Macro Photography - APS-C Vs Full Frame

Hey everybody :)

So for the past 6 months, I've been diligently saving towards the 6D, as I want to step into the world of full frame. I'm really excited about the better noise handling, the better IQ and all the goodness that comes with a full frame upgrade.

However. I'm now caught up in the frenzy surrounding the 7Dii. The AF system and the vast improvement it will offer over my 500D is massively appealing to me. My bird photography has progressed from bird-on-a-stick to larger, slower birds in flight. Anything smaller than a gull however and I can in 98% of cases, kiss a sharp image goodbye.

I will eventually own both cameras but cannot afford both at once.

If I go full frame now, it means stalling on incrementally improving my bird-in-flight shots.

If I go APS-C, it means not being able to take low light shots and negating much of the noise issues my 500D gives.

So macro is my deciding factor. What would be considered a better tool for macro, a 6D or a 7Dii?

Thanks guys, looking forward to some answers.

Upgrade Path Dilemma

Hi everyone. I have been following canon rumors for a while and this is my first post. Understand that there are already lots of "Upgrade path" threads but I just can't find an answer to my own situation. Therefore, I will like to ask for advice from everyone here.

I current owned the following:
Canon 60D body
Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS
Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM (Non-Art)
Sigma 70-200 f2.8 OS
EX430 II

I have been shooting for more than a year now. I am a hobbyist, not a pro. Therefore, my lenses are usually sigma because they are "Best value for money". I usually shoot outdoor portraits (Loved my 50mm for this), landscapes (17mm at widest), some mini events (17-50 with EX430 will rock this section), and tried a bit of wildlife (using 70-200 and crop a lot). Although I will prefer more of landscape to wildlife, I do enjoy both types of photography. I don't shoot Studio and Macro. Currently, I do have some cash available to me right now (Maximum of buying only a 6D body). I am considering the following:

1) Buy a 6D body to use with my 50 and 70-200, keep my 60D and 17-50. This will allow me to shoot events properly with 2 bodies. (I'm doing it for free but my friends do pay me a little tips to cover for the expenses.)
Pros: Good for events and portraits (BOKEH!)
Cons: No UWA for landscape

2) Buy a 6D Kit, Sell my 60D and 17-50. (Which is more or less like what I am having now but has better IQ, this is the debate of whether to upgrade to full-frame, for the low-light performance and BOKEH!!! But I do love my 60D+17-50 combi too (Great travel combo))
Pros: Good for Portraits (BOKEH!), Slightly good for landscape (24mm from kit lens)
Con: Not so good for events (1 Body only)

3) Buy a Canon 10-18mm or 10-22mm EFS and stick with APSC sensors. (3.1 - Save the rest of the money. 3.2 -Buy a 100D as second body, 3.3 - Buy a Tamron or Sigma 150-600mm for wildlife)
Pros: 16mm landscape!!! Nothing else = Save more money, 2 bodies = Good for events, 150-600mm = Shoot wildlife.
Cons: Sticking with APSC for a long time, Will never enjoy the BOKEH-ness of full frame for portraits.

4) Don't buy anything at all. Shoot more till I decided on which photography I like best. Then decide.

5) Any other opinions.

Thanks very much in advance for your advice!

Micro 4/3 lenses on Canon DSLR - Normal Lens Options

I find myself a little disappointed with the 'normal lens' selection on offer from Canon for full frame.

50mm 1.8 - flimsy, decent IQ but hit and miss on focus (back/front)
50mm 1.4 - soft wide open, widely reported reliability issues
50mm 1.2 - too damn expensive for a non full time photographer
40mm 2.8 - very good IQ but misses out on the bokeh & low light ability

Has anyone tried using the Olympus 25mm 1.8 (Micro Four Thirds) with an adaptor on a full frame - how did you find it. Other reports on using different MFT lenses would also be of interest.

The Sigma 1.4 art seems too big and heavy (pushing up into the higher price range) but obviously the better option.

My main consideration at the moment is the Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG HSM if anyone has anything to add on that. I know it's a bit of weight but seems to be most consistent for the price.

Question for Owners of early run Tamron 150-600 lens

I read posts on various sites about Tamron 'fixing' autofocus problems by replacing a chip and firmware. Is this true or not? Has anyone here sent back their lens for this?

I got my lens with the first shipment in January. Generally it focuses fine on my 70D. Have had some problems acquiring BIFs in low contrast settings but a)am not an experienced BIF photographer, still have only done this occasionally b)not sure if this is 'normal' doesnt seem much different than the 100-400's I used to rent

Any feedback would be appreciated. I don't want to send the lens back for no reason.

Amazon Co-Mingling of Stock Caught Me!

I purchased a Kenko 1.4X Teleplus PRO 300 DGX from Amazon thru their Amazon Prime, and received the obsolete model. It does not work with some common professional lenses on my 5D Mark III. Newer versions that have a fix were released at least two years ago and are marked with a blue paint dot, but no model change.

Since Amazon may be co-mingling stock, there is no way for me to know for certain who actually supplied it, but I am returning it, and have reported the issue to Amazon.

Amazon has started putting stock for many items in a common bin. When a supplier slips in old or obsolete stock that has the same box and part number as in this case, customers don't know which they will get.

Counterfeit batteries and memory have already hit buyers, but I did not consider the issue before buying the Teleconverter.

At this point, I recommend Not buying Kenko TC's from Amazon, since you can't be certain as to what you will get.

