Skybridge

I found this circular skybridge so interesting architecturally, and by no mean these shots are architecturely accurate. Basically, I was simply playing around with my Rokinon 14mm 2.8 on my 5D Mark III. For comparison purpose, one of these shots was taken with a Canon 24-70 2.8L II, which you should be able to figure it out pretty quickly.

By the way, this circular skybridge is in downtown Houston which connects Chevron Towers with a packing garage. This was formerly the headquarter of Enron. Comments/suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. And if you've shot something similar, please add them on. Thanks.

1Dx RAW photo issue

Hi Folks, during my last shoot I noticed 4 consecutive images were significantly overexposed and the metadata showed 0mm, 0 f-stop, and 0 shutter speed. I recently got the new firmware update and have not had this sort of thing crop up until just recently. Anyone have any ideas? I was shooting with the 14 mm lens. Any insight would be great.
Thanks
Chris

Advatages of a hybrid viewfinder?

The rumored hybrid viewfinder Canon may be working on, what advantages will it bring? The reason I ask is because I was just reviewing the AF on my wife's nex-6 with face detection. Every time it nails focus on the eyes of the subject, something that is very difficult with my 550D. Can face detection be implemented with a hybrid VF? Are there other functions that will be available/possible with a hybrid VF? Focus peaking, live histogram?

Should I buy 6d or 5MkIII?

I am a real estate broker looking to upgrade from Nikon to Canon to take better pics of large homes and wide angle shots of interior rooms.

Will the 6D take as good pics using the same ultra wide angle lens as the 5Mk3 would?

I understand the 5Mk3 is a much better more sophisticated camera but if the results are the same for stills, I much prefer the smaller lighter body (and lower price!). The pics are used mostly online for virtual Tours and marketing.

Thanks for any advice

Lens Paint

Hi all, it's an old question I'm sure, but has anyone found any paint that matches the latest canon white? I scuffed my new 300 and was told by Canon they don't sell the white paint. I'm down to the store where they sell model trains and aircraft to see if there's anything similar. I had the older darker white from a supplier on ebay but the new ones a lighter shade. I'm sure it's a problem a lot of us have. I must learn to be more carefully with my big whites.

Thanks all for any help.

PMIdigital - worth it?

I've read the various threads about sticking with B&H, Adorama, etc., for large purchases and avoiding the risks on ebay. Usually, I do purchase from B&H and have been since the 90s. However, PMI digital is an authorized Cannon dealer/retailer and noticed a few things on their recent ads and would like your thoughts:

1. Some ebay ads say they are a Canon dealer, others ads say they are a Canon RESELLER. For warranty purposes, I would stick to ads that only say they are a Canon dealer.

2. The ads I would stick to also specifically include all that is supposed to come with the box and say that they include a "Canon 1 Year Parts and Labor USA Warranty."

3. They have a 30-day return policy and they have 100% buyer feedback.

So if I purchase from them in this way, what is my risk? As long as I can input the serial number online at CanonUSA, I should be ok, correct?

Thanks for your input.

12MP FF, 4k Video, What us video people have always wanted (it seems)

Sony A7s. Confirmed 12mp Full Frame sensor and 4k video means 1:1 pixel use (no artifact/binning issues, more accurate color, etc.). Low light should be damn impressive too. Full announcement coming this Sunday (4/6) at NAB.

And unlike the GH4, a metabones adapter already exists that allows aperture control and IS for EF glass on E mount bodies.

I hope Canon is paying attention, beyond discounting the 1D-C.

Canon PowerShot G17 Mentioned Again [CR1]

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/04/canon-powershot-g17-mentioned-again-cr1/"></g:plusone>

Below is an updated spec list we’ve received for the apparently upcoming PowerShot G17. By the looks of the spec list, this camera would come above the recently announced PowerShot G1 X II which seem highly unlikely, but here’s what we were sent anyway.

24-200mm f/1.4-2.0 Lens

DIGIC 6

New 3,0 LCD with 1,2 mpix with high contrast glass

1/8000 shutter speed

All magnesium body with comfortable grip

490 pictures on 1 battery charge

New large sensor

Over 80 Ultra Advanced Scene Modes with on-camera retouching

Wi-fi , GPS with uploaded google maps

HD movies , full hd 1920 * 1080 – 60 f/s

Take this one with a massive grain of salt as it could be an April 1 holdover. We were also sent pricing and it’s above the PowerShot G1 X II. Stranger things have happened and I’m sure the “Gxx” nameplate still has good marketing muscle behind it. However, we haven’t even seen the G1 X II on the market yet, I can’t imagine it being trumped in the compact camera segment.

