• Poll Poll
POLL: Do you need 1/8000s shutter speed?

The 1/8ks shutter relates to my personal shooting style:

  • ... need it for: bracketing

    Votes: 15 9.3%
  • ... need it for: stopping power (please elaborate)

    Votes: 29 18.0%
  • ... need it for: fast lenses in bright light

    Votes: 93 57.8%
  • ... don't need it: but nice to have

    Votes: 55 34.2%
  • ... don't need it: couldn't care less

    Votes: 15 9.3%

Some say a body with "just" 1/4ks is unusable and not a real man's camera. That made me set up this poll because I wonder how the general CR crowd feels about this.

My personal experience is that the missing 1/8ks hurts most for bracketing w/o a nd filter. Otherwise the stopping power isn't as significantly different unless shooting rockets in flight and it cannot be "fast enough". When in doubt I'd rather opt for one stop lower iso, esp. on crop.

What's your take? Exercise your right to vote now or forever hold your peace!

New Nikon 300mm f/4 - with DO-like optics?

Like most Canon guys, I read the Nikon press release with a bit of yawn, but then I saw this:

Smaller, Lighter, Faster Telephoto

Nikon has also introduced the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR, the world’s lightest 300mm full-frame fixed focal length AF lens2, which is nearly 30% shorter and 1.5 lbs. lighter than its predecessor. Extremely easy to handle and built to suit the needs of serious photographers in the field, the new 300mm f/4 lens utilizes Phase Fresnel optical technology to help correct chromatic aberration and reduce the overall size and weight of the lens, making it easy to pack for any assignment. Capable of producing tack-sharp images and beautiful background blur at a distance, Nikon’s newest FX-format lens also features four and a half stops of VR image stabilization3, a VR Sport mode, VR tripod detection as well as several of the latest NIKKOR optical technologies including electromagnetic aperture control, a Silent Wave Motor for quiet AF operation, ED glass for further controlling chromatic aberrations and Nano Crystal Coat for superior image quality.

It sure sounds like a DO or DO-like lens.

Update: Yes, it is - here's the description from Nikon's lens page:

Phase Fresnel
Phase Fresnel (PF) lens elements effectively compensate for chromatic aberration and ghosting when combined with ordinary glass lens elements. The PF lens element is based upon the Phase Fresnel lens, which appears to have a series of concentric circles engraved onto it. Utilizing a Phase Fresnel lens element allows Nikon engineers to use fewer lens elements, resulting in a more compact and lightweight lens. Due to the characteristics of a PF (Phase Fresnel) lens that utilizes the photo diffraction phenomenon, when there is a strong light source within the frame or when light enters the lens from outside of the frame, ring-shaped colored flare may occur according to shooting conditions. This phenomenon can be minimized with “PF Flare Control” to be included in Capture NX-D (ver.1.1.0 or later). For more information, see software Help/manual. Capture NX-D is available from the Nikon website. Be sure to keep your software up to date.

It's interesting to see that they are using software to tame the flare issues.

Traveling to Europe... debating what gear to bring. DSLR or EOS M?

My current lineup:

EF: 6D, 16-35 F4 IS, 50 1.8, 70-200 F4L

EF-M: EOS M, 22mm 2.0, Rokinon 12mm 2.0

Some old M42 mount lenses. super takumar 50 1.4, 50 2.0, 135 2.8

I am going to Barcelona, Paris, London for two weeks. Leaving in 10 days. I know Barcelona is infamous for pickpockets so I'm scared to bring the nicer, more expensive stuff out. Doubt anyone would try to (or be successful) at grabbing a bunch of my gear off me but you never know. Not to mention size and weight.

Right now I'm leaning towards a tripod, 90 EX flash, EOS M, 12mm 2.0, 22mm 2.0, 50 1.8 (bringing the EF adapter of course) and a small vintage vivitar 135mm 2.8 prime with M42 adapter for when I need reach in a pinch. So I'd have 18mm, 35mm, 80mm and 216mm (or so) covered. I'd stay light and small.

Or do you guys think I'd regret not having that full frame goodness for when I want to take some artistic shots (bokeh) or do some heavy handheld street photography in low light? over thinking the pick pockets? If I bring the M, i can go stealth.

Anyone have this dilemma and found a sweet spot for travel use? I'm missing a good fast lens for the 6D. Working on that. if I had a 35L again, i'd probably just bring that.

The 6D + 16-35 F4L would be nice too. The IS would help for museum/interior shots. or general night photography. The range is nice too vs. the 12mm 2.0 (18mm) on the EOS M.

