Canon 5D Mark III - Button for Exposure Compensation?

I have a question about the 5D3:
When I'm shooting in Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority, is there a way to dial in Exposure Compensation without taking my eyes off the viewfinder? The reason I ask is because I can't find a button for EC anywhere on the camera (all I see is a button for Flash Exposure Compensation, which is something else). The only way I know how to dial in EC right now is by going into the menu or quick menu.

Thanks!

Canon EF 1.4x II vs EF 1.4x III

Can anyone here provide photographic comparisons between the Canon EF 1.4x II and EF 1.4x III that actually show the EF 1.4x III is really as sharp or possibly better that the EF 1.4x II?

I see all sorts of claims that say the 1.4x III is slightly sharper and has higher contrast, but I have yet to see a photographic comparison that actually proves that.

I looked at the comparisons between these two teleconverters on the digital picture for both the 200mm f2 and the 70-200 f2.8 IS II at 200mm. In both cases I believe the 1.4x II is actually sharper and higher contrast, regardless of the conclusions they drew.

I already have a 1.4x II but am considering a second 1.4x teleconverter, since I frequently carry two or three bodies. I was leaning to the 1.4x III, but I have yet to see any comparison or claims from Canon that would convince me to spend the extra money.

AF point illumination revisited- 6D AF point question

Just returned from a trip where I had taken the 5DII and the 5Dc. In the 7 days, had sort of gotten used to the AF point illumination of the 2 cameras. Came back to my 5DIII, and the lack of AF illumination was a nasty reminder of the issue. I truly wish Canon could somehow fix this issue... :(
I have been contemplating a 6D as a backup- can anyone tell me how its AF points behave?

We’ve had more mentions of the telephoto lens to be announced with the EOS 7D Mark II on September 5, 2014. We’re told it is indeed the replacement to the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS. This is something we’ve heard a lot about over the years, but it has to come true some day, right? (memories of the 24-70 f/2.8 replacement)

Anything Strobist

Hi all! Let me know if there's a thread like this that I missed.

I wanted to create a thread where we post our strobist pictures (speedlites and or studio strobes) ONLY, and give info about how it was made, perhaps a BTS shot and where we positioned the light and how we modified and perhaps some post process tips. I find it's a great way to learn for newbies and a great way for experienced users to pick up new ideas.

I'll start with two simple shots from today of my kids having fun.

They are all done with two bare bulb (no modifier) 600 RT triggered by the st-e3 camera left. I used HSS (highspeed sync) to bring down the ambient to be able to use a 1.4 aperture. Camera right I used the sun for edge/rim light. I really like hard light, and I have been kind of worried about it before as it can be absolutely horrible, but found that it actually can be really cool. Adds lots of punch and contrast, and for flat children's faces it creates more definition.

Looking for recommendations for an online photo storage website

Hello,
I've volunteered to help out my local 4-H group in regards to setting up a website/online storage site that will allow the club members to upload photos that they have taken at 4-H events, but not delete them. We have quite a few members of our local 4-H group that do not have, or do not bother, to take photographs of 4-H events, members, etc. and when it comes time to produce and turn in yearly record books, some of the kids do not have photographs to add. The 4-H leadership wants to offer a "public" (only to 4-H members) repository where members who do take photographs of events can upload their pictures for the kids to use. The problem has been that people upload photos to, say google drive, but then when they are finished, they delete them before others have a chance to use them.
I have not tried many online photo/storage options, but what I'd like to do is to set up a solution with two logins - one for administrators that have complete control, and one for members who can upload, download, but not delete the images. At the end of the year, the photos will be purged or archived in preparation for the next year. Of course, free solutions are the best, but pay solutions are not off the table. Is this something that can be done on a One-Drive account?

Thanks for your assistance.

Unknown lenses with Canon Explorers

I recently checked the kitbags of the Canon Ambassadors and Explorers and found that
a) Quentin Caffier is using a EF 24-70/2.8 L IS USM: http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/ambassadors/explorers/quentin_caffier.do and
b) Andrey Golovanov and Sergey Kivrin use a EF-S 17-35/2.8 IS USM on their 1D series cameras :o : http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/ambassadors/explorers/andrey_golovanov_and_sergey_kivrin.do
Do you think these are typos or real hints for new lenses? :)

Deciding Between Canon 24mm f/2.8 IS and Canon 28mm f/2.8 IS

I've recently become very interested in street photography. I've come to the realization that my 17-40mm f/4L, 40mm f/2.8 STM, and 50mm f/1.4 USM are not suitable for this type of photography on APS-C sensors. The 17-40 is just too large of a lens and the 40mm and 50mm are too cropped in. I've decided that I want a fast wide-angle prime. Sure, 24mm and 28mm aren't wide angle per se on APS-C sensors, but with full frame in my future, one of them seems like a good investment.

Now, I've decided to get one of these Canon primes with IS because I have a physical deformity that hinders stabilization on my part. But I'm stuck deciding between the two focal lengths. I've run some tests at 24mm and 28mm with my 17-40, but I can't make up my mind. With street photography becoming something I want to experiment with more, which lens would you all recommend? Do any of you have experience with these new IS primes?

Thanks for your help!

Dragonfly is an innovative, multi-lens array designed for ultra-low surface brightness astronomy at visible wavelengths. Commissioned in 2013, the array is proving capable of detecting extremely faint, complex structure around galaxies.

According to Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmology, structure in the Universe grows from the “bottom up”, with small galaxies merging to form larger ones. Evidence of such mergers can be seen in faint streams and filaments visible around the Milky Way Galaxy and the nearby M31 galaxy.

Image Copyright University of Toronto

But the CDM model predicts that we should see more of this structure than is currently observed. However, images obtained using even the largest, most advanced telescopes today contain scattered light that may be hiding this faint structure.