If you have a noisy focus ring on your Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II, below is the reason why. The report is dated February 2014, so all lenses manufactured prior to August 2013 are are potentially affected. I’ve had first hand experience with this issue from our rental inventory. I have no idea if Canon will charge you for this repair if the lens is out of warranty. We haven’t bothered to fix our inventory, as a few lenses have exhibited the issue, but functionality doesn’t seem to be affected.

Repair Information

It has been confirmed at the factory that when turning the focus ring, in rare cases, an abnormal noise can be heard. If units are brought in due to complaints of this nature, please replace the part with the new part.

We Have More Internal Canon Service Information on Lenses & Cameras

Yesterday we posted an internal service advisory for the Canon EOS-1D X and EOS-1D C. These are advisories that are only known to a select few within Canon and not told to the consumers.

We have a lot of more of these documents that cover various Canon lenses and camera bodies, there’s even more on the EOS-1D X mirrorbox.

The person that sent them to us didn’t have an issue with Canon keeping this stuff internal. However, they were upset that a lot of the issues are known to Canon and they’re still charging customers for the repairs out of warranty. There are a couple of lenses with design flaws and Canon is charging $250-$450 for these repairs out of warranty and not fully disclosing the design flaw to the customer.

We’re not sure whether or not we’ll post the rest of the internal documents we have in our possession. If you think there’s value in us doing so, please sound off in our forum.

Dissuade me to get a Rolleiflex

Went to my usual shop today for some CF cards.

Since my last visit a Rolleiflex popped up in their Vintage section. 2.8F, visually and optically mint. Asking price of 2300 USD (in local currency). Can probably be bargained down quite a bit (around 10% would be a reasonnable aime just for principles).

Just one comment....now THAT is a viewfinder!!! Why the hell does no company keep making this kind of camera??? The form factor is truly excellent!

I was so troubled that I forgot to ask for the accessories accompanying it and got the wrong serial number (taking lens not camera). I was in a rush to get my bank card away.

Anyone to dissuade me? Or will there be some GAS propaganda?

New Curved Sensor Tech by Sony

Sonyalpharumors reports the following interesting info:
http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sony-leading-the-sensor-tech-presents-new-curved-sensor-tech-likely-for-the-rx2-with-35mm-f1-8-lens/

If you follow SAR closely you will remember I posted two great Sony patents: One about a Curved Sony sensor tech and one about a 35mm f/1.8 Full Frame lens designed for curved sensor. Now, usually it takes years before a patented idea will be materialized in a real product. But you know, Sony cannot afford to avoid to sit down and stay still. They have to make real inovative products in order to catch up with the big two Canon and Nikon.

And the good news is that this is no more a dream! Image sensor World reports a great news. Sony will officially present their curved sensor technology at the Technology Symposium! This is what Sony writes about the presentation they are going to make:

We realized an ultimately advanced imaging system that comprises a curved, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor (BIS) and integrated lens which doubles the sensitivity at the edge of the image circle and increases the sensitivity at the center of the image circle by a factor of 1.4 with one-fifth lower dark current than that of a planar BIS. Because the lens field curvature aberration was overcome in principle by the curved sensor itself, the curved BIS enables higher system sensitivity through design of a brighter lens with a smaller F number than is possible with a planar BIS. At the same time, we controlled the tensile stress of the BIS chip to produce a curved shape that widens the energy band-gap to obtain a lower dark current. The curved CIS can be applied to an ultimately advanced imaging system that is validated by the evolution of the animal eye in Nature.

Now combine that sensor tech with a small and fast 35mm f/1.8 lens and you will get a superb new RX2 camera! More compact, faster and of much higher image quality than the current RX1-RX1R. And we also can hope to see an interchangeable mount camera with such a sensor in near future too!

I cannot wait to get some rumors about the RX2. If it has that kind of curved sensor tech I am sure SAR readers will be exctided about this. Or not?

