Tamron 24-70 or Sigma 24-105?

Tamron 24-70mm F2.8 vs Sigma ART 24-105mm F4.0
Hi Fellas! im between these two lenses as my next investment.
Does anyone have these two lenses?
which one is sharper?
Which one would you choose for landscapes and portraits and why?
The downside of the sigma is its f4.0 widest aperture. As i like Bokeh very much
its been difficult to decide between these two.
Opinions? Thank you

Btw it is for my 6D.

100D + 24mmSTM + 40mmSTM

I shoot with a 5D MKIII, but my wife finds it far too big and heavy, so i bought her a 100D and a 40mm.. she loved it! It even fits in her handbag (which apparently is a very important factor).

Now that the 24mm is out her kit is now becoming very appealing... Although 24mm on crop isn't so wide, it is only a little longer than a 35mm prime on a FF, which is a focal length i can deal with. the 40mm on a crop is actually pretty nice as a portrait lens.

This is now becoming our travel kit for weekends (well unless there is something specific i want my 5D for).

Anyway, it is a cheap (ish) great small light kit. no big surprises here, just happy my wife is happy and happy 'we' have a small travel kit! :)

I would recommend this set-up to most people. :)

EF 400mm f/5.6L USM vs Tamron 150-600?

I've started kicking the tires for a super telephoto - EF 400mm f/5.6L USM vs Tamron 150-600?

The reviews on Amazon for both are great. With either, I'd try a 2x III converter, which I already have.

I would be using it for sports, birds and wildlife at National Parks/wildlife refuges and zoos.

I will be using it with 60D/6D, which I have today, and maybe/probably later, the 7DII

Feedback?

Thx

Thinking about upgrading to a 6D from a 60D. Thoughts?

I've been using a Canon 60D for the past three years now and I am looking to make the jump to full frame. I don't know what the best course of action would be when it comes to getting rid of my current camera. I have a bunch of EF lenses I'll keep for my next camera and then my only EF-S lens is the 15-85mm. Is Adorama good when it comes to trade ins? I just moved to the United States so I've never used them before. I submitted a form and stuff listing my camera and the lens. How much do you think I'll be able to get for them? Both the camera and lens are in near perfect condition.

Thanks!

Anyone here switch from Canon to Sony A7r for landscape?

My main focus is landscape photography. I sell my photos once in a while and this is just a hobby for me. I also like to shoot action and video, but now strictly use my 7D II for that. If I purchased a Sony A7r, it would only replace my Canon 6D.

Eventually I would switch over to all Sony E lenses to bring into the field. The ease of packing a smaller backpack on long hikes, with a camera and lenses that are twice as light, if not more, is what I am after. I know about the larger MP and DR that comes with it and I will take it, but it's not the game changer here. I am extremely pleased with Canon 6D colors and quality. My largest print requested has been 30x40, so more MP really isn't needed for the most part. It's all about the comfort I would get and sparing my back as I get older. I'm so pleased with the 6D that I am scared to switch over and try the Sony.

If you have switched, have you noticed a bit of a difference from colors changing in your work comparing a raw image? Kind of like seeing colors from a Nikon compared to Canon!
Are you shooting with Sony lenses now and how would you compare it to the Canon glass?
Are you generally happy, or very happy with the change?

Thank you in advanced.

Question Sir/ Madam.

Just one question to my dear teachers and dear friends.
Why canon Company not just Do EF 24 MM F/ 2.8 STM Pancake for Canon Full Frame Cameras( Similar to EF 40 mm F/ 2.8 STM, Pancake)---BUT why they just do EF-S 24 MM and sell us now ?
No, It not make sense to me, EF Lens can use all Canon EOS Camera bodies and Canon can sell more of this EF Lenses, BUT Only EF-S can use with Small Sensor EOS Cameras only.
Yes, I will buy EF-S 24 mm Pancake Lens and use with Canon extention tube with my 1DS, and 5D MK II.
Thanks you, Sir/Surapon

Hi Folks.
Just for giggles and to save hijacking someone else's post, do you RTFM, and what drove you to it?
I first resorted to RTFM as a child many years ago when I was trying to build a Technical Lego tractor from the picture on the front of the box! It hadn't gone too well, not as simple as it was to build the standard Lego cars and such just from the box image!
Technical Lego was new then, before it was called Lego Technics!
Since then I have tended to Read The Flamin' Manual first for most stuff.

