Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM "Classic" is now a cult lens!

Now that the new Sigma 50 Art lens is out, the old DG HSM version has been feeling neglected. So I'm declaring it to be a cult lens!

It may not be as sharp as the Art lens, but there's just something magical about it's rendering, you know?

I will try to find and post some more images that aren't too naughty. Feel free to post your own if you have this lens and join the new cult. :)

With:
i) speculation of there being a few prototype floating in the real world,
ii) knowing the various competitor offerings and
iii) factoring in the range of current Canon models,

it's hard to really know where exactly Canon plans to slot the 7D Mark-II into their DSLR portfolio.

I'm interested to know where you think the "real gap" is in Canon's lineup is. People have mentioned that certain pro features would be a deal breaker for them, while other seem to love the idea of such features. I see the 7D line (much like the 6D) as a key product from a brand awareness perspective (aka gateway drug), leading to bigger and better things. I have no doubt that the 7D-II would be heavily marketed as a result.

Considering a potentially large ATL marketing spend in a market with dwindling sales, timing would be critical. The strategy around the 7D-II product release would therefore most likely be influenced by Nikon's market activities. I believe that Canon would not want a product so important in their DSLR line to be one-upped by a strategic Nikon release. This combined with excessive stock of 7D bodies is perhaps the reason for such a long delay with releasing an update.

Anyway, In terms of the poll the one other spec to definitely link discussion to is what RAW buffer size you think would be reasonable. Lastly, in terms of AF system, it almost seems a given that some incarnation of the current 61pt AF system would be implemented, but this is not necessarily the case. If you have any different ideas please share.

Educate me about AF systems

A few months back, a birder who just bought a 200-400 spoke of its performance on both the 5D3 and the 1DX.

He was perplexed as to why the 1DX (his friend's camera) was able to nail near perfect sharpness for a burst of up to 20 shots whereas the 5D3 (his camera), could only offer a return of roughly 40%.

As I had read that both bodies had the exact same AF systems, this struck me as odd.

Monday past I spent a few minutes chatting to a Canon repair agent. He said sure, they both have the same AF system but the 1DX has a dedicated processor that can identify a subject like a bird, person or ball and hold focus on it, whether the scene is somewhat crowded or even if that subject was to move in an erratic fashion.

I'm now very interested in understanding the components that make up the full AF system.

What would differentiate the 9 point AF system of say the 5D2 from that of the 500D's 9 point AF system? Would software of the superior 5D2 provide an advantage to its AF system?

Another question I have is, what happens when a subject is between AF points? If I'm tracking a bird in flight and for whatever reason, the bird ends up in a space between the camera's AF points, does this mean the bird is essentially in a blind spot and focus on the bird will be lost?

If I am making the correct assumption in the above paragraph, is this why action and wild life togs want as many AF as possible?

So another assumption from me is that the AF points are created through software. But are there electrical components that will prevent Canon from improving the AF system at a later stage with more AF points?

Software + Processor + Lens = AF System or not?

(My apologies if my questions are naive or silly but I do enjoy understanding these things.
Thanks guys ☺️)

Prints required for display at wedding - recommendations please!

Hello US members of Canon Rumors,

I'm based in the UK but getting married later in the year in Memphis, TN, USA (my fiancee's home town). We would like to put up a photographic display at the wedding showing memories of our time together so far. We're thinking somewhere between 20 and 50 images around 12"x8" (maybe smaller). We'd only use the images for the one day and are therefore not looking to spend a fortune on the absolute highest quality prints (total spend of maybe $300 or under). We're not sure exactly what style of prints we're after yet but ideally something with a bit of a mount (e.g. 1/8" polystyrene mount) would be ideal, but I guess paper would be fine too. We'd display on a temporary wall (the kind you see at trade shows and conferences, assuming the hotel has some!).

Do any of you have any recommendations for a good online print service that would deliver to the US? I've used www.ezprints.com about 5-6 years ago but their website has changed a lot since and I think they might be after a different target market these days.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Have EF-S 10-18mm & EF-S 10-22mm

Hey, my 10-18 came yesterday and it's pretty cool. I shoot primarily video and have been using the 10-22 on a glidecam or tripod the past year. From spec comparisons I've read the 10-22 is a better lens, but it's close and realistically I'll use the 10-18 more with it's STM and IS.

For a little while I'll have both lenses (at least until I ebay the 10-22). I haven't seem direct comparisons online yet and thought it might be fun taking the same shots back to back on a tripod - or anything else you can suggest to compare the two?

