Rear Gelatin Filter Questions

With a 11-24 f/4 on pre-order, I was thinking about getting some gelatin film(s) for the rear holder. If I remember, the holder on the existing lenses (14L, 8-15L, 17-40L, etc.) are all the same size. Can anyone confirm? If so, then it's probably pretty safe to assume Canon will stick with the same size. Also, does anyone know the approximate dimensions of the gelatin that fits? I thought Canon had a template in the manual or on a sheet of paper, but I can't seem to find that online - maybe it was from another manufacturer.

Senal SMH-1000 Studio Monitor Headphones Review (Dustin Abbott)

Hi, everyone, if you are looking for a great set of studio/field monitor headphones (or just a great set of general purpose headphones), this relatively unknown brand has made a pretty fantastic pair. I got some for myself after reviewing them because the sound is great (very neutral) and there is a lot of great little features.

Coincidence or?? MP/SEC

This is a ridiculous thought..

Canon 5DS / 5DSR - 50.6mp - max 5/sec burst = 253mp per sec
Canon 1DX - 18.1mp - max 14/sec burst = 253mp per sec

Two highest - when summed - figures from the Canon line-up in terms of image size.

As they use different processors is there another limiting factor? or is this just stupid?

My vote is stupid, but I wanted to share it nonetheless.

Am I expecting too much off my camera?

Why is the marriage between many of my lenses (Canon, Sigma, Tokina) and camera bodies (7d, 1diin, 6d) such a tumultuous one?
I mean, front focus, rear focus, somewhere in between focus...! If this was real married life, it would be "divorce galore" :o

So can any of the more technically schooled CR members please tell me why it is seemingly impossible to calibrate a camera (i.e. the autofocus module) so that it can handle any kind of lens and make it focus properly? Who is telling who what is focused and what is not in the first place: the camera the lens or the other way around!?

I would think the 'computer' in the camera has been taught what "in focus" means before being wrapped up in a box and send off to make somebody happy, and there for, as long as it is getting a decent reading from one of the focus points, it would kick the lens (even a Sigma one) in 'gear' and makes it focus spot on.

Too simple? :-[

Field of View - Canon TS-e 17mm vs Sigma 12-24mm

I want to take pictures of houses from a narrow street (the buildings are 5 to 11 meters high, the street measures 4.5 meters accross). I am trying to decide which lens will work for this project, Sigma 12-24mm @ 12mm and the camera on vertical position (portrait) or Canon TS-e 17mm also with the camera on vertical position.

I can do the math for the Sigma. If I place the camera on portrait position on a tripod 1.5m high and I stand 4m from the façade of the house, I can take a picture of a 8.7 m building.

I can´t do the same calculations for the TS-e. Could anyone help me? If I place the camera on a tripod 1.5m high and I stand 4m from the façade and shift the lens up all the way, how tall could I reach?

Thanks,
Antonio

Good reason to believe new APS-C cams from Canon use Sony sensor design

Hi guys.

I compared images from M3/760D to my own (M/SL1) and Sony a6000 (with some help of DPR test scene) at ISO 6400 and based on the output it seems to be very clear to me, that Canon uses Sony sensors/tech for their new cameras.

Here is some (okay, a bit weak, but let me explain) evidence:

Top two are this: Left one EOS M shot of my dark(black) PC case ar ISO 6400 JPG OOC. Right one is the dark cut-out of propably JPEG OOC shot from M3/760D of night town shot leaked on the internet. For example here.
Bottom two are this: Left one SL1 from DPR test scene, cut-out from the dark background. Right one is the same thing, but taken with a6000. The same mushing approach of Canon, the same approach on the right side from suggested Sony.
Similarity? Yes!

The empire will strike back....

"Sony Artisan Brian Smith: “someone might just make a 50mp camera for less than 3700 bucks!”

Sony Artisan Brian Smith commented after the Canon 5Ds launch:

Canon fired the first shot in the Great Mega-Pixel War of 2015, announcing a pair of 50.6 mp Canon 5DS cameras – This is just the first shot! Expect to hear more announcements soon… Who knows, someone might just make a 50mp camera for less than 3700 bucks!

He is likely “hearing” the same rumors I got….sounds exactly like the A7rII to me ;)

Sony has now plenty of time to “fight back” with the A7rII as the Canon 5ds preorders will start on April 30 only at Amazon. And shipment is June/July."

