Test of Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM lens on Sony A7S

Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM was always one of my favorite lens used on Canon 1Dx.
It was always perfectly focusing even wide open at F1.2 and providing very nice rendering.

Last year I started using A7S for low light shooting (as walk around camera) instead of 1DX and I was never disappointed as A7S was always providing better high ISO image quality at low light conditions compared to Canon 1Dx and also A7S is much more convenient as walk around camera.

Few days back decided to test EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM on Sony a7S and see what would be result of that combo, especially using EF 85 wide open at very low light conditions.
First of all EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM focusing well with Metabone adaptor , though not very fast – for autofocus speed this combo definitely cannot compete with this lens on 1DX.
On the other hand, manual focus using this lens on A7 cameras is extremely easy and always precise (perfect) due to focus peaking feature on A7. As result, using Canon lens in manual focus is much more convenient and much easier than on any Canon camera. Especially easy and precise when using EF85 due to very shallow DOF at F1.2.
Below are some test results for those who might be interested
First two photos are done at extremely low light condition , the rest at normal light.

PM'd by a guest

Hi guys

I seem to have been PM'd by a guest. An honest message asking questions about one of my pieces of equipment, not spam or anything. I'd like to reply to them but don't seem to be able to because they are not listed as a member. I wasn't even aware that non members could send PMs.

My question is, is it possible to reply via PM; am I missing something? Or would it be permissible to post a reply as a new topic in the appropriate forum?

Kindest regards

Ian.

PS: This is the message I received in my inbox.

Hi,

I happened to see in your signature that you've got the P0. I have been eyeing this as my next travel tripod head but there seems to be minimal information on it online! It sort of came and went, even though SOME still swear by it!

Was hoping you could share some insights about the head - how long have you had it.. likes/dislikes, etc.?

You've got a slightly beefier setup than I and I was wondering if you have any issues with it holding the weight, any creep, etc.?

Greatly appreciate your insights!

New Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 vs. Vintage Primes Shootout (Takumar, Helios, Zeiss...)

Hi everyone. The new Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC lens is a throwback. Manual everything, but also some the great drawing and IQ that I associate with some of my favorite vintage primes. I threw it up against four of my favorite 50ish primes from yesteryear: SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4, SMC Takumar 55mm f/1.8, Helios 44-2 (58mm f/2), and Zeiss Planar T* 1.7/50mm. I've included small reviews of each of the vintage primes, too, along with galleries from each lens. I think you'll enjoy it - take a look!

On Chip Customizable Super Dynamic Range Imaging Thought

How About if 4 or 2 adjacent pixel sensor will process different exposure in one shot to produce 4 or 2 images with different stops. (ex: 4 diff : –4 -2 0 +2 or -4 0 +4 +8 / 2 diff -4 0 or 0 +8)
The Result stored in New SDR-RAW Image that contain 4 or 2 images in one file
Later on chip camera or Pc/Mac software can process this images layer for final jpg result.
Canon has 50Mp, it will be 50/4 = 12.5Mp or 50/2 = 25Mp Super Dynamic Range
This is just a thought in my head ... ;D ;D

Pocketwizard/600EX-RT question

Hi all
I was wondering if anyone with relevant experience/gear can answer the following questions and help me out.
The key question is, does the the 600EX-RT function as a radio master at all if it is not physically on the camera hot shoe? If yes, then what happens in the following situations:
Situation 1: I have a MiniTT1 on camera, and 600EX-RT on the shoe- the MiniTT1 using standard triggering to trip a non-Canon flash (Godox, FYI) on the the FlexTT5 hotshoe. In this situation, can the 600EX-RT act as a radio master and trip and control other 600EX-RTs?
Situation 2: I have a MiniTT1 on camera, and the OC-E3 is on the the MiniTT1 hotshoe. Can I connect a 600EX-RT to the other end of the cord and have it function as a radio master?
Situation 3: I have a MiniTT1 on camera, and 600EX-RT is on the FlexTT5 (no non-Canon flash in the system, FYI). Can the off camera 600EX-RT act as a radio master?
Situation 4: I have a OC-E3 cord on camera, and 600EX-RT is on the other end of the cord. Can the off camera 600EX-RT act as a radio master?

