Maybe some don't, but I think many of us love the feel and process of using a film SLR. Rotating through the shutter speeds. Deciding to set and burn 160 ASA film at 100 for slight overexposure when shooting portraits. Being able to see all your camera's settings without having to look at an LCD. Nikon tried to appeal to this sentiment with their Df, but fell short and ended up with a messy hybrid. Fuji seems to be doing it right, and I've been eye-balling the X-T1, if only based on aesthetics. I want Canon to put out something similar. I'd love to see an AE-1 styled digital body with at least the specs below:

  • Full Frame (6d sensor maybe?)
  • Shutter Speed Dial
  • ISO Dial
  • Exposure Comp Dial
  • LP-E6 battery, if possible
  • PC Sync port
  • No pop-up flash
  • Replaceable focus screens

Who else is interested in this sort of Camera?

Is G17 still coming?

It seems to me the G17 was rumored to be announced this past spring. Nothing at Photokina this month. Does this mean no G17? Is the GX7 a good alternative to the G16/17? I have a S90 but I find the controls a bit small for my sausage fingers - in particular the wheel on the back. I was thinking of getting a bit larger enthusiast camera like the G16. I was hoping the G17 would go back to the articulating screen and for a couple of other changes. No I wonder if the G17 is coming out at all. Does anyone know how the controls on the GX7 feel for a person with large hands/fingers.

Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.

Favourites of Photokina: Peak Design

<p><strong>UPDATE 09.18.2014

</strong>After yesterdays post about my admiration for the the products from Peak Design. We were inundated with links and articles that originated from Reddit about the Slide camera strap and Clutch hand strap failing when in use. I purchased both products from their booth at Photokina on Monday and I decided to go back today to ask Peak Design directly what the issues are and how confident should be in the products.<strong>

</strong></p>
<p>I spoke directly with the founder of Peak Design, Peter Dering. I requested a demonstration of what had been failing on the products and asked what Peak Design was doing about the issues. I also wanted to know if what I purchased at Photokina was affected by the issues, to which I was glad to hear they aren’t.</p>
<p>Peter explained that the issue arose because of quality control issues from the manufacturing side of things. A small percentage of springs that hold the anchor links in place were not built to the specifications Peak Design wanted. Peter did say that their manufacturing partner has been very responsive to the issues and they are working diligently at improving QC immediately on the spring mechanism.</p>
<p>I asked if the poster from Reddit that had his equipment damaged was going to be taken care of, and I was told they would be.</p>
<p>You can view Peak Design’s acknowledgement of the product on their <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/peak-design/slide-and-clutch-versatile-camera-sling-and-hand-s/posts" target="_blank">Kickstarter page for the Clutch and Slide</a>. There should be a video posted there shortly showing the issue and how to see if your Slide or Clutch is affected by the issue. Anything sold and shipped at Photokina and in the future is completely free of the spring issue.</p>
<p>Peak Design is giving 10% off to any order of $19.95 or more to Canon Rumors readers. I am making no money on this and after the explanation and demonstration from Peter, I have complete confidence in the product.</p>

<p><strong>Original Post</strong>

I’ll post a few of these over the next couple of days as I find vendors of products I actually love and use. First up is Peak Design, who manufactures some of the most useful and well design camera strap on the market. Their designs are simplistic and usable, I have found other manufacturers tend to make something as simple as a camera strap, extremely complex to use.</p>
<p>I first heard of Peak Design about a month ago when I was looking for a long, comfortable, quick release camera strap for my Sony A7S. I’m a tall person and I like the camera to hang down just below my waste level to the side. It became apparent that people were really in love with the <a href="https://peakdesign.com/store/leash" target="_blank">Peak Design Leash</a>. I ordered it and it turned out to be the perfect camera strap for the application I was looking for. The Leash is probably best on cameras like the 60D and smaller. I wouldn’t use this type of strap with the EOS-1D X or a battery gripped metal DSLR. It’s probably too thin of a strap to be comfortable. They have a solution for those cameras though…</p>
<p>While I was at the Peak Design booth, I was given a demo of their new <a href="https://peakdesign.com/store/slide" target="_blank">Peak Design Slide</a> camera strap for larger DSLRs. It’s a very thin, yet well padded strap. It’s best feature is a very nifty quick adjust handle on the strap to quickly shorten and lengthen the strap as needed. I ended up buying one.</p>
<p>The second product I bought yesterday was the <a href="https://peakdesign.com/store/clutch" target="_blank">Peak Design Clutch</a> hand strap. This is another quick release and quick adjust product. For anyone that has used the Canon hand strap, you know that is anything but quick and easy to use. The one caveat for this product is the need of a camera plate in the tripod hole. <a href="https://peakdesign.com/store/standard-plate" target="_blank">Peak design does sell an Arca compatible universal plate</a>, but they do not sell L brackets. There are probably L brackets out there that the strap could mount to, but you’ll have to find a bracket with a hole that you can feed the mounting hardware to. It might be worth it to the various bracket makers out there to be “Peak Compatible”.</p>
<p>All-in-all, their products are wonderfully designed and executed and I highly recommend their straps.</p>