EF-S 10-18mm - a few early photos on SL1 & Sony a6000

I received mine a couple of days ago and briefly tried it on two successive days walking home from work via City Hall in Philadelphia, the first day with it attached to the Sony a6000, the second to the Canon SL1. Here are a few photos from each day, mostly within parts of the building. All off-the-cuff, hand-held tourist-dodging stuff, mostly at 10mm, nothing fancy:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/125326482@N07/sets/72157644720350428/

In some there's a bit of flare and ghosting (in a couple of the outdoor shots on the Canon the lens was aimed at the sun), some of which may be related to the cheap filter that Adorama threw in for free (I'll try it later with no filter and then with a better quality one). All are raw files processed via lightroom 5; a few had shadows lightened (the outdoor light was hideous each day), but otherwise the tweaks were minor.

I'm amazed by how little distortion the lens creates - most of the time I saw nothing that needed correcting, though just for the heck of it I applied the lens profile for the 11-22mm EOS-M (it worked better than the profile for its predecessor; there's no profile for the new lens yet, of course). It's miles better in terms of distortion at 10mm than the 24-105L is at 24mm, for instance, and better than any other similar wide-angle lens I've tried (if my memory is right, that is).

I included a few Sony a6000 photos to show the far-corner vignetting I mentioned elsewhere. (Aside from that vignetting - which only shows up at 10mm, varies with the light and often disappears completely with minor distortion tweaking - I'm inclined to think that the photos it makes on the Sony are on the whole slightly better when viewed closely, but it would take controlled testing to reach a firm conclusion either way; I'll leave that to someone else....)

Anyway, make of them what you will....

Having issues with focussing. I use Combo (50mm f1.4 & 5D Mark III)

I had Canon 5D Mark III for almost a year and mainly I was using Canon 24-105mm f4. I didn't like the lens in the night shots, even mornings when I'm taking shots in shade or so. Friends recommended the canon 50mm f1.4, so I got it and I love the fact that it allows me to shoot in side home or outside without even bother of carrying a flash however, I HAVE BIG ISSUE WITH THE FOCUS. The only sharp part of the photo is where I place the focus point and every other part of the photo is blurry.

I don't like the fact I can't even shoot a photo for couple because only one of them will be in focus but not the other.

Am I making something wrong?
Or that's how the lens is?
Or I should return it and get another one?

Please advise and upload for me photos you took with the same setup (If you have)

Rogue Flashbender Diffusion Kit vs actual softbox

I'm looking into ExpoImaging Rogue line of products. I see that you can combine a
Large Rogue Flashbender Reflector + Large Rogue Diffusion Panel to make a "large softbox" (9"x8").
XL Pro Rogue Flasbehnder Reflector + XL Pro Rogue Diffusion Panel to make a "XL softbox" (roughtly 11"x13")

For anybody who has used these quasi-softboxes, I am wondering how you think they compare to traditional softboxes? Are these Rogue contraptions a gimmick, or can they legitimately mimic the light quality of a real softbox?

For example:
Rogue Large "softbox" vs Lastolite Ezybox Speed-Lite (8"x8")?
or
Rogue XL Pro "softbox" vs Lastolite Ezybox Hot Shoe Softbox (24"x24")?

Perhaps the 2nd one isn't a completely fair comparison since the Ezybox is larger, but I hope you get the gist of what I'm asking.

Thanks!

Gel Systems: Honl vs Rogue? (and is 600EX's gel holder viable?)

Looking for opinions into the Honl vs Rogue gel kit systems. Pros/Cons of one over the other. Any feedback would be appreciated! Haven't invested in either system yet.

Also, I am wondering if anybody here with a 600EX-RT actually uses the included gel holder? I know that if you use the official Canon-cut CTO that the speedlite will supposedly auto-detect its existence and modify the flash exposure. What happens if you cut your own gel and stick it into the holder? Anyway, I'm just wondering if anybody actually uses the Canon gel holder for real shoots or if it's just a gimmick.

Cold Shoe for 600EX-RT?

Hi, I'm trying to find the best cold shoe for 600EX-RT, one that is known to have a solid fit.

Anybody know if Stroboframe Cold Shoe (300-405) is a good fit?
I tried skimming via CTRL+F through both the B&H and Amazon reviews and couldn't find any reviewers mentioning if it was good for the 600EX-RT.

I know that there is a similar one made by Vello .
It's got like 1-2 guys saying they use it with their 600EX-RT, but not much detail about how good the fit is.

I also looked at the Frio Cold Shoe v2, which got good reviews from Syl Arena, but unfortunately the weather sealing ring on the 600EX-RT doesn't make it fit well.

If anybody uses the Stroboframe with a 600EX-RT, please let me know how it is.

Looking for New Compact Advice

Hi everyone! I've been a longtime Canon Rumors reader/lurker, but never got around to registering or asking a question until today. I've been wanting to get back into photography as a hobby. I used to shoot regularly with my EOS A2E and 3 (yeah, it's been awhile).

