I'm wondering about the AF performance of this body at f/8, specifically using the Canon EF 100-400mm L IS USM + 1.4x Extender II (=140-560 f/6.3-8).

I've never used an extender with my 100-400 before, but because I'll be losing the crop factor of the 7D, I am a little concerned re the impact on AF and image quality for those times I need the extended reach.

Anybody care to comment? Cheers.

I have the Canon 6D and use the Yongnuo Flashes, the one I am having a problem with is the YN568EX. I am trying to setup the YN568EX for the SC/SN S1/S2 on the Flash by pressing the Mode Button for a while as the manual states. Nothing happens. Am I correct to understand that this operation is available for Wireless triggering system when Camera is set to Wireless Enabled? I am also having problems understanding how to setup my Yongnuo Flashes with the menu systems on Flash and on Camera too if someone could help me, I would so much appreciate it.

What's the highest iso setting that result in an actual measurable improvement for stills shooting over selecting a lower value and underexposing? I know on digic4 it's iso 3200, everything above is just pushed, but for recent models it seems to have gotten more complicated and there seems to be a difference between 5d3 and 6d sensors.

There seems to be 4 categories of ISOs (according to how they behave internally):
a) the ones that can be configured via CMOS[0] (on 5D2: 100-1600; they may be different in photo vs lv; the dual iso module uses this one as max iso)
b) the ones that use digital gain, and you can undo that gain via ML digital ISO controls (on 5D2: 6400); this is used for tricks like gradual exposure, hdr video...
c) in-between (maybe this is also hardware but it has some secondary amplifier path)
d) max ISO that can be applied via exposure override in LiveView

Dear all,
How difficult life can be. This afternoon I want to make a decision. I will visit the shop and go for the Mark5dIII.
There is a little voice in me whispering why not the 6d? Well, I think go for the 5dIII because you neer know what to shoot in the future.
I've read so much about the 70-200 2.8 (new version). Heavy, but sharp. I know this will be my longest zoom and, visiting Scotland and Shetland, in the nearby feature I will buy extenders to give it a bit more reach.
Should I buy this lens, because the lens will be fast enough with the extenders or should I pick the f.4?
Or is the lens really to heavy and will stay at home too much?

Ok, this lens is totally gimmicky and I cannot buy one, but there is something about it that just seems cool. Of course if I did get one, then I would want a brass Canon body to match it!

I expect nothing less than a whole bunch of conflicting opinions on lens selection for me, so thanks in advance... and sorry for being long winded...

Quick background:
I've owned a Sony a700 (crop) then an a850 (full frame) with a bag full of great Minolta primes and a couple zooms over the years. It all got too big and cumbersome. I switched to Pentax for a while. But I simply came to miss "that look" of my full frame images. There also isn't a local camera shop that sells either Sony or Pentax, which is a hassle.

I'm switching to Canon and currently shopping. I like what they have to offer, and my local store carries it.

I'm a serious hobbyist, shoot a bit of everything. Travel, hike, portraits, lots of landscapes and still life, macro (but it's close-ups under available light rather than ring flash illuminated fly eyeballs). I rarely use a flash. Sometimes do a paid gig as part of my graphic design work, and the odd event. We live in the Rocky Mountains.

For me, portability is important. I'm also trying to reduce redundancy in focal lengths, and therefore reduce decisions about what to take along with me.

I have a Sony RX100 for everyday, middle of the road, video, skiing, impromptu snapshots or when I just can't take an SLR. It's been great for what it is.

I'm 100% getting a 6D body. I'm the perfect candidate. I rarely use continuous AF or burst mode. Rarely any sporting events. I'm coming from Pentax, so any AF is fast. Since film days, I habitually centre-spot-focus and pan to my subject. I like the 6D's lightness and relative simplicity. It's grip alone won me over the D600. I tend to be more slow and methodical in my photography. I've tried and really like the 6D. And I've found a 430EX for cheap for the 3-5 times a year I use a flash.

So, on to the all important lenses...