Cheers, Graham.

Review: Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Pancake

HTML:
<p>Bryan at the-digital-picture has completed his review of the Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens. This lens seems to be the APS-C equivalent of the 40mm f/2.8 STM for full frame shooters and looks to be just as highly regarded.</p>
<p><strong>From TDP

</strong><em>“At the end of the 40 STM review, I made a statement that also applies to this pancake-style lens: “Overall, I’m finding very “little” to not like about this tiny, inexpensive lens.” It is fun to joke about this little lens, but … it is the real deal. Not only will it get the job done, it will do the job as well or better than many other lenses. And for a lower price. It is not hard to justify this purchase.”</em></p>

Which mf split screen for 5d2/6d?

A friend of mine is about to buy a mf screen for his 5d2 and asked me which to get. Does anyone have any experiences with the actual products and knows if it's "worth it" getting the expensive ones? How is the performance, i.e. drop in light and dodgy metering?

This seems to be the "better" one(?): http://www.focusingscreen.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_98&products_id=761

This is the cheaper one (yes, .de site, but you get the picture): www.amazon.de/Delamax-Schnittbildmattscheibe-180°-für-Canon/dp/B003UUDL94/

Thanks for sharing any experiences!

85 1.2 Clipped Bokeh

I just bought an 85 1.2. Can anyone explain to me why the bokeh is clipped off on sides of the discs? My 135L doesn't do that.

From what I have read online it sounds like it is related to the mirror box. But then why don't my other lenses do that? Not sure I like the shape of the bokeh...

Preliminary comparison 7D MK II vs. 1D MK IV

Not scientific at all but shot under identical conditions using the same 100-400 lens at 400mm with identical processing, f/8, 1/1000, and iSO 500. The first image is the 1D MK IV, the second is the 7D MK II. Make of it what you will. I used auto-ISO by the way, on both cameras. Distance to the subject is around 10-feet.

Octopus and More!

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share my latest episode in the 'Rolling in the Deep' series. This time taking a look at the critters in Milne Bay. PNG is a terrific destination, and Milne Bay is an area where it can offer both fantastic macro and wide angle photography.

Shot with a 5dII and a 100mm macro lense with a wetdipoter +10 magnification.

As always comments are welcome. Let me know what you liked and didn't.

Enjoy!

GPS Logger with 7D MKII

Hi,
I have the 7D MKII for 2 weeks, and yesterday started testing the GPS functions.
I have GPS enabled, Logger enabled, Update intvl every min.
The Geotag function works fine, all images have the GPS data and LR places them on the map accurately.
But EOS Utility just cannot find the tracking log, tried it a number of times.
I downloaded EU 3, thought it would be better, still no tracker log file.
When I use the in-camera function to copy GPS log to card, it looks like there is a log file there, but still EU does not recognize the file, either in memory or on the card.
Can anyone help with this issue - many thanks in advance.

Is this actually what I should expect from my Canon 70-200/2.8 IS II?

EDITED FOR CLARITY 12/10/2014 00:33 EST.

Note (12/12/14), I've posted my own chart shots on pages 2 and 3 as per request, and have also posted additional images that may be relevant in answering this question.

The Digital Picture has crops of an ISO 12233 type chart shot via the 70-200/2.8 IS II. Link Here (pictures included inline below)

My chart shots look nowhere near that level of sharpness, especially at the corners. It does however look just like the chart shots taken by Martin Bailey and posted on his site (link here - images also posted inline with post below)

I'm just trying to figure out what I am supposed to be seeing, and whether my lens needs to go back to Canon again.

The Digital Picture unfortunately don't have a 5D3 body option, but I imagine my 5D3 should be as good as far as sharpness is concerned. The Martin Bailey pictures were shot on a 5D3 as far as I understand.

Here are the images from The Digital Picture

@70mm

@200mm

Here are the pictures (or rather animated gifs) posted by Martin Bailey on his site:

This is the part that's been bugging me as it looks perfect on the TDP chart shot, but this is much closer to what I'm seeing:

The Problem between the two: TheDigitalPicture shows me crisp clean corners at 70mm and 200mm, a tiny bit less so at 100mm and 115mm, but still WAY sharper than the gifs from the Martin Bailey Photography website, which show more or less what I'm seeing, which is very different from the crops TDP is displaying.

