Which body to bring

I am leaving for a trip to orlando, fl tom and love photographing disney. I went during june and with the family rwlized my af was front focusing and ruined a lot of pics. Since then it jas been fixed. Just curious if I should bring the 1dx or 5d3 for this trip it will be hot and may rain. I may only get 3-4 hrs a day to shoot. Would the 1dx be overkill? Or shoukd I bring the 5d?

How's the RX-100 Miii? Should I?

My spouse has a NEX-7 but she wanted something smaller for travel. I did not want to see her getting a P&S (because of my concerns about IQ) and she wanted a viewfinder. After looking at the G1x, some of the Fuji line, the Nikon J and the Olympus PEN, she really liked the size of the Sony RX-100iii. To my hands, it does seem small but she feels it is a good fit for her. Some nice small cameras would require an add-on viewfinder which does level the "cost playing field" a bit. Anyone have some first-hand experience with this camera that can share their thoughts? I do think I understand the limitations but it does seem to take some really nice images.

Thanks.

Silly Photokina Rumors

;D
From some of the other threads, it seems like the stress of waiting for significant announcements from our favorite (or not) camera company has made some of us a little testy. So as I public service I am starting a thread for rumors that are OBVIOUSLY AND REALLY TRULY TRUE CUZ I HEARED IT FROM A COUSIN OF MY NEIGHBORS AUNT WHOSE HAIRDRESSER MOONLIGHTS AS THE CEO OF CANON, SO THERE!!!!!

So, the first rumor is that the biggest splash at Photokina will be the surprise introduction by all the major companies of edible DSLR cameras, mainly targeted toward the survivalist community. Sony will try to one up the competition by introducing three edible versions of its Alpha series in beef jerky, chocolate and vegetarian surprise flavors. Nikon teamed up with Food Network's Alton Brown to create a three course camera, with a Caesar Salad lens, filet mignon with caper sauce flavored body and a sensor that doubles as a wafer-thin chocolate mint. Canon's entry into the Food Wars will be an exquisite blend of of kombu and katsuobushi which can be used to create an incredible dashi stock that can be used as the base for hundreds of different dishes.

So, what incredible thing do you think will be announced at Photokina?

35mm f/1.4 L to 16-35mm f/4 L

Been reading the reviews of the 16-35mm f/4 L IS and it looks like its a winner, even better than the f/2.8 USM II. I have a 35mm f/1.4 and would like to trade it to the 16-35 f/4 L IS. I would love to have a wider angle lens to add to my arsenal

Question 1: Is that a wise decision?
Question 2: Do I keep the 35mm f/1.4 L lens and get a wide prime lens like the 14mm f/2.8L or 24 f/1.4L?

Would appreciate very much your comments and opinions.

Thanks and best regards from Manila Philippines

Sigma Big Glass Impressions

First let me say that I am a lens snob, fanatic etc... I have always only purchased Canon lenses and recently mostly L series glass. My experience with "off brand" lenses has not been that stellar so I have avoided them in the past. Recently I was about to purchase a long Canon lens (the 100-400 L pumper zoom) and I noticed that my local camera store had a Sigma 150-500 used for less than half the cost of the Canon.

I was reluctant but the store manager gave me a 30 day trial period and I could return the lens no questions asked. What could I lose? I was about to head out to a trip to the Smokies to shoot wildlife so I thought I would give the new Sigma a trial run. Fully expecting the lens to be a dud and looking for reasons to return It I put it on my trusty 7D (I wanted the crop factor, making this effectively an 800mm lens with image stabilization).

The first few images were soft and unimpressive, until I put the camera on a tripod and began to adjust the micro focus, of the lens profile in the 7D. Once that was dialed in the lens performed well at 500mm with a wide open aperture. Stopped down to f10 it was very sharp, zoomed back to 300 and 400mm the results were excellent. Not quite as sharp as my 70-200 f4.0 but very good. The autofocus is a bit slow, but if you are already in the ballpark the lens can make small adjustments in focus more quickly than asking it to change focus from min focusing to infinity

Once I got it into the field and was able to evaluate the real world image making ability of this lens they were excellent, the lens is long, heavy and unwieldy, but on the crop body 7D they are very sharp with excellent color and contrast.

I fully realize that this is not a Canon L series lens, it is not weather sealed, but the build feels very solid, the controls are smooth (not quite as smooth as my 24-70 L or 70-200 L but not as raspy as my 50mm 1.4) and I am getting excellent images. I have shot with the best glass Canon offers and love it, but when I need to go long I have found this lens to be more than adequate to produce a sharp, saturated and contrasty images that makes a outstanding prints. I will post some images soon, has anyone else owned this lens and if so are you experiencing similar results?

wide angle needed

hi gyus, straight to my problem, recently I found I'm missing some nice UWA lens...

my requirements are:

  • nice build quality
  • focal length somewhere between 15 - 20mm (the wider the better)
  • AF is not necessary - but at least focus confirmation would be nice
  • sharp
  • price - the lower the better (but it doesn't mean 15mm Zeiss is not an option)
  • weigth - again the lower the better, it's intended for travel use

RPS vs Pixel King Pro

Hey all,

I recently purchased some Pixel Mago flashes and realized that they don't play well with my PW Flex/Mini system.

