What features would you most like to see added to the new 5DS and 5DSR?

So the official specs are out. What if anything would you like to see added/changed before the actual production models are released in June?

So far for me:

1. DUAL ISO - This seems so simple a firmware tweak to add in as ML did in their firmware hacks. A 50MP sensor in my mind is begging for this. Something completely customizable whereby you can select up to a 3-4 stop gap. 100 & 400, 400 & 3200, etc.... whatever you like. This would instantly boost the DR several stops on the Canon sensor's final output and largely eliminate the need to HDR bracket and merge shots in post.

2. Exposure Compensation in AUTO ISO - I've read where this is on the 7D2 and 1DX (came as firmware update). Would be nice to see it on this one too although I don't know if it's confirmed or denied that it already is or isn't.

Share you thoughts! Please keep it civil and refrain from the middle finger approach ;D

If we all start emailing/facebooking/calling Canon USA with these sorts of things, maybe they get dialed in before the release. Think about how they make decisions on firmware updates?

Projected DXO Scores .... And some POTENTIAL good news about 5DS ISO performance

Tony Northup has an interesting take on how the 7Dii has finally caught up in ISO performance to Sonikon (but not in Dynamic Range).
Also interesting take on DXO projected perceivable pixels.

One thing to note about this is Canon has been planning for high MP and has developed many lenses many of us already own that already can take advantage of high MP's starting with the 100L to all the mkii zooms and latest L lenses to even the 24/28/35 IS lenses that acheive close to the maximum perceivable pixels in the current sensor.
I don't think Nikon planed as far ahead in terms of releasing lenses supporting higher mp when you look at their lineup. Luckily for Nikon, there are 3rd party glass that can but have compromises (super pricey or sub par autofocus like Zeiss/tamron/Sigma/etc..)

http://youtu.be/Ww6QGpryrLM
He did make an error in calculating percievable mp on the 70-200 and 500 f/4. They should be HIGHER

Now it's digestion time on new 5Ds

Back when I bought the 1Ds3, I wanted a camera that could do all that I might want to do.
I didn't want my gear to hold me back from trying anything, from BIF to macro...it has served me well.

That was then, when I was younger and more able to be out and about...now, age is catching up
and am more likely to shoot indoors and, am more prone to consider "need" as opposed to "want".
The improved versatility doesn't seem to be as important as it once was. That ole camera has the
feel of that ole pair of slippers that sure do feel comfortable when lounging around.

Regardless, I read this morning that availability is June...lots of time to change my mind.

Focus peaking via usb on windows pc?

Kuuvik Capture seems to allow you to project focus peaking on (remote usb) live view with a Canon dslr. It is only available for Mac OS X. I have tried to use it in VirtualBox, but I cannot get my camera recognized by the Mac OS X (also Canon Utilities don't 'see' my camera there). In windows, everything works fine.

Since google didn't get me any further, I am asking here: who knows of a piece of software that runs under windows and allows you to use focus peaking on the computer screen with the camera connected via usb?

What current Canon EF lens will work well with the new 5DS/5DSR?

I know Canon has stated that the 24-70 f/2.8 L II and 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II lens are optimized for the new 50 megapixel sensor in the 5DS/5DSR camera but what other existing Canon lenses will work well with this beast of a sensor or maybe more importantly what Canon lenses won't be up to the task?

I currently own the following lenses:

1) Canon EF 17-40 f/4 L USM
2) Canon EF 24-105 f/4 L IS USM
3) Canon EF 85 1.8 USM
4) Canon EF 100 2.8 Macro USM
5) Canon EF 70-200 2.8 L USM

Will my present glass be able to handle this new sensor or will I have to upgrade some of them?

