Euro Pricing for EOS 5DS, 5DS R & EF 11-24 f/4L Revealed

HTML:
<p>PhotoRumors has posted the prices of the Canon EOS 5DS, EOS 5DS R and EF 11-24 f/4L USM in Euro.</p>
<ul>
<li>Canon EOS 5DS: €3,499 (around $4,000 USD)</li>
<li>Canon EOS 5DS R (no low-pass filter): €3,699 (around $4,200 USD)</li>
<li>Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM: €2,999 (around $3,400 USD)</li>
</ul>
<p>I suspect the USD pricing will be directly the same as the Euro pricing, with the 5DS at $3499, the 5DS R at $3699 and the EF 11-24 f/4L USM at $2999. The rumoured pricing for the EF 11-24 f/4L USM has remained constant since <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/08/canon-ef-11-24-f2-8l-coming-cr1/" target="_blank">first being revealed in the summer</a>.</p>

So the 5ds price is more than the initial 5d3 release, but not that much more.

Looking at the current 1dx/1dc price drops, Canon seems to suspect internal competition pressure as the 5ds has a unique qualities which might make it a "flagship" camera. Will you replace your old 1dx/5d3, or even upgrade from another, cheaper camera?

Let's get a quick survey, with usually ~100 people participating it mostly generates interesting results.

Skipping the 5D-s. What do you want in 5D4?

The 5D-s will be $4k and a premium studio camera. Great for those who have the need and Canon responded in a way to the two year old D800.

For those who aren't going to buy this camera, what does canon need to do in the 5D4 to consider an upgrade? Assuming that the 5D4 will have no less specs than the 5D-s, What else need to be added on?

My list.

1. All Crosstype AF
2. Linked AF Point Spot Metering? (May be in 5D-s)
3. 1/250th Sync speed bump.
4. Bump to 7-8 FPS.
5. Dual CF
6. DPAF
7. 4K
8. Touchscreen
9. Peaking and Zebra
10. RAW 1080P Video or 4K if possible. (ML managed to do it. Canon can.)
11. IQ, Resolution Bump from 22MP to Anything below 40MP.
12. $3499.

I'm asking because i've been discussing this with my friends, and none of them are interested in the new line of 5D's... perhaps i'm just hanging around a skewed audience, so just curious... how many people are considering it?

For me, it does not seem to appeal... being a general all-found user, I have always like the balance of features in the 5DIII. 50mp does not add much for me, and the loss of FPS will hit me for wildlife as well as reduced native ISO.

6D Mark II speculation...

What could the specs be for the 6D2?

One way to speculate is to base it off of previous trends and behavior by Canon. I love the 6D, but Canon neutered it to protect the 5D3. That will continue to the case.

The 6D line is supposed to be the entry level FF for Canon. Some say it's going up market. Perhaps, but how much can it go up without hurting its own sales? The current 6D was over $2K at release. If it goes higher, who will want to spend that much and not go all the way to the 5D4? Those who can, will just get the 5D4, those who can't just won't buy a 6D2 at all.

I think it will stay in the same price range.

What about no 6D2 at all? I doubt it. Canon's lineup will then consist of several consumer grade crop cameras to a huge jump to a pro-grade body, crop sensor 7D2 at $1,800, then to another jump to 5DS and 5D4 cameras running over $3,300.

Let's look at the past:

The 6D is in many ways similar to the 5D2, but with a better sensor. Almost the same AF, resolution, speed, and one card slot. 6D is a little better overall though. However, it was the equal in sensor IQ to the 5D3.

If this pattern continues, the 6D2 should be similar to the 5D3 in most ways, but with a better sensor likely the same as the 5D4. Only difference would be one card slot, and they couldn't possibly give it the 61 point AF system. The 61 point system is just too good, and whatever the 5D4 has, it will NOT be leaps and bounds better. Figure, Canon wanted to protect the 5D3 to the degree that they gave the 6D 11 lousy points with only 1 cross type. They'll do the same to protect the potential 5D4 market who doesn't care about video. And don't say it was cost cutting measure. There are lower cost crop cameras with better AF from Canon!

Autofocus: Better than 11 points, inferior to the 61 point system. If I had to guess, they'll go lower than higher. 19 points. Something that will yield the same let-down, deflating, unimpressed feeling in everyone - making many long for a 5D4 instead. No intelligent tracking.

Articulating touch screen. This is an 'up market' feature LOL. Adds cost to the camera right?