So, to my question. I had a Canon Elph 310 that I used for day to day shooting. It was pretty convenient since it fits in pockets and had some decent features. It got wet during a rainstorm as my bags were being loaded on a plane (water literally came out of the battery compartment), so I'm looking for a replacement.

While I usually use Canon, I'm not adverse to others. I'm primarily looking for a compact that is small (fits in pockets), is inexpensive ($200-300ish), and perhaps is a bit of a step up from the Elph 310. I was looking at the Powershots and was thinking the SX700 and SX600 looked interesting. I was wondering your thoughts on these or other compacts. I'd like to start shaking off some of the rust (and dust off my SLRs) of my shooting skills!

Thanks for any and all advice!

New EF 16-35mm F/4L IS lens hands-on video and still samples

FYI for those eager to see the new 16-35 F/4L IS -- a short hands-on video and some sample shots are here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl0cTEDzD6k

Most important thing I learned (see 1:30 in the video):

It's internal zooming/focusing if you define that as nothing protrudes past the filter ring of the lens. But there is no front element that covers the entire lens, so that zooming motion leaves a sliding surface that is exposed to the elements. If you've shot a 50L, the relationship is similar (but obviously being a prime, that sliding is a focusing motion and not a zooming motion).

For me, that's technically internal zooming/focusing for length but not for access to dust/moisture; with (say) a 70-200 lens, that zooming motion is entirely captured behind a front element, which I have to say gives me a little more peace of mind when shooting in the elements.

Yes, normally I would UV or CPL this lens for handheld use anyway, but with an ND grad setup that you use right on the lens, this could be a potential for dust/moisture to get into the lens. Seaside landscape shooters -- do you care about this? (I never bought an ultrawide since I moved to FF, so I don't know if this is similar to the 16-35 F/2.8L or 17-40 F/4L and you've been coping with this limitation for a while anyway...)

He also goes on to say IS doesn't do much in wide angles... for video. [Cue drum fill.] If it gives me 3-4 more stops of handholdability in low light for my stills, this lens will be golden IMHO.

Filter for Tamron 150-600?

Hi guys,

I've done it. Placed my order for the mighty 150-600 last night, hopefully it should arrive before September.

There aren't many (good) 95mm filters arround and all are pretty expensive, I know there are cheaper non-branded, but I want a good quality filter for wildlife shots. So, what one would you recommend?

So far I've found these in the £75-100 range:
- Sigma EX DG Ultra Violet (UV) Filter - Super Multi-Coated
- B+W F-Pro SC 010 Brass Clear UV 70179
- Marumi DHG
- NiSi DW1 WIDE BAND PRO MC UV
- Hama HTMC Coated UV Filter 390 (O-Haze)
- Hoya UV(O)

Many thanks in advance,

Grant :)

Black Rapid attached to Battery Grip?

Hi fellow forum'ites, I've only just switched to the Black Rapid system after contemplating it for some time. I'm really loving it. Still getting used to having my gear hanging by my side but feels safer than I imagined it would.

I've gone the route many have in that I have an RS-Sport strap attached to a 1" QR Kirk clamp which either clamps on to my 5D Mark III Kirk camera plate or my 70-200 f2.8L II tripod collar Kirk plate. Really love this setup. I use the Stealth FastenR too to keep things nice and quiet.

However I've also got the battery grip for my camera and so if I want to attach the strap to this in the same way I'd need to buy the Kirk plate designed specially for the grip.

Before I spend more money I'd like to ask what people's thoughts are on connecting the Black Rapid to a battery grip?
I'm satisfied with the weight hanging from the tripod mounts on the body and lens collar but I just worry that hanging all that weight on the battery grip could cause problems. Not so much with the tripod screw mount on it but the strain on the connection between where the grip and body attach together.

Am I worrying needlessly? :o Any thoughts welcome.

Canon EOS 70D or EOS 7D, bodies compared

For those that might be interested, I have just posted a comprehensive comparison of the EOS 70D and 7D dslr bodies. In the text, I tried to cover pretty much everything that might be of importance to nature or sport photographers that may be wondering which camera is better.
The link to the review is here: http://www.grantatkinson.com/blog/ca...os-7d-compared
In short, the 70D offers better image quality, and added versatility whilst the 7D has a speed, buffer and actual build advantage.

I have also included lots of images taken with both cameras, and shared my own experiences that come from using both of them in the field.

This thing's gotta go!

Looking through my closet/bag and wondering why in the world I was still keeping my (very) old and not-so-trusty EF 28-135 IS. I think I purchased it within months of it being released. It has long since been replaced with various other iterations, the latest being my 24-70/2.8L II. There are others lurking in the closet, including my original 5D, and the awful EF 22-55/4-5.6, that beg to be traded/sold now that they've been supplanted by later models.

Just wondering ... I thought it would be interesting to find out what y'all have in your bag that is just sitting there taking up space, not doing much of anything, and why you're not using it any longer?
