A speculative thought on Canon test bodies

Some rumors have indicated that Canon bodies in test eat batteries, which got me to thinking...

Suppose the new bodies are testing a triple-sensor design. That is, light is pushed through a trichromic prism to three CMOS sensors, one each for RGB. It is essentially a very old idea, but eliminating the Bayer sensor would improve both low light capability and effective resolution. Such a design would be bulky and would eat batteries, but it is a potential pathway to improved capabilities for high end DSLRs.

I suspect such a sensor array at around 40Mp (x 3) would be competitive with current MF cameras.

Just a thought. You may now return to your regularly scheduled rumors. ;D

First tilt shift lense

Good afternoon everybody, :)

I have right now a little issue.. I really want to buy a tilt shift lense, but am not quite sure which one to go for.
I'm actually not sure anymore if I should buy a tilt shift at all after seeing a video (Tiny Sydney on Vimeo) with really sick looking tilt shift effects considering the fact that no TS lens were used to make it..
Hence my two following questions:

1) Is it still worth it to buy a TS lens considering all the plugins available nowadays?
2) If yes, which one shall I go for (mainly looking into second-hand ones)? I found a couple of good looking second hand TS24mk1 for 800$ish but cannot evaluate if they are worth it since I have never used a TS lens myself.. I theoratically could afford a new one IF there were a real improvment, but would really like some help/suggestions :)

For extra info, I usually like to shoot quite wide (16-35mk2, sigma 35 art, sigma 50 mk 1.. )..

Have to make a choice, finally!

Dear all,

Yes, after months of reading, reading and loosing sleep I have to make a decision now.
I've got a Mark5dIII, 50mm 1.8 II en 100mm 2.8 L.
I like to shoot landscape, stills, nature in colour and black and white, sometimes with long exposures.
I've got two options. Of course the total price differs. Which option would you prefer regarding my "style"?
Thank you very much for reading my mail! Have a very happy Easter, all of you.

a. Buy:
17-40 mm for long exposure
24-70 mm II for landscape, nature and stills
70-200 mm II with extenders
Swap the 50mm 1.8 for the 50mm 1.4
b. Buy:
17-40 mm for long exposure
21 Zeiss for landscape when sharpness is required
35 mm 1.2 L for landscape, nature and stills
85 mm 1.8 for the same purpose
70-200 mm II with extenders
Swap the 50mm 1.8 for the 50mm 1.4

  • Poll Poll
What's a better value? 135L for $635ish or 85L mkii for $1440

Value... lens...

  • 135L for $635ish

    Votes: 5 41.7%
  • 85L for $1440ish

    Votes: 7 58.3%

I had a completely different set of paragraphs... and I sounded like a prick... So let's not go down that path.

Let's go hypothetical... if you have the chance to buy either of the two lenses in used-like new condition, which would you choose. Your main focus is portraiture and you don't want to use that money to buy other things.

Discuss.

Petition to Canon regarding the EOS 5D Mark III

https://www.change.org/it/petizioni/canon-inc-mr-masaya-maeda-improvements-for-canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-spot-metering-to-af-point-multi-spot-metering-manual-exposure-compensation-with-auto-iso-other-features#

1 ) Spot meter linked to active af point for measure the subject's brightness;

2 ) Multi - Spot Metering in P/Tv/Av modes;

3 ) manual exposure compensation in manual mode with auto iso;

4 ) energy economy management of the flash. To be able to "auto-turn off" of the flash, when the subject is not illuminated;

5) Batch conversion on camera, for a massive workflow that change file format of many shots, for example from RAW to JPG S1, or from JPG L to S1. This could speed professional works because don't need a PC\MAC download and batch conversion.

Advise Please

I have been reading and searching for info for at least a year, first off I am considering purchasing the 70D for its FPS and weather sealing, I haven't had one in my hands yet, I will be shooting ranch type work, normally dusty conditions, most shots will be of working dogs moving at times very quickly, I read somewhere that a pro used both canon and nikon dslr's
but never left his nikon in full auto, but could leave his canon in auto, my thinking i will be wanting to use auto while learning
I know it will take some studying and some practice, but do not plan on using full auto any longer then is needed.
I also read, that Canon's might be more user friendly then the nikon, menu's easier to navigate, I know both are excellent
cameras, in fact most reviews say the nikon has better image quality then comparable canon, but I also have read enough, to know post processing can fix most problems, and I have seen some awesome pictures taken with canons. I also know its the person behind the camera, so i know I have a lot to learn, and I am looking forward to it.
Thanks for any advise you can give me.

