New body for better focus system

This is my first post here, even been around for a couple years.

I'm here to ask for help to decide which Canon camera body deserves my investment.

I'm a amateur photographer seen the things getting a bit serious. I'm starting to make some money with photography, mostly working as second photographer for a pro. In this cases, I use Nikon system (D700 plus a bunch of prime 1.4 lens), and everything works very well. But, when I need to work with my Canon equipment (650 + 50mm 1.4 + Sigma 18-35 1.8 ...) I feel that I need better equipment.

My main "issues" with my equipment are:
- Slow focus
- Less than ideal focus precision
- Slow burst
- Maybe the lack of a micro adjustment focus system

So, the options I can see, are:
- Canon 70D
- Wait for an possible 7D Mk II
- Go full frame.

The problems that I can see, are:
- 70D can be not enough to solve my "issues", I don't know how faster and precise it's focus system is, when compared with my 650D.
- A new 7D is just a rumor
- Go full frame can be out of my budget, if I need to by a 5D Mk III to achieve my needs. A 6D can be possible, but I don't know if his focus system is better than the one in 70D.

Any opinion about my case?

I recently upgraded from the original 5D to the MKIII, wanting video capability, but having never done video before. Thought I'd share my first clips and ask for any advice on how to improve. I'd like to practice the technical aspects of capturing video correctly before I stray too far into the editing side of it, and am still struggling with things like flicker in the time lapse bits, etc. Thanks for watching!

another...would you?

Hi,
currently I don't have any lens reaching above 200mm (unless I use a non-canon 2x converter on the MDP). I have been considering the Sigma 150-500mm or even the Tamron 150-600mm
To fund either purchase, either the Ts-e 90mm (choice #1 to sell) or the Zeiss T18mm will be sacrificed :'( as much as I like both, the truth is they don't see much use lately.
I like the sigma option more, as it' available right now, great price, and I would say better buit quality compared with Tamron.
So, would you do it?
...just trying to get some feedack and opinions to make my mind once for all.
Thanks
Phil

5DIII CF vs SD slot performance?

Hi guys,

I've recently purchased a 5DIII, to get some practice in before my holiday as the 7D2 won't be ready in time. I was wondering what the performance difference was when shooting CF vs SD, what with the dual slots.

I've got some OK speed (266x and 600x) CF cards and some OK speed SD cards (30mb/s and 45mb/s). My reason for asking is that I have a raft of the SD cards, accrued over the last few years for shooting twin 60D, and not many CFs. I was wondering if when on safari I ran out of CF space, I could switch to SD, but how much fps would I loose?

I'll be mainly using the 5DIII for lanscape and closeup animals, but might want to set it to rapid fire, or even video if anything interesting happens.

Many thanks,

Grant

What's Would You Keep? [The anti-G.A.S. thread]

If you had to sell or give away most of your gear and were only able to keep a few items that you own, what would it be? The idea is to think about what gear is most essential and how little gear you could live with and instead of thinking about what to buy (G.A.S.), think about what to keep. I'll start things off:

Sigma 35mm f/1.4 ART questions

Good day,
I'm planning to buy 35mm lense and my doubt is about Sigma's built quality. I know that this is a perfect lense, sharp and fast, but is it as unkillable as the canon 35mm 1.4?

The fact is I don't care much about dark corners, extreme sharpness etc, I think canon 35mm is as well extremely sharp. Vignetting can be creative also.

I heard that Sigma's autofocus is a mess sometimes, can this be the reason for choosing canon?

In other words, I like the picture made with Sigma (it's very NIKON-alike), but I'm afraid of some small things like micro adjustments and I don't wan't to buy some docstations.

your experience of buying very old EF L lenses

I have the opportunity to buy a very old L lens. It's a 15 to 16 years 70 200 2.8L. Cosmetically, it's in very good condition. There are only a few small scratches on the body.
The glasses have no problem. No scratches, no fungus etc. No abnormality in auto focusing - quite fast outdoor and no strange noise.
I tested it on my 7D and the images are sharp and the bokeh is nice looking.
Seller is asking for $780.
Should I go for it ?
What are the potential problem of a lens that old ? Electronics AF problem or others ??
For that amount of money, I may acquire a newer F4 IS. But the tank built pro grade 2.8 is very tempting.

Please share your view and experience.

Need help deciding on my next lens

I very recently bought a Canon 70d (which I am loving so far), and am now on the hunt for my next lens. Currently I have the following lenses in my bag:

Canon 50mm f/1.8
Canon 60mm f/2.8 macro
Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8
I also have the kit lens that came with my Rebel XTi years ago but I never use it.

The Sigma 28-70 stays on my camera most of the time when I'm out and about, but I've found that it's a bit soft and some of the pictures I take with it tend to have a yellow tint to them.

