed, especially as far as HSS and other more advanced features go.
Since shipments take a while, only few and sketchy first-hand user reports are currently available - see the comments below the linked article on flashhavoc.

If these units work well and reliably, it would finally provide a way to integrate existing 580EX II / 430EX II speedlites into a RT setup, using an RT master (600EX or ST-E3) as well as cheap Yongnuo speedlites. And used prices for Canon 580/430 II's may go up a bit.

Maybe Shanny, the other Chinese RT-system copycat will soon bring their version of an RT reciever (or transceiver) to market.

Avaliability of these units may also get Canon to announce a 430EX-RT speedlite ... at last! Plus some extra rounds of cash-back globally for Canon RT gear. ;D

Challenges with Sony A7R

Hi

I rented a Sony A7R and after the week was over I had a love / hate relationship with the body.

The biggest challenge I faces was AF in live view. Unlike my Canon cameras I could not figure out how magnify an area on the rear LCD screen.

The viewfinder was very interesting and for the most part great - I could see the level indicators and even the histogram. The body was nice and light, and even though AF did not work most several of my lens with the metabones adapter this did not matter much for landscape photography.