I tried these http://www.samys.com/p/Remote-Transmitters--Slaves/RSRT10C/Wireless-eTTL-Remote-Control-For-Canon-DSLR/142166.html and they work, but then I have to fumble through the camera menu to make adjustments to levels and such.... OR,

Do I spend, basically, double and get the Pixel King Pro triggers http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pixel-King-Pro-E-TTL-Wireless-Flash-TRIGGER-ONLY-with-LCD-Display-for-Canon-/281202092212?pt=Camera_Flash_Accessories&hash=item4178f368b4 and make the adjustments on the triggers instead?

I guess I am looking if anyone knows or has experience with the reliability of each or either. Thanks for any input you guys have!

Wasabi LP-E6 batteries and 5D3 with latest firmware...

I have read a few places that the newest firmware (that allows the 5D3 to AF at f8) is also reporting some issues with registering AM batteries.

I have also read that some AM batteries work better than others. I have used the Wasabi LP-E6 batteries and have been really happy with them on my 7D BUT has anyone used them with the new firmware on the 5D3 and found any issues? Thanks for your replies.

And what does Canon do?

https://fstoppers.com/editorial/exclusive-red-has-big-plans-be-your-still-camera-maker-34469

Imagine a still camera that can shoot 16.5 stops dynamic range at 19 megapixels. It's also modular, which means it's infinitely customizable via proprietary and third party accessories. It can also use lenses by Canon, Nikon, and an huge library of PL mount cinema lenses. In addition, it can also shoot up to 6K RAW video files at the frame rates of 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 47.96, 48, 50, and 59.94. It would also have a similar form factor and size to popular digital medium format still camera systems. Sounds amazing right? When does it come out you say? It's out NOW.

And Canon? A rather boring 7D MK2....
It will sure not the Videographer camera this site and others hyped all the years.

Anybody still holding out for a Canon 24-70 f/2.8 with IS?

I keep getting close to buying the 24-70 f/2.8, but I have to imagine an IS version will eventually come out. I love the IS on my 24-105, but I'd really like some more DOF and better bokeh as well as generally more light to play with. With the Tamron version out, there has to be pressure on both Canon and Nikon to get cracking. No?

Even on this site there have been rumors that hint that it will eventually happen, at least one suggested it was going to happen this year.

Canon Rumors (not including patent rumors, one of which was in April of this year):
http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/10/canon-ef-24-70-f2-8l-is-cr1/
http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/12/ef-24-70-f2-8l-is-exists-as-a-working-prototype-cr2/
http://www.canonrumors.com/2013/12/two-new-24-70s-coming-in-2014-cr1/

Does anybody else have hope we'll see it sooner rather than later? I keep hearing that the issue is size and weight and such. I also have read that the Tamron is large and heavy'ish. I haven't gotten the impression that put a dent in sales though.

I'd consider getting the Tamron, but I also have been reading that there have been AF and quality control issues with it.

5D mkIII vs A7s

I just got my A7s which was a hard decision after only ever shooting Canon. But the very few tests I've done are pretty amazing between the two cameras. I hope Canon makes me regret buying the A7s soon! Here are my first few tests.

85mm f/1.2 does street on a 6d.

85mm f1/2 does street on a 6d.
Not my usual combo (Ricoh gar with Zeiss 21mm biogon) but here goes

have had this cracking lens for a few months now. It spends a lot of time on my 6d full frame. Just a few of my own fave shots with this lens. The f/1.2 can be a noose around the neck.....trying to get perfection with this non IS lens and Parkinsons tremor when hand held.

Helios 44M7 58mm on Canon 5D Mark III - Does the lens hit the mirror?

Hi,

I found a nice deal from a nice chap online, who wants to sell his Helios 44M7 58mm f/2.
I've seen some interesting results of old m42 mount lenses and Canon DSLRs.
The thing is, I shoot mainly video, and some of these Helios lenses when focussed to infinity seem to
hit the mirrors of CANON FULL FRAME bodies. Most work fine with cropped sensors.

I want to know if the Helios 44M7 in particular hits the mirror of a 5D Mark III/II or no.
There's not a lot of info on the net about this lens, the 44-2 and 44-4 seem to popular.

44M7 is great no doubt, but this is an important detail for me as I do a lot of focus pulling.

Help needed!

-Ishan