I'm thinking about getting the following:

70-200 f4 IS -- it seems the best compromise of fast enough, small enough and could handle a 1.4xTC if I got the itch. I thought really hard about the 70-300L but I just think I'll pick up and take the 70-200 more often. I think I've found a great used one for $800 to check out this week. The 2.8's are out of the question simply for their size.

17-40 f4 -- I liked my Minolta 20/2.8 (FF) and my Pentax 15 (crop), but I don't hear great things about the Canon 20. Zeiss prime options are out of my budget. Portability and flexibility are priorities. I'm typically taking landscape or shots outdoors, or if indoors I have time or a tripod. Shooting at f/5.6-11 isn't a problem. The 17-40 seems to fit the bill. Like the 77mm filter. I understand there are some mixed views on the corner quality, so I will try and test a few copies.

Any objections?

With these two lenses, I feel like I'm covering a nice landscape-focussed setup, and the 70-200 could be a nice portrait lens too. And it's all fairly weather sealed for my mostly outdoor shooting.

I don't plan to get a mid-range or walk-around zoom. I had a 28-75/2.8 on my Sony and found I always preferred my fast primes. I have the RX100 for walk around, and honestly it's really good. I am happy enough in the 35-85mm range to just work with primes and move around to adjust framing if I need to.

But now I'm head scratching on which primes. I'd like one or two max. (Done with LBA, and you can hold me to it!)

Ideally, I'd like something (fairly) fast for portraits and something (fairly) macro, but I don't really need 1:1. Is there one that covers both? I am usually satisfied with f2-4 for portraits and low-light and rarely pine for f1.4-8 in any shots. That said, except for the wide angle (like 17-40) I want to be confident in the quality I get out of my lenses wide open.

Considerations...

50 f2.5 Macro -- I'm going to try one for the first time this Friday. My small town store has none. I had a Minolta 50 2.8 macro that I really enjoyed. I like to do hand-held close-ups more than ultra-close macros. The f2.5 can also double as a fairly decent portrait lens. I understand it's pretty ancient and the AF is not USM, but hey, I'm coming from Minolta and Pentax lenses all of which were screw-driven. I found the Canon 50 1.8 to be quiet in comparison.

Tamron 90 VC -- I like that it's a little shorter, smaller and lighter than the 100s/105s, and seems excellent except maybe bokeh not as dreamy as 100L. I can get one for under $600 new. 6-year warranty. Hmm.

Canon 100's -- Not sure where to go with this. The 100L seems great but it'll be well over $1000 in Canada so that breaks the bank (whereas the Tamron is cheaper here, go figure). The non-IS Canon 100 is a consideration but the Tamron seems to appeal more.

Another consideration is to get the zooms now and just wait till 2014 and whatever the new 50mm ends up being. If they came out with a 50mm USM IS f/2 with .5x macro I'd be in heaven. But that won't happen. I hear a new 85 is a possibility too.

(I'm also used to in-camera shake reduction so don't know if I'll miss having IS on a lens. Though I have pretty steady hands.)

40 STM -- This almost takes me back to Pentax. I'm going to pass though as it's redundant with the 17-40, and I'd rather have either macro (even .5) or something faster. It doesn't offer me enough. I'll just pop the RX100 in my pocket.

50 1.8 or 1.4 -- If this was my choice I think I'm happy enough to wait till 2014 and see what might be. Although for 100 bucks the 1.8 might be something to try for now. I think I feel the same about the 85/1.8 and 100/f2. When I start to talk about these ones I start looking over at the Tammy 90. I had a Minolta 100/f2 and it was simply spiffy (and no purple finger or CA to boot). But I think the benefits of the macro and VC/IS outweigh the extra stop.

There. That's it. 8000 words. I'm interested in your reflections on the matter...if you didn't hang up and leave before you got to the end. ???

For folks using the 1DX along with the "unsupported" Ec-S high precision focusing screen, what sort of exposure compensation are you having to manually apply, since it's not supported by firmware?