New Canon 100-400mm Mk2 lens with 2x extender mk3

Hi,
Got the new 100-400mm mk2 lens and have been using it with the canon 2x mk3 extender. As it says it wont auto focus but trying to use live view at 400mm (ie800) is a nightmare. I have a decent tripod but the image still jumps around as you try to focus and I cant say I have actually managed to focus successfully. The images are very soft/ out of focus. I appreciate the quality will be degraded but they seem to me to be next to useless. Plus the degree to which I have to try and focus back and forth to find focus says to me this combo is useless for any wildlife that does not stand still for 5 minutes! I have two questions.
Anyone else experienced issues using the 2x extender?
Do you think this combo should be limited to the 1.4x which can at least auto focus?
I have a 5D mk3 camera.

Nikon D5500 adds touchscreen and flat picture profile

Where are the XXD Cams that meets these (AF, MP,...) specifications? Is there an 80D in the near future planned????

The 5500 moved up in the price (+200$!!). Let us see, if the + is worth the money

Geminid Meteor Shower Composites

To all,

Here are four Geminid Meteor Shower composites I created from two nights of imaging. They were taken on the nights of December 13th and 14th. I took approximately 5500 images using four cameras. I used two 5D2, one 5D3, and one 1DX. I rented the 5D3 and a Zeiss Distagon 15mm f/2.8 lens.

The first composite was created from 18 images. Each image was a 60 second exposure at ISO 3200 unguided on a German equatorial mount. The camera was an unmodified Canon 5D2 with a Canon 14mm f/2.8L lens stopped down to f/4.0. Each individual image was processed in Lightroom. The composite was done in Photoshop CC.

The second composite was created from 24 images. Each image was 20 or 25 seconds at ISO 5000 on a fixed tripod. The camera was an unmodified Canon 5D3 with a Canon TS-E 17mm f/4.0L lens stopped down to f/4.5. Each individual image was processed in Lightroom. The composite was done in Photoshop CC.

The third composite was created from 18 images. There was a very faint aurora that began just after moonrise. I could not see it visually, but the camera easily picked it up. Since the underlying image was taken after moonrise and later in the night, I had to remove some of the meteors from the second composite since they were outside the field of view; however, I was also able to add a few new ones.

The final composite was created from 30 images. Each image was 30 seconds at ISO 6400 on a fixed tripod. The camera was a Canon 1DX using a Canon 8-15mm f/4.0L lens at approximately 8.5mm with an aperture set to wide-open. Each individual image was processed in Lightroom. The composite was done in Photoshop CC. The crescent Moon had just risen, illuminating the underside of the cloud feature in the east. The shadowed feature at the bottom is a bird house.

Thanks for looking,

Wade

7D MII - Nice features and Question about setting

Hi

I just my 7D M2 and really like the option to have multiple My Menu tabs. It would be great if Canon would add these to their existing cameras (1Dx, 5D M3, 6D, 70D).

A couple of observations - I can not figure out how to turn of unused metering modes. I only used evaluative and spot, never use central weighted or ....

Also found that they focus was a bit soft with my 200-400. The camera arrived Wed and Thursday I took it on a family trip (mostly shake down). I did a bit of AFAIM (I think +7 at the long end of the lens), with my 1Dx I don't need a AFAIM on this lens.

I have not had time to test other lens on this camera yet.

Speculate: How much noise improvement from 5D3 to 5D4?

I realise that the 5D4 hasn't been announced yet, but I'm curious on views about how much improvement in noise we might expect going from the 5D3 to the 5D4 (assuming it comes out in the first half of this year).

I note that the 7D2 has about 1/3 stop noise improvement (via increased sensitivity) from the 7D, which is disappointingly low.

I love low-light photography, and am really hoping for 1/2 to 1 stop improvement (although I appreciate 1 stop improvement would be a huge stretch). Getting ISO 25,600 to the point where it is seriously usable (like ISO 12,800) would be fantastic.

Many thanks!

Expect Higher End Products at CP+ in February

HTML:

I have received a lot of emails, tweets, and Facebook messages about the lacklustre announcements from Canon today. Canon generally doesn’t make a big splash at CES, which is a very broad consumer electronics show. You get lost in TV’s, software, phones and every other gadget one can think of.

I’d expect we’re going to see higher end products announced for CP+ in Japan, which runs from February 12, 2015 until February 15, 2015. Announcements for different types of products may trickle out in the weeks prior to the show.

What could we expect for CP+?

I expect we’re going to see the rumoured/confirmed large zoom, large sensor PowerShot. The specs from the other day could be this camera.

The EF 11-24 f/4L could also make an appearance, this lens has been all but confirmed. We will probably see a new Rebel in the next month or two, so that could appear for CP+.

