Canon great results in World Press Photo 2015 contest

Petapixel.com reported a breakdown of cameras (including DSLR, medium format and even Apple) captured the winning images of World Press Photo 2015 contest.

In a nutshell, 25 out of 40 winning photographs were taken with Canon, 7 with Nikon and the other 8 photographs were taken with cameras of other manufacturers. Interestingly, when the data were broken down further by separating camera models, 5diii captured the greatest number of winning pictures, followed by 1dx and 5dii.

Although the percentage of submitted photographs taken with Canon DSLRs was not reported, I found these results to be interesting. Another interesting observation was that Apple camera (iPhone?) captured as many winning photographs (only one though) as Leica/Mamiya/Hasselblad/Phase One/Pentax.

Actor Josh Hutcherson Joins Canon U.S.A. And Ron Howard For Project Imagination

HTML:
<em>The Contest Opens February 25, Inviting Consumers of All Skill Levels to Submit Trailers of Their Everyday Life Moments</em></p>
<p><b>NEW YORK, N.Y., February 17, 2015</b> – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced that actor, Josh Hutcherson, star of The Hunger Games franchise, has partnered with Canon U.S.A. Inc. and Ron Howard for Project Imagination: The Trailer, and for the first time ever, anyone’s life moments can become a movie trailer and inspire a Hollywood film. The user-generated experiment invites consumers of all skill levels to create and submit trailers of their everyday life moments, resulting in one winning trailer selected by Ron Howard and Josh Hutcherson, which will ultimately inspire a short film in which Hutcherson will star and produce.</p>
<p><!--more-->

“Josh Hutcherson is going to be a great addition, empowering a whole new generation to pick up a camera and realize they are far more creative than they give themselves credit for in their everyday life moments,” said Ron Howard. “I encourage people to really have fun with their storytelling; who knows, the kid’s birthday party might end up looking like a horror film or a trailer for a fantastic thriller that could truly captivate us.”</p>
<p>“I’m fascinated by filmmaking and recently sat down with Ron Howard to hear about the history of Project Imagination,” said Josh Hutcherson. “The creative process truly excites me, as does officially joining the cast of Canon’s Project Imagination: The Trailer. I’m really looking forward to starring in a film inspired by user-generated trailer submissions.”</p>
<p>Submissions will open on February 25 at <a href="http://imagination.usa.canon.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">imagination.usa.canon.com</a>. Until then, consumers can visit the website and get inspired by watching “The Trailer of Your Life” – a 45-second trailer about the project, leveraging everyday footage from everyday consumers. The site also includes Ron Howard’s tips for creating trailers.</p>
<p>Project Imagination: The Trailer marks Ron Howard’s third time partnering with Canon, a brand that aligns with his conviction that people’s everyday lives are visually and cinematically worth recording.</p>
<p>“We’re delighted to continue our great partnership with Ron Howard and welcome Josh Hutcherson to the project,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO Canon U.S.A.</p>

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art Lens Next? [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told the next Art series lens from Sigma will be an 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art. However, it’s not coming any time soon. There’s still a small possibility that a new 135mm Art series lens will arrive first, but Sigma feels there will be a higher sales volume likelihood with the 85mm focal length, and will do their best to get it to market first.</p>
<p>A new 24-70 f/2.8 OS DG HSM Art is also a possibility, as the chance of an f/2 version has diminished due to costs of development and production. One of Sigma’s biggest marketing strategies is a significantly lower price than the Canon or Nikon version of a lens. That just wouldn’t be possible with an f/2 wide angle zoom for a full frame camera. One example of a lens that hasn’t done well because it wasn’t cheaper than the comparative Canon has been the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/01/sigma-24-105-f4-dg-os-discontinued/" target="_blank">possibly discontinued 24-105mm f/4 DG OS Art.</a> Yes it would be a stop faster, but would people spend more on a Sigma lens that is a stop faster than the Canon of equal focal length? A stabilized f/2.8 Art version could probably be made for far less money and would carry much less risk for Sigma.</p>

AFMA changes since 5D MK III firmware 1.3.3 ??

Has anyone else noticed they need to re-adjust AFMA values for lenses since upgrading to firmware 1.3.3?

My 70-200f2.8L II used to focus accurately with W +8 and T +5. I've recently redone AFMA on this lens and it now seems most accurate left at 0 on both W & T. Admittedly I don't use software for adjustment but do it old styley, which has always been good for me.

If it was a very slight change I'd not be too surprised but this seems quite an adjustment.
Anyone had similar experience?

North American Customers--Availability?

Seemed like a month ago the new ef 100-400mm II wasn't going to be especially hard to order, that there were enough even for some promo pairings with the new 7DII.

Now, I can't find one from a big name retailer here in the US.

I'm wondering if this is related to the big cargo-workers strike on the Pacific coast. I know that Honda and Toyota are starting to have parts on back-order.

Any North American customers finding other lenses or gear on back-order?

