Pulling the trigger on a 6D

Hey guys I just sold my 5D MkII as I thought it's time to get in with modern society and get a camera from this era. I hear good things about the 6D. Does anyone want to share their thoughts? Was it as glorious as you imagined or do you wish you had coughed up for a MkIII instead? I'm pretty sure the 6D would be more than enough camera for me until 2020 but still nice to consider other options!

I guess I'm just looking for some encouragement to buy the 6D. Any negatives I should be aware of? Other than losing a megapixel and 1/8000s? (Neither of which I care about). I've played around with the six a few times at a camera store and I think I can get used to the directional pad thingy instead of the joystick. Mostly use centre AF point anyway. I think the MKIII AF would be wasted on me. (I think the 7D AF was wasted on me too! :P)

I have to admit the Sony a7r does look a bit tempting when you have a vacancy in your DSLR kit. ;)

Nah, let's not go there.

Any thoughts before I pull the trigger?? Or forever hold your peace?

(Note - I shoot a variety of stuff, most of it doesn't move).

EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS Replacement Coming in November [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that demo versions of the upcoming replacement for the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS have hit select photographers hands for field use.</p>
<p>The new design resembles the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS with a thin focus ring at the base, and a wider zoom ring near the front element. The aperture range for the lens will remain at f/4.5-5.6. Another mentioned feature is in the lens hood for the lens. It sounds like there will be a retractable opening near where a filter would be, so you could turn your circular polarize easily if you needed to.</p>
<p>As with anything regarding this oft rumoured lens, we take things with a grain of salt. That being said, things are lining up with a lot of consistent information.</p>
<p><em>Hoping to hear more soon.</em></p>

Dustin Abbott reviews the Rokinon 12mm f/2 NCS for Mirrorless

Hello everyone,

My newest review, the Rokinon 12mm f/2 NCS for Mirrorless systems, has just gone live. I would be delighted for you to help me get the news out. I liked this little wide angle option so much that I added it to my own kit. I tested it on an EOS M body, but my observations cover the other mirrorless systems that this lens is available for.

The written review is here: http://bit.ly/1uEJNwl
The video review is here: http://bit.ly/1otFd7L

Both have a lot of sample images and real world observations. The written review also has linkage a gallery with a lot of images, including some full size samples for download. Take a look!

Lens Image Gallery: http://dustinabbott.net/2014/10/rokinon-12mm-f2-ncs-lens-gallery/

My Conclusion: In summation, this lens is (at least to me) one of the most exciting options available in the EF-M mount. It is a lens well situated for producing some “WOW” pictures from this compact system (along with the other camera systems that it is produced for). It has a very nice build quality, well-functioning manual controls, and has exceptional image quality even wide open. It’s a great focal length, has great color rendition, and is a lot of fun to use. It’s greatest challenge is that Canon makes a great compact wide angle zoom that has AF, IS, and costs no more. But it’s greatest asset is a fully usable f/2 aperture that is 2+ stops faster than the Canon zoom. That made the difference for me; I added this lens to my own kit at the end of the review period. It really boils down to your own personal priorities. The good news: I don’t think you can really make a bad choice here. Just be prepared to do your own focusing if you choose the Rokinon.

why there are no new L primes

Hi
i'm considering to buy some new fast prime lenses for my 5D III

However Canon has left behind their L primes update, since there is no new 35L 50L 85L 135L replacements, and the 24L II isn't quite the sharpest lens wide open.

It seems Canon drop the weight on 24-70 2.8 II and 70-200 2.8 IS II where these two are far the best zoom lenses i've ever used. I trust them completely at 2.8 and i get nailed focus pictures without selling me, where as a professional that means everything.

However the need for faster glass is imminent

These sigmas ART 35 and 50 seems promising.
After testing the 35A the only thing that stops me is the focus accuracy. (actually it was good in this 35A but i had bad experiences with sigma before)

However Sigma glass is perfect. no CA (damn these EF 50 1.4 and EF 85 1.8 are killing me) , sharp wide open, what else to ask for?

I haven't tested the 50A yet but i know it will be top notch like the 35A i've tested

Meanwhile after seeing this

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=403&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=1&LensComp=941&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

I was wondering why should somebody buy the 50L today.
Not a wise choice in terms of quality and price.

Anyway, is there any word out about new L primes?
maybe next year? or should i move along buying the 35A and 50A since the current 35L and 50L is out of the question since they are quite expensive and old.

ST-E3 and Canon A-1

I am just about to buy what seems to be a good copy (buying it from a person who bought it new) of the Canon A-1. This because I would like to explore film.

I have a question: Is it possible for me to run the st-e3 with it (given the cameras limitation of 1/60 sync speed) and my 600s? I will buy it regardless, but I wonder if I can use my existing gear, or if I would have to buy a dedicated flash for it..

Thanks in advance,

Gerhard

Which white lenses are weather sealed?

Hi,

I have read a plenty of reviews and discussions about various Canon white lenses and I feel more and more confused. Some say that all white lenses are sealed and others tell just the opposite.
I know that the 70-200 L IS II is sealed and 300 f/4L should not be.

I've read topics where one 300 f/4 user complains about mold inside the barrel...

I am considering the 300mm f/4L and 400mm f/5.6L for my next buy but I want to be sure I can use them in difficult weather situations like light rain or dust.

Can anyone share his/her experience about this subject?

Thanks.