Camera Connect/Camera Window remote shooting and RAW files

I assumed when I got the Canon G7X that I could shoot RAW files when using the remote software (Camera Window) on my iPhone. After I got the camera and tried it, I learned that remote shooting only lets you take jpg photos even when the camera is set to shoot RAW. I am not talking about transferring files to my phone. I can understand the need for those to be smaller so they don't take forever to transfer. All I want to do is remotely shoot RAW files. Now Canon has come out with Camera Connect to replace both the EOS and Powershot remote apps. However, I tried the new software last night and it still only allows me to remotely shoot jpgs. Anyone know why it is limited this way or a way to get around the limitations placed by Canon? It seems like a simple remote trigger should be able to shoot whatever type of file the camera is set to record.

If you have super big Great White tele, how do you travel with it?

Ok, I got my 600mm beast. It came exquisitely double packed in good quality boxes, the outer box just a half inch bigger all around than the original box from Canon. And, all in all, it's about as big as a small doghouse!
So, I'm just wondering, if you have one of these monster lenses, DO you, and if you do, HOW do you travel with it? After seeing what my new luggage looks like after being checked, I can't really imagine checking it on a plane. If you do check it, you just let them bang up the $800 gray luggage, or you put that luggage in another box? Too big for carry on, and shipping it FedEx is scary also. So, I'm thinking the only way is by car or sherpa?

Upgrade to 70d or 760 d ?

Hi all,

My old 400d needs to be upgraded, so I had a look at the 70d and the new 760d. Comparing the specs, there's little difference between those two - at least to me.

One concern though is AFMA, which is only available at the 70d and absent on the 760d. So do you really need AFMA? Does it make focussing more reliable, especially with fast lenses f 1:1.4? I prefer to work with autofocus instead of manual focus. Can Sigma lenses be AFMAed as well as Canon lenses?

The other point is weather sealing, which seams to be at the 70d but not on 760d. But if WS is only basic at the 70d, this point isn't so important. How ist weather sealing on the 70d? Any damage because of rain/dust?

Batteries are also different: 70d gets 920 shots, 760d only 440 shots. But that's not important to me as I will use an additinal grip anyway because I feel more comfortable with an extra grip.

Another option would be to wait for the 80d as I'm in no hurry.

What do you think?

Not only Canon Users are hunting for better specs.... ;-) Alpha 7r II dreams

I read this on www.sonyalpharumors.com:
"So just to let you dream a bit …here is what I got and what you don’t have to take seriously for now:"

Ordnance Survey Photographic Competition

Out of interest, for anyone who has taken photographs in the UK, a new photographic competition has been announced by the Ordnance Survey, called the "National Map Cover Competition".

It is what it says - a competition to find the next set of photographs to use on the covers of the Ordnance Survey map ranges, which means they need at least 300, taken from every region in the UK.

Details are here: https://os.uk/photofit/

Let us know if you win...

After a 50MP camera what is the next breakthrough?

I'm sure at some point every piece of technology reaches it's point of perfection and can't be improved upon to any great extent.
What's next for Canon Cameras.
I know people want a great dynamic range but how else can cameras improve.
Will we have 30 FPS.
Will Lytro style photographs which can have their point of focus changed after in processing become the norm.
Will we have incredibly high ISO capability.
Will it be electronic view finders, better white balance, reduced size, in camera processing?
I am just wondering what people's ideas are of where the future lies in terms of camera technology.

EOS-M1 Japanese Version?

Hi,

I've just seen a UK based eBay seller offering a very well priced EOS-M who states it's a Japanese version with a UK menu. Is anyone aware of what differences there may be between a Japanese version of the camera and a UK version?

I was waiting on the M3 but for the price this one is going at I may well grab the M1 and give it a go.

Thanks

400mm DO II - sleazy sale by Amazon/Adorama

I googled

400mm DO II for sale

and found one on Amazon's site. $6400, seemed about right, ordered it. After waiting a week it got here and I pulled it out and started testing it. Didn't like the results (as an aside I own the Mark I version of this lens and I liked the results less than my lens).

Tried on 5DIII, nope; tried on 7D II, nope.

At this point I smell a rat, look for the Mark II on it, nowhere to be found, pull out my Mark I and they look identical. So I check the date code: UB == 2013. Pretty darned unlikely they built a Mark II in 2013 and waited until now to sell it.

I got sold a mark I lens for a mark II price. Noice. It's going back.

70-200 4.0 IS Best of Non-2.8 Bunch?

I already have the 85 1.8 and 200 2.8 for indoors and they are, you know... In stewing over a 70-200 4.0, 70-300L and 100-400II (for outdoors) is it safe to say that the image quality of the 70-200 4.0 IS is a notch "better" than the longer zooms? If so, would it make sense to go with the 70-200 4.0 IS for the pure image quality and then pair that when funds allow with maybe a Sigma 150-600 for when really needing the longer reach outdoors?
Thanks.