Advice neede: External compact Flashgun Godox Witstro 360 or Walimex pedant?

I am looking for an light & compact flashgun, that can be used external and on the camara-shoe.
I found the Godox Witstro AS360 and the similar looking Walimex Pro Light Shooter 360.

I like the ability to use additional lightformers. And these lightformers seem to be not expensive.

Does anybody own one of these products? Which one to prefer?
Can I use them wireless too without the 200€ expensive wireless adapter?

Canon EF16-35mm F4L IS USM lens review

With a DxOMark score of 22 points the Canon EF16-35mm f4L IS USM is generally a good performer. It has good peak sharpness, particularly in the center at 16mm from f4 onwards, reasonable transmission of 4.5Tstops and low vignetting, though it’s still noticeable wide-open, particularly in the extreme corners at 16mm and more generally in the periphery at 35mm. Sharpness varies throughout the zoom range, as you might expect with a zoom but thanks to some curvature of field this lens has a rather complicated optical performance. At 28mm the lens has somewhat soft corners at full aperture, a marked increase in sharpness across the field at f5.6 and then at f8 a return to the lower edge performance seen at f4. Geometry is good though (particularly at 20mm); there’s no difficult to correct moustache type distortion, only some barrel distortion at 16mm and slight pincushion from 24mm.
.....
Adding stabilization in a lens like this is targeting videographers more than stills photographers, where the wide field of view and steadying effect can be put to good use, but it’s a welcome addition all the same. The imaging performance is good, very good in fact, but it’s not without some shortcomings, particularly at the longer end where field curvature provides some unexpected results. Once those are understood and either avoided or worked around, the lens can be a very satisfying performer and at $1,199 this new model doesn’t seem over priced.

"Loose" 70-200 f/2.8 IS ii mount fit AND lack of ability to properly test

As mentioned in a previous thread, I purchased a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II.

I originally planned to thoroughly test it using ISO 12233 charts and the like, afterall - it wasn't inexpensive.

The first issue I noticed is that compared to, say, my 24-105 lens, it attaches to the camera with virtually no resistance at all. In fact, if it wasn't for hearing and feeling the click of it being secured, I'd question if it was attached at all. Despite this, I don't feel any real play in any direction, it seems attached fairly well. I searched on this topic and found threads describing slight rotational play with the lens, but not specifically this. Considering that the rotational play threads list that as normal, is this loose feeling normal too? With my 24-105, I can feel friction as I turn the lens while mounting it. With the 70-200, I feel almost none. Verdict?

Second, the weather seal/ rubber gasket towards the mount end doesn't make contact with the camera. I don't see what purpose it serves if it doesn't. Is it supposed to?

Third, as mentioned I planned on testing the heck out of this lens using a proper ISO 12233 chart, but for a combination of reasons, it turns out that I won't have the ability/opportunity for at least a few months. What can I do instead to test that the lens is performing as it is supposed to. Keep in mind that all of my studio lights are almost 3,000 miles away so I'm somewhat limited. My original plan is fried and I only have 2 weeks to decide if I'm keeping this lens or not. What's really bugging me is that this lens is supposed to be unbelievably sharp, but I look at photos taken with my 24-105 and, at least wide open, it doesn't strike me as tremendously sharper. Perhaps I got a really good copy of the 24-105, or my expectations were too high as far as difference.

Is this lens known for there being a large number of bad copies, or a large amount of variation in quality between copies (like the 24-70 f/2.8 II)?

I love the bokeh quality though. That's undoubtedly an improvement. Thanks for any help you can give me.

The only thought I've had so far is to see if perhaps Best Buy will allow me to take a few snaps with their floor model of the lens, and then duplicating those shots with my copy. Although I have no idea if they'd allow me to do that, especially if they know I already own that model!

18-55 EF-M STM lens

I just bought this lens hoping to get somre mover versatality out of my EOS-M camera. On the scene intelligent Auto picture taking mode (which I use 99% of the time) I am noticing that the images are really soft. I saw some reviews say the same thing and this is more pronounced indoors with lower light.

Aside from applying a sharpen filter or mask - is there a setting I should use on the camera to adjust for this? Thanks - Tom

A Surprise Cinema EOS Announcement for Photokina? [CR1]

HTML:
<p>I received a vague hint that Canon could be making a surprise Cinema EOS announcement for Photokina. There was no mention of what it could be, or whether or not it was a product announcement or a development announcement.</p>
<p>I receive these sorts of “nudges” every so often and they usually end up being true, but I have zero proof that such a product is coming. The videographers may want to pay  a little attention to Photokina.</p>
<p>As always, I hope to hear some more over the weekend. This post is CR1, so please treat it as such.</p>

Patent: Dual Motor For Autofocus on STM Lenses

HTML:
<p><strong>UPDATE

</strong>This is what we’re told this patent actually is.</p>
<p><em>“This is not a focus drive patent, it’s a SPRINGLESS LEAF SHUTER mechanism. EF Leaf shutter lens that will allow a true 1/1000s are on the drawing board, they just can’t make the Cmos do a clear scan and dump faster than 1/250s no matter what they have tried , and HSS make you loose way too much power.”</em></p>
<p><strong>Original Post

</strong>A patent showing a dual motor autofocus for STM lenses has appeared. There is one motor for the STM and a secondary DCM motor. It looks like one motor assists starting the second motor for a faster and smoother operation. The patent information below is Google Translated. If anyone can clarify the patent, please do so in the forum thread associated with this post.</p>
