Safari 300 2.8 Mkii or 200-400 1.4x

This year in October, I will visit the first time South-Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and the Victoria Falls. We will do several safari trips during that period. I did already read a lot of gear to use for capturing wildlife. However I stay with the problem of the big white lens I want to take with me on the 1Dx. The 70-200 2.8 mkii will be placed on my 5Diii. Also the 17-40 and probably the 24 1.4ii will go along.

I own a 300 2.8 Mkii, however I see that the 200-400 1.4 is a very versatile lens. Point is of cause the 4.0 max. aperture of the 200-400 against the 2.8 of the 300. On 400mm and 600mm reach they perform almost the same (400/4.0 or 420/4.0 and 560 5.6 or 600 5.6). The extra reach for the 300mm asks for using a 1.4 or 2.0 extender, but changing that is not that quick and I don't like to change a lot because of the dust. For that reason I think about buying/renting the 200-400 1.4 for that trip. Do I need the 2.8 for capturing early or late pictures together with the 1Dx? Or would you use the 200-400 1.4 on the 1Dx for the versatility of this zoom-lens.

What would you do 300 or 200-400 1.4 ? I can't take both because of the weight limit on the airplane.

Any other thoughts or remarks for the gear for this trip are also welcome.

New Speedlite Coming? [CR2]

A brief mention that we could see a new Speedlite announced with the EOS 7D replacement in September.

I do not expect an 600EX-RT replacement, but the 430EX II could be the one to get an upgrade.

cr

What Lenses are missing from Canon's range

Whilst we all have some idea in our heads about what might get replaced next, we all have some idea of 50/85mm IS lenses, a 35mm f1.4 II L or 100-400L - but what realistically is missing from Canon's EF range at the moment ?

Here's my thoughts on omissions that could realistically be made - as to them being economic, that's a whole different story ;-)
- A fast wide, Nikon style like a 12/14-24mm f2.8
- A premium medium zoom, perhaps 20-135mm f4.0 IS to replace the 24-105L
- An affordable 500mm - f5.6 with IS for £2000 ?
- An EF pancake zoom, covering something like 20-50mm ?

Over to you... What's missing ?

Flex Lens Shade

I upgraded my polarizer and ND filters to 82mm when I purchased the 24-70 II two years ago, expecting to use them on a 24 TS-E or Zeiss 21. Now that I have the fantastic 16-35 4L IS for landscape, I'm not sure if I will ever buy either of the two lenses. 82mm filters on the 16-35 IS are great because I can stack them without having any vignetting issue even at 16mm, but I can't use the lens hood any more.

I searched on line and found this: http://www.flexlensshade.com/. I was wondering if any one has used this and what your experience is. Any other suggestions are very welcome too.

A7r Arrived - Meeting New Buddies

Finally decided to scratch the curiosity itch the other day and ordered the A7r and it arrived today along with EF adapter.

Intial impressions after their first two hours together....unimpressed.

Yes, I know it's only been two hours. I can assure you though, the introduction of the 5D3 and 6D to the family was much more joyous right from the outset.

Will stick with this thing for a couple weeks and see what happens. More to come...

If you’re like me, you have lots of Canon glass and a Sony A7 of some kind. I use the Sony A7R and the Sony A7S, both of which are great products with a few drawbacks like lens selection. I sometimes use Canon glass on the cameras, but I found the Metabones Adaptor III autofocused quite unreliably, although using it with the lens in manual focus has always worked just fine, especially for the tilt shift lenses.

Metabones has announced an updated version of the Canon to Sony smart adaptor. It is available for preorder and will begin shipping around July 17, 2014.

Features & Specifications

True electronic integration of aperture diaphragm; lets camera automatically choose aperture in Program or Shutter Priority exposure modes, or set it manually on the camera body in Aperture Priority or Manual modes. The adapter is powered by the camera body, so no external power source is required.

Two distinct operational modes are supported by the Smart Adapter IV: Green mode and Advanced mode. Green mode limits certain features and disables others in order to conserve the camera’s battery power.

Wide-Open button enables aperture to remain open for clear manual focusing.

Auto-Magnify/AF Assist enlarges the image in the viewfinder for easier manual focusing. This feature requires the AF/MF switch of the Canon EF mount lens to be set to the MF position and also requires a Canon EF mount lens that supports distance information. Auto-Magnify/AF Assist is disabled in Green mode.

High performance 32-bit processor and efficient switched-mode power supply.

Compatible with Sony E-mount full frame cameras such as the Sony A7, A7R and A7S. The Mark IV adapter supports auto “APS-C Size Capture” with EF-S lenses as well.

Supports distance and zoom display on VG and FS series camcorders and auto magnify on lenses that support distance information

Compatible with select fully manual lenses which have no electrical contacts.