Better sensor with similar MP (24 or less). Like the previous generation, Canon is OK with it being as good as the 5D series on low-light and DR. This makes the non-high megapixel still shooters happy.

1080 video that is slightly better than 5D3. Absolutely no 4K. No dual pixel.

One card slot - Canon's way of deterring non-video shooting pros from saving money by skipping the 5D4. Likely an SD card too. Canon says that is what consumers mostly use. True, but they're doing it more to deter pros who like the speed and reliability of CF and who have a collection of CF, not because they really care to make it more appealing to consumers. Whomever drops over $2K on a body, isn't going to gripe about the few dollars more for CF.

No more than 6 fps. 5 is more likely.

The only thing in my view that can cause pressure to improve those specs would be competition from Nikon, but that is unlikely because Canon didn't care that the D600 had several better specs than the 6D.

People are already lining up the D750 to the 5D3, and that is embarrassing for Canon, regardless that the 5D3 is 3 years old and the D750 is new. The D750 is a lower tier camera, and at lower tier price. The 5D4 will have to be better than it in all areas. That leaves the 6D2 to sorta compete with it, but again - Canon seems to care more about the 6D not competing with their own cameras than with competing with Nikon.

D750 has great autofocus - reviews say as good as 810 and the 810's is a match for the 5D3. For the 6D2 to match that, it would also need the 61 point system - no way because of the 5D4 which is probably getting the 65 point system.

D750 is 6.5 fps. We don't know what the 5D4 is going to have, but if it is a modest increase, it will be 7, if it is proportional increase like from the mark 2 to the mark 3, then it should be 8. Either way, a 6.5 fps 6D2 is too close.

Canon had no choice but to specialize the lineup

The 5D3 has been well known as the ultimate all-around camera. At its release, it was not good at everything, but great at everything. Great IQ, speed, AF, low-light, resolution, robustness, top-notch video...To beat it required spending a lot more money.

This trait of the 5D line is impossible to maintain due to the technological landscape and competition from Nikon.

The standard for video is now 4K. Canon must implement 4K in the 5D4. In my view, it is an absolute certainty they will because they cannot wait til 2018 to do it on the 5D Mark V. Or would they switch to a yearly update cycle? Unlikely.

There has always been the megapixel race, but it really escalated with Nikon's 36mp D800 series. These high megapixel sensors create challenges for camera speed.

Speaking of speed. 10fps is no longer limited to flagship models. This is another game changer.

For the 5D4 to follow the 5D3 proportionately and without having sibling models, it would need these specs:

4K video, a sensor of at least 36mp, 8 fps, 1.5-2 more stops of native ISO, at least another stop of dynamic range minimum, and at least the 65 AF point system with better tracking, dual pixel and whatever other advancements they could make.

That is asking a lot from one body that isn't a flagship.

Instead, Canon is saving the 5D4 from having to be the great do all DSLR by specializing -

The 5DS is the still shooters dream. High resolution. Something to answer Nikon with. Be the high MP kings again.

The 7D2 is the speed demon for sports.

What does that leave?

The 5D4 will be the king of DSLR video and low-light. It's the only place it can really stick out and shine. It will have to be big on video. Both video quality, features and AF. And again be the best at high ISO than any other DSLR. If it fails at either, it will not be as successful as the 5D3 was in its era. The 5D4 is appearing to be slated to being the ultimate event camera.

It will also need to be better on dynamic range. This is going to be the critical spec for a lot of people. Because in reality, ISO of 12,800 or over on any camera just doesn't have acceptable quality. Yes, it's getting cleaner, but cleaner isn't CLEAN. Thus, people are looking for better dynamic range at more realistic ISO that they commonly shoot at.

Also, to keep pace on speed - it will need to be 8fps. 5D2 was 4, 5D3 was 6...this needs to be 8 to be a good leap in feature. 7 is nice, but not impressive.

I'm hoping Canon follows all the way through on this specialization, because with a high MP camera with very high resolution, the fastest sports camera short of a 1 series, the 5D4 should be best at video and low light. It is fact neither the 7D2 nor the 5DS (based on the rumored ISO specs) are good low-light cameras. And it is hard to imagine Canon letting up on that.

Those are the 2 last pieces of the product lineup - video and low-light. And these two things do go hand in hand.

Pentax 645Z: Why no DXO test yet?