7D Mark II - Timing and when to buy

I WANT to buy a 7D2 but there's nothing on it I NEED right now, so I'm a little flexible with the timing. I expect this to be my only camera purchase for at least five years, but I have some questions to help me decide the timing.

1. What's the rough pattern for price drops on launches like this? For example would some retailers offer it at $1700 or $1600 in January? Did the original 7D stay close to MSRP for a long time?

2. Do DLSR's have revisions and bug fixes in later batches of the same model? For example if you buy a computer monitor at launch it will often have subtle issues that get silently corrected or improved in later revisions. Are DSLRs the kind of product that get more reliable later in the manufacturing cycle?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hands-on With the Canon EF 400 f/4 DO IS II

HTML:
<p>Matt Granger has posted a short hands-on video and samples gallery for the new Canon EF 400 f/4 DO IS II. Keep in mind the lighting conditions around the Canon booth are less than stellar and all the sample images were shot at high ISO.</p>
<p>I had a chance to hold the lens and it feels exactly like the previous version, solid, light and well balanced. I am looking forward to shooting with the new 400 DO, as the first version is one of my favourite Canon lenses.</p>

Canon Confirms Replacement of 100-400 Coming, More DO & EF-M Lenses

HTML:
<p>Canon’s Chuck Westfall has confirmed to CNET that Canon is indeed working on a replacement to the long-in-the-tooth EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L, though no timeline was given as to when we would see it.</p>
<p>Canon also plans to introduce more DO (diffractive optics lenses), though manufacturing costs have to come down before we see more “popular” type lenses. It’s interesting to note that Canon has <a href="http://www.cnet.com/news/canon-reveals-details-for-future-telephoto-lens-line/" target="_blank">patented an EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 DO IS</a> lens formula in the past.</p>
<p>EF-M isn’t dead yet according to Canon, as they promise to introduce more lenses for the system in the coming months and years.</p>

Some thoughts on the 7D2...

I wonder if:

...the dual sensor technology does not limit Canon on the pixel density of their sensor developement, and that's why we 'only' got a 20mp sensor in the 7d2? We are in theory looking at a 40mp sensor here aren't we?

...this camera is not aimed at 'budget' sport shooters who cant afford the FF 1Dx? The 1Dx guys are not complaining about 'only' having 18mp's. So the prosumer gets a crop sensor 10frames per second 20mp camera for quarter of the price? Seems like a fair trade off to me...Canon seems to have this 'two camera' with same images quality but different hardware strategy, 5d3 vs 6D, 70d vs 7d2, and now also 1dx vs 7D2??

In my neck of the woods, South Africa, most keen photographers do wildlife, and I see many Eos apsc bodies in the Kruger National Park, mostly with long Sigma zoom lenses attached. I think they would just love a camera like this...something to aspire to even though the price here is just south of the 6D. Having the 7D2 will label you as a serious amateur with a bit more money than most :) ( after all a cameras is just 'male jewelery' for a lot of guys, isnt it ? ;D )

...how good the high iso noise is? I suppose that is the one question we would all like to know....But if it is substantially better than the old 7D then I suppose we could look forward to this technology trickling up to the FF models....lets hope so at least.

...how good this Samsung will turn out to be? And how it will compare to the 7D2?