Previous Ec-S, Ec-N and Ec-R screens: These are previous generation screens that will fit into the EOS-1D X. They’re a bit brighter than standard screens, such as the Ec-C or Ec-D series, with no custom function to adjust metering to compensate for the added brightness (some degree of user-applied exposure compensation will be needed if they’re installed).

I just want to get an idea of how widespread 4K displays are at the moment.

Do you think 4K video formats will become more widespread with the upcoming DSLR generation of bodies or do you think manufacturers may only include it in top of the line models (EOS 1Dc) or more dedicated video cameras (e.g. EOS C~ line).

Lastly, do you think the Canon EOS C~ line will formally expand into a product like for example EOS 7Dc?

Wanted to revive a discussion on flash brackets, especially those that:

1. allow swift change (std CCW motion) from landscape mode to portrait mode. swift is important, as event work often requires one to change orientation very quickly.

2. keeps the flash centered above the lens in both orientations.

3. keeps the flash head in its original horizontal position, without a separate motion to rotate it, so that its bounce card is still in the vertical orientation (to utilize ceiling bounce)

4. mounts to an AS style L plate, i.e. does not require its own threaded mount

I'm currently using a Newton bracket which fulfills 1-3 above quite nicely. Its compact, effective, and I absolutely love using it to eliminate those horrible side shadows . The RRS B series bracket (but not their wedding bracket) appears to fulfill all of 1-4 above. are there any others? Specifically, Custom Brackets makes a compelling solution but does not meet (4) above. Wimberly provides a solution as well, but does not meet (3) above

I am planning on shooting some portraits during a gala this weekend. I recently purchased an Apollo Orb Speedlite Kit to get some decent even lightning.

I read some comments on the internet about the 580EX II eating batteries, so I bought some extra Eneloops. This time the Eneloop XX with 2550mAh.

Do I need to charge the Eneloops in my Maha C9000 or are they ready to go?
The package says preloaded. Break-in, refresh&analyse, charge, discharge or just use them straight away? I read a lot on the internet but I can't seem to find the exact answer.

Also, is a CP-E4 recommended?
How long will the Eneloops last with and without an external battery pack at full power?

Ok.. I know that there has been several threads regarding this focal length and I have also created one earlier regarding the accessories needed to support and use a lens this big but here comes another one =)

It´s hard for me to rent one and I have no friend that owns one so the only thing I can do to get an idea about using this focal length is to look at many pictures of a variety of animals and try to figure out if it´s a good thing to go for or not.

Is it a very limited use for this lens? Does objects need to be VERY far away to fill the frame in a good way?
Of course I understand that an elephant can´t be compared to a small bird in an example and that is not the flexibility I am asking for when purchasing this lens. But maybe there is someone out there who can give me their thoughts on how it is to use a 600mm?

I photograph everything. All from wild boars and deers to tiny birds. Is it too limited so any place that has not got an open area of many meters is too hard to handle? Do I need open fields or is it flexible enough in the woods? Now I am talking about the focal length and not the handling.

Do you who own this lens often feel that a 500mm would have been a better focal length and for you who own a 500mm does it feel a bit short from time to time? I know that many use their 600mm with converters so that is a proof that more reach is wanted sometimes but for avarage use and not only small birds?

On a regular day I have the chance to photograph everything from small birds to big deers, foxes and so on. I have a 70-200mm which will often follow as a backup and I think I later will go with the 300mm 2,8 as a more flexible smaller lens those days the big one will stay at home or so.

I know it´s tricky to answer but maybe you who have the lens can tell me your thoughts and how you use it. And maybe even what made you go for this instead of the 500mm.

I want a laser because I hate how inkjets are evilly engineered to not work in any function if any ink cartridge runs dry. I have have had a single color cartridge run dry, even tho I almost never print color, and then the whole device does not work. I will never use such detestable technology. MBA swine should be shot.

Hello everyone! Next week i'll finally be purchasing my first DSLR!

I understand there are other cameras out there, but it's gonna be between these two cameras, the Canon 70D or Canon 5D Mark II.

I shoot Portraits and Concerts mostly, but also do a lot of just general walk-around photography around town etc.