I'd really, really love to get the 24-70 L, and I see that since the second version has come out the previous is down to about $1,500. That's my max budget, though, so I wanted to get some opinions on whether there's another lens out there that might be cheaper and work for me just as well for a lens I can use while out and about.

Here are the lenses I'm considering plus their current pricing (approximately):
Canon 24-70 f/4 L ($1500)
Canon 24-105 f/4 L ($1150)
Canon 17-40 f/4 L ($839)
Canon 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 ($649)
Sigma 15mm f/2.8 fisheye (I rented this years ago and found it neat and unbelievably sharp. Plus it's only $609)

I'd love to get some feedback on any of these lenses, or possibly others that I've left out of my consideration. Thanks in advance!

Goodbye Canon 5d mk III- I loved you, but need to move on!

:'( Goodbye my dear 5d mk III . You were my first "real" love. You were so quick and comfortable in my hands. I loved the way you felt. When we were together, we were "one in the same". You were the peanut butter to my jelly. Simply amazing and skilled in every aspect. Your resolution, dynamic range and AF were as real as it got. I even loved your previous model almost as much. You were my "King of the World."

I have decided its time to move on. We just don't see eye to eye anymore. I need more! You see, I have grown and you have remained static. You're not willing to change. You sit idly by while my new friend, Nikon, keeps growing. She will have upgraded quite a few times since you came to market. She knows that I need more and she is willing to give it me. She has more dynamic range now, a great AF system and, as you already know, more MP. She is willing to give me the resolution when I enlarge. You're not! And, she will feel better in my hand.

And, don't feel to bad. I'm sure you will get your chance to change and improve. I know you will eventually, but I am tired of waiting and the false promises. I hear whispers and rumors hear and there, but they are nothing more than that. I also know you are do for a "change" and I do believe it will happen by the end of the year. I cannot survive on the false promises. And based upon your past, I'm sure your price will be a lot higher.

However, I will never forget you. I will remember the fun we had in Maine, Oregon, and Yellowstone. I will never forget the time we traveled thousand of miles to banff national park, only to be flooded out for five days. I will also remember the time we got soaked under the waterfall in Iceland. Those were great memorable times!

Do I regret anything? Well, let's just say that I wish we had more resolution together. We could have printed so much lager than 32x48. It would have made all the difference in the world to me. I want to leave you with one final thought as you find a new home. Don't let the door hit you in the A$$. :o

Live View Display blackout after shot? 70D

Hi,

The 70D is my first DSLR with live view. There is a significant period when the LCD is black after a shot, even if I turn off image preview. The same thing happens when shooting video and then you fire off some stills. What is up with that?

My Fuji X100S does not do that. I usually keep the image preview on for that camera, but if you turn it off, there is no significant blackout period after a shot on the LCD or the EVF.

Am I doing something wrong with the 70D? I tried using JPEG rather than RAW and that made no difference. You will probably say just use the optical viewfinder, don't use live view. But that is not an answer for when I want to shoot stills while shooting video. Plus I bought a magnifying eyepiece viewfinder for the LCD screen (to shoot video outside) and that works really well, but then you can't use the optical viewfinder and must shoot live view stills.

I am kinda disappointed with the live view performance of the 70D. Seems like something for flower shots or landscape but not action (which is basically my reason for owning the 70D other than video)

A Summary of Sigma Lens Rumors

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=16852"></g:plusone>

A summary with the probability of upcoming Sigma lenses has appeared on sigma-rumors.com. Most of the lenses mentioned have been written about here in the past. Sigma’s focus over the last 2 years has been on high quality and affordable offerings, there’s no reason to think that won’t continue.

The most likely lenses to appear next would be:

24mm f/1.4 DG ART

85mm f/1.4 DG ART

Both of these lenses have a chance to appear at Photokina in a couple of months. I’d say the 85mm f/1.4 is a given, but the 24mm f/1.4 could fall to later this year or early 2015. With Zeiss expected to announce their Otus 85mm f/1.4 in September, Sigma could play spoiler with an optically great lens with autofocus at a much cheaper price.

The other lenses according to the site with the highest probability of happening are:

24-70mm f/2 DG ART

300-600mm f/? OS Sport

We’ve heard about both of these in the past, and I’m inclined to believe the supertelephoto zoom is definitely something Sigma is developing. The 24-70mm f/2, I’m not 100% sure on. If Sigma wants to differentiate themselves from the Canon and Nikon offerings, then such a lens would do the trick.

Kai from DigitalRev has completed his video review of the brand new Canon EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens. This $299 lens for APS-C shooters seems to be getting a lot of praise, most of which is based around its extremely affordable price.