BTW I had a look at a D800 and the Nikon 24TS yesterday and took some Raw images which I then processed at home and compared to my 6D files. Not the same image but I have shot enough 6D 24mm shift images to be able to do some sort of a comparison. I was mightily disappointed in the images from the D800...dont know it it was the lens or maybe photographers ignorance, Nikon is just so different from Canon, but they just weren't crisp and punchy like the ones from my 6D.... whereas I looked at some Sigma quattro images, jpegs from the web at Imaging resource, and they did impress me, far greater resolution than what I can get from my 6D, rather depressing actually to think how much more resolution one can squeeze out of an aps-c sensor...

Street Candids - Bangla Youth

A regular event.......I am spotted sporting a camera. "Take our picture". You will regret it I say, once I start I don't stop. Eventually, they beg to be allowed to go home....and I have what I want. There was a bottle of cheap brandy feeding their bravado, and they spoke in that peculiar Bangla-Gangsta accent with all the hand jive moves. All in all, they were a reasonable bunch and respectful of my vast seniority over their precocious youth

The Sigma 35mm Art is Toasting Canon's?

The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM 'A' is really toasting the Canon 35mm f/1.4L in IQ, Vignetting, and PRICE! ATM it sounds like a huge bargain. I am still hesitant because of the Rumors and Patients regarding the MKII 35mm L.

Do you guys think or have any secret info regarding the new 35mm and if canon is speeding up their process to release, since everybody is leaning towards sigma since the new 35 and 50mms A by Sigma?

how to get 300 2.8

I have long coveted 300 2.8. I have used 100-400 but heavy overcast, night games and sidelines with lots of clutter have stymied my photography. It is possible that I have made this complaint on more than occasion and my ruthless annoying complaining has finally worn the boss (my wife) down and I have been given permission to seek the 300 2.8. But how to obtain such nirvana.

1)300 2.8 L IS II…just kidding you didn't really think I could do that did you?
2)300 2.8 L IS I…seems like it can be purchased for around 3500 depending upon from where/condition etc
3)Sigma 120-300 sport (around 3500 again)

So 300 L IS I or sigma 120-300…

Primary purpose is for taking pictures of kids playing soccer. I use a 6D (though might someday buy a used 7DI as a second body). I shoot with a monopod when renting a 300 I which I have enjoyed. I have not ever used the 120-300. I would like to try some birding. I live near a lot of good birding locations. I would probably buy a 2xTC for that.

Any thoughts?

How much does this cost?

Hi guys,

I am just curious how much does my camera cost?
5D3
95+% cosmetic
shutter counts 4720
and a
Canon 24-105 f4

They all brought together in July 2012.
The serial number is not having light leak issue.

I am just curious because I want to get the Nikon D810.
I am really sorry if this is spamming or violate of the rule somewhere that I am not aware of.

5diii to 7dii?

Hello everyone,

I currently using a 5diii with 24-70ii, 70-200ii, 100L, and mp-e 65.

There are times, I believe the 5diii may be an overkill for my needs. I current shoot landscapes with a gigapan and usually my 2 kids playing in the park or taking portraits in a home studio.

I also do not use the 5diii as much as I did when I first bought it. I'm thinking I can sell it for a 7dii and use the rest to invest in a prime lens which I'm missing in my collection.

5diii to 7dii?

Thank you in advance.

Lenses that you want Canon to release next

Well Photokina has provided us with two non-L lenses and a DO telephoto. None of these lenses has me excited. If I had my way, Canon would release the following lenses within a year:

1. 50L II - I'd like it to focus quickly, render beautiful bokeh and be tack sharp 99% of the time
2. 35L II - see notes from above.

It possible, I'd love for Canon to keep the weight down on the lenses as much as possible. Carrying a full frame body is heavy enough as it is.

What would you like to see Canon release next?

7D MK2 pics look like any other Rebel pics since the 550D

I only came here to ask about the G7X but then i was carried away in the 7D threads.

With all due respect for Canon and no intend of trolling i have to say the images i have seen look just like any other image from a Canon Rebel.