As for the high megapixel camera? This could be a show we get at least a development announcement as I do expect an announcement for this camera to come before NAB in April.

More to come….

24mm - Digital Photography's magical focal length?

Like the majority of us on this site, I tend to read something about photography on a daily basis and I try to absorb as much as possible.

One of the things that I've noted, is the popularity of the 24mm focal length.

It certainly is a focal length that is present in many different lenses and as I'm typing here, I can think of at least 8 lenses that have 24mm in it's range.

I have one lens which incorporates this focal length and that is my 24-70 mkii.

But I have a confession to make, I can't 'see' photography in 24mm and I think I'm losing out on what may be the most versatile focal length in digital photography. In fact, I would ask, is 24mm to digital photography what 35mm was to film?

What I mean by 'see' is that when I'm shooting with my 100mm macro or 400mm, I can envision what I want to capture and snap the shot.
I think a big reason for this is that I know what appeals to macro photography and bird/wildlife photography so I kinda have a feel for the 'psychology' of these focal lengths.

I am however stumped as to what I can do with the 24mm focal length.

Is it best as a people lens? What does it bring for landscapes? What other genres benefits from shooting at 24mm?

This may be somewhat of an odd question and I can imagine many wouldn't find this topic interesting but I fear I bought the 24-70 in a question to own the holy trinity but I never envisioned what to do with the lens.

I'm looking for that EUREKA moment where I get what this lens and specifically 24mm is about and will know instinctively to use this lens in a specific scenario.

Once again, I understand if this thread only returns a few replies (actually I'm hoping for just one :D) but I'm looking to explore different aspects of photography this year as opposed to being fixated on gear talk and tech babble.

What do you guys 'see' when you reach for your 24mm? What do you expect from the final image?

LuLa dudes really like the XT1 - and why shouldn't they?..

I'm not really surprised that they do.
I like shooting with my XT1 and the images OOC can be ready-to-go in many instances. When not, the raw files are very malleable and the stabilized lenses are very good indeed.
With the grip carrying an extra battery I can also do quite a bit of shooting in a day.

This review is for the mirrorless skeptics, the EVF skeptics, and the SLR die-hards.
As Kevin Raber states, it's all about the end result. And, spoiler-alert, he's quite pleased with it.
I have to concur, I often find myself just grabbing a tiny bag with 3 Fuji bodies with lenses and I'm good to go on pretty much any of my subjects. The full-frames and even my crop DSLRs are left on the shelf more and more.

Re: Railway odds and ends...
I had the great pleasure to record an interview with Alistair Urquhart, author of 'The Forgotton Highlander', recounting his time as a PoW slave, building this railway, I subsequently read his best selling book, and of how the PoWs conspired to compromise their work in defiance. I don't know if I would feel safe crossing the bridge.

Wow, Wow, Wow, Dear Friend Mr. Tinky.
You are Lucky man to create history of Mr. Urquhart---Yes, Sir, With in a week, I will post the Photos of The Cemetery and The the POWs Camps in this Karnchana Buree, The Bridge of River Kwai for our friends to see.

Yellow bands - why so easy to encounter in video rather than still shots?

Just out of curiosity, why is it that when under flourescent lights, it's so easy to encounter yellow bands from the lower frequency of the light vs the shutter speed - yet in still photo mode, I encounter it much more rarely?

I was just tinkering with this question and shot a burst of photos under flourescent lighting. Of over 20, only 3 had any visible band, even though the shutter speed was very high.

Any idea on new 45 a and 90TSE

On July 11, of 2013, the Forum admin posted that updated 45 and 90mm tilt-shifts were likely in 2014 based on his source(s).

Has anyone heard ANYTHING about these updates? I am so wanting a 45 TSE updated and constructed like the my 24-TSE M2.

(There had been a post in CR late fall'of 2013 suggesting a 45Mk2 TSE was likely due by late spring of 2014. When no word of this lens surfaced by summer, I hoped it would unveil at Photokina. But no such luck.)

Thanks for any insights.

If you could only use one lens for landscape photography, which one and why?

Hi guys

For all you out there doing landscape photography; I'm very interested in hearing about what would be your choice if you could only use one lens for shooting landscapes. Whether it would be a super wide angle, telephoto, something in between, zoom, prime, or maybe a specialty lens such as a tilt shift or macro?

(One other point that is beneficial to note is what sensor size you would use that with; full frame, 1.3x crop, 1.6x crop.)

And to try to avoid this being just another thread where various people list all the lenses in Canon's lineup, I would be very interested in why you would choose that particular lens for your needs.

Hope this is not another dreadful repetition. I couldn't find anything like this in regards to landscape photography.

- Alex