I have used the lens a couple of times and find it to be nearly as good as the EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5, especially as an ultra wide angle walk around lens in cities. Pair it with an EOS Rebel SL1, and you have a pretty good light weight hiking setup as well.

You can only buy Canon gear in a month with an R ?

Sure wish it were possible to buy Canon gear in a month without an R. It sure is a severe test of my patience to have to wait until the winter sales start up again. On my purchase list sits a 24-70 f/4, a 70-200 f/2.8, and maybe a second 6d body. Also a 55-250 STM for my SL1 would be nice too. But i can't buy anything because the prices are crazy this time of year! This happens every year.

For example, $1500 for a 24-70 f/4? Based on the current 'reputable' gray-market prices, the real market price for authorized resellers is probably about $1000. Certainly i wouldn't pay any more for it. But all the resellers are being forced by Canon to list it for $1500! I wonder if B&H has sold a single 24-70 f/4 in the last couple months? Is this any way to run a business? Sell your product at a price no one will pay?

Oh well. I did succumb to temptation and order the new 16-35 f/4. Mainly because the price doesn't seem too crazy for it and i don't expect the price to drop much in the next several months.

Any voodoo cures for Err80?

One of my 1Ds3 bodies is throwing the Err80 message and hanging up, only to be awoken with battery removal. The body did not suffer any event that I saw or knew, like a fall or static discharge. I have tried three different cards in the body, and it will hang on the first shot with all of them. I left the body without its battery for a whole night as one Canon suggestion reported or quoted said a long time should be taken for reset and I was willing to try anything.

I did reformat the cards in this body during one of those cycles -- before trying an exposure. Hung again. More than one Canon lens tried, too. Batteries Canon stock. Two brands of cards eventually went in the sockets, both CF and SD.

Betting it's an expensive deep dive into the body but must pay for a fix. Anyway, I'd be hesitant to take this on a job -- unless I got a very witch-doctor certain fix. Eye of Newt anyone?

Just checking before I send it off to Irvine.

Formula One from Silverstone

Hi all,

First new thread I've started here so be gentle. Headed to the British GP at Silverstone last weekend for the F1, photos mainly taken on Friday due to fewer spectators.

All shot through the fence from general access areas, no accreditation using 5D iii and 400mm f5.6 often with 1.4x.

Any C&C more than welcome :) thanks in advance

Work is pretty slow today, so I thought I'd start another thread - this time of some of my favorite neighbors here in Florida - American Alligators or gators as we call them around here.

Seeing Rebels....

So we spent the July 4th weekend at Williamsburg, VA and was at Busch gardens this past weekend. For some reason I started noticing peoples' DSLRs. Based on my observation, the Canon rebels probably outnumber any other DSLR 4-1.

The family we were with had a T3 and kit lens while I was lugging a 6D with a 24-105. Seems most other families who had rebels just have kit lenses. I even saw a family of 5 lugging 3 rebels with them.

Do you have the same observation across all the theme parks in the US and even the rest of the world? Maybe this is jus here in the US.

Canon seems to have the correct formula to the consumer/entry-level market. Not quite sure what "it" is? If I had to start today I might not even pick Canon or recommend one (entry level only) to a friend. They are not the MP king, sensor / IQ not leading edge and there are others which are cheaper - attributes consumers usually look for. But I surely have my reasons why I'm sticking with them. Maybe it's just in the brand and marketing.

Eos7D mk2, How EXCITED will you be if . . .?

I'd thought we'd start the week looking forward to something. What features / performance levels would get you excited about the 7D2?

I want a positive statement from you about what would legitimately fire you up to own a 7D2. No snarky "APS-C is not for me so I'll say 'A 50 MP FF sensor', ha ha" stuff. Seriously, what would get you excited when the 7D2 announcement comes?

Disclaimer: I'm not trying poke fun at Ivan's original thread so much as build some excitement around a release. Mondays need positive thoughts because they are, in fact, Mondays.

Eos7D mk2, How disappointed will you be if . . .?

it has the same sensor as the Eos70D but with just more bells & whistles?

I have a sneaky feeling that maybe its going to be the same image quality as the 70D just more robust, full frame viewfinder, gazillion frames per second, wifi, gps and class leading video...So just how disappointed will you be if that is the case?

Lets face it the Sony sensors are pretty good, if not class leading, probably as good as it's going to get at the moment, so just why will Canon have such better sensor technology as Sony's? Nothing in the recent history of Canon sensor technology suggests otherwise...

If, and its a big if, they bring out a ID mkIV size sensor it will be great, but maybe its also an indication that they just could not squeeze out anymore image quality with their R&D at present....which begs the question then why they don't just buy Sony sensors? Would anybody mind a Sony sensors in Eos bodies?
