Best picture style for video recording?

I own a canon 6d which I use mostly for still photography, but as I want to get more into filmmaking I was wondering what kind of picture style you would recommend for videoshooting?

Up until now I've been using the very flat cinestyle which has been okay, but I find that the sharpness of the video suffers greatly. Are there any better options for getting a sharper image while retaining a relatively flat look?

Thanks in advance for any inputs and suggestions!

5D3 AF illumination point issue ever fixed?

Hi all,
With price of 5D3 dropping, might consider getting one if it goes really cheap when the 5D4 is announced.

Quick question though, I know there was a lot of disappointment when the 5D3 was released that the focus points were hard to see in dim light as they did not individually light in red. I assume this was deemed a hardware issue and never remedied via firmware, correct? This plus the lack of interchangeable focus screen would probably be a deal breaker for me. Thanks.

Looking for second Body

Hi Guys,

I am currently thinking about a second body tbeside my 5d MK III. In the past I already had a 400D and a 50D and I don't want to have such a small camara again. Reason for that is ergonimics and the 1.6 crop. As I also do not want to invest too much money I am considering a used 1D mark II or mark III.

Would you say that it makes sense or is the IQ too bad compared to the 5D? Or do you have another good idea? Thanks for your help!

Are Photorama shows any good?

A Photorama USA camera show will be in my area (suburban Chicago) tomorrow. They have camera shows across the US. Is it worth attending? Judging from the photos on their site, it looks like the dealers mostly have film gear. I'd be looking EF lenses or lighting gear.

Just trying to find out if anyone has been to one of these shows before, if it's worth the $6 admission and 30-minute drive, and if there are any good deals to be had.

Incorrect/inconsistent comment count on desktop vs mobile front page

I've noticed that since the site changed, the number of comments on a thread related to a front page news story/rumor is often incorrect, and is entirely different for the mobile version of the front page versus the desktop version.

For example, this thread says "2 COMMENTS" on the desktop front page, and "31 COMMENTS" on the mobile front page.

Also, I've seen "0 COMMENTS" when there were many posts in the thread a number of times.

It's not a big deal, but I figured I'd mention it in case others are experiencing the same bug.

Canon 15mm fisheye vs Canon 8-15mm fisheye

Hopefully in the next month, I will have the money to buy one, trying to figure out which I should get. I've heard good things about both. I usually shoot electronic music concerts, so I like the idea of having the old 15 at f2.8 and i have been told it has a faster AF and the IQ is a bit better than the 8-15...is this true? any help would be greatly appreciated.

7d mark II AF calibration issues - Would you send it in?

Hi everyone!

I have the 7d2 and tamrons 24-70mm 2.8 + canon 50mm 1.4 and Im about to lose my mental health with this AFMA so I really need some advice here!

How did I AFMA?: Body on tripod, 2sec delay, 10 shots per set (first at around 2-3m and then at 5-6m), rotated focus ring in between shots (1st shot front 2nd back and so on...) Target chart on a table ( that's covered with a white towel) and at the same level few meters away from the wall.

I've been trying to AFMA my lenses for the past 2 days now with great effort but Im still not pleased. My problem is that the amount of adjustment needed varies greatly (especially with the Tamron). For me it seems like the camera is front focusing more the further you are from the target.

With the 50mm around +14 correction is needed to hit the 0 marker on my chart at optimal distance guided in my chart (40xFocal lenght =2meters with the 50mm). I feel like even more is needed if I back up to around 5 meters.

Tamrons 24-70mm (@70mm) got me really frustrated... At closer distance (@70mm) it's front focusing and backing further makes it focus back. Im totally lost with this one. Dunno if it's the lens or the body causing this issue. Also funny thing is that somewhere in the middle distance it's actually close to perfect.

Here are cropped pictures of the test shots I took. Shot in RAW cropped in LR and converted into jpeg.

Nikon 1200-1700mm Zoom

Interesting article about this lens. It puts the Sigma Sport 150-600 to shame, and it can be adapted for Canon with a cheap adapter :D. Since its manual focus anyway, it should work well.

Its going to be tough to find one, and even tougher to pay for it. I'm not sure that any have actually sold on the open market, they are likely all owned by news organizations or very wealthy collectors.

EOS 5D Mark IV Mentioned [CR1]

Stumbled upon this over at NL
http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_5d4.html

"14th We're told (thanks) that the 5D mk4 won't be along until later in the year, not until the 5Ds/R is shipping in reasonable numbers. Part of the timing depends on just how well it sells and to whom - 5D3 sales in Europe have been holding up well, which might push the 5D4 back beyond the update of the 1D X.
This may or may not fit in with info (thanks) from the far east, that the 5D4 is due in August/September and would come in at 28MP, 9fps and with 4k video. Both the 5D4 and 1D X update would see the launch of a 'significant' advance in Canon's flash control capabilities. This would also include adapters/controllers and firmware updates for recent models to make more use of the functionality.
As someone who uses flash rather rarely on my ageing 1Ds3 (I don't really do 'people photography' in our business ;-), I've no idea what areas this could cover?
Both rumours are out beyond my normal ~3 month 'reality window', so deserve a suitable scepticism at the moment"

Hope the 28 MP sensor rumor is wrong...it kinda contradicts to what Canon said upon announcement of the 5D3 back in the day... :-\ So I strongly hope for a 5DX...

Let's see what CRguy comes up with these days...!!! 8)

More power compatible lights with Canon's ST-E3-RT

Hi all

I currently have a couple of 600EX-RTs & a ST-E3-RT to trigger them and have been wanting more power for larger modifiers, currently a Wistro AD-180 fills this gap marginally, all be it used manually and without the Canon speedlites and the expensive RT functions.

