Canon Releases New Firmware: 5DIII v1.3.3 & 1DX v2.0.7

Seems like the story that came out a few weeks ago about the inability to downgrade from 1.3.3 once installed is true (according to CW).

Essentially that means no Magic Lantern support for 5DIII bodies fresh out of the factory... what a shame :/

The New Guy

I have always taken landscape photos with no lighting or flash etc.

This was an experimentation with our newest addition to family that came over Christmas! I definitely see things that could be improved, but I would love to hear feedback/critiques on technique, composure, etc.

Would it be possible to make an EF-S 15mm f/2.8 Pancake?

Something similar in size and build to the 24mm and 40mm Pancakes at a comparable price? I want to get an SL1 and the pancakes for their compactness and I've noticed a lot of my shots full frame are shot at 24mm. A 15mm EF-S would give us a 24mm crop equivalent.

Imagine walking around with an SL1 with a pancake mounted and 2 more in your pocket. It would be great.

In a perfect world though, and this is me dreaming by the way, I'd love an updated SL1, we'll call it the SLx. Same dimensions as the SL1, but better ISO performance, more DR, and faster burst rate. I'd also love 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm equivalent pancakes. What a kit that would be.

Time to wake up ::)

What's your experience buying refurbished from Canon Direct USA?

I've purchased new items from Canon USA in the past, and have generally been satisfied with their fulfillment processes.

I just bought my first refurbished lens from them last week (January 22nd), however, and the status has been "Order received and ready for processing" ever since.

I have an order number, so -- even though my credit card hasn't been charged yet -- I presume that I actually have an order in place for this lens (which now is shown as "out of stock" in their web store).

Does anyone care to share his experience with or knowledge about this process? Doesn't Canon prep the refurb product for sale and shipping before listing it in their inventory? Any reason why fulfillment of an in-stock refurb product should take any longer than a new one?

Black and White - Manta Ray Conservation

I am proud to post a project that I have just finished up. It is a short film project called Black and White. This is a bit different than my previous films. It educates about the issues facing the world's Manta Ray population. And also encourages the conservation of this beautiful animal. If you have ever been in the water with one, you will know what a special experience this is. Please Share this video to get the word out to as many people as possible.

Please Share, Like, and Comment!

I hope you enjoy it.

A Sony & Canon Sensor Partnership Mentioned Again [CR1]

HTML:
<p>Every few weeks, we get told that Canon will be using a Sony sensor in the upcoming high resolution Canon DSLR. Today was another one of those days.</p>
<p><strong>Direct Quote

</strong><em>“Canon will buy sony sensors for the next full frame cameras. but they are more a joint venture from Canon and Sony. Sony will make them and they will have EXMOR technology, for Canon they will get the DualPixel AF. <span class="s1">So it’s a patent exchange that helps both companies. S</span>ony will still sell the sensors to Nikon, but only without the DualPixel technology. Sony has the capacity to produce two lines of these 53MP sensors.”</em></p>
<p class="p1">I have yet to hear this from someone I know, it’s all coming from new and unknown sources. Take this with a salt truck. Thankfully, we won’t have long to wait to find out if this is true.</p>

Canon prime rumors? 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.8 and 100mm f2

hi

I'm wondering if there are any rumors on whether any of these lenses will be upgraded. They are all from the early 90s and lacking the ever so useful IS. I'm currently in the process of upgrading my camera gear and I'm at least considering either the 85 or 100mm but I don't want to buy them now if there is a newer models with IS in the works...

If you could rebuy your gear would you change anything

I recently sold all my Canon gear with the exception of my 70-200 2.8. I was hoping to downgrade some of it since I am trying to cut back to more of a hobby rather than pursue photography professionally. I just do not have the time in my life so I got a chance to get all my money I paid for my gear and even made a little. The question is I still need a body and a mid zoom like 24-70 2.8 II and a prime. I just am torn if I should wait a few weeks or take advantage of the 1dx rebates and grab a 1dx now and the 24-70 and wait for the rest till the announcement. Either way I plan on saving some for a nice vacation with the family. Any help would be appreciated.

Canon 70-200 ii Focus Breathing Numbers

Interesting Video I found that puts some Math behind the focus breathing of the Canon, Tamron, and Nikon 70-200mm lenses.
The Canon Breathes Outwards while the others breaths inwards. The crazy thing is the Nikon 70-200 VRii breaths down to 135mm at 7 ft while the Canon Breaths out to 229mm.