Both camera-side and lens-side of the adapter are made of brass, precision-machined and plated with chromium.

Precise fit and solid connection – lens has no play, gap or wiggling when mounted on adapter and no adjustments are required to fit your lens.

Designed to reach infinity focus while maintaining the correct registration distance required to maintain optical quality of CRC lenses or lenses with floating elements.

Metabones uses matte-black treatment to keep internal reflection to a minimum in order to maintain the maximum optical quality possible with the lens.

Satin surface finish matches lens and camera mounts.

A third party zoom lens may need to be registered with the Smart Adapter first in order to detect its maximum aperture. Autofocus is disabled for most third-party lenses.

Only Canon-branded lenses introduced in or after 2006 are officially supported. Autofocus may be disabled for older Canon lenses and most third-party lenses, including most Sigma, Tamron and Tokina lenses and all Contax N lenses modified by Conurus.

The adapter’s tripod foot is detachable and compatible with Arca Swiss-style Quick-release heads.

Canon EOS 6D Digital Camera with Canon 24-105mm f/4.0L IS USM AF Lens, eBay scam

I bought a Canon EOS 6D Digital Camera with Canon 24-105mm f/4.0L IS USM AF Lens from the seller beststopdeals on eBay as a friend of mine was going from Chile to the USA from May 18th to May 27th (at 11:35PM so she would have time to received the packages before her flight), now the problem was that she had to return earlier on May 23th so she was not gonna be there when the boxes were date to arrive.
Instead the friend where she was staying received the packaged the 27th and re-shipped them without opening the boxes on June 2nd to Chile.
I received the packages on June 26th I was pretty excited so I opened them right away, I first opened the accessories the I bought from B&H (which I received without a problem) saving the camera for last, then I opened the camera package and it was full of mini iPad case empty boxes.
I was on disbelieved for an hour before I realize all this wait and all the projects that I had with my new and first Full Frame Sensor Camera fell apart.
I’m still paying for the camera and I will paying for the next 3 months as I had to get a loan to buy it.
I opened a case on eBay before the 45 days limit (I had like 9 days left) and I was so upset (and from what I researched I needed to do that right away) and also contacted the seller beststopdeals without getting a fast reply.
I lost a case in which I forgot to add information which is absolutely relevant.
Case: http://res.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ResolveCPSCase&caseId=5062170251
The seller sent a package that weights 0.1 lbs
Tracking: https://www.fedex.com/fedextrack/index.html?tracknumbers=905834515539979&locale=en_CL&cntry_code=cl_english
That weight does not match at all the product that I bought.
And actually a received a package full of empty boxes that weights 9.14 lbs
How could that be possible? It is completely wrong from what I bought.
The camera body plus the lens in the kit weights 3.16 lbs combined (Data from the seller and B&H) I supposed that is without package, that still far from the weight of the package i received and from the package that is recorded on FedEx.

I attached pictures with details and the product that I got. If there is any information that it may be relevant please let me know so I can keep updating this post.

You can find the photos on my blog: http://www.tapephoto.com/canon-eos-6d-digital-camera-canon-24-105mm-f4-0l-usm-af-lens-new-ebay-scam/

I definitely need help from anyone that be willing to do it.
I hope a solution for this, seriously.

Camera setup for dental clinic

Hello guys, I hope you all are doing great. I need a camera+macro lens+macro ring combo to photograph teeth and other stuff in the mouth in dental patients. So, I have two options and I need your help.

1. I have an old 5di which I can use in the clinic. But I need macro lens and macro flash. For a lens, I'm deciding between 100mm f2.8L and non-L. How good is the quality of the non-L lens, which is much cheaper than L one? What macro ring would you recommend besides the one Canon makes ($500)?

2. Get a crop camera, 60mm f2.8 EF-S and macro ring. How good is 60mm f2.8 lens?

I don't need top quality of the pictures, but it should be at least very good. All other people in the clinic use Nikon :o

Thanks!

Canon PowerShot SX60 HS Update [CR2]

We were told a while back by a great source that a replacement to the PowerShot SX50IS would be coming in the spring, obviously that didn’t occur. We have been told there have been some production issues with the camera and it will be announced for Photokina 2014 in September. The PowerShot lineup will probably get a separate announcement date than that of the EOS 7D replacement.

We’ve been told it will indeed have the biggest zoom range on the planet when it does surface.

More to come…

16-35 F/4L IS -- Canon registration, ACR profiles, etc.