I am planning to go either the MiniTT1/FlexTT5 way if at least some of the above options are possible, to combine my Godox AD360 with the 3 Speedlites. If not, I plan to go the YN-E3-RX route. That is cheaper, but less reliable and I still haven't heard a single review of the YN receiver with non-Canon lights.
Thanks so much in advance!

My Review: EF 11-24 f/4L USM w/ Samples & Comparisons

I received my 11-24L last week and did what was SUPPOSED to be a quick writeup (ended up taking longer than I anticipated -- I even drafted up a few points before I received my lens) of my new toy on my site here:

http://www.bgateb.com/2015/03/canon-ef-11-24-f4l-usm-lens-review/

There are a few (okay, maybe more than a few) things I did wrong, but I plan on revisiting these issues in a future post.

Exposure Issue with 7D Mk II

All 7D Mk II Owners,

I've got a new 7D Mk II and I've found an exposure shift between One Shot and AI Focus modes.
Here is an example of what I am seeing:
Camera is set to AV Mode, F4.0, ISO 800. I'm shooting the same consistently illuminated scene.
Shooting in One Shot mode the shutter speed is 1/400.
Shooting in AI Focus mode the shutter speed is 1/250.

It's almost a full stop difference. Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Thanks,
DJD

35mm f/1.4L USM OR 16-35mm f/4L IS USM OR 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM

Sorry for the long title. I need your guys suggestions and opinions..

What would be the best lens for me?

I need a lens for skyline, landscape and indoor shooting. i'm working with a 60D and a 5D3 (i'm looking to get a 3rd body, maybe a 6D or a 5D2). I have seen what all these lenses can do and they are all phenomenal. The 35mm has stood out for me from what i've seen on Flickr. BUT i would love to hear what you all have to say that would convince me otherwise.
;)

Review: Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM

HTML:
The flood of reviews for the brand new Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L continue to roll in, I don’t think I’ve ever read so many reviews for a single lens in my life. This time, we’re sharing Tim Dodd’s review, who has provided some real world, working photographer points of view on this lens.</p>
<p>Tim is also probably the first to drop and break the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1116125-REG/canon_9534b001_lens_cap_for_11_24mm.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">big front lens cap</a> on the EF 11-24mm f/4L, that has to count for something!</p>
<blockquote><p>So to sum up: Canon has produced a lens that’s as sharp or sharper than its prime counterparts. Although slower (F stop wise). It has chromatic aberration and distortion well under control. Vignetting is probably its biggest fault. But, that’s probably the easiest thing to have fixed in post, so I’m not shaken by that.</p>
<p>It’s a heavy, big lens that might be intimidating to some. It’s very front heavy–so heavy in fact it fell out of my shoulder bag already…</p></blockquote>

Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art first resolution testing posted - LensTip

Imperial Captain: "Our first catch of the day."

From Lenstip:
http://www.lenstip.com/index.php?test=obiektywu&test_ob=430

"It is obvious at once that the 1.4/24 model is far more difficult to produce than the 1.4/35. In a range from f/5.6 to f/16 both lenses are practically indistinguishable but in the f/1.4-4.0 range the lens with a longer focal length prevails decisively."

I know resolution isn't everything, but clearly Sigma had a harder job at 24 than they did at 35 or 50.