Which is closer to what I should be expecting?

70D/7DII vs 5DIII + TC

This is not yet another of the endless crop vs FF (famous last words) but a focus on a particular situation, which is of interest to some of us nature photographers who slap TCs onto our telephotos and plug them into a 5DIII or 1DX. How well would we do if we use the 7DII or 70D instead of a 1.4xTC, or a 7DII or 70D + 1.4xTC vs 5DIII + 2xTC?

The answer will depend to a large extent on how sharp the bare lens is because the crops are very intolerant of soft lenses. So let's do this for really good lenses. The addition of a 1.4xTC will cause a small degradation of image but cut the light for a factor of 2 on the FF, compensating for the smaller pixels in the crop sensor. First is a photo (100%) crop of my favourite medieval brick chimney. The 300mm/2.8 II + 1.4xTC III on my 70D at iso640 is at least equal to my 300mm/2.8 II + 2xTC III on my 5D III at iso1250.

Below, are centre crops from the standard chart (printed out on rough photocopy paper). Again, The 300mm/2.8 II + 1.4xTC III on my 70D at iso640 is at least equal to my 300mm/2.8 II + 2xTC III on my 5D III at iso640.

Two further points. The 300mm/2.8 II + 2xTC III on my 70D has lost some IQ, and it is probably worth sticking to the 1.4xTC. The Tamron at 150-600mm at 400mm on the 70D is quite good and is much better than at 600mm on the 5DIII.

So, these tests have made up my mind for me. I am going to use the 100-400 II on a 70D or 7DII as my hiking/birding lens. I think that the new 400 DO II on the 7D II will be better than the 300/2.8 + 2xTC on the 5DIII for hiking/birding. Let's wait and see.

A new high end camera

In everyone's opinion, what are the chances of a high end 1DX mark II or another top of the line DSLR being available next year? The reason why I ask is because I am close to spending $4,000 on the new 5K iMac if a new camera won't be available until 2016. However, if we are talking early to mid 2015, then I might hold off on a new computer so I can get the camera instead.

7D MkII vs 1D MkIV "real-world"

There was a premature, fairly information-thin thread on this subject recently, http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=23071.0 but now that the 7D MkII has actually been in the hands of working photographers for some weeks now, I'd be very interested to hear real world viewpoints from 1D MkIV shooters who now also have worked with a 7d MkII.

My very high mileage MkIV has over 500,000 actuations now, and replacement time can't be too far away. Another lightly used MkIV isn't out of the question! But a gripped 7D MkII could be viable.

I like having one good quality crop body along with the FF bodies. The MkIV has functioned superbly in that role. The 7D MkII will clearly do some things better, notably AF and particularly low-light AF. I frequently work in the 1600-3200 iso range, but rarely above 6400 iso.

Canon 7D mk ii or Canon 5D mk iii which is better all around camera?

Hi All,

Perhaps this has been asked before, if so please point me in the right direction. I looked and did not find the comparison that fit my needs.

Which do you think is a better all around camera? 7D mark III or 5D mark III

I know this answer varies on situation, so here is what I am working with.

  • Can only get one
  • Price is not a major factor (since they are getting closer in price)
  • Camera will be used to create basic videos for the web Think quality business video and youtube product reviews
  • I am a Web Designer / Developer 1st / Photographer 2nd. Occasionally I take photos for clients, if it is real high end stuff they hire a professional photographer
  • Family Camera. (Two kids 3 & 6 who play soccer, basketball, dance, go fun places, etc...)
  • Maybe set up some simple video stuff with kids
  • I am a former college newspaper photographer who enjoys carrying a camera and taking all kinds of shots.

I currently have a 60D with a few lenses including 70-200 f/2.8L IS version 2

Now that the 5d3 prices are dropping I was thinking of getting a 5d3 (I have always wanted one), as I researched it looks like the 7D2 might be a better fit.

To me it looks like if I go with the 7D2, I will be giving up a full frame and better low light images (not to say that the 7d2 has poor low light functionality)

Full frame might not be a big factor other than just bragging rights.

Which do you think will be a better fit?
Any reason to go with the 5D3 over the 7D2 for my situation?

Thanks in Advance! -- Steven