All,

I just got the new 16-35 F/4L IS, and I had two questions:

 • When I tried to register it with Canon, there was no option for this lens (or the new EF-S 10-18 IS lens either) under UWA zooms. I checked to see if it was misfiled, but I can't find it. I'll assume Canon just hasn't updated their website yet. From past lens release experience, how long does this usually take?
 • Is there any estimate on the lead time for an ACR update with lens correction profiles included for this lens? I notice there was an update in June but this lens was not included.

Thanks!

South Monomoy Island (NWR)

Hello forum members,

I am looking to put together a day trip to South Monomy Island (part of Monomy NWR) on Cape Cod (at the lower "elbow" where the Cape turns up towards Provincetown (more about the NWR in the last paragraph and you can also google the NWR's site, too). Here is how it works: the ferry company will provide boat transportation to the island and include a naturalist to provide guidance, answer questions, and keep us clear of restricted areas. We would be dropped off on the island in the morning and picked up at the end of the day. You can bring packed food and you can "stage" backpacks or whatever gear you'd like (coats, etc.) where we are dropped. What I need is five people who want to go for a great day of photography or just nature watching. The cost is $420 for the boat ($70 per head [I'll pay full fare like the rest] plus I'd like everyone to contribute an extra $15 to tip the naturalist and the boat pilot - proportionally more for the naturalist). If you are interested, please email me at culottat at gmail dot com. I am looking to go during the week next week (week of Monday July 21st.) Weather and surf can scuttle the trip so it can't be planned too far in advance; I'd firm everything up by this week's end based upon forecasts and conferring with the boat provider.

Also, if anyone would want to split a hotel room somewhere within striking distance of the island, I'd like to know and if anyone wants to "commute" together from the Connecticut shoreline east of New Haven, I'd be open to that as well. I'm also willing to "share" my 600mm, TCs, and tripod during the day, although my photography needs will take precedence.

The island was separated from the rest of Cape Cod by a storm in 1958 and that was split into two islands by a blizzard 20 years later. That means that there are a limited number of people who visit the island since the only means to get there is boat (or swimming - not advisable in seal waters as you know what eats seals). The highlights are great birding and large numbers of harbor seals that beach themselves to soak up the sun. There are also deer and owls among other creatures plus a lighthouse.

I hope I can pull together five more people.

Thanks,
Ted Culotta

CPS Repair Warranty

Does anyone know what the warranty on repaired items from CPS is? I had an issue with my 1D Mark 4 reading cars and giving me error messages. I sent it in towards the end of last year and they said it had a bad circuit board and they replaced it. Over the last few months I'm getting the same issue. Sometimes it burns out my CF cards so they no longer work, sometimes a simple turn off/on will fix the issue temporarily and let me continue shooting.

Below is another patent for a multi-layer related sensor patent from Canon has come to light. This is the third one that has appeared in the last month or so.

This has the potential to greatly improve the colour accuracy and fidelity of such stacked sensor designs.”

7D - Weird black pictures problem

hi guys, i'm having a weird issue with my 7D.
I was covering a festival those last 3 days, and i have some really weird "black pictures" (no flash used) , almost like if i was shooting with the cap.
On 3 days and 33 gigs i only have 5 pics like this, but i never had this before.
Anyone have an idea? or already had this problem?

I uploaded the raw file here:

Flash Zoom - Difference in Stops?

Using a 600EX-RT here. Does anybody know the difference in stops at the center of the light circle created by the flash for:
1) 24mm flash zoom vs 70mm flash zoom?
2) 70mm flash zoom vs 200mm flash zoom?

I've always assumed it was just a 1 stop difference for both (1) and (2), but I can't be sure. I don't have a light meter and am wondering if anybody has done any actual tests.

Thanks!

Canon Repair on 5D3 problems

I just had my 5D3 returned from Canon Repair for correction of the light leak on long exposures and a general 18 point cleaning. My camera is acting funny. Aside from having to re-set all of my custom button settings, etc, I noticed that when in Av mode and taking a photo, if I try to rotate the Quick Control dial for some EV compensation while pressing the shutter halfway down, the shutter speed in the viewfinder changes to the letter "L" and the center mark on the exposure bar does not move. Also, I selected a 3x3 grid to show but it does not. Any ideas? I've emailed Canon and will try to call but if there are any quick fixes for this let me know. Thanks.

5D2 Won't Turn On

My 5D2 fell off a tripod onto a concrete sidewalk last week and I thought it had survived. The grip cracked and I messed up the lens, but the body seemed untouched. It wouldn't turn on at first but after taking the grip off/putting it back on it powered up and has since worked fine since.

Fast forward to today. I try to turn the camera on and nothing. With the grip, without it, with three different batteries... nothing.

I will be taking it to CPS this week, however I need to use it tomorrow and was hoping someone would know of some trick that I may try to get it to power up? I read about turning it off and on 10 times but that did not seem to work.
