This Is How You Sell a Used Lens !!

.
Must be tough selling a used Tokina in New York...

http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/nyc/4441240957.html

For all you folks who get "bad copies" of lenses, here's how this guy dealt with that issue:

"SHARP-ASS COPY. YOU THINK A HUSTLER LIKE ME IS GOING TO SIT BACK AND GET BURNED? Ordered one from Amazon and it was soft, sent that shizzle back along with a toe so they knew I meant business - Big Lebowski style. GOT the sharpest copy in their warehouse."

200mm f/2.8 with IS?

I'd love a 200mm with IS for outdoor portraits and candids, but the Canon f/2L is out of my price range (and huge). Are there any non-Canon options at f/2.8 or faster that compare favorably with L-glass? I may consider getting the 70-200 L 2.8 IS II soon, but its size, and the overlap with my 70-300L make it an imperfect solution. Any rumors of a future Canon 200 f2.8 prime with IS?

Small camera for active kid

Hello all,

Just looking for some advice on a small camera setup for shooting action. What I would like:
• Small camera that I can put in a coat pocket or very small camera bag
• The best image quality I can get for the small form factor
• Very speedy autofocus and frame rate
• Good video quality with continuous autofocus
• Ideally a viewfinder

My objective is to have something on me that is better than my smartphone so I can take good video and action shots of my daughter. We are expecting and I know how hard it is to get out the door with just one toddler + all the required gear. If I have my DSLR gear and no diaper bag the wife is not happy ;D. I’d love to be able to shoot animals/birds/etc., but I would probably need an ILC and another lens which = cost and my wife will kill me.
Here is what I have/tried:

Canon S100 – not bad, but too slow and I don’t care for the shooting experience (no view finder, small, but not great for holding). Also video is pretty poor and I wouldn’t mind better IQ. But it is nice and small...

EOS M – I did update the firmware but I still considered it to be too slow to lock focus and it hunted too much in video. It really hurt selling this as I did enjoy it and it was a huge bang for the buck, but I sold a bunch of stuff to get the 70d and this made the list. I’ve been wanting Canon to come out with something like the Sony a6000 in the EOS-M line but it doesn’t seem like that is going to happen.

Canon 70d – technically my wife’s, but I probably use it more than she does. I should probably figure out some sort of external mic for it as the lens is too noisy and the sound quality is bad. Basically I’d like something smaller than this with the same features.

Canon 6d – my favorite camera ever and what I shoot most often with. The problem is no continuous autofocus in video and obviously the autofocus system and frame rate does not lend itself to action/wildlife shots. I love the IQ and low-light performance, though, and I am really used to it, except the stupid zoom which is different than the other cameras I've had (7D, 5D Mark II, and now 70D).

I’ve been thinking about the new Sony RX100 III or RX10 but they are really pricy for me. I typically buy used or refurbished to cut cost as this is just a hobby. I also loved the idea of the EOS M so I could use my existing lenses, but it just didn’t work out for me.

So any other recommendations? Do you think Canon will be introducing something to compete with Sony’s offerings? I can certainly wait as I have cameras I can shoot with – really in the surveying the marketplace/research phase right now (and I'll need the time and persistence to convince my wife that this is something we absolutely need and I don't know how we can continue without it.)

Thanks for reading this long post!

The Answer to Everyone's Complaints

Been thinking about this for awhile and decided I'd act on it.

If you are unhappy with Canon's perceived failure to offer (choose any of the following) high megapixel body, mirrorless full frame camera, more dynamic range, shadow detail) I propose the following:

Send me a check or Pay Pal me $2,000 as a deposit, telling me what feature you want improved.

I will deposit it in a special savings account and will not spend the money, except under the conditions I will list below.

After you and 50,000 of your like-minded friends have sent me these checks, I will forward the money to Canon as a deposit for them to use in developing the camera feature you want. It is no guarantee they will comply, but I suspect the fact that 50,000 people have demonstrated a willingness to place a $2,000 down payment on the camera of their choice, will indeed get Canon's attention.

Now, there is one condition I am placing on this offer. Anyone who starts or participates in a thread whining about how Canon isn't paying attention to them or is about to go bankrupt because their personal needs are not being attended to, I will deduct 10% of your deposit as an trolling tax.

Basically, you must put your money where your mouth is. This has the added advantage of demonstrating whether or not there is a demand for the features you find so significant.

I am willing to add accounts for other features, in case I'm missing any. By the way, it is 50,000 x $2,000 for each feature. As some of these features are contradictory, you cannot ask for more than one for each deposit.

If, after two years, any account has not reached the threshhold of 50,000 participants, I will refund the money minus a small handling fee.

