Mirrorless vs. DSLR

Hey guys!

What do you think is better? I found a few articles about this topic which are very interesting:

https://photographylife.com/mirrorless-vs-dslr
http://kenrockwell.com/tech/mirrorless-vs-dslr.htm
http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=5479&news=migration+to+mirrorless+ditching+the+DSLR+Olympus+Sony+Fuji
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/dslr-vs-mirrorless-cameras,news-17736.html

They all listed other benefits and advantages of these cameras. So... what is your opinion to this? Which is better? What do you like more? Will DSLRs die?

Tell me what you are thinking! ;)

Yongnuo 600EX problem

Hi folks,

I picked up a Yongnuo 600EX-RT a few weeks ago. Great flash unit. The only issue I'm having is the settings not being retained when I turn the flash unit off and back on, even leaving the batteries in. All custom functions reset to factory default. I'm guessing it's a physical problem with some sort of built-in date battery, but I thought I'd post here just to be sure. Anyone have any guesses?

Any Mirrorless Cameras used in the Super bowl?

Watching the game from home, I didn't see a a Single Mirrorless camera out there. Pretty much 100% DSLR's.
I did see about 9/10 or more in the sideline using Canon and some big whites.
After the game when everybody was on the field, I noticed about 1/4 were shooting Nikon with some wide angle lenses.

What were your observations either from home or if you were actually there covering it?

A2200 remote mic

I would like to try making some You-Tube instructional videos. The biggest problem I see in others efforts is sound. Too often the instruction voice is difficult to hear. I was thinking if I could have a mike (wired or wireless) mounted on my collar it would probably solve this problem.

Can someone give my some suggestions?
Perhaps I am on the wrong track even considering the A2200, should I be using a different camera?

Thanks

Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 ==> what filters?

I have this lens in my kit for a week now and I am still looking to buy a filter for it. I just managed to purchase a (cheap) secondhand B+W UV filter 95mm (for protection). This is not a slim filter, but surprisingly there seems no additional vignetting due to the filter.

I have noted that CPL filters are a bit thicker than UV-filters and if you don't completely screw-in the UV filter, there is hard vignetting in the corners. This is suggesting that you need a slim 95mm CPL filter to avoid vignetting. Which CPL filters can be used on this lens without vignetting?

The order option is to use square filters. Since these large CPL filters are expensive, it is tempting to skip the round screw-in filter and immediately invest in a square-fitler option like this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NISI-150mm-square-filter-holder-for-Carl-Zeiss-Distagon-T-15mm-f-2-8-ZE-ZF-Lens-/281572652280?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item418f09b4f8

With this filter-holder you also have the nice option for gradient and colored filters.

For those who shoot with this magnificant lens: what do you use for filters and what would you advice?

Thanks a lot!
Niels

Help with 7d Mark II WB

I was wondering if someone who help me clarify the WB temperature setting on my new 7d Mark II.

When i click on the WB button and dial it to color temperature (K). I can't figure out how to change the temperature. If I go directly into the camera menu and select white balance, the top dial can be used to change the temperature.

Why is that? Am I missing something. My old 7d and 5d did not have this problem.

Image comparison for fisheye lens options?

First time post ~ just begun buying into Canon full frame after 20 years of using Pentax.

So looking at full frame fisheye lens options - has anyone seen any side-by-side comparisons of the images from each? Not sure if my search skills are lacking, but struggling to find much in the way of tests comparing more than one.

Its more out of interest to compare the 'stereographic' projection of the Samyang 12mm against the old Canon 15mm and various Sigma options (though not specifically the full circle kind)

Cheers in advance!

Help - I have an EOS500D - Looking to upgrade

I've had the EOS500D for a few years now and have accumulated some lenses:-
Sigma 150-500
Canon 50mm F1.8
Canon 85mm F1.8
Tamron 18-270 - Very tired now!
Samyang 800mm Mirror (Used for lunar photography)
Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro
Tamron 10-24

I'm just an enthusiastic amateur, mainly using the camera to photograph my daughter and her team cross country running, but also love macro and lunar photography, plus the obligatory pictures of my girls growing up and cat pictures of the kitten as she grows!