Anyone else find it peculiar that DXO has yet to test the Pentax 645Z? According to photogs that own both the D810/D800 and the 645Z, the Pentax absolutely blows the 36 megapixel Exmor into the weeds in terms of DR, ISO, and tonal range. This seems to support the Canon conspiracy theorist claims that DXO is in bed with Nikon :o

Seriously, though, various third parties have been testing the 645Z for almost a year now, yet the only camera that can top the D810 is conveniently absent from DXO's database. Makes ya wonder ;D

I bring this up not as a way of bashing Nikon, but because I'm genuinely interested in giving the 645Z a go. It would be nice to see a comparison between the 645Z and the currently top-rated sensor (D810), but I suppose that's not going to happen.

BTW, I posted this in the wrong section before, so my apologies to anyone that had to read it twice.

Off camera cord- how to connect it to cold shoes?

Hi all
I am assuming at least some of you use the newer cold shoes that don't screw on but allow the flip-lock system a la Canon to both tighten down on metal rails as well as push the locking pin in (e.g., Nisha is the brand I have, linked below- but Frio will have the same problem)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/764592-REG/Nisha_HTS_C_Accessory_Flash_Shoe.html
However, my off camera cord just has a square plastic plate at the bottom that is too loose in the cold shoe above. I am leery of using a screw-type cold shoe as it is too unstable and tightening it too much might break the plastic plate above.
So I was wondering, what is any solution have you all come up with?
Thanks in advance.

Best Lenses for the Canon 5Ds

I remember this being a very hot topic in the Nikon world, so let's get things started.

Looking at DxOMark's Sharpness scores, it seems that the best lenses assuming optimal aperture and perfect technique are going to be assuming Sharpness of 18+ on the 5DIII and 12+ on the 70D (no data for 7DII yet). I have also color coded the Top 10 on FF to see where they land on a crop sensor, which will probably be a better representation given the pixel density, which I'm guessing (I haven't done the math) will be diffraction limited around f/5.6:

Selphy CP910 print 4:3 photos no loss of image

Hi all,

Apologies if I'm asking a question that has already been asked. I did try searching the forums but I couldn't find anything useful.

I got a Canon Selphy CP910 for Christmas and I love the print quality compared with our All-In-One. I'm struggling with one thing though.

My digital camera takes photos at 4:3 ratio rather than 3:2, which is just how I like it. However let's say that I want to print a portrait 4:3 photo on the Selphy. Ideally, I want the whole image slightly smaller with an extra white bar along the top and bottom to compensate for the lack of data in those areas. (When you print using Snapfish, they call this TrueDigital.) Instead it lines up the top and bottom of the image with the perforations, and crops the sides.

Fair enough, I can understand that it doesn't have the settings to choose what I want. So I tried to fool it by importing the photo into a 6"x4" frame in PhotoShop Elements, and saving it as a 3:2 photo with white bars top and bottom and the full image showing at the sides. This works with my All-In-One, but I went to print it on the Selphy, and... it ignored my editing entirely. It printed it exactly as it would have done had I not bothered editing it - cropped the sides and pretended that my white bars weren't there. It printed the top and bottom right up to the perforations. Weird eh?

Has anyone got any ideas of how I can get it to print the whole image?

Thanks in advance!

Sensor Fabrication

Is it possible for someone to explain to me, in somewhat simple language, what exactly Canon has been doing in the past vs what Sony is doing now in terms of sensor fabrication? What in terms of the physical makeup of the sensor does Sony have going for it, and what was, or is preventing Canon from doing the same thing? And what are the hopes in technological advancements that we want to see in these new 50mp ff Canon sensors? That is if they are from Canon. I know everyone wants more DR and better low ISO IQ, but what physically needs to happen to the sensor for Canon to once and for all shut the mouths of the Nikon/Sony/I want more DR so I can push my files 5+ stops in post crowd?

Lenses to consider

Canon should consider an EF125mm f2.8 (crop 200mm) and a EF150 f2.8 (crop 240mm) possibly making the EF150 marco along the lines of the EF100 f2.8L lens. Currently excluding the EF180mm Macro lens Canon goes from 135mm to 200mm in fixed focal lenght in standard form.

If they can make both to the optical performance of the EF100 f2.8L or higher then I think they will sell reasonably well.

How much will EF 600mm f/4 IS ii hold it's value?

For you old timers, who've seen lenses come and go, how much do you think an EF 600mm f/4 ii will go for in excellent (9+/10) condition in a few (2-6??) years? I'm surprised how much 70-200 2.8 ii's have dropped in the last few months, but wonder if this more rare lens will hold up, or drop 50% like the others?