Imaging Resource: Canon Q&A @ CP+ 2015

HTML:
Contrary to my previous post, Imaging Resource has posted what is a very good interview with Yasuhiko Shiomi (Senior General Manager, ICP Development Center 2), Yoshiyuki Mizoguchi (Group Executive, ICP Group 3) and Naoya Kaneda (Senior General Manager, ICP Development Center 1), all from the Image Communication Products Operations division at Canon Inc.</p>
<p>They cover an array of topics, such as autofocus, mirrorless, the video performance of the new EOS 5Ds, & EOS 5Ds R as well as their commitment to lens development.</p>
<p><strong>This could be good news for 5D Mark IV development for videographers…

</strong></p>
<blockquote>
<p class="spacer"><strong>DE: </strong>Okay. Switching to the EOS 5DS and 5DS R, the EOS 5D Mark III is the best SLR we’ve ever seen when it comes to avoiding moiré in video. Will the new full-frame 5DS and 5DS R have the same pixel re-sampling technology as the 5D III, or are there just too many pixels to cope with to do that, even with dual DIGIC 6 processors?</p>
<p><strong>YS</strong><strong>:</strong> The method is a little bit different. Essentially, as you know, the pixel count is higher in the cameras <em>[than in the video stream]</em>. So for that reason we wanted to improve the resolving performance in the videos that these cameras are capable of taking. For that reason, we went with a method that was more appropriate for those needs. So with 5D Mark III, in terms of resolving power resolution, it’s not quite where we wanted it to be, or where we thought it should be. So to kind of resolve that issue, we took steps to address that in the new cameras.</p>
<p><strong>DE:</strong> Ah, right. And so for video resolution, the 5D III is very good at anti-aliasing and no moiré, but you felt it could be sharper.</p>
<p><strong>YS</strong><strong>:</strong> Yeah. We were confident that the moiré would be suppressed. However, we felt the clarity, or the resolution maybe wasn’t where it could have been.</p></blockquote>

Commentary: Engineer/Management Interviews Tell me Nothing

HTML:
Thom Hogan has written a nice tongue-in-cheek article about engineering and management “interviews” after significant new products have been announced. He was especially turned off by the “t<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/02/interview-with-head-of-eos-5ds-eos-5ds-r-development/" target="_blank">he key man behind the development of the revolutionary 50.6 Megapixel Canon EOS 5DS…</a>” interview by CPN.</p>
<p>Thom takes the liberty of answering the questions in the interview, but this time with the ‘<em>correct’</em> answers. It’s a fun read.</p>

A test for Odin owners

HI. I have a particular work flow that requires me to adjust the power output on my 600EX-RT while being remote from the camera. I use a Camranger to trigger the camera, then evaluate the exposure on my iPhone and adjust the flash output as needed.

I have been using PW FlexTT5s for this but have some issues with them.

I have tried a ST-E3-RT, but using such a trigger will not let me change my flash power at the flash. I want to be able to have the flash in Manual and adjust as needed without having to go back to the camera, and the ST-E3-RT seem to lock me out of my flash. I can change the FEC at the flash when I am in ETTL, but I really need manual control.

So, I am considering Odins. Can someone who owns Odins and canon flashes to a test for me?

While using the trigger, can you change the mode on the flash from ETTL to Manual and adjust the output?

Thanks.

Canon 5D mk2 Firmware

Hi,

A quick Q, please excuse my naivete on this one...

... my 5D mk2 has Firmware 1.1.0, checking the Canon website there is a current version of 2.1.2

Do I update? Can I just jump from 1.1.0 to 2.1.2? How to I actually do the update? (Download onto CF and install from there?).

Please excuse my ignorance and blindness on this one, I can't believe that I've never bothered with a Firmware update before!

Thanks in advance!

Tamron SP 15-30mm - The Digital Picture IQ charts up

Looks like The Digital Picture's image quality comparison tool has the Tamron SP 15-30mm up.

Here's the comparison between the Tamron and the Canon 16-35mm f4:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=949&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=986&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=2

Looks pretty comparable at f/4. Edge definitely to Canon for corner CA but mid frame the Tamron looks sharper.

tamron 17-50 sharpness issues

i have a tamron 17-50 2.8 non vc that i bought used last year , so no warranty . i read a bunch of reviews before buying it that said it was a decent lens and acceptably sharp wide open. i have been quite disappointed with it , so much that i almost never use it and if i do it has to be at f8 which pretty much makes the 2.8 useless. i thought about sending it in for service but the cost for service plus original purchase would make it more expensive than a new one. i did a bit of googling and saw a few people that pulled them apart to try and repair them. i figured i had nothing to loose cause i dont want to pay to have it serviced and its basically useless as it is.
to start i popped the back cover off which was pretty easy then i undid the three screws (red arrow) and pulled out the first lens group and found 3 brass shims under it. the other 3 screws(blue arrow) hold another lens group(or at least thats what i think it is, plastic thing with glass on each end)and it had 3 brass shims also. i put it all back together with no brass shims anywhere and wouldnt ya know it , i had made it MUCH worse .
i figured i would put just 1 ship set back in at a time and try it . holy crap what a difference !. it is sharper at 2.8 now than it was at any other aperture before and focus is now good at least 90% of the time vs maybe 50% before.
here are some pics of what the innards look like and the last one is a crop of my eye shot wide open. its not prime quality of course but what a difference from before.
im not a very good writer so i dont know if this makes any sense to you guys but i thought i would share anyways lol.