I've wrapped my head around the details, and I don't really care about the Wifi/Tilt Screen/Touch screen features that are always talked about on the 70D. The Dual Pixel AF is nice, but video mode on my camera is going to be used less than 30% of the time when the camera is in my hands. At the end of the day what I truly want is great image quality, and low light performance.

This is what lead me looking at Full Frame cameras. Obviously a Mk III would be awesome, but as my first DSLR? I don't think that would be the way to go, as I want to invest in some awesome glass and not blow the entire wallet on a body. I've seen refurb/used MK II's going for around the same amount as a new 70D, so that really put the conflict in my brain.

Maybe you wonderful folks could provide some input, and make this decision a little more clear cut!

Well, I'm starting to get tired of waiting for the Magic Lantern firmware to get out of alpha for my 5D3. And, with it setting (at this time) an un-resettable boot flag, that when even not running ML, it causes quite a delay from turn on or coming out of sleep, I'm gonna wait to do that.

But, I'm highly excited about trying RAW video.

The BM pocket camera, at about $1K is quite interesting, but I have NO idea about micro 4/3's lens systems...
I'm not sure what lenses to get with this camera due to its sensor size, etc.
I've heard there is an adapter out for mounting canon EF lenses to this thing, which I'd really like so as to save me buying more $$ glass.

Can someone give me some pointers, maybe a some good links to read about this or a brief description of what I'd be getting into here on this thread?

I love my 5D3, but while I wait for ML to get RAW working properly without permanent changes, I'd like to possibly play with the BM Pocket camera....so, any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

I've gotten a LOT of good help here, but the forums over at BM are pretty dead from what I've seen so far...

I am looking to sell my 7D, 17-55 IS and 10-22 since I moved to FF. I had an idea of what to ask for, but that was before all the price cuts on APS-C lenses and talks of 7DII, etc. I only sell my gear on Craigslist (not a big fan of packing and shipping), and I would like to get an estimate of how much to ask for. If you can give me some advice based on recent buying/selling experience or just general breadth of knowledge, that will be greatly appreciated.
All my gear is in perfect condition functionally and cosmetically, and AFMA-d with FoCal. The 7D is refurbished, bought 2 years ago and carries a 3-year MACK diamond warranty. The lenses were bought new, also 2 years ago, and come with Canon hoods and I have the box for the 10-22.
I have seen people selling well-worn 7Ds for $ 500 as well as some trying (unsuccessfully) to sell for $ 1100. Can you advise what would be a fair price that'll help me get these off my back quickly. Thanks!

I have been using my 6D for some while now and I start to get irritated that the camera compensates in manual mode. When I change the aperture, the shutter speed gets compensated to keep the same exposure.

Simple example;

Manual mode
Shutter: 1/160
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 1600

When I set the aperture to f/6.3 the shutter speed compensates by setting itself to 1/125.

What am I missing here?

They suggest there will be a high-end Canon APS-C DSLR but not with the '7D' in the name.

I have a 5DmkII and found Magic Lantern on the net recently.
I think it could be a nice improvement but because it's not official supported, are there known stories of camera's died due to ML?

I've read it supports Auto ETTR. It sounds great to get the best image question but are you using it?
Does it really improve the IQ?

Why should I try ML for stills in your point of view?

Have a friend who is interested in upgrading from her sony P&S for taking pic of her 3 boys...mainly family stuff but keeping cost around $700-ish. I'm a Canon loyalist and thought about recommending the Canon SL1 or maybe the T3I with kit lens and a 50mm 1.8. But there are so many other avenues to go...Samsung, Olympus, Sony, Nikon...all make decent looking mirroless and/or intro level DSLRs that look to have better specs than the intro Canon cameras. Although the size of the SL1 would/could be appealing for some one new to DSLRs. One feature that also seems appealing is built in Wifi transfer (of course Canon doesn't offer this near the price point she wants to keep at). Need advice on some good set-ups under $700. And for those of you with wifi built in, is this a must have?? Thanks