New User looking for advice..

Hi lads & ladies,

Well I'm after a camera. This will be my first DSLR and I'm a longtime Ferrari fanatic. I collect Ferrari memorabilia and diecast models. I also attend Ferrari events and F1 when the finances allow. Budget? I didn't really want to go over $2000 (with lense/s), but if more is the better option overall than save more $ I will. Been trolling plenty of forums and websites for info and these are the few I've considered.

Canon 5D,6D,7D,70D

I would need to use macro lense (models) and video is an option but not entirely necessary. I may branch into my own website and sell Ferrari stuff so detail is a "thing" I guess.But currently I'm an enthusiast and its just a hobby.

Cheers

Brett

Ants nesting in my 5D!

For a while now I have had ants nesting inside my camera. Anybody else have this?

They seem to live in the space in front of the viewfinder - occasionally I'll see one crawl across my field of vision. They come and go via the little microphone slot above the "EOS 5D" label. I put a bait out, next to the camera, and most of them seem to have left but I still get the odd one. I'm not sure if there are still others inside or if something attracts them back to the camera. I can't imagine it is a good thing for the camera.

Any advice?

Canon IS Primes for landscapes?

My current gear is still doing fine, but the time has come to think about an upgrade. I’m planning to:

a) Move to Full Frame (ditching the “0” on my 60D and going for a 6D);
b) Switch to primes (which I tend to use as “2-way” prime anyway).

The choice for a 6D is mainly a financial one, but for most of my photography (mainly landscapes) it will do just as well as a 5DmkIII. A possible drawback of the 6D is the wildlife shots, but I think I would actually prefer a 70D (or maybe 7DmkII) over a 5DmkIII because of the higher fps and crop factor.

I’ll keep my L zooms (70-200 f/4 and 100-400) for now, but the EF-S lenses need to go. For my new prime lenses it’s hard not to get excited about the new Sigma ART lenses, but:

I’m shooting landscapes most of the time. As such, I tend to use apertures from f/4 and upward.
When comparing the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 ART to a more moderate priced Canon 35mm f/2 IS, the latter actually isn’t doing that bad:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=824&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=4&LensComp=829&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=5

There is no Sigma 24mm f/1.4 ART yet (thus an unfair comparison), but the Canon 24mm f/2.8 IS seems to be dropping the ball a bit:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=788&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=3&LensComp=829&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=5
The Sigma 24mm f/1.4 ART is rumored to be heavier and more expensive as the 35mm Art.

Although the mentioned Canon IS Prime lenses are not as good wide open, they have some clear advantages:
  • They are much smaller and lighter (the combined weight of the 24mm and 35mm Canons is actually less than a single Sigma 35mm ART, a big bonus when hiking);
  • They are (much) cheaper (the possible savings could bring a 5DmkIII in reach, but likely be spend on more glass);
  • They offer IS (which I don’t care about, but could be good for filming).

Am I missing something, or is this actually a viable option? Any good experiences using these Canon lenses for landscapes?

Canon 70D - an idea- digitally enhanced bokeh- Magic Lantern or Firmware?

Good morning- this is a thought I had this morning on the way in to work. With the 70D's dual pixel design, would it be possible to "digitally enhance" the bokeh of images? Could you load bokeh profiles since the camera knows what is in focus and what is not? Someone- Magic Lantern (when available), Canon, or even Adobe Lightroom could create bokeh profiles for the parts of the image that are not "in focus" based on what the sensor is reporting/sharpness.

Or does something like this already exist? This way, you could get F1.4 bokeh on almost any lens at any F stop.

Your thoughts?

It looks like it’ll be more than one lens, perhaps this is when Samyang will announce their first autofocus lenses? Or perhaps a zoom lens or two?