It may be quite a wait for the 5Ds and 5Ds R

The various articles that I read about the new full frames had gotten me hot to trot. I am excited about the 5Ds R as both a landscape and a closeup camera and was ready to pull the trigger. I'd assumed that today's anticipated announcement would mean that I could pre-order today and I was prepared to wait a few weeks for delivery. But, no one's allowing pre-orders at this time and to my dismay, the Amazon website says no pre-orders until April 30! That suggests that it may be July before these cameras are actually in consumers' hands. That's a long time to wait for a product and, to be honest, I wish Canon had either been quicker to get these cameras to market or had delayed its announcement by a couple of months. Getting my hopes up and then telling me that I'll have to wait -- probably for 1/2 year -- is a bummer. :-[

Canon Plays to the Base

Thom Hogan has an article about playing to the base http://www.dslrbodies.com/newsviews/canon-plays-to-the-base.html

"Playing to the base is best because it retains customers in your ecosystem. You took time to build that ecosystem, after all, so you want to maximize your returns from it. That means keep current users from leaking, ..."

In my case playing to the base is why I'm leaving Canon. I want/need mirrorless (YMMV). So playing-it-safe has cost Canon a long time customer (20 plus years) :(

Meyer Optik Goerlitz - new Trioplan 100mm f/2.8

Good news! For those of us who like sticking old bits of glass in front of our nice new shiny cameras, Meyer Optik Goerlitz have announced that we won't have to take pot luck chances at getting a Trioplan 100mm f/2.8 from ebay any more - from October this year they should be made available.

Using Chrome, the translate function seems to work pretty well:

http://www.meyer-optik-goerlitz.de/de/eine-objektivlegende-kehrt-zurueck-trioplan-f28100-mm/

The site also has information about some of the other lenses they will be making too. Yay for choice!

What's Next From Canon, NAB and Beyond

HTML:
While the announcements today had some positives and a big glaring negative (someone please explain their mirrorless strategy to me), Canon is far from done in 2015 and we’ll see a host of new products in the coming months.</p>
<p><strong>EF Lenses

</strong>We’re going to see a new 50 f/1.8 STM soon, as well as a new 70-300 non-L, non-DO lens. We don’t know exactly when they’re coming, but we’re told they definitely are. There are no other lenses we’ve been told about that are imminent. I wish someone would say 35L :)</p>
<p><strong>EOS Cameras

</strong>We haven’t heard anything definitive about what EOS camera would be coming next. The obvious choices are an EOS-1D X Mark II and an EOS 5D Mark IV. In case you were wondering, we haven’t heard anything about a replacement for the EOS-1D C.</p>
<p><strong>Cinema EOS

</strong>NAB is in April, and we’re told Canon will be making it a major announcement show this year. We’re told the Cinema EOS C300 will get a replacement and that it will shoot 4K. We haven’t received the same confirmation about an EOS C500 replacement. We’re also told there’s a chance Canon shows a new style of Cinema EOS camera, which would become the flagship and compete directly with the Arri Alexa.</p>
<p>I suspect there will be a lens or two announced, though we haven’t heard anything.</p>
<p><strong>Other Video Products at NAB

</strong>We’re told that Canon will announce a GH4 competitor for NAB. It will be some kind of 4K ILC camera, we’ve heard the camera will have swappable parts, such as the grip and the viewfinder. We have no information on what lens mount it would be. We are told that it’s an “entry level” cinema product.</p>
<p>We’re also told a fixed lens Cinema EOS C100 style camera is coming and could be called the XC-10 (this could change), and that it will shoot 4K. Since it will have a fixed lens, I doubt it’s part of the Cinema EOS family.</p>
<p>We will be at NAB this year and hope to bring some fresh content with a few partners.</p>