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/canon-7d-mark-ii/canon-7d-mark-iiGALLERY.HTM

I don´t know about ISO 12800 and above and im not interested in such HIGH ISO shoots but THIS looks just like images from my 550D.

photokina first day - report

Hi,
for whom it may be interesting, I just came from photokina. I was especially interested and checked out: 7DII, 400 DO II, Sigma 150-600 Sports.

7DII:
Autofocus seems reeeally cool. I have been using FF bodies exclusively so far but might consider buying a 7DII now. (1Dx is too heavy and expensive for my type of photography). Of course I couldn't check out the image quality. They said it is the same sensor as in the 70d, but a different read-out method and therefore it is faster AND BETTER (that's at least what they said). Autofocus points are all crosstype, but EV-3 is only the center point (like in the 6D). You can pick any of the focus point as a point to lock the focus on and from there the camera uses all other points to track the subject that was unter that point when the autofocus was engaged. I had the camera in my hand with a 2.8 100 Macro and the autofocus was amazing, but then I have to say that I work with 1DsIII, 5DII and 6D so for. Can't say if the autofocus is better than with the 1Dx.

400 DO II:
Looks real tiny and feels very lightweight. But maybe that's because I am used to using a 600 L II. I am considering the lens for excursions where I cannot or don't want to take the 600 L. But then the IQ with the 2xIII has to be as good as that of the 2.8 300 II with 2xIII. We will see. Not sure if this lens will be a huge success. Price is still quite high (€ 6,500 in Germany) and the 2.8 300 II might be considered more versatile by most photographers - except for those who really need the bit more reach. Pricewise they are almost the same.
At the Canon booth I asked for a 100-400 II and the guy said that he thinks there will be a new one some time, but he has NO information on any development, so for now, there really is none ...

Sigma 150-600 L Sports:
Now this lens feels really heavy. Solid, but heavy. It felt like twice as heavy as the 400 DO II (I just looked it up, its weight is 2850 g vs 2100 g for the 400 DO, but somehow it feels heavier). The zoom ring was very tight, too tight for my taste. When I mentioned that to the presenter he pointed out that the focus change could also be achieved by pushing and pulling, so this lens is half zoom ring, half zoom push-pull. In this case I liked the push-pull more, but I would have hoped they had made the zooming via the ring smoother. But I find the lens interesting. I asked if the quality of the lens will decrease to the extremes of the zoom range and he said that the contrary would be that case, but not sure how trustworthy that statement was. And they will present extenders that are tailored to this zoom, so I am curious if the 210 - 840 that results with a 1.4x extender will be usable (in good light). The IS (OS in their lingo) didn't work on the first model they gave me and on the second it worked but not as good as on the Canon's, at least that's what I experienced when looking through the viewfinder.

I also looked at the Sigma 1.4 50 and will probably buy it. I also had the OTUS in my hands and found it was quite easy to focus manually, but still not as easy as a spot-on autofocus on the Sigma. Of course I couldn't "see" any differences in image quality through the viewfinder, but testing the Sigma really made me want one.

Then I had a look at the Samsung 2.8 300 too. It is not so massive as it was described in another thread. I couldn't gauge its weight, since it was fixed on a gimbal. If I remember correctly there were 4 of them, so I don't think the one that was shown in the other thread was a prototype. Rather preproduction models.

Last thing to I found noteworthy is that Leica had an enormously big booth, almost as big as Canon's and Nikon's, even bigger if you add the image galleries that were incorporated in that booth. They basically had the complete Hall 1 (but hosted Arri and Sinar on their booth as well).

LP-E6N in 5DMK III

Haven't seen this discussed yet, but wondering if the 5D MK III will be able to take the LP-E6N. Seems the only difference is the LP-E6N has 200mA more juice, and I am suspecting Canon looks at the battery in firmware, but wondering if in the future with a firmware upgrade, the 5DMK III will be able to take advantage of stronger and likely longer lasting batteries from the 7D MK II

Show your pre-orders for 7DMK2!

Enough blah-blahing about whether or not 7DMK2 lives up to expectations or if Sony, Nikon and Samsung are better cameras - let's put our money where are mouths are! Not really sure why that term makes sense as the money will eventually go to Adorama and it's not very sanitary to have money in our mouths but here is my preorder.

Of course, please don't post private information such as real name, address, credit card and order numbers...