Does this make a difference to anyone in real life?

Sony A7 II Review.

Dear friends,

Gordon Laing of cameralabs.com just posted his complete review of Sony A7 Mk2 and i'd like to say:

a) Image quality is on the average side. Anyone who knows how to expose right to the...right, can easily surpass in post processing the so-called DR advantage of "Sonikon" (which usually ends above ISO400).
b) A7 ii video capability is a huge joke!!!
b) Sensors nowadays are very close in terms of performance, despite constantly being said otherwise.
c) Is this Sony's A7 2nd generation FF superiority? Thanks i won't buy one.

Conclusion, i have to say that i'm feeling really nice for keeping my faithful ML 5D3, going from 7D to 7D mk2 before XMas and choosing GH4 for occasional 4k video shooting...

Oh, pardon me, did i mention that video capabilities of A7 ii is a HUUUUUUGE joke???

IS Off: http://vimeo.com/117035037
IS On: http://vimeo.com/117035747

A motherload of moire and one of the jerkiest IS-On videos EVER, using the super-promising (???) new marketing BS crap of Sony, the 5 axis...Supershaker!!!

Always be lucky, healthy and strong. Always live your life with those you love and have joy.

Best wishes
Yiannis

EOS 1dx Problems

About 6 months ago I purchased a brand new 1dx through B&H and I have about 5,000 shots on it. All has been great until recently. At least three times now the first image taken with the camera is just blank/black. The camera fires, and I can hear the shutter. But, no image is recorded. It is almost as if the lens cap was still on! When I check the info for the blank/black image, all appears normal -- shutter speed, and all other info, etc., is recorded as if nothing was wrong. But, there is no image. For whatever reason, this seems to occur only for the first image taken after a week or so has transpired. Once the blank/black image is recorded, all subsequent images taken are just fine.

I am using a SanDisk Extreme CF card, 16GB, 60MB/s. I have formatted the CF card a couple of times, but that didn't solve the issue.

As a possible "fix" I removed the battery, hoping that might reset things. That didn't work. I had been using firmware version 1.2.4 (two instances of the blank/black image), and I just upgraded to version 2.0.3. That didn't fix the issue either. The problem persists.

The only "change" since I purchased the camera has been a recent home computer upgrade (iMac retina display). I am now running OS X Yosemite (version 10.10) and using both iPhoto (version 9.6) and Digital Photo Professional (version 3.14.40). A couple of times now when I have uploaded images to my computer, both iPhoto and DPP both run and are simultaneously trying to upload the images. This has resulted in a "freeze" or stall, with Error Code 70 popping up on my camera (two times now).

Any thoughts or insights on what may be wrong much appreciated. Perhaps I have a bad CF card? Or, is something faulty with my camera? I have called Canon a couple of times, and they have been great, but I have not been able to get a "fix." I may need to send it in.

B&H USED DEPT Supertele

Dear all
I wish to purchase my first supertele- preferably 300mm 2.8 IS version I for sports and maybe some wildlife with use of Tele 1.4III or (2III after I will purchase this one) in the future.
To cut story short. I wonder if anyone bought used lenses from B&H store. How their rating system for used lenses look in reality. Your thoughts and experiences
I'm not U.S resident so buying from CPW is not an option :( If someone ask me to pull trigger for Version 2
Any info appreciated

Canon 5D III and Zeiss lenses: focusing screen?

Since a couple of days I own the Carl Zeiss Apo Sonnar 135mm f/2 ;D

Wonderful lens, but focusing at f/2.0 is extremely difficult, even when using the green focus confirmation dot in the bottom of the viewfinder. Focusing using live view is cumbersome and quite slow.

1) Is it more accurate / easier to focus using a focusing screen?
2) Which type of focusing screen would you recommend?
3) What is the best place to order this? Officially, it is not supported by Canon to change the screen for the 5D III (only for the 5D II), but there is screens available including installation instructions, for instance here: Focusing Screen with installation instructions here: Canon EOS 5D Mark III Focusing Screen Installation Instruction

Experciences, suggestions, help, ideas and thougths are greatly appreciated! ;D

Heard this on CBC, Sam Droege puts a 5D2 and an MPE 65 macro to good use, stacking dozens to a hundred images to get the final result using a beer cooler for managing the light...