Dragonfly is designed to reveal the faint structure by greatly reducing scattered light and internal reflections within its optics. It achieves this using ten, commercially available Canon 400mm lenses with unprecedented nano-fabricated coatings with sub-wavelength structure on optical glasses.

Experience with Sony RX100 M3 and A7

I went to a store yesterday and tried out the Sony RX100 M3 and the A7. I had very high expectations, but the cameras did not live up to them. I found them both to be too aggressively sharpened and noise-reduced in JPEG mode, which lead to immense artefacts, starting at ISO320 with the RX100 M3. I also hated the EVF, when you panned, the picture was only one blur... 1 minute through this VF and you get a headache. With the A7 the artefacts started to appear later, but they appeared; I did also not like the layout and the menu. The salesman and I searched for a minute to find the language settings... I found the dial on the back to be not good to turn and the C1 and Fn button to be not good to reach. Of course, there were positive things, but I only listed the negative ones.
Have you got similar experiences with these cameras? :)

Polarizer filter on the 70-200 2.8

Sorry for all my questions, but I still need some advice.
I've bought a Lee filter system for the 16-35mm.
Apart from that, I used a pol.filter (circulair) on my 15-85mm which I've sold.
Going to Scotland, do you think I need a circulair pol. filter for the 70-200mm 2.8 II and if so, which one, or do you think I will not miss it?
Thanks again for reading my question.

DSLR ? - thinking out loud ....

According to the Wall Street Journal DSLR sales fell in fiscal 2013 by 10%. Pocket size point and shoot cameras by even more and DSLM (mirror-less) cameras by only about 3%.

All of this is in part due to smart phone cameras of course. In the case of DSLM’s a 3% drop could easily be the economy, but a 10% drop in the case of DSLR’s is more representative of a market trend. Canon of course is only one player in the market but its one of the biggest players. The 10% represents every manufacture of DSLRs world wide.

Still the question is, what does it mean? It depends, if the 10% slides down to 11-13% then the DSLR market is not dead, but likely dying.

SONY’s full frame mirror-less camera A7s is being closely watched by the camera market. A recent announcement by SONY regarding a new CMOS sensor (yet unreleased) is going to use faster readouts and thereby a significant reduction in issues with rolling shutter distortions.

I predict that Canon may take the whole rebel line to mirror-less design. Or a major product line re-alignment of come kind. Either way I think the clock is ticking on DSLR cameras not sure when that might start to happen. The cameras and lens’s are now (as compared to other technology) to heavy and bulky for many and the purely professional market alone is just not large enough to sustain that market. What of all that DSLR glass? Thats a pretty heavy investment for sure. It might be the 5D and 1DC may be all that survives of that stuff.
SONY an Panasonic has already proved there are plenty of compelling choices for interchangeable lens cameras without DSLR technology.

I still think that if the DSLR market slides even two percentage points Canon will have to make a move.

Gear insurance? I must have gone to the wrong place. Your advice requested

I've seen several topics here previously about insuring your gear against theft or damage and I'm sorry I can't find that thread for reference.

I went to a State Farm agent and requested a quote to cover my inventory that totals about $45K. They sent a proposal for $850/annually which is much more than I recall hearing from other shooters here.

Who are others using for insurance?

Thanks again for your help. This is better than Dear Abby.... ::)

Anyone here been to Punta Cana?

Yes, yet another travel light but get all my potential focal lengths and apertures which I might want thread.

I will be at an all inclusive but will venture out a few times. (Probably use the 40 for those trips)This is strictly for holiday with a lot of drinking/sun/family/water laziness etc.

I'm taking a 5D3 and an S95, but haven't made up my mind on lenses. I am thinking small hotel safe, light packing, focal length needs, my styles. Hate this. lol, I'll be packing in an Incase sling fwiw.

Here are my two ideas for a small bag:

1. Heavier- 5D3+ Sigma 24-105, Sigma 35 1.4, 40 pancake
I'd have a walk around for day, prime for low light and a tiny semi normal lens (discreet and light) for excursions.

2. Lighter- 5D3 + 40 Pancake and 100L Macro
Primes aren't as versatile but these are super light lenses as most here know. I'd lose my UWA but I like the 40's perspective and colors. We all know how awesome the 100L is for flowers and family.

Anyone who has been to Bavaro beach? What did you find you used the most?

TIA

70-200 4 IS or 70-200 2.8 II IS? Quality vs weight? I know 2.8 is quite heavy?

Yes, about these two, I've used 100 2.8L macro, love it for beauty work, don't use it enough to actually buy it, but it is a great lens. I also use 24-105 as my walk around lens, and it is great for that, however, I'm looking for my new go to lens for studio work.

I shoot mostly studio work, beauty, stills, and portraits.

Now, how sharper is the 2.8 over the 4.0? Chromatic aberrations? I've read all the reviews, and I concluded that except that it's much slower(less bokeh), that it is only marginally less sharp?

I know I want 4.0 for the weight savings, and non-IS version is not an option. Is the 2.8 really that much better if I
don't need 2.8 aperture?

How about distortion? I really like 0 distortion on the macro lenses. My most used focal lengths are 35,50,70 and 105(which would probably be 135-150 on 70-200 lens).

EF-S 10-18mm Image Stabilizer System

Just picked up a 10-18mm for my sister-in-law, who is getting ready to head to Europe. I noticed in the instruction manual that it says the image stabilizer only works on the EOS 7D and only at 18mm. I was not able to hear anything kicking in when I tested the lens on my 20D at very low shutter speeds. I haven't seen this limitation mentioned in reviews. Am I misreading this? If not, folks should really know about this before replacing a 10-22 and thinking they're getting image stabilization.