Zeiss 25/2 with extension ring?

Does the Zeiss 25 mm f/2 (not f/2.8) ZE work with a thin (13 mm) extension ring? I try to decide between the 25/2 and the 25/2.8. Everything suggests the f/2 (overall quality, wider opening, aspheric elements, anomalous dispersion glasses) but it has a longer close focus distance/smaller reproduction ratio. I intend to use it for landscapes and plant portraits with flower in foreground rest of habit in background, so close focus is moderately important. I fully understand that image quality will be a tad reduced.
I never liked close-focus filters, which would be the obvious alternative; putting that on a ZF lens seems a bit heretical.
I know that the 21 mm will not focus at all with the 13 mm extension ring [or more precisely, at infinity focus, focal plane seems to be inside the lens].

January 2015 Canon Rebate Offer via B&H Purchase

I purchased a Canon 70-200mm lens from B&H in January 2015. I'm certain that a Canon rebate was offered, not an American Express rewards card. This past summer, I purchased a Canon 5D Mark lll and both were offered; I received a check from Canon in addition to an AMX rewards card.

For my recent lens purchase, a Canon rebate was again offered, however this time, the rebate form that I received post-purchase only offered an AMX rewards card! So B&H used the same terminology, but switched it's terms without notice. I called them, and they said that most people understand that 'rebates' are now rewards cards.

I took great exception to this, and told B&H that it was their responsibility to describe exactly what kind of rebate one is receiving upfront.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Next Zeiss Otus lens?

Anybody speculating on the next Zeiss Otus lens?

First we got the standard/55, then portraiture/85, now? I would think it will be a 35/1.4 (or 1.2?), a common art/street photography lens. Also conceivable is a 24/25 mm for landscapes taking advantage of 36/50 MP bodies. I doubt the 21 will get a makeover. The recent 15 already raised a number of eyebrows. Makroplanar also unlikely, and re-surrecting a 300/2.8 Apoteletessar or the old F-Distagon may not be viable on the market.

I wonder, because I'm about to pull the plug on an upgrade, replacing some old C/Y lenses (21 and 28) with ZF (21 for sure, plus either 25/2 and/or 35/1.4) in anticipation of the 5dSR. Would be a shame of getting a ZF lens now, only to see the same lens coming out as Otus version six months later.

Magnifier MG-Eb/MG-Ef

As I trolled (think fishing, not flaming posts) the Internet, I found this press release and an overlooked item - Canon announced the Magnifier MG-Eb/MG-Ef for EOS bodies:

http://www.canon.com.hk/en/corporate/press_release/downloadFile.do?filePath=pressrelease/2015/10998/New_Product_pr_eng.pdf

I'm curious about this and the fact that they announced it with the 5Ds/R:

Wedding Photographers; when do you get your most inquiries.

I was thinking about throwing some additional advertising dollars at Google and then I wondered if there would be a certain time of year that would be better than others to do so. So I started going through my inbox from last year to see if there was a pattern of when there was an uptick in interest. Obviously, summer is more popular time to get married here in Chicago, but just how far out are those brides/grooms reaching out? I did a screen cap of the past 6 months of e-mails coming in from my wedding photography website.

My list actually seemed pretty consistent - didn't know if anyone else had similar findings?

Decline in DSLR sales explained

This presentation was made at PMA recently by Heino Hilbig of Mayflower Concepts, a management consulting firm.
http://youtu.be/bfCJDIf-NeA

A complex presentation, it explains that the reason for the rapid decline in camera sales - which is followed by a lag of two years by a decline in ILC's - is not (just) market saturation, nor is it (directly) smartphones... it is more catastrophic than that. It is because the photo industry has failed to embrace the principles of easy, fun use that the smartphone industry has made so commonplace. The photo industry has clung to film-like standards and proprietary approaches that cripple it's attraction to new users. The industry has made communications with other devices difficult and constructed user interfaces that are complex and awkward. He cites simple examples like aspect ratio differences between cameras and printers, various memory cards for different cameras, too many dials/buttons/knobs for new users, etc. The good news is that these are all fixable things.

Watch it and see what you think...

My "Minimalist" Lens Arsenal on Crop?

In the name of trying to fight off GAS would you be so kind as to review my lens line-up? I pretty much do it all minus sports. My daughter's high school volleyball career is over and my son is about to kick off 4+ years in a pretty amazing high school marching/jazz band career. Low-level soccer will likely still be in the mix, though, and I probably won't do much college volleyball.
I also do a lot of portraits, landscape, street, travel, etc.
My camera is a 70D and will likely stick with crop. With that, does this make sense?:
- Canon 10-18
- Canon 35 2.0 IS (had a 50mm Sigma Art, but there didn't seem to be a whole lot of difference)
- Canon 85 1.8
- Canon 100-400 II (not yet obtained and will possibly sell my 200 2.8 since it's not used a lot and I could use the 85 when really needing the low light performance and the zoom when needing the focal length - although it might be tough at times indoors)
Thanks for any advice to include good-to-go, almost all the time, with those 4.