What modifiers (sizes) are speedlites good for?

Hi,

I don't do much with my flashes, but every now and then I would like to try it a bit more (not professionally, just play with it and learn something). I recently booked a workshop that should have been my first studio/model shoot experience, but it was canceled just two days in advance, so I thought I’ll use the money to buy some lights/modifiers and learn on my own as until now.

I was googling some cheap alternatives as I don't feel like investing much now, but I want something more than my smallish DIY boxes. It seems that I could go with some fluorescent continuous set, or just buy something that I can stick my flashes into.

But I would like to ask you to enlighten me about lights a bit, so that I have an idea what size of softbox/octobox has my 430ex enough power for (I know, it depends... but you know, what will it just light up a bit and what will it make reasonably usable).

Examples:
Continuous set of two 60cm(23.6") X 90cm (35.4") boxes... Usable?
In description they offer more powerful bulbs (5bulbs per box, 45w vs 115w)... Necessary? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-outputs-light-head-60x90-Softbox-Studio-Continuous-lighting-kit-equals-2000W-/130747669475?pt=UK_Photography_Lighting_Units&hash=item1e712b1be3

And now, 430exII in:

Octobox... There are reasonably priced 80cm, 110cm and 120cm ones ( 32 / 43 / 47 inches)... I would like the bigger one, but is that too much to ask from a speedlite (or two mounted on one bracket)?

Will it handle this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Umbrella-Octagon-Softbox-with-Grid-For-SpeedLight-Flash-80cm-32in-/310897184030?pt=UK_Light_Controls_Softboxes_Diffusers&hash=item4862ea8d1e

Beauty dish?

Closed 110cm (43inch) umbrella?

Thank you very much!

Sigma 50mm Art on Canon 50D Focus issues

Have lots of problems getting a Sigma 50mm Art to focus with my old 50D. One in ten shots would be in focus.

The lens is incredible when its on. Best shots I got was using a tripod and using the 10 x magnification in live view to manually focus.

Have I got any unlucky sample of do I need to get myself a 5D III :P

Love the depth of field, heres a good shot at 1.4 http://500px.com/photo/72102947/sigma-art-by-dane-hawker?from=user_library

purchasing 70-200 f4 IS now?

I am planning on buying a Canon 70-200 f4 IS sometime this year. Do you guys who have been following these things longer than I have, think that now is a good time to buy? $200 rebate from "retail" from B&H for $1149.

Or do you expect better deals later around the holidays? I've seen the lens for $1049 from B&H in the past with no rebate, but am unsure on when to act. TIA

New 70-200mm MKII DUST!

Hi guys just wanted to know your opinions.

After getting some money together I bought the EF 70-200mm F2.8 IS L MKII.

Upon arrival the lens seems great but upon further inspection there is a rather large piece of dust, I say dust it is reflective. It is in the back of the lens looks between the 1st and second element.

It doesn't effect the IQ nor does it show up at all by shooting a longer exposure as a dust mark.

Im just a little disappointed after spending so much for it to arrive like this. I have a 70-20mm L 2.8 and is 20 years old and has no dust inside it so how does a brand new one have it?

Am I being over the top? Or should I be sending it back. Kind of taken the shine off the new purchase.

Here is the pic comments and opinions welcome.

Northlight has posted their initial review of the new Canon EF-S 10-18 f/4.5.5-6 IS STM lens. As you would expect the lens appears to be a very good deal at $299, although it’s not going to set any benchmarks for optical performance. It is however, a great completement to your APS-C stills or video kit if you don’t need ultra wide angle very often. If you do, there are better and more expensive options out there.

Says Northlight:

“If you’re not used to ‘shooting wide’ then this lens is a very welcome addition to Canon’s line-up. At appreciably less cost than the EF-S10-22, the 10-18mm surprised me with its build quality and optical performance. The image stabilisation adds to its general purpose usefulness and partly makes up for its relatively restricted aperture.”

Mobile studio portraits - am I doing this properly?

I did some standard portraits the other day for a guy who wanted some shots for an agency's stage background actor portfolio... that's why I tried to go for some Hollywood style with expression from earnest to smiling.

I had a plain background that happened to be available, an umbrella next to him, one flash on bracket and one flash below. The eye reflection didn't work out at all because the flashes weren't in the proper position, I need more flash tripods and a hairlight in the back. The eyes also aren't 100% in focus, obviously my lens needs some afma for that distance. Other than that, I know next to nothing about portraiture, so I'd like to ask for some feedback - thank you!

Oh no why Is it broken 2 days before a photo commitment!