Possibly coming into some money (GBP), what would you do? EOS 70D or stretch it to the 7D MK2 or go full frame and trade some of the lenses?

Any advice, much appreciated.

My guess is at $7,5K for the 5Ds body. Since it is going to be announced in a week, it will be nice to go back and see who guessed correctly. Sorry no rewords ;)

Just found ISO100 won't clip normally

I've been playing games with my ancient 30D.. I use it for various things including astrophotography.. and if you shoot the moon then you want a low ISO, fast shutter and ETTR as close as you can possibly get to the right.

I use a program called IRIS for astro image pre-processing and it allows me to inspect the un-debayered image, and to run a simple command that tells you things like the maximum pixel value.. handy if you're looking for clipped pixels.

So anyway I was thinking I had something utterly wrong when I was pushing exposures way beyond what they should be and at ISO100 I couldn't get more than 3500 out of 4095 ADC counts. Then the penny dropped as I realised the sensor/buffer was clipping, but the ADC wasn't.

So go to ISO125 and I can just clip the image (get 4095), but also get about 25% less readout noise.

looks like I'll stop using ISO100.

I wonder if any other cameras out there are doing the same thing?

70-200 2.8L IS - making noises when IS on

My 70-200 IS (mark I) has started making lightly funny noises with the IS on. Like a sort of moving part and then clicking into place noise. Everything still works fine but I'm concerned there could be trouble on the horizon. With the IS disabled the noise obviously isn't there. Is this a common issue anyone else has had? I bought it right when they came out and have probably taken 30,000 pictures with it.

Backup body for extreme environment

hi everyone, I'm going to be living and working in Antarctica soon and I'm looking for a good backup body to take with me. My main body is a 7D mark I which I love and has pretty much everything I need.
I would be looking to use the camera for a range of uses across various environments (at sea, Falklands, peninsula, mainland continent, icebergs, low-light, astro, birds etc.) and would ideally need to be weather sealed and cold weather tolerant (-55 Celsius).
I'm going to be down there for 18 months so although my main body will be used most, it is a long time and all gear breaks, there is obviously nowhere to get it fixed/replaced should I need to.

I was thinking about getting a FF backup and wasn't entirely ruling out a nice and cheap 5D mark I, it's obviously old now but still an excellent body. I had even considered all the way up to a 1Ds mk III, so a fairly flexible budget.

It doesn't need to be FF but already have a great APS-C body so something different wouldn't do any harm and weather sealing would be very much preferable when I'm up in the more northern wetter areas.

Any suggestions?

And for some relief from all those megapixels

I found this great video showing how the rolling shutter on the EOS 7d (and presumably all other Canon DSL models)
http://www.dpreview.com/articles/7983095405/canon-7d-mirror-box-filmed-at-10-000fps
Fascinating....

It also shows just how robust the 7d actually is. I say to my friends that one of the reasons for owning Canon equipment is just how tough it is. Everything about these bodies makes them real users' machines - big positive buttons, solid build quality.... I also have an Olympus EM-10 which I acquired the other day. Now it takes great pictures but its toy-like build quality instantly puts me off using it except in good weather no-drop situations. Has anyone seen that video that that Kai guy (DigitalRev) did where he tries to destroy a 7d? I do feel tempted to go to the dark side sometimes for that high DR, but I love my Canon equipment too much for now. The 50mp jobs that are coming out do interest me but there's no way I could afford to get one for a long time, and given the need to upgrade my lenses while I'm at it.

The Empire Strikes Back - How 5Ds fits Canon's plan for a DSLR turnaround

Canon is finally acting on their deep DSLR sales troubles and have initiated a declared turn around by looking more at what buyers want. The high megapix cameras are the first steps in regaining Canon's lost ground. Equally exciting is the promise to "comprehensively" improve image quality.