Not sure which Canon body to get

I have owned a Canon t3i with the 18-55 lens for almost 2 years now, but have never upgraded due to financial reasons, however I am looking to buy more lenses and a Camera body. Honestly, I don't really care about the 18-55 because I will be selling that with my T3i to one of my friends' who is wanting to get into SLR's. I am looking at either the 7D or the 6D. Granted, I know that 7D is an APS-C with higher fps, and the body is built better with aluminum. The 6D is a full frame with much better low light high ISO performance, but is also almost $900-$1000 more expensive considering that a used 7D is around $700-$800.

Also, if I go the 6D route, obviously I will buy 3-4 lenses that are used with the 6D or 3-4 lenses with the 7D.

Here is what I shoot: Landscape, wildlife, light trails, sunrises and sunsets (not directly but when the sun is rising/setting behind buildings, the city, et cetera). I definitely plan on getting into Macro photography this year, and would love to do some Star Trails also.

The Cameras I have taken a look at are:
7D

70D (However I do stills, and not video and the ISO is better than the 7D, but not as good as the 6D, but I am wondering if that would be another camera to consider)

5D Mark II (Granted the 6D is better/newer and can be found for around just a few hundred dollars more when there are specials on it)

6D.

I have also took a look at the 5D Mark III, but sadly the price is far out of my reach.

As a final note, I am not concerned with Wifi or GPS.

Let me know what you think about what camera body I should go with.

Thanks

Scott

CPS Packet - Signature Required

I received a e-mail about my renewal of my CPS membership with a tracking number. It went to trash, I get a renewal every year, no big deal.

Then, I got a automated call from FedEx saying that tracking # XXXXX was coming Friday and I had to sign for it.

I find it difficult to believe that the free membership is so valuable that it has to be sent by 2 day FedEX with signature required. :) No wonder cameras cost so much and profits are poor. It is one thing that could go by the slow boat UPS Mail Innovations. Maybe they think its a image thing and I'll be impressed by them burning money!

Apple patents the bayonet mount system for an iPhone

Apple got the patent, which will allow interchangeable lenses could be added to Apple devices. The mount would be built-in to the iPhone’s rear-facing camera bezel, which would protrude marginally above the case. Various lenses with bayonet-style connectors would then be attached and locked into place.

EOS-1D X & EOS-1D C Cold Weather Autofocus Issues

HTML:

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/04/eos-1d-x-eos-1d-c-cold-weather-autofocus-issues/"></g:plusone>

We have been notified about a known issue within Canon on the Canon EOS-1D X and Canon EOS-1D C camera bodies and sometimes not autofocusing in cold weather situations. I have read about the issues on our own forum as well as on others.

Below is an explanation of the issue we’ve received from an anonymous source, though no official service advisory has been issued by Canon.

Symptom:

Camera “does not autofocus”, “does not search in AF”, or “does not focus in AF search” depending on the reporter or the camera settings; specifically, the focus cannot be achieved in low temperatures (under 0 degree Celsius).

* Although there has been no reported occurrence on the EOS-1D C, the mechanical structure of the Mirror Box Ass’y is the same as the EOS-1DX, so the EOS-1D C is included in the affected product.

Cause:

This phenomenon is due to the Locking Claw of the Sub Mirror (mirror for AF) going over the Locking Pin. The Sub Mirror’s angle becomes deviated and the light rays for AF does not fall on the AF sensors, causing the “does not autofocus” phenomenon.

EOS-1D X Mirrorbox Phenomenon in Cold Weather | Pre January 2013

Service of Affected Product:

To control the torque, the process to check the Locking Claw’s going over torque of Locking Pin has been newly incorporated. (From production on January 24)

Repair Procedure:

Handling of units in question: If the user complains about this specific phenomenon (does not autofocus in low temperature), replace the Mirror Box Ass’y with the ones to be shipped in the future (CY3-1661-010 or CY3-1687-010).

Handling of general repairs: If the user does not mention this phenomenon, please handle as normal repair.

The line directly above is of great concern to me. If you bought one of the earlier EOS-1D X cameras and live in a warm climate, you may never know the issues existed until you went to shoot in a cold climate.

The notice is dated January 2013, so I assume all cameras manufactured after that date would be unaffected. There is no serial number range that I can see, nor do we know how widespread the issue is. However, if you have experienced this phenomenon, you now know what it is.