Hi Folks.
So to set the scene, we are at a car show, showing our cars. The misses says to bring the camera if you want some pictures of birds, this hedge is teeming with life! Camera is a 7D with a Meike grip.
I have some custom setups so selected one, fire off a few shots, review, decide I want spot metering, press the button, nothing, press other buttons on the top, nothing. Still able to take picture, just locked in to settings. I know I'll use the Q menu, nope nothing except the DOF button and AF on working! Ok drop the main batteries, switch on to drain circuits press shutter button. Switch off batteries back in, power up, same thing. Switch off switch on battery grip, nothing changes. Great I need this in a couple of days! Check lock switch is not set to lock, though I think that only disables rear control wheel cycle the switch on the battery grip on and off a few times, all is back to normal, I breath a big sigh of relief.
So if all the buttons stop functioning and you have a grip, probably especially a third party grip this might help.
For once I'm not in need of help, just trying to give something back! ;D

Cheers Graham.

Serial Numbers Sensitive?

Hi guys, another odd question.

I've occasionally seen images of cameras that had the serial numbers blurred out, like you do for license plates.

Any reason behind that?

I ask, because I want to post shutter count for sale of some of my bodies. I can't see a reason the serial shouldn't be posted though.

Is there anything I'm missing here?

Thanks!

Cyclone DR PP-400DR Dual Outlet Power Pack for Canon 600EX-RT(x2)

Hi guys,
Would this be enough power to drive two Canon 600EX-RT?

FAST recycle time really got my attention, plus compact, Up to 1400 Full-Power Flashes(I'm good with 1000ish if recycle time still within 1sec at lower power level)

25 or 24 f p/s?

Dear all,

I've got to make a film for my work as a teacher with children. It's gotta be a funny film. Last year I made one with the 60d and a 15-85mm lens. Now I will use the mark5dIII and a 50mm 1.8 lens and maybe the 100mm L lens as well.
In the menu I can choose for several recording sizes. On youtube I found settings of 1920 .. and 24 f p/s. They also show a possibility of 30 f p/s. On my camera I can choose between 25 and 24 f p/s.
Which one is the better choice? 24?
In this film I will put some old pictures from the children. The photos will be screen filling. When I film in 24 f p/s will the film be screen filling as well or will this film be shown in another format?
Thanks for reading my questions!

Rant about 5DIII (and my oversight)

Never thought I'd be writing this, but I want to write it and get it out of my system so I don't have any more ill-feeling left about this little guy:
1. Truly surprised about the difference between 8fps and 6fps. I was shooting a commencement ceremony and trying to get the 'toss the mortarboards' shot. Boy, was it getting frustrating catching the mortarboard while still within the frame (and yes, I started clicking even before it was being tossed). Nothing like this with my 7D. Could the frame rate be restricted under certain conditions?
2. The lack of AF point illumination in Servo mode is very annoying. With dimly lit subjects in a mostly dark background, I kept losing them. And I had to stick with f/2.8 because I was using 200mm (so at least 1/250) and ISO 1600. I know pros would be fine with these, but I was terrified I shall miss the moments by focusing somewhere else...
Ok, I'm done. It was all right eventually. Just too nerve-wracking at the time.

Newbie need help to pick a used camera please

I used to borrow a T3i from my brother. Now I have saved up some money to buy a camera body for myself. I dont wanna use a rebel body coz my friends are all semi-pro bodies user. They look great and are more sturdy in their built.

For the money I have, I can afford a 50D, 60D or a 7D body.

Locally in Toronto, I can grab a 50D for $400, a 60D for $550 or a 7D for $750.

I made some inquiries responding to some CL ads and got some exciting responses.

1. A 2 years old 7D with under 10k actuation with original everything for $750. It comes with a 16gb Cf card as well. I like the built, the speed and the badge. That's my no.1 choice.

2. A 6 months old 60D with may be 4k actuation with 2 years extended warranty. No card but come with an additional third party battery. Seller told me he bought it during last boxing sale for $800 plus tax with 18 200 kit lens but now will keep the lens and sell the body for lowest $530 to me. The good point is the like new condition and warranty. But it is not the 7D and no AFMA if I need it.

3. A 50D with 14k, seems well used. Asking $450. Obviously, it's least attractive to me.

My camera will be mainly for landscape and portrait shooting. Little chance to do sports and wildlife etc at this moment. I may start learning to shoot video as well. I have access to some nice lenses. Family members are generous to share. I will buy a few primes later.

Then. Which camera body should I buy? Which one will hold better value? I don't want a T4i, T5i or an old FF 5D and I can't afford
A 70D. My choice seems limited. I guess I will go for one of the above.

Help me with my choice please.