DPReview Interview with Chuck Westfall of Canon USA

HTML:
<p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/RSQTKM3nQ5U" width="100%" height="380" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p>DPReview sat down with Canon USA’s Chuck Westfall to talk about the Canon EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R. The interview touches on dynamic range, and how it’s about the same as the EOS 5D Mark III. Chuck also says the noise performance of these cameras will be on par with the EOS 7D Mark II. The mirror mechanism in the 5Ds & 5Ds R is upgraded from the spring mechanism inside the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, this will help in reducing camera vibration while on a tripod.</p>
<p>Chuck also answers the question about who manufactures the sensor <a href="http://www.shutterbug.com/content/canon-launches-506mp-eos-5ds-and-5ds-r-world%E2%80%99s-highest-resolution-full-frame-dslrs" target="_blank">over at Shutterbug</a>, and it is indeed made by Canon. Contrary to some nagging rumors over the past few months.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“Despite some rumors to the contrary, Westfall said the 50.6MP CMOS sensors in the 5DS and 5DS R are developed and produced by Canon. When asked whether they were created in collaboration with Sony as some rumors indicated, Westfall responded by saying: “Absolutely not. The sensors were developed completely in-house, by Canon.”</em></p></blockquote>

Best birding/wildlife combo?

While my business photography is primarily adventure, extreme sports, and commercial photography, my biggest side hobby/passion is birding and bird photography. Right now I have a 5D3 for my main body and a 70D as a backup body. My main birding setup, however, is usually my 70D with a 300 f/4L + 1.4 TC, I have found that since that is the longest lens I have, with the TC and on the crop body it gets a decent reach (672mm) and since I am still almost always cropping, I have found that the IQ holds up a bit better when cropping on the 70D vs the 5D3. So my question is, I have some money to upgrade, but not a bunch. I am wondering which might be a better combo for birds and wildlife: the 70D with the new 100-400 mk II, or the 5D3 with the 100-400 mk II + 1.4 TC, or keep my current 300 f/4 +1.4 TC and upgrade the 70D to the 7D mk II. Any thoughts on this, or experience with any of the aforementioned combs?

Thanks,
Brent

What do/don't you like about the 5Ds?

Two points to make up front:

1) I love my 5D3 despite it's "limited" DR :)
2) I'm fully aware that the 5Ds doesn't replace the 5D3, but merely complements the 5D line. Thanks goodness :)

So here's my list of 5Ds likes and dislikes:

Like:

- Canon users awaiting a high-megapixel body finally have a high-megapixel option.

Dislikes:

- No increase in FPS in crop mode
- Mediocre low-light performance
- No improvements in DR

Honestly, I was a million times more excited when the 5D3 was announced, as it addressed what were (IMHO) the most glaring deficiencies of the 5D2 (AF system and speed). I'm not a landscape shooter, but if I was I would have very mixed feelings about this body.

Why go through the trouble of designing a specialty/niche body that doesn't address one of the top priorities of photographers in that niche (DR, clean shadows)? Why market a product whose only advantage over the competition is resolution, while lagging behind in ISO and FPS? IMHO, 12 stops of DR is plenty for a general purpose camera like the 5D3, but a purpose-built landscape/studio body should at least attempt to bridge the gap between it and the competition.

I'm glad I'm not a landscape shooter, as the 5D3 will continue serving my needs just fine :)

Interview About the EOS 5Ds & EOS 5Ds R with Mike Burnhill

HTML:
<p><a href="http://www.fotosidan.se/cldoc/video-interview-canon-eos-5ds-and.htm"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-18713" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/fotosideninterview.jpg" alt="fotosideninterview" width="590" height="332" /></a></p>
<p>Mike Burnhill is with CPS for Canon Europe and did an interview with Fotosidan about the EOS 5Ds, EOS 5Ds R and how the product came to be, and what the design philosophies were for the camera.</p>
<p>Mike touches on why a large megapixel sensor isn’t ideal for 4K, or even 6K video, which sounds like we’ll see that addressed in an upcoming full frame EOS camera. It’s also interesting to note that Canon L lens design since 2010’s Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II has had high resolution image sensors in mind, and that every L lens since has been designed for use with these cameras.</p>
<p>You’ll get a pretty simple answer about whether or not shooting with the “R” version of the camera is for you. As well as why Canon decided to stick with Compact Flash over new technology such as CFast 2.0.</p>