4K Products Coming From Canon [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told to expect “a bunch” of 4K products from Canon, starting in early 2015. There will be products in the EOS line, Cinema EOS line and possibly the VIXIA line.</p>
<p>Both the EOS C300 and EOS C500 will see updates in 2015, with the EOS C300 replacement gaining at least 4K. We have no idea if Canon will follow ARRI into 6K territory or not, but judging by Canon’s strategy thus far, I don’t see that happening. Though a good source keeps telling us Canon has its sight set on being the “A camera”, and that there could be a different form factor Cinema EOS product shown at NAB.</p>
<p>As for 4K DSLR’s, we weren’t told which camera(s) would get the capability. I asked if the 7D Mark II could possibly get 4K via firmware, to which there was no clear answer.</p>

Bird Photos and Others

This link has a few of my bird photos : http://newbabycamera.weebly.com

My wife and I recently found out that we are going to have a baby. This will be our first child and we are both very excited and are looking forward towards this experience. We want to document our child’s early years through pictures and video for when they are grown up. I am trying to save up for a new Canon camera that can help me both take pictures and videos. Unfortunately the camera that we want is not cheap so I created this website to share some of the pictures that I have taken. If you like any of these pictures and would like to contribute to the new baby camera fund we will appreciate that very much. These are not professional pictures. These are just few pictures that I have taken on vacation. Thank you very much for your support – Excited Father! Here is the link to the website: http://newbabycamera.weebly.com

Canon 5Diii viewfinder info missing

Hi Everyone

I have just got my camera back from the repair shop and all settings have been returned to factory default.

I now cannot get any information to come up in the viewfinder (shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation level etc). The only thing that I can see is the selected focus point. Hopefully I am being stupid and I need to change a setting on the camera somewhere?! It's just that I have never come across this before.

Going on holiday in a few hours and worried that I might have a bigger issue than I think…….

Thanks so much for any replies.

ISO 160 vs. 100

I think it was in the Jeff Cable review (reviews are pouring out now) of the 7DII where he made claims that ISO 160 on Canon cameras are better than ISO 100. I find this strange. Guided by earlier discussions on this forum I was led to believe that ISO 100 is the lowest (most clean) natural setting for Canon cameras, and shooting at the optional ISO 50 would clipping the highlights and affect the DR.

However, I am a simple guy, and if I am told by credible sources that 160 is the magic number for shots where you want a maximum clean image (where conditions allow you), that is then what I will shoot at :)

Any thoughts/insights?

clown* photographer

Hello fellow peoples,
I was at Melbourne Airport a few weeks ago photographing commercial aircraft coming in to land with a strong northerly wind. When I saw this clown* with his ipad trying to photograph a 777 coming in too land at 150kts, his ipad had no chance but he was convinced of getting a good shot! I said hello, we chatted a bit and I then suggested that a proper camera would do a better job!! He then started talking about photography and how he used to own a studio and do weddings and stuff, but all you need nowadays is a iPhone/ipad, his words this guy had no idea! I strutted back to my car and opened my boot/trunk and pulled out my 1d4 with 70-200IIL(hood attached) strolled back and started shooting at 10fps and showed him what this beast can do!!!!! all he said was nice camera, he stayed for one more landing got in his car and drove off, I haven't seen him again> true story :o... I think Neuro had a similar experience ;)

Why canon do not have a 500mm f/5.6 in their product portfolio?

Hi,

Canon's f/4 familly is really wide: 70-200mm, 300mm, 400mm, 500mm, 600mm
The f/2.8 is not to bad: 70-200mm, 300mm, 400mm.
Stopping at 400mm f/2.8 makes sense : price and weight are not really interesting anymore for longer focal.
But the f/5.6 is not well represented: 400mm then 800mm. There is a lack in 500mm and 600mm

Why do Canon not have 500mm f/5.6 nor 600mm f/5.6?

Any ideas?
Who would be interested in such a lens?

new 70d, wrong manual, no plastic wrap

Hello guys,

I just received my long awaited 70d. Two "details" tho:
1. they sent me a 4 language pack of manuals: Polish, Czech, Hungarian and Slovak (I live in France). No need to say I do not speak any of those. No French nor English :'(
2. there was no plastic wrap around the canon box... but the product seems new.

regarding the lack of plastic wrap, is this common with canon products? watching unboxing videos on youtube seems to confirm that.

what about the manual? I know i can just download a PDF but for the price I paid, I think I deserve the printed version. Besides the small form factor of the printed manual makes it handy to carry around in the camera bag...

are these mix-ups frequent with canon, or did I just got a returned camera sold as new?
any chance that canon can send me a printed manual?
any similar experiences highly appreciated! thanks!

Night Sky

Hi, I have done a bit of research on taking night sky pictures. I want to take some shots of the Milky Way near a couple of landmarks in New Hampshire. Being a bit of a novice here, I have read a few blogs where people are saying Canon lenses don't cut it because of bad coma. Is that accurate? and recommendations as an example for a Rokinon 24 over the 24L that canon makes.

I only have 3 lenses at the moment with my 5d3. I've got a 24-105L, 100macroL and the 70-300L.

My results with the 24-105L weren't impressive. I'm going to try the macro lens this weekend if I get a clear night, with the assumption that being a prime its light gathering will be significantly better? but I'm not adverse to picking up the Rokinon 24 if it is actually good for this type of shot. The problem is I understand it can be soft, and I'm not sure what use I would have for it besides night shots, where the 24L I could see myself using more.

Thanks,
Jeff

7D Mk II Availability Question

Hello, I have yet to pre-order the 7D Mk II, but plan on doing it very soon. Amazon and B&H say that availability begins on October 30th. I am shooting a football game on Saturday, November 1st. If I got 1-day shipping, do you think it would be unreasonable to expect to receive a copy in time?

For example, if I pre-order an iPhone and it is coming out on a Friday, Apple ships it early so it arrives on Friday, as opposed to shipping it on that Friday. I am not sure if Canon follows this practice.

Is there anyway I can get a 7D Mk II Body in time to shoot the football game?