But there is more. Because for once Canon has actually said a lot about how they see their market position, what's hurting their DSLR sales and what they intend to do about it (once again they have to note a double digit collapse y/y - this year by a staggering 17%).

This has naturally lead Canon Camera division to make some heavy soul searching - also trying to explain to owners and board what they intend to do about this.

So here is the story as Canon sees it:

The problem:

2014 DSLR sales down 17% after they originally announced the ambition to have flat sales through 2013/2014.

___

The analysis:

Factors entry users considered important at the time of purchase (Based on a survey conducted by a third party firm)

Top Priority Factors
•High image quality/High resolution

Factors Increasing in Priority
•Improvement in auto focus, speed, etc.
•Usability
•Size and weight
•Wireless communication

___

The turn around:

Products
•Launch new DSLR and Mirrorless cameras
•Enhance lineup of interchangeable-lenses
•Strengthen network affinity (Ex. Connect Station)

Marketing
•Expand photography workshops
•New users
•Users looking to upgrade to next level
•Rollout tailored marketing strategies that effectively reach targeted customers

*) Note: hope Canon does not think Connect Station is the networking we want to see...

___

The details:

"Demand for interchangeable-lens digital cameras continued to face harsh conditions due to the economic slowdown."

"...although sales volume of interchangeable-lens digital cameras declined owing to the shrinking market—in Japan as a result of the reaction following the rush in demand prior to the consumption tax increase, and in Europe and other markets due to worsening economic conditions—the advanced-amateur-model EOS 7D Mark II achieved healthy growth, enabling Canon to maintain the market’s top share."

"demand for interchangeable-lens digital cameras is expected to recover gradually"

"For cameras, efforts will be made to comprehensively raise aspects such as image-quality, visual expression, and operability. At the same time, Canon will work to further strengthen the network capabilities of these products."

___

My notes from the conference call:

Plan to introduce more DSLR camera models than previous years to stimulate additional demand in this segment.

Contributing factors to the double digit sales drop aside from weak market:

1. Heavy camera inventory stock in beginning of 2014. Difficult to reduce because of severe price competition. Have tried to keep prices up in spite of this.
2. Also last year Canon only introduced one new DSLR model which was not enough to stimulate demand.
3. Technological innovation was driven by pixel count competition. User needs have at the same time diversified.

These factors account for our double digit decline in units sales.

Still some bright spots such as healthy 7DII sales. Giving Canon confidence that innovative products can stimulate demand.

Appreciation post

I just got some old 8mm video reel converted to digital (taken on a Canon 514XL in 1978).
While its content is priceless I was struck by how incredible the gear we have today is in comparison.

Back to 2015 and the video from my 1Dx is stunning. Every time I put on a different Canon lens on my body I think - actually this is an incredible lens too! So thank you to all the engineers and scientists who have contributed to gifting us insanely powerful photography equipment.

Some people are waiting for the never to arrive tomorrow to be satisfied - incremental updates in dynamic range come to mind!

I seem to be having a very insighful and mindful morning :)

Big Boat Fell Over!

Hi Folks.
Didn't really know where to post this, not really sports, but most transport stuff seems to be here.
A few weeks ago the Hoegh Osaka was deliberately grounded after taking on a severe list to prevent it sinking, I managed to get to the seafront whilst things were still happening. A few of the long exposures I took follow, plus some others.
She is a vehicle carrier loaded with luxury cars and some heavy plant machinery, apparently once she started to list a large excavator moved and punched a hole. No deaths, some minor injuries and bruising including a couple of hurt prides from what I understand.

Thanks for looking.

What about the 6D mkii? Is the 12mp A7S sensor a possibility?

So it doesn't look like there is any competition for the Sony A7S. I think it would make good sense to release the 5D iv next summer or fall with a 24-30mp sensor and with the 1DX's true autofocus capability and shortly afterwards release the 6D mkii with a 12 mp A7S sensor with a 19pt AF and all plastic but semi weather sealed body (like the 70D) capable of recording 4K (presumably like the 5D iv) but crippled (in Canon fashion) to have only 1 SD card and no headphone jack.