Since the release of the Profoto B1 and now the Indra 500 (both with TTL) I am wondering if Canon might release something similar to the Profoto B1 that syncs with the 600EX-RTs & ST-E3-RT.

Two completely different systems just isn't good enough, any thoughts or rumours or is Canon missing this market and leaving there customers with just a minimum. The Canon 600EX-RT is an awesome speedlite but it just lacks power compared to their competitors in this regard.

16-35mm f/4L IS "sticky noise" zoom ring noise?

HI all.

Long story short, 2 copies of 16-35 f/4l IS, both of them seem to make a crackling sound like there is too much lubricant or something sticking when zooming, especially at the wide end. It makes an audible noise when zooming. Does not appear to affect zoom performance much. Anyone encountered this noise? Again 2 copies with exact same issue. Thanks.

This is aMazing!

The 5Dmk3 shoots so fast like a machine gun!! (Compared to my 6D) First time ever I'm able to take pictures of my 2 year old running toward me. OMG, I can't imagine shooting with 7dmk2. I always know the 5D would be faster, but this fast? And thank God the grip is bigger. It fits so much better in hand. The buttons and menu! Everything makes sense. (Well, except these rate button and whatever button above it, which are very silly to me). I thought about keeping the 6D for backup but maybe I'll sell it when it's still worth something now. No regrets for having owned the 6D for two years. So many precious moments of my son recorded with the 6D. I know everybody is looking forward to mk4 but mk3 seems pretty sufficient for my purposes.

600 L II + 1.4x III vs. 100-400 L II + 2x III

Hi,

I recently bought the 100-400 L II to use it instead of my 600 L II in some situations. The other day I had both with me and photographed the same subject with both. At that moment I wasn't meaning to test them side by side. But later I looked at the results side by side, because I was curious how much of a compromise the 100-400 is vs the big one.

I attach the comparative image for you to come to your own conclusion. Both combinatioins were shot wide open, however with differenct cameras. 600 L was on the 5DII, 100-400 on the 6D. They were edited differently. 100-400 got more sharpening. This might look not scientific, but it is not meant to be. It is real life.

Canon 5D MIII to Fuji X-T1

Hi!

I'm using a Canon 5D MIII with 24-105 and 100mm L Macro
I'm mostly interested in landscape, landscape astrophotography and Macro.

Unfortunately I feel that my kit is heavy, so I'm thinking to swap it with Fuji X-T1 with 16-55 f2.8 lens and Zeiss 50mm Macro (I'll upgrade this to Fuji 120mm Macro when it's available)

Do you think I'd miss a lot after this switch?

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L IS Mentioned [CR1]

HTML:
<p>It’s been a long time since anyone gave a mention to a replacement for the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L, one of Canon’s best optical performers. We were told a few years ago that Canon was going to be replacing all of the 400mm lenses in their lineup. The EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II was first and then the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II, which caught us a bit by surprise. Soon after we got the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II, which is as highly regarded as we thought it would be. That leaves one of the best kept secrets in Canon’s lens lineup, the EF 400mm f/5.6L.</p>
<p>We’re now told that an IS version of this prime is in the works and if things go to plan, we’ll see it some time in 2016. Canon does recognize a need for such a lens, especially for birders who like the lower weight and price when compared to the faster primes and the zoom.</p>

Review: Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC

HTML:
Dustin Abbott has completed his review of the Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UNC. This is a lens that I find quite interesting, as it’s now part of a very crowded field of capable autofocus 50mm lenses. The difficulty I have with this lens is its $399 price tag, which is above Canon’s own, albeit aging (understatement of the year?) autofocus 50mm f/1.4. However, the reviewer here feels the optics of the Rokinon are superior to that of the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4.</p>
<p>That said, I do feel 50mm is a difficult focal length to manually focus accurately with the focusing screens that come standard in Canon DSLRs.</p>
<blockquote><p>The challenge for most photographers will be the fact that this lens does not include autofocus. That makes it a lot more work! Despite the negatives here, however, you can probably tell that I enjoyed my time with this lens. In many ways it did win me over by producing some great images that I’m really proud of. I’ll also acknowledge that I am a bit of a masochist when it comes to photography; I enjoy the challenge of manual focus lenses. You will have to decide for yourself whether or not the excellent image quality from the lens is worth the challenges of acquiring images with it.</p></blockquote>
<p>If Rokinon finds a way to sell this lens for $299, then they may get some takers. At the $399 retail price it sits at, I think only a select few will choose this lens over the multitude of other options out there. Even from a video standpoint, for $150 more, you can get the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Rokinon_50mm/Ntt/Rokinon+50mm/N/0/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">cinema version of this lens</a>.</p>

5DS and 5DS R, the best of both in one body

I have a question about the existence of these two models - 5DS and 5DS R. In theory, it wouldn't be a single body able to activate the Low Pass filter only when necessary, at the choose of the photographer? As I understand, the AA filter cancellation solution does not change the hardware models, but requires limiting choices. I guess it's not that simple, but it couldn't be an alternative way to solve this limitation?
What is your opinion?

Lensbaby 55mm f/1.6 On The Way

HTML:
<p class="p1">It’s been a while since I’ve seen a mention of Lensbaby products. Apparently they’re going to be announcing a 55mm f/1.6 for both Canon and Nikon in early April, with the potential of more mounts coming in the future. The lens will feature a macro capability and price is unknown.</p>
<p class="p1">Do you any of you own and use a Lensbaby product?</p>