Making 'Art': DPReview Goes Inside Sigma's Aizu Lens Factory

HTML:
While at CP+ last month in Japan, DPReview had the privilege of touring a Sigma lens factory in Aizu, Japan. We’ve all seen lens factories before, but I never get bored of looking at them.</p>
<blockquote><p>Mr Yamaki’s philosophy for Sigma is inherited from his father, Michihiro Yamaki, who died in 2012. It can be summed up in four words: ‘small office, big factory’. The great majority of Sigma’s employees in Japan are involved directly in creating its products, and the company maintains a relatively small administrative staff.</p></blockquote>
<p>Sigma has their next Art series lens, the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1120085-REG/sigma_24mm_f_1_4_dg_hsm.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">24mm f/1.4 DG Art</a> hitting stores by the end of March for the Canon mount.</p>

Patent: Another 100x Zoom PowerShot

HTML:
Before the Canon PowerShot SX60 HS hit the market last fall, there had been rumblings that it would have a 100x zoom, but it *only* came with 65x zoom which worked out to a focal length of 24-1365mm. <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2013/12/whos-ready-for-a-100x-zoom-powershot/">There was a patent for a 100x zoom optical formula</a> at that time, but I guess it wasn’t ready for market. Now, another 100x zoom patent has come to light, this time with a 24-2400mm focal length when factoring in the 1/2.3″ sensor.</p>

<p>Could the PowerShot SX70 HS get a 100x zoom? Canon 11-24L f4 resolution test now up on TDP

The Digital Picture now has the 11-24 up. I am really impressed at how it looks wide open at 11mm. When stopped down, it's crazy sharp! The distortion looks about the same as the Nikon 14-24, which is around 4%. Pretty good considering it's 11mm! :)

What do you guys think? Better or worse than expected?

Surfing Photos with 7DII

I loved the 7D, and while considering looking for a used 1DX, an upcoming surf competition pushed me over the edge into a 7DII. The extra reach with my 400mm IS was welcome. Even with 1.4X and 2X extenders, the 7D was the best choice for the distant action of surfing photography.

Review: Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L

HTML:
Keith at Northlight has completed his initial review of the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L. In case you’re wondering, ours won’t be done until early April. Keith’s review has lots of sample images and a great mix of technical goodies and real world thoughts.</p>
<p><strong>From Northlight</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>“The lens is impressive on so many levels – not least of which is the solidity when you pick it up.</p>
<p>I was initially expecting to see rather more basic distortion (barrel/pincushion) in the image at different focal lengths, I mean, this is what you often get with wider zooms?</p>
<p>Well no, the performance is what I’d expect from a decent prime lens right across the focal length range. We’ll have to wait for the detailed optical analysis to come in to see for sure, but from my initial week of using the lens, it’s performed excellently.”</p></blockquote>

Canon CPS Requirements

I'm at the point of gear acquisition that I think I would really like to have access to Canon CPS services. I have two 5D3s, a 70-200 2.8L II, 24-70 2.8L II, and 50 1.4.

I've looked at the Canon CPS site and it appears that it is restricted to people who are actually earn their living from photography. Per Canon CPS membership qualifications - "Professional Image Makers -Self-employed or an employee of a professional imaging business"

I'm a hobbyist with a full time job in another career field. I occasionally and rarely take a paid assignment but am in now way a "self employed" professional imaging business.

How closely is this scrutinized in the CPS membership process?

Wooden Canoes

We just suffered through the coldest February on record and the ice is 40 inches thick out back.... it has been 2 1/2 months since the temperature was above freezing and I am getting restless for spring and want to go paddling.... so I thought I would start a thread on wooden canoes....

To start it off, here is the oldest one of the fleet... an 1895 Walter Dean racing canoe

Will Canon Answer the New Panasonic HC-X1000? A 4K Camcorder under $4K

Seems to me, this price point at 4K will have a huge market, (selling to people like, I don't know, perhaps... me?):
http://shop.panasonic.com/cameras-and-camcorders/camcorders/HC-X1000.html

I realize it's not the sensor size of a C500 or FS7, but I think Canon ignores this 4K price/performance point at its peril.

Am I wrong? Thoughts?
